YSU President Jim Tressel met with Union Elementary Principal Michael Masucci in the school’s library on Sept. 26 while he visited the school for the Big Dog-Little Dog program, which he called “inspiring.”
Poland leadership program connects high school and K-2 by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Poland Schools hosted their weekly Big Dogs-Little Dogs program on Sept. 26 at Poland Union Elementary School. The program brings high school students to the elementary school to help with schoolwork. This week, Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel visited the school to see the program in action. Tressel called Big Dogs-Little
Dogs “inspiring,“ and said he enjoyed the way it connected the students to mentors. “In education, if we can get help from all sides... we can accomplish spectacular things,“ he said. He continued to say that education can solve most problems, such as the opioid crisis and crime. Poland Union Principal Michael Masucci, Tressel and Poland Superintendent David Janofa visited classrooms to see
the students participating in the program. Tressel talked to the students and teachers about education, the class and the schoolwork. Masucci said Big Dogs-Little Dogs began in order to “capitalize on the terrific kids at the high school“ and give the high school students a chance to give back to the community. The Big Dogs spend part of the Tuesday morning helping the teachers with whatever they need. In Kirsten Jacobs’
kindergarten class, the Poland Seminary High School students helped with making shapes and reading. In physical education, the Big Dogs demonstrated how to run a course created by teacher Mark Wesolowsky. Then, the students assisted the Little Dogs through the course. Big Dog Marlie McConnell, an eleventh-grade student, spoke highly of the program. “I love working with kids,“ she See BIG DOG, Page 4

Two Poland Union Elementary students enjoyed their first day in Nick Blanche’s technology class on Aug. 28.
Union Elementary celebrates first day By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Students and staff of Poland Union Elementary experienced the first day of the 2017-2018 school year on Aug. 28. For some students, this was their first day back to the school, but for the kindergartners, it was their first day at the school. Principal Michael Masucci said that they had “few tears“ during the school day, and none came from any fears or anxiety of school, but instead from uncertainty with schedules, although he noted the students were usually correct and needed reassured. He complimented the families of the children for getting the students ready for school mentally, resulting in a day with very few problems.
The first day set out to create a routine for the children. The classes go right into instruction and learning. The staff expects the students to be ready and have materials for class. For example, today started the first day of physical education and students needed to bring their gym clothes. Masucci explained that the classes that day would build the foundation that the students will use throughout the rest of their schooling. The students began the routine of going to class and lunch, a routine that they will use from now until high school. While not on the first day, the school did have a fire drill, to instill the rules of the drill and information on fire safety into the students.
The children also met with important figures in their school careers. They gathered in the gym and met with their principal Masucci to start the day. Student Resource Officer Steve Kent walked through the classrooms and introduced himself. Officer Kent moves between the Poland schools throughout the day and gets to know the children from their first day to their graduation day. Superintendent David Janofa also visited the school today. Poland Union Elementary School houses students from kindergarten to second grade. They have about 385 children in the school. Masucci and the staff planned out these first few weeks thoroughly during the summer and hope to have a great school year.

Mill Creek designed the tour as a way for members of the park to notice the changes in season near the end of summer. The tour started at the garden, headed to Lake Cohasset, in front of the Wall Garden, into the Lily Pond area, by the Birch Hill Cabin, around Pioneer Pa-
vilion’s lot, over the suspension bridge, near Lanterman’s Mill, past Cascade Falls and entered the drive way leading to Judge Morley Pavilion’s parking lot before looping back around. Zocolo opened the trolley ride with some trivia about the general history of the park. Her first couple of questions revolved around Fellows Riverside Garden since the tour began there. For example, Elizabeth Fellows donated the land to Mill Creek park in 1958 to create a community garden. Then, her trivia dealt with Volney Rogers, the park’s founder. The trivia became about each area the trolley passed rather than the general history of the park. For instance, while at the Lily Pond, Zocolo explained where the Lily Pond’s nickname,
“The Goldfish Pond,“ originated. According to the story, a police officer donated five goldfish to Volney Rogers for the newly opened pond. The trolley ride provided beautiful sights for the riders. Zocolo showed the tour group notable nature points in the park, but occasionally, the trolley stopped for unplanned sights, such as a couple deer running through the woods and to look at the oldest continually lived in house in Youngstown, which resides next to the park. The group saw other wildlife on the tour as well, including squirrels and a heron. Other information and history about Mill Creek can be found on their website, millcreekmetroparks.org, or on Zocolo’s other tours. She plans to host tours more often in 2018.
