planned, wrote and choreographed the performance. The Spartans swayed and marched at times during their performance. They used marimbas during their performance, which few other bands had done. Several band members switched instruments in the middle of the performance. Austintown Fitch’s band director, Wes O’Connor, also did not coordinate his drumline’s performance at the event. He gave all credit to drumline captains Zach Potkanowicz and Seth Welch. He said he and percussion instructor Bill Gonda only spectate the event. “As far as preparation for the Boardman Drum Night, our drumline captains decide what to play and the logistics of the performance,” O’Connor stated. Before the event began, Austintown Fitch’s drumline practiced by beating rhythms on the tables and their legs. They danced while performing with some drummers jumping while playing. Their tenor drum player had solo during their presentation. After each band performed individually, all the drummers strapped their drums back on and played together. Boardman instructed that they would start by playing a common drumline cadence, then each band would play their own variation on that cadence. Once each band had a chance to play the cadence, all they bands performed it together.

Western Reserve’s drumline kicked off Boardman Drum Night on Oct. 2. The high schools of McDonald, Liberty, Champion, Austintown, Howland and Boardman also performed, as did Youngstown State University’s drumline.

The drumlines all played a final performance together after each school had played individually. Pictured, from left, (front) are Western Reserve, Liberty, Austintown, Boardman, Champion; (back) Howland, Youngstown State University and McDonald. They all played a commonly used drumline cadence.

Some bands packed up or went to their band buses after the final performance, but others stayed and created a drum circle where the schools jammed together. The drumlines circled around a few players who would play a rhythm and the drum circle

would repeat it. Admission to the Drum Night was $2 dollars. The Boardman band sold cookies, food and refreshments, and they had a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds from the money raised went back to the band.

Boardman library treats children with three different Puppet Tales By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Boardman library gave children a treat with three different tales told through a puppet show. Librarians John Yingling and Amy Burkard stepped behind a cardboard stage made to look like a castle. They put the puppets on their hands and delivered stories for the group of children sitting on the floor in front of the cardboard castle. They also had a music player set up behind the stage for their last story. Yingling and Burkard’s performances through all three tales made the children laugh because of their exaggerated gestures and timing. They first acted out the tale “That’s good! That’s bad!“ The performance told of a boy who gets lost from his parents and goes into the wild and meets a number of different animals. The boy does things like riding down an elephant’s trunk and getting carried away by a bird. These occurrences lead him to finding his parents at the end of the story. Then, they performed a story called “Waking Beauty,“ a play on the classic Sleeping Beauty tale. This version of the story does not have an evil witch or poison apple, but instead opens with the prince, the beauty and three fairies. The fairies try to convince the prince to kiss the girl, but the prince does not quickly realize what they are telling him. For example, one fairy’s rhyme ends in, “give her some lip,“ so then the prince yells at her and tells her to wake up. The final story was another revision on a classic tale. In “Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears,“ Goldi breaks into the three bears’ recording studio. The story replaces porridge and beds with headphones and musical instruments. Goldi lets out a loud scream once awakened by the bears, leading them to ask her to join their band. Burkard walked out from behind the stage to lead dances in between each tale. The group first danced to “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.“ Burkard

sang the song faster each time they finished it. The children laughed as they tried to keep up with the tempo on the fifth time through. They did the “Hokie

Pokie“ between the second and third tales. At the end of the show, the children played with the puppets and went behind the stage.

Boardman library does not hold puppet shows often, usually only twice a year. Each of the tales performed are available to check out at the library.

Lions Club provides coats for kids

Holiday Shopping & Tourist Site Neighbors | Submitted

The Boardman Lions Club had its ninth annual New Coats for Kids Program at Target in Boardman on Oct. 3. There were 53 Boardman families who were experiencing financial difficulties and qualified to select their new coats. One hundred and twelve children shopped for new coats and a snack was provided by Target. Applications went home with all Boardman elementary students and were then evaluated by a committee. Selection was based on the information provided. Coats were purchased for those families in greatest need first. The Lions then work through the list until the group’s budget is spent. Qualified applicants were notified by mail and invited to a night at Target to select their coats. Lions members Joni Blase, Jana Coffin and Kathy Collins served as personal shoppers. The Boardman Lions are almost self-supporting from donations. This year, the group spent $5,161 on 112 coats. The club has already started fund raising for next year. Anyone who would like to donate to the program can visit the Boardman Lion’s website, www.boardmanlions.com. BHS jazz band jams in the rain By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Boardman High School Summer Jazz Ensemble performed in the rain at the Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre on Aug. 24. The jazz band began to play through a light drizzle, but they had to move further back on the stage when it started to rain harder after a couple songs. The band, led by enthusiastic director Thomas Ruggieri, included current students, as well as young adults who just graduated high school this year and alumni from a couple years back. The group comprised mostly of wind instruments, but they also had a keyboard, bass, drum set and guitar, which gave their band more power. They opened the show with an essential composition, Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood.“ Most jazz bands play this song, but the band’s makeup allowed them to create their own twist on this classic tune, adding solos and a heavy bass noise. They reinterpreted many of the songs they played in a similar fashion, using musical techniques from rock ‘n’ roll, hip hop and funk to add a flavor to classic songs. Their set list comprised of songs across many years, starting with Miller’s 1939 hit and closing with the Jiving Aces’s 2011 cover of the 1969 song “Bring Me Sunshine.“ They went way back on “Orange Colored

Sky“ by Nat King Cole from 1930. Unlike many jazz bands, they included a recent tune, Trombone Shorty’s 2010 jam “Hurricane Season.“ The latter worked well with the band’s strengths as the song uses hip hop beats, a strong low brass and number of solos. Ruggieri also set up the show with a number of genres. The songs they played were even stylistically different when they came from a similar time period. Along with songs from Miller

and Cole, they included 1942’s “A Night in Tunisia“ by Dizzy Gillespie, which used a bebop sound as opposed to Cole’s swing music. They had a girl come out and sing the vocal part to the jazzy pop tune “Big $pender” by Peggy Lee from 1966 only a few songs after playing the funky, higher tempo “Soul Vaccination“ from Tower of Power’s eponymous album from 1973. The concert concluded the Music in the Park concert series in Boardman Park for 2017.
