CHS soccer goes all out for Pink Out By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Canfield High School seniors and varsity soccer players Sam Accordino and Macey Malinky continued the tradition of a Pink Out to raise breast cancer awareness during the boys junior varsity and varsity soccer games versus Lake Catholic and the girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games versus North Canton Hoover on Sept. 30. Accordino and Malinky organized the Pink Out as their National Honor Society service project. Through the Pink Out, Malinky, daughter of Shawn and Carie Malinky, and Accordino, son of Rob and Nikki Accordino, raised money for Yellow Brick Place, a cancer wellness center for the tri-county area, and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. Yellow Brick Place, co-founded by President Donna Detwiler and Vice President Anna Aey,

provides support to cancer survivors, families and caregivers. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center delivers accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care. Malinky and Accordino also sold Pink Out T-shirts during high school lunch periods leading up to the Pink Out. This year, the Pink Out was expanded to include the Canfield High School girls volleyball game versus Hubbard on Oct. 5 and the Canfield High School varsity football game versus Niles on Oct. 6. Students were encouraged to wear the Pink Out T-shirts at each sporting event. Students could also wear the Tshirts on Cards for a Cure Day during CHS Spirit Week the week of Oct. 23. Players on both the boys junior varsity and varsity and girls junior varsity and varsity soccer teams wore donated pink jerseys for their respective games.

The Canfield Soccer Boosters donated pink socks for all players to wear for the games. All junior varsity and varsity players were announced prior to their games and cancer dedications to loved ones were announced for all players. Accordino and Malinky both said they chose this project to keep the Pink Out tradition alive and to support a great cause. “We wanted to keep the Pink Out tradition alive and be able to continue to raise breast cancer awareness. We did not want to let down the organizations for which we raise money. It’s such a great cause and we really wanted to keep it going this year,” Malinky said. “Raising breast cancer awareness is such a good cause and we felt this was a very worthwhile and important event to continue. We wanted to keep the tradition going and to be able to donate to the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center and Yellow Brick Place. We want them to know they can count on

us,” Accordino said. Accordino and Malinky also had a table set up to sell breast cancer awareness items, such as pink bandanas, pink ribbons and pink water bottles. They also offered a variety of baked goods with a breast cancer awareness theme, many of which were baked by soccer parents, including cookies, pink chocolate covered pretzels, pink popcorn and pink rice krispie treats. “We have so many donations here today from our soccer families. It’s been great and we thank them all for their help and support,” Accordino said. Sponsors and donors included Advanced Dermatology, Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley, Titan LED Lighting Solutions, the Malinky family, the Jadallah family, the Carey family, the Remias family, the Petrallo family, the Accordino family, the Thomas family, The Needles’ Nest, Attorney Martin F. White, the DeAngelo family and the Duke family.

Second Harvest Food Bank honors volunteers By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley celebrated their volunteers by hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Day on Aug. 26 at their facility on Salt Spring Road in Youngstown. The food bank gave food and drinks to volunteers who have worked with the food bank. They offered the lunch in the break room of their facility. The Cockeye BBQ catered the event, and the Giant Eagle Community Center donated cupcakes for the event. Approximately 100 volunteers attended the event. The volunteers’ duties range from sorting and re-boxing food, answering phones and assisting with the food bank’s programs, such as the Mobile Pantry. “Our volunteers are our heroes,“ said Michael Iberis, executive director of the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. To honor this idea, the lunch took on a superhero theme, complete with Spiderman, Batman and Superman centerpieces on the tables. Some volunteers got into the spirit and dressed up as superheroes or wore superhero shirts. The Food Bank gets help from many different people and groups. The ages of volunteers are from high school students to retirees. The shifts for volunteers run every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. nings from 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon. Linda Dean, a volunteer for two years, describes the experience as positive. She first started volunteering at the food bank once she moved into the area. She said everyone who worked with the food bank and volunteered had been “very welcoming“ and helpful. These volunteers worked with the food bank for more than 14,000 hours in 2016. That same year, the food bank distributed 10.5 million pounds of food throughout Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. They fill nearly 15,000 food requests weekly for their 148 hunger-relief programs throughout the tri-county area. These programs, as listed on their website, include “church pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, shelters for bat-

tered women and after-school programs that serve families, children, and seniors at risk of hunger.” The next large event that the food bank will be hosting is the yearly event Taste of the Valley on Oct. 1. They have 22 restaurants that provide food and drinks at Stambaugh Auditorium for the event. Last year, Taste of the Valley brought out 500 supporters and raised more than $50,000, which equates to about 200,000 meals. CVMS seventh-grade football defeats Struthers The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team improved to 4-0 when they traveled to Struthers recently and came away with a 36-6 victory. Canfield took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards in eight plays to take a 8-0 lead. Quarterback Broc Lowry keyed the drive with a 34-yard run and Ryan Schneider plunged two yards for the touchdown. Lowry then added a conversion toss to Gavin Ramun. Lowry picked off a wayward

Wildcat aerial on the next possession and sprinted 60 yards to paydirt; he then tacked on the extra point to make it 16-0. Canfield’s Jack Fabry intercepted a Struthers pass at the Canfield 46 to end the next Wildcat drive. The Cards made it 24-0 when they drove 54 yards in nine plays with Lowry converting fourth down passes of 35 yards to Aiden Rogers and a 15 yard scoring strike to tight end AJ Havrilla. Lowry also tacked on his second

conversion run. Canfield’s defense struck again when Chris Lorelli stepped in front of a Wildcard toss at the Struthers 37. Evan Williams then sprinted eight yards to give the seventh graders a 30-0 halftime lead. Jeff Demarco took a toss and sprinted 22 yards for the Cardinal’s final touchdown. Struthers had a late score for the final margin. Cardinal defenders Rogers, Hunter Kanotz, Mateo Riccardi, Dom Marzano, Evan Parker and Caden Kohout were standouts.

Local Scouts to participate in Jamboree-on-the-Air Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is the largest Scouting event in the world. JOTA uses amateur radio to link Scouts and hams around the world, the nation and in your own community. This jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby amateur radio operator’s ham shack. This Oct. 20-22, Scouts from down the street, across the country and around the world will gather for the annual Jamboree-on-the-Air. Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers, including girls, their families and friends. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically involves talking on a microphone and

listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication may also be taking place, such as video communication, digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone but transmitted by radio) or communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater). The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age and hobbies. The stations you’ll be communicating with can be across town, across the country, or even around the world. The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2016 JOTA had nearly 1.3 million Scout participants from more than 30,000 lo-

cations, and reached 156 countries. The Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association will be at Camp Stambaugh’s Brown Pavilion on Oct. 21 and will have antennas in the air and radios working by 9 a.m. They will also have a special call sign for this event. Contacts may be made across the state, country or around the world with just the airwaves and a wire antenna. Scouts will be completing requirements for various awards in all of the programs of Scouting. The Great Trail Council’s Camp Stambaugh is located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield. For more information on this event, contact the Camp Ranger Nathan at 330-533-4538.

Mill Creek Park hosted an event to encourage those with mobility challenges to walk the East Golf Hike Bike Trail on Aug. 31. Dr. Nicole Mullins created the “Let’s Move! A Walk for Those w ith Mobilit y Challenges“ event for those who may have any troubles walking. Mullins, a doctor of exercise science at Youngstown State University, brought her students to help encourage people to walk the trail and live healthy lifestyles. “Even if it hurts, it’s better to move,“ she said. She brought papers to pass out with research information on it. She explained that walking and moving will help both physically and emotionally, as exercise positively affects moods. Mullins own bilateral hip dysplasia injury inspired her to make an event to help people with other movement challenges. She had trouble moving but needed to work to get herself back into walking shape. During this time, she could only walk a little and used walking poles to take pressure off her pain points. She also found another program called “Walk with a Doc,“ set up for those with movement challenges to walk and also have someone present to answer their questions. While not doctors, Mullins and her students have information on exercise and health to help oth-

Dr. Nicole Mullins lent out her walking poles to a walker who wanted to see if they helped her relieve some pain while walking during “Let’s Move! A Walk for Those with Mobility Challenges” at the East Golf Hike Bike Trail on Aug. 31.

ers. Carol Vigorito, the Recreation and Education Director of Mill Creek Metroparks, discussed how the program first got started. She said that Mullins had contacted Mill Creek through email asking to create the event. Vigorito said that the parks were happy to collaborate on this fantastic opportunity. Mullins does not expect everyone to go the same amount because everyone has different abilities and health. Instead, she asks that everyone puts forth effort and walks as much as they want. The walkers should create their own goals after seeing what their current abilities are.

The group welcomes anyone who wants to walk to join. She explained that a walker in the past had worried about feeling silly about getting out and walking, so Mullins puts forth effort to help alleviate that worry. Her students help anyone on a walk and placed encouraging messages along the trail. More information on the group and the event can be found at Mill Creek Park’s event page at www.millcreekmetroparks.org/events/. The group welcomes anyone no matter the mobility need, stating that walkers may use canes, walking poles or other equipment.
