TONY

At Angels For Animals in Canfield, there is a beautiful young lady cat named Ella! Ella is a very dignified Tortie who was born on March 10, 2013. She came in to the shelter on Nov. 4, 2015 so she is more than overdue at finding her Furrever Home! She was returned to Angels when a landlord changed hands and said “no cats allowed.” That was a sad day for Ella. Her ID # is A088312. If you would like to meet Ella, stop by and see her. She is very loving and gets along with the other cats in their room.

Tony is waiting at Angels For Animals until she finds just the right person to take her home. She is a beautiful orange and white Tabby cat that is declawed. When she came in on July 27, she was timid but is doing very well now. Unfortunately she was brought in due to a death in the family. Tony’s birthday is Jan. 6, 2013, so she is going on 4-years young! Her ID number is A144801. Call 330-549-1111 or come in to Angels and let them know you are interested in meeting Tony. She is a wonderful feline!

Students walked the halls of Robinwood Lane Elementary on Sept. 16 to try and find hidden Pokemon throughout the bulding using directions their classmates made.

Students learn directions using Pokemon Go By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Jeanette Tamulonis, a fourthgrade teacher at Robinwood Lane Elementary, created a lesson using the popular Pokemon Go game for the fourth-grade students. The activity helped the students differentiate the difference between using absolute and relative locations. They had to create their own directions using relative location to lead students to find Pokemon that were hidden around the school. “The idea is you want three different characters photographed in the iPad by the time we are done searching,” said Tamulonis. Boardman Park hosts day of outdoor fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Boardman Park hosted its fifth annual Outdoor Family Day on Sept. 17. The parked was filled with several outdoor activities, as well as some inside the Lariccia Family Community Center. Families could choose from different outdoor activities like a geology dig, archery, climbing a rock wall and fishing. One of the stations set up had live snakes which caught the attention of several children. Inside contained a live Grass Roots band, face painting, taxidermy animals and a deer blind hunting

game. “We’ve had a nice steady pace of people throughout the whole day. We gave out over 250 kiddie bags, it’s been a very nice turnout,” said Karen McCallum, the Recreation Director and Education Specialist. Everything was free at the Outdoor Family Day, all that was asked was a donation for the Second Harvest Food Bank. The main sponsors were Subaru and Armstrong, as well as the Step Outside Grant from the Division of Wildlife. There were many families who attended the event and made sure to stop at each station. There was a DJ outside

providing music and entertainment, as well as a wheel the guests could spin to win a prize. The weather allowed the families to spend time outside with each other and experience things they might not have had the chance to outside of the park. “It’s a great opportunity for families to have a lot of outdoor fun,” said McCallum. The event ran from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and families who were interested had the opportunity to stay and have a camp out with the Boy Scouts. There would be a bonfire to roast marshmallows and the chance to participate in a nature hunt.

The top seven runners for the girls team were Alayna Cuevas (1st), Julia Gorby (2nd), Bailey Moore (5th), Isabelle Dwyer (18th), Allyson Schwendeman (19th), Shayne

Harris (22nd) and Aubriellen Wheatley (23rd). The top runners seven runners for the boys were Justin Maloney (4th), Anthony Marshall (10th), Jason Lagese (11th), Caleb Zubanek (13th), Cayden Newberry (14th), Patrick Hubert (15th) and Ben Alvarico.

Cross country Mahoning County Championships The Boardman Glenwood junior high school girls cross country team took third place and the boys team took fourth place in the Mahoning County Championships at Austintown Park. The top seven runners for the girls team were Alayna Cuevas (2nd), Julia Gorby (4th), Bailey Moore (11th), Allyson Schwendeman (26th), Isabelle Dwyer (35th), Shayne Harris (43rd) and Aubriellen Wheatley (49th). The top runners seven runners for the boys were Justin Maloney (10th), Jake Hughes (17th), Anthony Marshall (18th), Caleb Zubanek (20th), Patrick Hubert (22nd), Frank Bero (26th) and Siman Mascola (28th).

Valley Forge Patriot Invitational Boardman’s Chris Butler raced to a first place finish, outpacing 177 competitors, to lead Boardman High School to a first place finish at the 29th annual Valley Forge Patriot Invitational on Sept. 24 on the campus of Cuyahoga Community College West in Parma. The Spartans placed five runners in the top 10, with Butler’s time of 16:22, senior Nick Digiacomo placing second in 16:48, junior Mark Moradian sixth in 17:32, freshman Mitchell Dunham seventh at 17:33 and senior Nathaniel Ams capturing eighth in 17:48.

“This was our first time running at this invitational and we really did not know what to expect,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “After a tough week last week at Spartan and the Suburban League, and with county and AAC coming up, it was great to have a great team win today.” Setting new personal bests on Saturday were juniors Tony Saab at 20:13 and Jason Fabian at 19:11, as well as freshmen Dunham at 17:33 and Steven Moradian at 21:50. Moradian earned this week’s BW-3 ‘Runner of the Week.’

Boys cross country competes The Boardman boys cross country team improved its 2016 record to 90-19 following a third place finish at the Suburban League Championship on Aug. 31 at The Canfield Fairgrounds. The Spartans placed fourth of the top 20 runners in the 359 runner field. Senior Chris Butler took first overall at a time of 16:12, while senior Nick Digiacomo was fourth with a time of 16:41. Junior Mark Moradian and freshman Mitchell Dunham were the other Spartans represented in the top twenty with times of 17:32 and 17:34, which were good enough for 17th and 18th place.

“This was not easy,” said Spartan head coach John Phillips. “After running in the Spartan Invitational on Saturday to bounce back and run in a large meet again on Tuesday is very challenging for any runner.” Rounding out the top finishers for Boardman was senior Nathaniel Ams in 29th place at 18:09, senior Dominic Eorio in 52nd at 18:46 and junior Matt Moradian in 62nd place with a 18:58 finish. Setting a new personal best at Canfield were junior Jason Fabian at 19:27, junior Tony Saab at 20:13 and senior Jacob Kohuth at 23:23.
