Here is Marty McFly. Marty came in to Angels for Animals on Sept. 13. He was sadly homeless up until that point. He weighs just about 13.6 pounds, so he doesn’t take up very much room, but he will give you enormous amounts of love. Come meet Marty McFly at the shelter, or call 330-549-1111 and tell them Marty’s ID number is A147159. Marty is one of a kind!

Meet Fluff! Fluff hangs out in this cat condo due to being a tad afraid, but she has plenty of potential with someone who wants to work with her. Fluff came in to Angels for Animals on Sept. 9 and really needs to find a home of her own. She is 5-years-old and is a front paw declaw. Her owner was moving and couldn’t take her with them. She is very beautiful – sleek and black. Call Angels at 330-549-1111. Give them Fluff’s ID # A146969. She is looking for a second chance – it is not her fault that her people moved without her. Fluff is scared and sad, but she wants to come around, and will with your love.

Children participating in the annual Canfield Dairy Queen Pumpkin Hunt searched through hay to find mini pumpkins and candy on Sept. 24.

Dairy Queen hosts annual Pumpkin Hunt By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Making the most of a beautiful fall day, the Canfield Dairy Queen hosted its annual Pumpkin Hunt for children up to age 10 on Sept. 24. Approximately 150 children searched through the hay to find mini pumpkins and candy which had been hidden by Dairy Queen staffers and volunteers from Rush Church. The 500 mini pumpkins were numbered and when the children were done sifting through the straw, they were asked to check their pumpkins, as corresponding numbers were chosen at random for prizes such as Halloween-themed buckets and gift certificates for Dairy Queen treats, such as Dilly Bars, Blizzards and ice cream cakes.

According to Pamela Simmons, Canfield Dairy Queen staff member in charge of marketing, the store has been having this event for more than 20 years. To make it fair, and to break up the large crowd a bit, a section was set aside for children 4 and under. The other section was for children 5 and up. As a special treat, four golden spoons were hidden in the straw, two on each side. The child who found each spoon received a certificate for a Royal Blizzard. Pastor Jill Barton of Rush Church emceed the event, including welcoming everyone and calling the winning numbers of the raffle tickets. Rush See PUMPKIN, Page 4

Children lined up to climb the rock wall at Boardman Park for the Family Fun Day event on Sept. 17.

Boardman Park hosted its fifth annual Outdoor Family Day on Sept. 17. The parked was filled with several outdoor activities, as well as some inside the Lariccia Family Community Center. Families could choose from different outdoor activities like a geology dig, archery, climbing a rock wall and fishing. One of the stations set up had live snakes which caught the attention of several children. Inside contained a live Grass Roots band, face painting, taxidermy animals and a deer blind hunting game. “We’ve had a nice steady pace of people throughout the whole day. We gave out over 250 kiddie bags, it’s been a very nice turnout,” said Karen McCallum, the Recreation Director and Education Specialist. Everything was free at the Outdoor Family Day, all that was asked was a donation for

the Second Harvest Food Bank. The main sponsors were Subaru and Armstrong, as well as the Step Outside Grant from the Division of Wildlife. There were many families who attended the event and made sure to stop at each station. There was a DJ outside providing music and entertainment, as well as a wheel the guests could spin to win a prize. The weather allowed the families to spend time outside with each other and experience things they might not have had the chance to outside of the park. “It’s a great opportunity for families to have a lot of outdoor fun,” said McCallum. The event ran from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and families who were interested had the opportunity to stay and have a camp out with the Boy Scouts. There would be a bonfire to roast marshmallows and the chance to participate in a nature hunt.

Two sister kittens laid together in their crate during the cat adoption event on Sept. 17 at Greenbriar Healthcare Center in Boardman.

Greenbriar Healthcare Center hosted a cat adoption event on Sept. 17 for the residents and the public to come play with the cats and consider adopting one. All of the cats are available for adoption through the Animal Charity of Ohio in Canfield. Several kittens were brought in along with two adult cats. People were able to stop by Greenbriar to look at the cats from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Many of the residents from Greenbriar came to play with the cats. One of the residents also filled out an application to adopt a kitten she felt a special bond with. There were several people who showed up to play with the cats and get more information on adopting. All of the cats brought to Greenbriar are in foster care so they aren’t seen as much as the ones who stay in the shelter. The first to arrive were five kittens who were all siblings, next was a mother cat who came with her three babies and finally Faith, an adult calico. There are currently 30-40 cats at the Animal Charity waiting to be adopted. The Animal Charity of Ohio is running a special for cat adoption. Anyone looking to adopt more than one cat can get two adult cats for $80 or two kittens for $100, which includes a spay or neuter and the vaccinations.

The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters honored the senior members of the Canfield High School boys soccer team during Senior Night on Sept. 29. Family, friends, teammates and classmates recognized the three senior players Alex Petrallo, Jad Saleh and Tanor English. The senior team members were introduced at Bob Dove Field before the varsity game versus South Range. The players were escorted by their families as they walked through a double line of their teammates after they were greeted by Head Coach Phil Simone. “It’s hard to believe they are seniors. I have worked with some of them since they were young. I still remember them as campers at our Kids Camp

when they were 6- or 7-yearsold. I know there are only three of them this year and it’s not a big class, but that doesn’t change how I feel. They are definitely a very special group,” Simone said. Canfield High School student council provided the flowers for the players’ parents. As part of the celebration, before the game began, the three senior members led their team in running through a hoop banner which recognized the seniors. The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters hosted a dinner in the high school’s cafeteria after the varsity game for the families and teammates of the senior team members. The junior class team members parents organized the dinner to honor the senior players, as is the Canfield High School soccer tradition.

Neighbors wants fall sports news Fall sports have begun and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

CVMS seventh- and eighth-graders defeat Boardman The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team traveled to Boardman and came away with a hard fought 18-0 victory over Boardman Glenwood. Canfield got on the board first when they recovered a Boardman fumble at the Spartan 43yard line. Oliver Kovass sprinted 35 yards around left end to give the Cardinals a first and goal at the 5-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Paolo Papalia snuck over from the one behind the block of center Ryan Bennett for a 6-0 lead. The Cards struck again late in the first half when Papalia hit Kovass streaking down the right sideline with

a 58-yard scoring strike and a 12-0 halftime advantage. Ca n f ield rel ied on t hei r staunch defense in the second half picking off two wayward Spartan aerials. Toby Smith picked of a Glenwood pass and rumbled 40 yards to paydirt to make 18-0. Canfield’s defense front of Jake Grdic, AJ Wise, Landon Beidelshies, Ryan Hively and Anthony Canacci put pressure on the Boardman signal caller throughout the game. Boardman’s hope of avoiding a shutout was thwarted when Jaden Jaffer intercepted the Spartans at the Cardinal 5-yard line to end the game. Coach Donadee cited the

outstanding play of linebackers Drew Carrocce, Smith and Michael Crawford along with defensive backs Ian Hull, Toby Charnesky, Ryan Petro and Kovass for shutting down the Boardman’s offense. Canfield improved to 3-1-1 on the season. The Canfield Middle School eighth-graders improved to 3-01 on the season with 10-6 victory over Boardman Glenwood at Spartan Stadium. Canfield got on the board first following an Ethan Fletcher 35yard run to the Spartan 5. Fullback Chris Sammarone bulled his way into the end zone from the 5-yard line for the touch-

down. Fletcher hit Ron Angelilli with a 2-point conversion to make it 8-0. Canfield drove again deep into Glenwood territory but were turned back at the 10. The Cards defense rose to occasion forcing a Spartan safety for a 10-0 lead. Boardman cut Canfield’s lead to 10-6 midway through the third quarter but were shut down the rest of the way by Canfield’s stellar defensive play. The Card’s Andrew Morchak ended all hopes of a Spartan comeback when he picked off a pass near midfield. Coach Rolla cited the stellar punting of Sammarone as a key factor in the victory.
