Costume contests, prizes, and refreshments will be available in the pavilion following the hike. MetroMutts members receive a free pumpkin and photo with their dog. The annual St. Michael’s Garden Guild of Canfield had its 51st annual Flower Show “Autumn Magic” on Sept 23. Garden Guild members created floral arrangements using only locally grown fresh foliage and produce. Categories ranged from woodland fantasy, bonfire, autumn bounty and table arrangements. Every member was allowed only one entry per class. Beverly Patrick, an accredited national flower judge, was asked to officiated the show. A total of 17 blue ribbons were awarded. The Blue Ribbon winners were Janet Murray, Cookie Beeman, Jerry Bertison, Carol Cartwright, Pat Hoyle, Mary Ann Silvestri, Kaaren Cabraja, Kaye Smith and Mag Mitchell.

Colors and reflections Join Mill Creek MetroParks to circle Lake Glacier at the Ford Nature Center on Oct. 11 from 2-4:30 p.m. Because of its variety of tree species and their watery reflections, it’s usually Mill Creek Park’s best place for autumn color. The hike is of moderate difficulty and is four miles long.

Pumpkin walk before twilight Join Mill Creek MetroParks in the Calvary Ryn parking area near the Glacier Boathouse for this moderate to difficult onemile hike on Oct. 18 from 2-3:30 p.m. Before the tremendous crows arrives, stroll through the magnificent display of jack o’lanterns at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Where are witches? Halloween is near! While it’s not likely you’ll find ghosts or goblins, Mill Creek MetroParks hopes to find witches in the Scholl Recreation Area on a moderate, one-and-a-half mile hike. The hike is on Oct. 25 from 2-3:30 p.m.

Birding the sanctuary Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead this walk at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary on Oct. 24 from 8-9:30 a.m. Boots are required. Please register for this walk at FNC by Oct. 23.

MetroMutts hosted Yappy Hour — Puptoberfest at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on Sept. 10. Dogs and their owners were welcomed to the farm for fall festivities for both humans and canines. There were various activities available for those in attendance, including a corn maze, a bonfire and wagon rides. Guests were also given tokens for two craft beers. Julie Bartolone planned the event and said she wanted to make this year’s Puptoberfest extra special. She said that she appreciate the cooperating weather. MetroMutts has hosted events similar since it’s start in 2011, often having two of them a year. Bartolone decided to have one, going all out for the celebration. Bartolone made homemade dog treats and smoothies made of bananas, other fruits and yogurt for the canines to enjoy. See METROMUTTS, Page 4

Family Fun Friday at Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a special season-themed day surrounding apples. Lynn Zocolo led the activities with various volunteers of Mill Creek MetroParks. Children had the opportunity to taste test different kinds of apples, identify and learn the parts of an apple, participate in a scavenger hunt around the garden, plant begonias and dig for treasures. Zocolo said she enjoyed seeing the children dig in the gardens most of all. “It’s fun for them to actually get their hands dirty while they’re here,” Zocolo said. Volunteer Mary Kay Wrenn said she had a few students who brought their plants home from Family Fun Fridays made them into gardens. “It’s so nice to hear that they are planting these plants at home,” Zocolo said. Wrenn said she appreciated the practice the students take home and come back with those skills, ready to further their gardening skills. “It’s amazing how many come back and actually know how to plant,” Wrenn said. Family Fun Fridays are continuing through Oct. 16 on Fridays from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens in the Family Garden.

POLICE REPORTS Oct. 1 Arrest: Shaun M. Lebbano, 46, of Carrollton surrendered on a charge of violating restrictions on depositing litter, a thirddegree misdemeanor, after a Shields Road man reported having seen someone illegally dump construction materials Aug. 24 in a nearby backyard. Theft: A man reportedly stole two toolkits valued at $658 from Lowe’s, 1100 Doral Drive. Criminal damaging: A Sabrina Drive man told police someone in a vehicle twice ran over his mailbox. Theft: A Melrose Avenue man reported a $400 plastic door was removed from his driveway. Menacing: An Indianola Road woman said she received a voicemail message containing an implied threat regarding the return of money. Vandalism: Someone tossed eggs at a car near Oakridge and Forestridge drives. Misuse of a credit card: A township man found out his stolen debit card had been used to make two fraudulent charges totaling roughly $32. Identity fraud: A Shorehaven Drive man discovered that while balancing his checkbook, a $503 unauthorized cash withdrawal had been made to an account he and his wife share. Vandalism: Two wooden doors, two walls and a light switch sustained damage at an apartment complex in the 7400 block of West Boulevard. Child endangerment: Police received information about a child walking alone on South Avenue before charging Patricia L. Brock, 42, of South Avenue, Boardman, with one misdemeanor count of child endangering. Authorities learned that the fearful 10-year-old boy had been left by himself at the residence while Brock and two other people walked to two nearby businesses, a report stated. Robbery: Authorities at the Mahoning County jail phone booked 29-year-old Marc S. Schadel of Wyndclift Circle, Youngstown, on a robbery charge after someone had passed a note Sept. 29 at Circle K, 7103 Lockwood Blvd., to demand money. The employee refused, however, and the robber fled with an energy drink, a report showed. Theft: Officers took custody of Vincent J. Digiacomo of Clarencedale Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a felony-theft charge. The 52-year-old Digiacomo was accused of renting three TVs and a computer from Eagle Rental Purchase, 6132 Market St., and failing to make the monthly payments. Theft by deception: A worker for Ankle & Foot Care Center, 8175 Market St., reported someone, in an effort to steal $30,000 from the business, sent an email instructing her to set up a wire transfer of the funds before a doctor with the center stated he had never authorized the withdrawal. Theft: Police charged 32-year-old Adam C. Strapazzon and 34-year-old James J. Dillon with one count of theft. The two New Cumberland, W.Va., men were accused of stealing 10 items, including cookware, from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive. Drugs: Police took a 911 call from a woman who said someone had tried to run over her with a car, then charged 31-year-old Amber P. Rothwell of Thalia Avenue, Boardman, with cocaine possession and disorderly conduct. A white powder thought to be cocaine was found in a gum wrapper, and Rothwell continually yelled and swore at officers while refusing to desist, they said. Oct. 2 Arrest: Officers answered a suspicious-person call on Palo Verde Drive, where they arrested 40-year-old Nigel R. Brown of Detroit on a Delaware County, Ohio, warrant charging failure to appear in court. Identity theft: An employee with a Boardman-Poland Road business discovered someone had used a counterfeit driver’s license to obtain cellphones.

Boardman Center Middle School cross country runner Mitchel Dunham, pictured wearing his suburban league and county championship medals, has won the last three middle school boys cross country championship meets. Dunham was the champion of the Division I middle school boys race at the Sparan Invitational, where he defeated 342 other runners. Dunham was the winner of the Suburban league Championships, defeating 293 runners from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Dunham also won the Mahoning County Championships, defeating 113 other runners. In total, Dunham has defeated 749 runners in three meets.

Boys cross country places sixth at Malone Invitational The Boardman boys cross country team placed sixth overall at The Malone University Invitational in Canton on Sept. 26 and improved their season record to 38-40. The Spartans were led by senior Ethan Schwendeman, who took 11th overall out of 302 varsity and junior varsity runners in a new personal best time of 16:49. Junior Chris Butler earned 24th place overall with an effort of 17:17. He was followed by junior Nick Digiacomo in 39th place in a time of 17:44. Next up for Boardman was junior Nathaniel Ams whose time of 17:50 was 44th overall. He was followed by sophomore Mark Moradian in 85th place in a time of 18:47. Following was senior Adam Deeley in 103rd overall in a time of 18:59. “This was a nice bounce back from a very tough home meet last week,” said Spartan head coach John Phillips. “We are still hampered by injuries, but

other guys are stepping up and the leadership that Ethan Schwendeman provides has been huge,” Phillips added. Also highlighting the Boardman effort was the number of personal bests at Malone. Setting new marks were Schwendeman, senior Brett Brunko at 19:44 and junior Dan Raver at 20:38 and junior Jonathan Tran at 20:39. Also achieving a new personal best and earning this weeks BW3 ‘Runner of the Week’ award was junior Matt Maroni, who set a new career best in a time of 18:40. “Matt had a tremendous race and appears to have taken a huge step forward as a runner,” Phillips said. “With the uncertainty we have with some of our varsity runners health, having Matt and others ready to go will be a key for us the next few weeks.” The Spartans have won 13 of the past 14 county titles.

A cathedral-length veil incorporated lace from her mother’s wedding gown. Jaclyn Madden, sister of the bride, and Paige Rassega, sister of the groom, served as honor attendants. Bridesmaids were Christie Madden and Candace Madden, sisters of the bride, and Nicole Stepsky. Karly Kelly, a cousin of the groom, participated as the flower girl. Attendants wore mocha-colored dresses. The groom’s brother, Pierce Rassega, served as his best man, and groomsmen were Frank Hayes, a cousin of the groom; Jonathan Terleski, brother-inlaw of the bride; Jason Ferguson; and David Avery.

Serving as the ring bearer was Nathan Adams, a cousin of the groom. Ushers were the groom’s brothers Mason Rassega and Max Rassega. The bride received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in education from Youngstown State University. She is employed as an enrollment services specialist for Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown. The groom received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from YSU. He is employed as a customer service manager for J & M Technologies in Canfield.
