Here is Marty McFly. Marty came in to Angels for Animals on Sept. 13. He was sadly homeless up until that point. He weighs just about 13.6 pounds, so he doesn’t take up very much room, but he will give you enormous amounts of love. Come meet Marty McFly at the shelter, or call 330-549-1111 and tell them Marty’s ID number is A147159. Marty is one of a kind!.

Meet Fluff! Fluff hangs out in this cat condo due to being a tad afraid, but she has plenty of potential with someone who wants to work with her. Fluff came in to Angels for Animals on Sept. 9 and really needs to find a home of her own. She is 5-years-old and is a front paw declaw. Her owner was moving and couldn’t take her with them. She is very beautiful – sleek and black. Call Angels at 330-549-1111. Give them Fluff’s ID # A146969. She is looking for a second chance – it is not her fault that her people moved without her. Fluff is scared and sad, but she wants to come around, and will with your love.

Phantoms help students shoot for healthy lifestyles By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Players from the Youngstown Phantoms Hockey Team, as well as front office staff members and Tom Upton, one of the assistant coaches, came to visit the thirdand fourth-grade students at Dobbins Elementary School on Sept. 20. Katie Seminara, Director of Game Day Operations and Community Relations, spoke to the students about the new Phantom’s Power Play Program. The program is designed to encourage children to be active and healthy. The players, coaches and staff speak to students about the importance of exercising and eating healthy. “We want to make sure they are growing as healthy, young children and having a healthy life moving forward,” said Seminara. Jennifer Johnson of Aqua Ohio also had the chance to speak to the students after Seminara. Johnson talked about the importance of water and all of the uses people get from it. The speakers were very engaging with the students. The students would be asked questions about the topic of being healthy and participating in sports. “When we heard about this program that this Phantoms hockey organization has developed and all that it stands for about being healthy and getting a good education and being good citizens, that’s what we believe in too. So we wanted to be part of this and we wanted to help make it possible for this program to come to the school,” said John-

The players who visited were brothers Alex and Eric Esposito and Griffin Loughran. As a special surprise, the Phantoms donated a floor hockey set and equipment to Dobbins. Four students were brought up to the stage to gear up in equipment and try out the new set. Two students were the shooters and the other two were the goalies. The students practiced shooting balls to make goals with help from the players. Before the Phantoms left, there was one last surprise. A pool filled with fish was available for the children and their families who wanted to practice fishing during the Family Fun Day at Boardman Park on Sept. 17.

Boardman Park hosts day of outdoor family fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Boardman Park hosted its fifth annual Outdoor Family Day on Sept. 17. The parked was filled with several outdoor activities, as well as some inside the Lariccia Family Community Center. Families could choose from different outdoor activities like a geology dig, archery, climbing a rock wall and fishing. One of the stations set up had live snakes which caught the attention of several children. Inside contained a live Grass Roots band, face painting, taxidermy animals and a deer blind hunting game. “We’ve had a nice steady pace of people throughout the whole day. We gave out over 250 kiddie bags, it’s been a very nice turnout,” said Karen McCallum, the Recreation Director and Education Specialist. Everything was free at the Outdoor Family Day, all that was asked was a donation for the Second Harvest Food Bank. The main sponsors were Subaru and Armstrong, as well as the Step Outside Grant from the Division of Wildlife. There were many families who attended the event and made sure to stop at each station. There was a DJ outside providing music and entertainment, as well as a wheel the guests could spin to win a prize. The weather allowed the families to spend time outside with each other and experience things they might not have had the chance to outside of the park.

“It’s a great opportunity for families to have a lot of outdoor fun,” said McCallum. The event ran from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and families who were interested had the opportunity

to stay and have a camp out with the Boy Scouts. There would be a bonfire to roast marshmallows and the chance to participate in a nature hunt.

Girls golf compete in Christine Terlesky Golf Invitational The first Christine Terlesky Lake Club Girls Golf Invitational took place on Sept. 19 with a total of 15 teams competing in the event. Division I teams included Boardman, Austintown Fitch, Canfield, Howland, Massillon Jackson, Canton GlenOak and Green. Division II teams included Beaver Local, Champion, Lakeview, Poland, Cardinal Mooney, Ursuline, Warren JFK and Columbiana. The teams played 18 holes, with lunch donated by Chickfil-A before the tournament started. Awards were presented after the tournament by Lake Club owner Ed Muranksy and Dennis Miller, Director of Golf at the Lake Club. Cocca’s Pizza donated the food for the dinner at the awards ceremony. The teams played an 18-hole practice round and then attended a buffet dinner in the Lake Club banquet room. One of the speakers at the dinner was Christine Terlesky, former history teacher and girls basketball and golf coach from Boardman, who is battling ALS. The tournament is being named in her honor. Ed Muransky, President of the Lake Club; Chris Sammartino, Vice-President; and Dennis Miller, Director of Golf provided an exciting first-class tournament. “Ed, Chris and Dennis were very excited about this opportunity to host a local high school girls invitational,” Denise Gorski said. “Ed far exceeded any expectations I had on making this one of the premier high

school outings in the state. And he really wanted to do something to help the Terlesky family out with their medical expenses. As everyone knows, Ed has a big heart and organizes first class events.” The idea for the invitational came about after last year’s state golf tournament. “My husband, Dan, and I went down to watch our boys team and Jacinta Pikunas and Jenna Vivo play at the State Tournament,” Gorski said. “Christine went to the practice round but after that could not attend any more of the tournament. Her family had to eventually take her home. On our way back home, Dan and I talked about how heartbreaking it was and what could we do for her and the family. Then we thought about having a high school girls’ tournament in her honor, something that would be a lasting legacy for her. Being members of the Lake Club, I set up a meeting with Ed, Chris and Dennis and it went from there.” Muransky also allowed for sponsorship levels to help with the Terlesky family expenses and wanted 100 percent of the sponsorships raised to go only to the family and not to any of the tournament expenses. Gorski had to check with OHSAA to make sure on sponsorships so no one’s eligibility was compromised. The Lake Club is the presenting sponsor of the entire tournament. Sponsorship levels were platinum level ($1,000), Gold level ($500), Silver ($250) and Bronze ($100). Those still

interested in a sponsorship can contact Denise Gorski at the Boardman athletic office at 330726-3423. More than $19,000 has already been raised through the sponsorship of this special tournament. “The entire valley community was so very generous and to have close to $19,000 raised in such a short period of time is a tribute to the respect they have for the Terlesky and Moschella families and the generosity of this valley and surrounding communities,” Gorski said. When the tournament concluded, the team from Green High School defeated the Lady Spartans by one stroke, 317-318, in Division I. Massillon Jackson was third (346), Canfield was fourth (350), Canton GlenOak

was fifth (373), Fitch was sixth (433) and Howland placed seventh (470). Spartan senior Jacinta Pikunas was the overall medalist of the entire tournament shooting an impressive score of 69. The Spartans Jenna Vivo and Britney Jonda, both juniors shot a score of 79 to tie for sixth place, overall. Sophomore Maya Stinson shot 91 and Emily Jackson shot a 109 to round out the scoring for the Spartans. In Division II, the Poland Bulldogs won with a team score of 385 points. Columbiana was second (391), Beaver Local third (393), Lakeview fourth (404), Cardinal Mooney fifth (413), Warren JFK sixth (418), Ursuline seventh (438) and Champion finished in eighth place (497).
