Baby Bargain Boutique brings community together By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Boardman Park hosted the 12th biannual fall Baby Bargain Boutique on Sept. 24. The Baby Bargain Boutique is put on twice a year, in the spring and fall, at Boardman Park for families to buy and sell gently used items. More than 150 vendors attended the Baby Bargain Boutique and many more than 2,000 people shop those different vendors. There are no commercial vendors, only families selling to other families.
The Baby Bargain Boutique provides a way for families to find good deals and connect with other families in the community. Severa l families come to Boardman Park, in the rain or shine, to look for deals. Those who attend the four hour event are there to bargain shop for themselves as well as others. Many vendors attend one, or both, Baby Bargain Boutiques at Boardman Park year after year hoping to help out other families. While many families are vet-

Glenwood Junior High teacher studies in Australia for summer
Boardman Glenwood Junior High teacher Laura Kibby plans to bring her amazing learning experience in Australia throughout the summer into her eighthgrade science classroom this school year. Kibby is a master’s student in the Global Field Program from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly. In August, she traveled to Australia and studied coral reef ecology and conservation of marine systems along the Great Barrier Reef. She was trained in Australia and through an online course by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. She and her fellow classmates conducted rapid monitoring surveys and participated in the Eye on the Reef Program. Kibby brought back many photos to share with her students at Glenwood, and she plans on using every opportunity to give real world examples in class. “I really learned a lot,” said Kibby. “Not one person can fix everything - there is a community determination that allows conservation efforts to be successful. We learned how the development of apps, like Eye on the Reef, and school curriculum has increased public awareness and support for conservation.”

Boardman Superintendent Tim Saxton said that Kibby is one of the district’s many passionate and involved teachers. “Dedication and excitement outside the classroom can fuel great learning experiences for kids in the classroom. The Y is hosting its fourth annual “But I Know What I Like” art show and sale Oct. 9 through Nov. 20 at the Davis Family YMCA. More than 280 pieces from amateur, emerging and professional artists are on display throughout the building. The twist is that the show is judged by non-professionals, as in, “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like.” The show is taking place in memory of John Patterson, a long time member and budding artist who passed away earlier this year. Patterson painted more than 70 canvases during his time as a student in the Y’s adult painting class. The pieces fall in the genre of Outsider/Visionary art.... colorful, primitive, child-like pieces often associated with untrained individuals with neurological or developmental disabilities. In addition to awarding one piece the John Patterson Creativity prize, the Y, through the generosity of John and Four Mile Run Church where he was a member, is offering art scholarships to adults on the Asperger/ autism spectrum. The first such scholarship recipient is Matt Young of Canfield (shown), who has shown creative promise since his grade school association with Austintown’s after-school program, Artworks. The opening reception for BIKWIL will take place on Oct. 9 from 1-3 p.m. in the lobby gallery. As always, the event at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman, is free and open to the community. For more information, call 330-480-5656 or email sgray@youngstownymca.org.

Children showcase talents at library
By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Boardman library hosted a talent show on Sept. 21 for children of all ages to participate in. Youth librarian Karen Saunders hosted the show and introduced each child as they went to the front of the room to show
off their talent. There were children who told jokes, played the pianos and showed many more talents. Some of the children signed up prior to the event and had time to practice their talent. There were also children in the library who came to the talent show as it started and impro-

vised a talent to show the audience. The families and friends in the audience graciously applauded each child after they finished their performance. After the children performed their talent, they would get a treat bag. Inside the bag there was a little trophy, a library frisbee and a ring laser pointer for
the children to take home. The talent show is normally in the summer time, but Saunders moved it to fall this year to allow more people to attend. Saunders said the talent show has been an event at the library for about 10 years now and she hopes that it will continue to be an annual event.

Forty people from the community gathered at the Becker Family Center in Boardman to attend a dinner and learn to discuss how to protect assets and to make things easier on loved ones. Atty. Karen Bovard from Johnson and Johnson Law Firm in Canfield discussed Medicaid Planning, Wills, Living Wills, Probate and Power of Attorney. Dan Madden, CFSP with Becker Funeral Homes discussed Pre-Arrangement planning and talked on how families can defer costs, inflation proof payment plans, recording final wishes and veterans burial benefits. The program was very well received and we hope to do more events like this in the future. Pictured is Dan Madden, CFSP with Becker Funeral Homes.
