Beautiful Leah is available for adoption. She is getting worried that she may never get out of the shelter. She is sweet and lovable, and is said to be good with cats. She seems to do well with the other dogs and loves people. She would love to have a nice yard to run and play in. Bring your resident dog to the shelter or make arrangements for a home visit. Leah is patiently waiting for her chance at a better life. Message the shelter on its Facebook page, Pawz 2 Adopt, or call 330-779-1862 if you can give a home to Leah.

New treasures found at Poland Junior Women’s Club sale By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland Junior Women’s Club hosted its annual Trash and Treasure sale on Sept. 10 at the Prince of Peace Church in Poland. PJWC is an offshoot of the Poland Women’s Club and was established in 1980 and coordinates several events to bring community members together. The Trash and Treasure is an annual fundraiser that has been occurring for at least 15 years. The goal is to raise around $1,000 that will create a $500 scholarship for two Poland Seminary High School seniors. All of the items for sale are donated by the members of the PJWC. The members of the PJWC also made different baked goods for the bake sale. Anyone is welcomed to attend the sale and help raise money for the scholarships and to help fund
other events put on by the PWJC throughout the year. “Nothing that we do costs money for people, it’s all free. Once in awhile we’ll have another fundraiser to try and raise more money, but typically this is the big one that we have,” said Laurie LaPlante, the PJWC President. The turnout for the Trash and Treasure sale is usually pretty high, dependant on the weather. The PJWC used to host the sale in the Spring, but with the weather and busy schedules, the club decided to move the sale to September. “It’s mainly a community betterment organization. We try and do things for the community,” said LaPlante. PJWC is always welcoming new members. Information about the group can be found Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci on its website, www.PJWC.org, and the Poland Junior Women’s Several books were donated by the members of the Poland Junion Women’s Club for the Trash and Treasure sale on Sept. 10. There was a lot of excitement at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on Aug. 26 as students worked together on a week long team building project based on their new way of learning at the school. Students in the “Machine Team” and the “Academy of the Arts” are part of new academies in the school. The concept of academies is to bring together different career tech programs centered around project based learning (PBL) as well as incorporate all academic classes in the project. The “Machine Team” is made up of the Engineering, Precision Machining, Auto Collision, Truck and Diesel and Welding programs. Their first project was centered around building a trebuchet to see how far they could launch a golf ball across a field. Each team was made up from students in each of the different machine team labs and given a packet of information with rules and certain materials and tools they could use. Trebuchets of all shapes and sizes were made. The winning team launched their golf ball 260 feet. The “Academy of the Arts” is made up of the Culinary, Cosmetolog y and Creative Arts and Design programs.

The senior students from each lab set up stations throughout the Joyce Brooks Center and the juniors had the opportunity to taste the food the Culinary seniors cooked, get pampered by the senior
Cosmetology students and get art-sy with the Creative arts seniors. The common goal of both academies was to bring students from each of the team labs together to get to know each other as well as get introduced to the new PBL concept of learning and both teams accomplished just that.

Holy Family Mission Trip 2016 is success Holy Family Youth Ministry has just returned from its third annual mission trip to Cumberland, Ky. The stay was during t he week of July 17-22. This year, the group consisted of youth from Holy Family, St. Luke, Christ the Good Shepherd and St. Charles. The group totaled 59, with 29 of the group representing Holy Family. A few of their tasks included siding a house, replacing a bathroom floor, replacing a bathroom tub/shower unit, bu i ld i ng a nd sea l i ng t wo decks, replacing a drop ceiling with dry wall, replacing old concrete outdoor steps with new ones, painting the nave of St. Stephen’s Church, weeding Pastor Mani George’s garden, picking up litter on the main street through town and helping with the monthly food giveaway at St. Stephen’s Church. The youth represented their parishes, their families and themselves in a most positive way. They worked hard, played hard and prayed hard. It was an inspirational experience for all. The church would like to thank all of the donors who made this trip possible and to the adult chaperones, Ross Fabrizi, Justin Burk and Lori Kurta.

Camp FRIEND creates summer fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children with autism had the opportunity to enjoy a week full of summer camp activities Aug. 22-26. Camp FRIEND - Finding Rewards in Every New Day, offers children with autism who are within the age of 3-17 the experience of a summer day-camp to help them with socialization skills and several other characteristics. This is the third year that the Mahoning Valley Board of Autism has offered the program to families with autistic children. Tracy Marciano, camp coordinator, planned several activities throughout the week with the help of camp director Rachael Dobson. Marciano is a member on the board of the Autism Society and Dobson is a behavior analyst at the Rich Center for Autism. “This is teaching them life skills to be able to go out into the community and really enjoy things,” said Marciano. The fee to register for the camp was $150, but with the help of several sponsors, children received scholarships for camp. The camp allows families to help their children stay in a schedule and keep a

routine while on break from school. This is the only camp like this in the area for children. Twenty children participated in the summer camp and 14 peers helped out. “Our peer role models are acting like models for what the children should be like,” said Dobson. The community has been helpful in helping out with the
camp. The New Middletown Police Department came to visit the children, an art instructor came in to teach an art class and several other community members came to teach the children and create a natural environment for them. “We’re hoping to expand it down the road if we can, maybe do it a couple times a year, but for sure it will continue to be a summer camp,” said Marciano.

Certainly everyone can find something to eat here,” said Kim Rydarowicz, the manager of the cafe. Check out the view from the wall of windows overlooking the lake and the park. It is one of the most picturesque settings in The Valley. The expansion is part of the Inspired Catering ser v ices started by Kravitz Delicatessen last year. According to Jack Kravitz, owner of Kravitz Delicatessen, “We are using our expertise in retail to expand our business into locations that have both a retail and a catering side. Inspired Catering has an awesome team featuring Chef Chris
Pinter and events coordinator Patty Rydarowicz. Without the team, Kravitz would never be able to take on these new endeavors. Combining retail and catering expertise is a winning combination and has allowed Kravitz to expand.” Most people don’t know that Kravitz does high end catering. “It’s the best kept secret in the Valley” explains Patty Rydarowicz. ”People think Kravitz and they think corned beef, and are surprised to see beautiful plates of tri-color shrimp cocktails, vegetarian phyllo pastries, chef carved prime rib, vegan entries and elegant mousse for dessert.” Inspired Catering means offering unique entrees and displaying them with a special flare. The Board of Directors of Millcreek MetroParks has named Kravitz Inspired Catering as the exclusive caterer for the DD Davis Center. “We are so excited,” said Kravitz. “A year ago when we launched Inspired Catering we never expected the growth. We are both humbled and elated by being named the sole caterer for the most beautiful venue in the Valley.” Kravitz Inspired Catering is the exclusive caterer for the DD Davis Center, Poland library, Canfield library and Temple El Emeth. Liberty is still the flagship venue for Kravitz. Besides being one of the busiest places on St Patrick’s Day, Kravitz will be hosting its fall event, Oktoberfest. This year marks the third annual authentic Oktoberfest featuring four German Bands, German food, games and - of course - German and Oktoberfest drinks. The event will take place on Oct. 7 with the Old Munich Fish Fry with live music by Eintract, Oct. 8 with an authentic German menu of bratwurst, potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage, pretzel bagels and German potato salad. Music will be by Polka Revolution and Phil Yan. Oct. 9 brings the Saxon Club Brass Band and the Bavarian Brunch.
