TONY
At Angels For Animals in Canfield, there is a beautiful young lady cat named Ella! Ella is a very dignified Tortie who was born on March 10, 2013. She came in to the shelter on Nov. 4, 2015 so she is more than overdue at finding her Furrever Home! She was returned to Angels when a landlord changed hands and said “no cats allowed.” That was a sad day for Ella. Her ID # is A088312. If you would like to meet Ella, stop by and see her. She is very loving and gets along with the other cats in their room.
Tony is waiting at Angels For Animals until she finds just the right person to take her home. She is a beautiful orange and white Tabby cat that is declawed. When she came in on July 27, she was timid but is doing very well now. Unfortunately she was brought in due to a death in the family. Tony’s birthday is Jan. 6, 2013, so she is going on 4-years young! Her ID number is A144801. Call 330-549-1111 or come in to Angels and let them know you are interested in meeting Tony. She is a wonderful feline!

The Canfield High School Art Department and art students have partnered with the Canfield library to host an art show in September for the students. The show opened on Sept. 22, with a reception at the library. The artwork was on display during library hours from Sept. 22-25. The approximately 100 pieces of art on display were pulled from several students who showed their work at the Canfield High School Art Show in the spring. The show was organized by Kate Antal and Kevin Hoopes, CHS art teachers, in conjunction with Linda Kucalaba, Canfield library supervisor. All involved were very excited about the partnership and the show. “We are very excited to partner with the Canfield library. The idea behind this show is to highlight the Canfield High School art students’ work for the community. We wanted the community to be able to see their work, and what better place to hold the show than the library, as it is the center of the community. This partnership is good for both the school and the library and the community gets to see how amazing the Canfield High School Art Department is and how amazing these young artists are,” Antal said. Kuca laba echoed A nta l’s sentiments.

“We are thrilled to have this art show here at the library and to be able to display these young artists’ talents. We are so pleased to be able to bring their art work to the library. It’s a perfect partnership. To be able to bring the school and the library together is wonderful,” Kucalaba said. According to Antal, a second art show is scheduled for Feb. 16-19, and it will include middle school and elementary art students. “We have scheduled another art show in February and it will also include Canfield Village Middle School and Hilltop Elementary and C.H Campbell Elementary art students from the current school year,” Antal said. Kucalaba and the Canfield library are delighted to continue hosting the art shows. “This is our first Canfield High School art show and we plan to host two a year and include middle school and elementary art students. It is just going to grow with the inclusion of their art and it is another opportunity to share these young artists’ talents with the community,” Kucalaba said. Antal said the partnership and the shows are all for the art students. “We want the students to be proud of what they do and we want the give the community an opportunity to be proud of these young artists, too,” Antal said.

Canfield Boy Scouts celebrate 90 years The 90th summer for Canfield Troop 25 encapsulated what it means to be a Boy Scout. Starting off in May, the boys endured snow and rain as they camped caveman-style with only rocks and sticks to prepare their meals that they each planned. June offered the experiences of the Civil War on a trip to Gettysburg, where they hiked through the battlefields, explored the ruins and appreciated the freedoms we have in our country. On the way home they visited the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa. Summer camp in July at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation in Kensington allowed them to complete merit badges in lifesaving skills, plant identification, riflery, archery and many other activities. While some
boys completed a mile long swim and lessons in Lake Don Brown at the camp. Camping in August was on the shores of Lake Erie by participating in the Conneaut D-Day reenactment. Serving to guide veterans to their special viewing area, the boys once again learned about the war-time sacrifices. This year they also assisted four of their troop members to become an Eagle Scout, including Luke Bowser, Pat Byrne, Hunter Hykes and Matt Mosier, by helping them with their Eagle Scout projects such as building park benches and Wood Duck boxes. They then participated in each Court of Honor as their fellow Scouts were recognized to the highest honor in Scouting. They will see six boys in-
ducted into the Order of the Arrow, Scouting National Honor Society, at Summer and Fall Ordeals and one Scout attending the National Youth Leadership Training. Weekly meetings continued throughout the summer and included service projects, such as repairing the bocce court at Canfield Swim Club with the help of Altiere’s Lawn and Garden supplying the slag. They also assisted with Canfield’s Memorial Day parade, Fourth of July parade and concessions, Canfield Rotary’s f lag project and Second Harvest Food Bank. There was plenty of fun too, shooting trap at Eastern Ohio Conservation Club, skeet at Upland Valley and swimming during August.
On Oct. 8 from 4-7 p.m., Cardinal Mooney High School’s Alumni Relations Committee will host its annual Pigskin Party at Cassese’s MVR, located at 410 N. Walnut St. in Youngstown. To take place directly after the school’s Inaugural Alumni Appreciation Football Game (CMHS versus Buffalo Canisius at Stambaugh Stadium at 1 p.m.), the event will serve to foster personal and professional connections between alumni from the school’s 60 years. A special game day buffet will be made available by the MVR along with a signature Mooney cocktail. A portion of each cocktail sold will benefit the Car-
mine L. Cassese Memorial Scholarship. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and entertainment. Alumni Relations Committee representatives will be on hand to collect information from interested participants for inclusion in a Mooney Alumni Business Directory. Canfield Village Middle School parents had a unique opportunity to be part of the band. As the school year started, the Class of 2024, 81 member fifthgrade band experienced “Jump Start” lessons. This is a week of intensive instruction for each instrument. With the help of retired music educators and local music instructors, the students learned how to open a case without damaging the instrument, how to form the correct embouchure (mouth formation) for each instrument as well as how to make a tone on the mouthpiece. At the end of the week, fifth-grade band parents were invited to “sit in” with their child and become part of the band. The first band concert is on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Canfield High School auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. Pictured is Al Colella, retired band director from Poland, teaching clarinet to students.
