Here is Marty McFly. Marty came in to Angels for Animals on Sept. 13. He was sadly homeless up until that point. He weighs just about 13.6 pounds, so he doesn’t take up very much room, but he will give you enormous amounts of love. Come meet Marty McFly at the shelter, or call 330-549-1111 and tell them Marty’s ID number is A147159. Marty is one of a kind!
Meet Fluff! Fluff hangs out in this cat condo due to being a tad afraid, but she has plenty of potential with someone who wants to work with her. Fluff came in to Angels for Animals on Sept. 9 and really needs to find a home of her own. She is 5-years-old and is a front paw declaw. Her owner was moving and couldn’t take her with them. She is very beautiful – sleek and black. Call Angels at 330-549-1111. Give them Fluff’s ID # A146969. She is looking for a second chance – it is not her fault that her people moved without her. Fluff is scared and sad, but she wants to come around, and will with your love.

Dairy Queen to host pumpkin hunt Don’t be tardy for this party. This event, on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m., is similar to an old fashioned Easter Egg Hunt, but children are dressed in Halloween costumes. When you hear, “GO,” children run and search for candy, mini pumpkins and prizes in the hay piles. It’s over early, so come early and eat lunch at the Austintown Dairy Queen. Enjoy a $5 Buck Lunch that includes a sandwich, chips, drink and a sundae for dessert. They have new Philly steak sandwiches, chicken bacon ranch sandwiches and turkey BLTs, too. They will take a photo of your child in their costume and have it printed for you for free. Curly the cone and his friends will also be available for pictures. Decorate your own pumpkin the Dairy Queen way. DQ cupcakes and single servings of DQ cake are available for purchase. Icing, sprinkles and jell will be available for you to color it in. Children can also color a pumpkin to take home or hang in the store. The pumpkin hunt and costume contest caters to children between 2- and 9-years-old. All ages are welcome to enjoy lunch, decorate a pumpkin and get a free photo if you wear your costume.

Watch D.O.G.S. program brings male role models into schools By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintow n Intermediate School introduced a new program called Watch D.O.G.S. to the school on Sept. 26. Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) was created in 1998 by a father who wanted to become more involved in his children’s school. The program has since spread to more than 5,300 schools, 47 states and other countries. AIS principa l Jeff Swavel worked with fifth-grade teacher Troy Balint to bring the program to the intermediate school. The staff members were expecting between 100 and 200 people to
show up, but instead there were more than 800 students and their fathers or grandfathers who attended. “It’s about getting male involvement - father, grandfather, uncle - role models in the school,” said Swavel. “We have calendars lined up and we just ask them to pick one day this year that you can come in and volunteer in the building.” The students arrived with their fathers to eat pizza, participate in different activities and learn about the Watch D.O.G.S. program. Some of the PTA members were at the event See WATCH, Page 4

to help the fathers with signing up for different volunteering events. “I think it’s a great idea. So many moms help and the kids are excited about their dads,” said Patty Herman, PTA
president. Some PTA members attended a Watch D.O.G.S. convention with Balint and Swavel to become trained in the program. This allows them to help spread the word around the community about the program. The program will allow the students’ fathers to sign up for different

“But I Know What I Like” art show to be held at YMCA
OUR TOWN
briefs
Neighbors | Submitted
The Y is hosting its fourth annual “But I Know What I Like” art show and sale Oct. 9 through Nov. 20 at the Davis Family YMCA. More than 280 pieces from amateur, emerging and professional artists are on display throughout the building. The twist is that the show is judged by non-professionals, as in, “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like.” The show is taking place in memory of John Patterson, a long time member and budding artist who passed away earlier this year. Patterson painted more than 70 canvases during his time as a student in the Y’s adult painting class. The pieces fall in the genre of Outsider/ Visionary art.... colorful, primitive, child-like pieces often associated with untrained individuals with neurological or developmental disabilities. In addition to awarding one piece the John Patterson Creativity prize, the Y, through the generosity of John and Four Mile Run Church where he was a member, is offering art scholarships to adults on the Asperger/autism spectrum. The first such scholarship recipient is Matt Young of Canfield (shown), who has shown creative promise since his grade school association with Austintown’s after-school program, Artworks. The opening reception for BIKWIL will take place on Oct. 9 from 1-3 p.m. in the lobby gallery. As always, the event at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman, is free and open to the community. For more information, call 330480-5656 or email sgray@youngstownymca.org.

Children lined up to climb the rock wall at Boardman Park for the Family Fun Day event on Sept. 17.
Boardman Park hosted its fifth annual Outdoor Family Day on Sept. 17. The parked was filled with several outdoor activities, as well as some inside the Lariccia Family Community Center. Families could choose from different outdoor activities like a geology dig, archery, climbing a rock wall and fishing. One of the stations set up had live snakes which caught the attention of several children. Inside contained a live Grass Roots band, face painting, taxidermy animals and a deer blind hunting game. “We’ve had a nice steady pace of people throughout the whole day. We gave out over 250 kiddie bags, it’s been a very nice turnout,” said Karen McCallum, the Recreation Director and Education Specialist. Everything was free at the Outdoor Family Day, all that was asked was a donation for
the Second Harvest Food Bank. The main sponsors were Subaru and Armstrong, as well as the Step Outside Grant from the Division of Wildlife. There were many families who attended the event and made sure to stop at each station. There was a DJ outside providing music and entertainment, as well as a wheel the guests could spin to win a prize. The weather allowed the families to spend time outside with each other and experience things they might not have had the chance to outside of the park. “It’s a great opportunity for families to have a lot of outdoor fun,” said McCallum. The event ran from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and families who were interested had the opportunity to stay and have a camp out with the Boy Scouts. There would be a bonfire to roast marshmallows and the chance to participate in a nature hunt.

Greenbriar hosts Cat-urday adoption event By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Greenbriar Healthcare Center hosted a cat adoption event on Sept. 17 for the residents and the public to come play with the cats and consider adopting one. All of the cats are available for adoption through the Animal Charity of Ohio in Canfield. Several kittens were brought in along with two adult cats. People were able to stop by Greenbriar to look at the cats from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Many of the residents from Greenbriar came to play with the cats. One of the residents also filled out an application to adopt a kitten she felt a special bond with.
There were several people who showed up to play with the cats and get more information on adopting. All of the cats brought to Greenbriar are in foster care so they aren’t seen as much as the ones who stay in the shelter. The first to arrive were five kittens who were all siblings, next was a mother cat who came with her three babies and finally Faith, an adult calico. There are currently 30-40 cats at the Animal Charity waiting to be adopted. The Animal Charity of Ohio is running a special for cat adoption.
