LUCKY
This timid little kitty is named Lestat. Lestat is a handsome gray/blue smoky guy. He is about 5-months-old. Lestat will definitely need someone to work with him to get over being scared. He should be the only cat in the household, at least for awhile, but he does get along with other cats at the shelter. He loves to play! Lestat’s ID number is A141087. Visit Angels For Animals to see Lestat soon!
Meet Lucky. She is a front paw declawed cat, about 6- or 7-years-old. She came in to Angels For Animals on Aug. 16. She doesn’t like other cats, so she would love to have a home of her own. The shelter has not tested her with dogs. She does love people and is good with children. Her ID number is A145914. She is a love bug who enjoys checking everything out and making sure it is up to her standards. Go to Angels for Animals to see Lucky soon!

CVMS students are in the presence of greatness By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Ca n f ield V i l lage M idd le School students were standing in the presence of greatness on Aug. 30. Speaker David Kohout visited the school to deliver that message to the seventh- and eighth-graders and then the fifth- and sixth-graders and challenged each student to be a difference maker. Kohout’s presentation, Talk is Cheap, focused on building character, establishing confidence and instilling hope in the lives of young people. Kohout discussed several topics, including responsibility, leadership, friendship and bullying, by stressing a ‘You fit in attitude.’ “Talk is cheap, but the message isn’t. Who will you be in the next 5, 10, 20 years? I challenge you to not quit. You can
be part of the problem or part of the solution. My job is to make you part of the solution,” Kohout said as he addressed the fifth- and sixth-graders. To further his message, Kohout called down two students from the audience and asked them to race to empty a tube of toothpaste into a bowl. When the students were finished emptying the tubes, he then asked them to put the toothpaste back in the tubes. “OK, now put the toothpaste back in the tubes. Oh wait, you can’t put the toothpaste back in. You can’t put back in what you already put out,” Kohout told the students. “If you put something out there, you need to know you can’t get it back. Chaos equals consequences. Every time.” For the remainder of his presentation, Kohout focused on the five elements of a relationship: love, trust, respect, under-
standing and forgiveness. “We are all ordinary people doing extraordinary things. You need to keep doing the right thing, even when everyone else isn’t,” Kohout said. Kohout focused on making sure the students understood that it is okay to be different and there’s nothing wrong with them. “You’re going to be you. There’s nothing wrong with you. You are not dumb just because you can’t do things other kids do. You just do them differently. You are here for a purpose, and so am I. Most of our battles are won and lost in our brains. Repeat after me, There is nothing, nothing wrong with me,” Kohout said. Kohout founded his company, Talk is Cheap, Inc., in 2006 and has spoken to more than 550,000 students in the United States, as well as internationally.
“I have learned, over all my years speaking to students, that nobody is different. We are all the same,” Kohout said. To close his presentation, Kohout challenged the students to make a difference. “What’s your excuse? What happened to you? Why are you so mad? No answer will do for me. Quit whining and get up and make a difference. You are a Cardinal. You fight as the Fighting Cardinals. You are on the team. You need to become the best you can be. You do fit in,” Kohout said. To further inspire the students, Kohout invited them to pick up a pebble on their way out of the gym to remind them they have a purpose. He also gave each student a rubber bracelet emblazoned with the word Greatness to remind them they are always standing in the presence of greatness.

MCCTC hosts “welcome back” week with team building project There was a lot of excitement at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on Aug. 26 as students worked together on a week long team building project based on their new way of learning at the school. Students in the “Machine Team” and the “Academy of the Arts” are part of new academies in the school. The concept of academies is to bring together different career tech programs centered around project based learning (PBL) as well as incorporate all academic classes in the project. T he “Mach i ne Tea m” is made up of the Engineering, Precision Machining, Auto Collision, Truck and Diesel and Welding programs. Their f irst project was centered around building a trebuchet to see how far they could launch a golf ball across a field. Each team was made up from students in each of the different machine team labs and given a packet of information with r u les a nd cer ta in mater ials and tools they could use. Trebuchets of all shapes and sizes were made. The winning team launched their golf ball 260 feet. The “Academy of the Arts” is made up of the Culinary, Cosmetolog y and Creative

Fellows Riverside Gardens welcomed artist Visiliki (Lilian) Filippou to meet with people and display her artwork at the Weller Gallery on Sept. 3. Filippou has been interested in art her entire life and started painting when she was 7-years-old. She was born and raised in Athens, Greece and studied several topics about art during her time at the Vakalo Institute of Applied Fine Arts. “I travel to many countries. I’ve done 95 exhibitions in the past year,” said Filippou.
The gardens of Greece and her home in Ohio have inspired Filippou to create the artwork she has on display at Fellows. Filippou fell in love with the gardens at Fellows and the many different types of flowers inspire her to create several pieces of art. Canada and New York are just a couple places that Filippou has enjoyed traveling to and looking and their art. She travels all over the world to look for inspiration and to show off her paintings. Filippou enjoys painting outdoor portraits the most. “I like working where they have art. The first thing I’m going to see is the art,” said Filippou.
Filippou worked for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games as part of the costume design team for the opening ceremony and helped in designing forms. She worked in advertising agencies and magazines as a graphic designer and art editor, worked as an illustrator for children’s books and painted ceramics. Filippou lives in Athens for six months and in Ohio for the other six months. She continues to travel to host exhibits and explore the art in other parts of the world. Filippou will be available to meet with again at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Oct. 23 and Nov. 4. Her work will continue to be on display through the end of November.

Canfield’s Michael Crawford (25) is pictured sprinting through the Struthers defense at the game on Sept. 21. Canfield claimed victory with a score of 34-20.
CVMS seventh-grade football is victorious over Struthers The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team defeated Struthers 34-20 on Sept. 21 in Canfield. Struthers struck quickly with a 65-yard touchdown run on the games first play for 6-0 lead. Canfield answered on their second possession when Oliver Kovass raced 47 yards on a jet sweep for the score. Quarterback Paolo Papalia hit Toby Smith for the 2 -point conversion to make it 8-6. Canfield regained possession at the visitors 28 when AJ Wise recovered a Struthers fumble. Michael Crawford made it 14-6 when he burst three yards over left tackle. Struthers answered on their next possession converting a fourth and 5 into a 35-yard touchdown to tie the score at 14. Canfield responded once again when Kovass darted 20 yards to paydirt for a 20-14 Canfield lead at the half.
Canfield took possession to open the second half and drove 65 yards in nine plays behind the hard running of Crawford and Smith. Crawford dashed 21 yards for a Cardinal touchdown to stretch the lead to 2614. Another Struthers miscue gave the Cardinals possession at midfield. Papalia scored on a quarterback sneak after Smith had rumbled 26 yards to the Wildcats 1. Papalia then found Kovass in the right flat for the conversion and a 34-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Struthers tacked on a late score for the final margin. Kovass led all rushers with 83 yards on six carries, while Crawford finished with 80 yards rushing as the Cardinals piled up more than 200 yards on the ground. Coach Donadee cited the stellar play of offensive lineman Jake Grdic, Andrew Seaman, Ryan Hively, Ryan Bennet, Wise and Chris DeDonato.
