Robotics teams battled against each other during the FIRST Robotics Competition charity food drive on Sept. 25 at Austintown Middle School.
Several schools battle robot creations By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown Middle School hosted the third annual Mahoning Valley FIRST Robotics Competition charity food drive on Sept. 25. FIRST Robotics teams from schools across Ohio and Pennsylvania came to AMS to participate in a robotics competition. The competition was free and open to the public, but people were asked to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Second Harvest Foot Bank of the Mahoning Valley. Concessions were also available during the competi-
tion with the proceeds going to help fund future NEOFRA robotics competitions. The robotics competition consists of the robotics teams from different schools battling their robots against each other. The robots would break through the wall obstacles and try to shoot a ball in the other teams’ basket. This competition gives the teams the opportunity to test out the new robots they created on a regulation playing field. In a FIRST Stronghold match, two teams of three robots each try to break into the opponents’ forts, weaken the tower and then capture the tower. The points are scored by beating the op-
ponents’ defense and putting balls into their tower. The game is created to show high energy, real contact and intense action. Sponsorship from Youngstown State University College of STEM and LED3 Premium Displays are what helped make the 2016 MVRC possible.
FREE
The teams are looking forward to participating in the 2017 MVRC and several others to come. This competition allows the teams to have a practice run with their robots before becoming a part of the upcoming robotics competitions all around the United States.

Boardman Park hosted the 12th biannual fall Baby Bargain Boutique on Sept. 24. The Baby Bargain Boutique is put on twice a year, in the spring and fall, at Boardman Park for families to buy and sell gently used items. More than 150 vendors attended the Baby Bargain Boutique and many more than 2,000 people shop those different vendors. There are no commercial vendors, only families selling to other families. The Baby Bargain Boutique provides a way for families to find good deals and connect w ith other families in the community. Several families come to Boardman Park, in the rain or
shine, to look for deals. Those who attend the four hour event are there to bargain shop for themselves as well as others. Many vendors attend one, or both, Baby Bargain Boutiques at Boardman Park year after year hoping to help out other families. While many families are veterans of the event, there are also several people who came for the first time whether it was to be a vendor or to shop. Families return time after time because it gives them a sense of community bonding. People are helping each other out and bringing the community together to have a fun time shopping. The spring Baby Bargain Boutique will take place again in May.

The Youngest Flea hosted its monthly flea market next to the Covelli Center at Freeman Alley on Sept. 24. The f lea market is hosted once a month and local and regional vendors are welcomed to set up a station to sell their items. There are vendors who
sell hand-made jewelry, candles, collectables, clothing and many more items. There are also food vendors who sell items they made locally. The vendors are selected carefully to make sure they all have a true passion for what they make and what they sell to help invest in the growth of the Youngstown community. The flea market brings families
together to shop, listen to music and enjoy food. People from all over the Mahoning Valley attend the flea market to see if they can find anything that catches their eye.
