Boardman Park celebrates Halloween with annual weekend fun By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Boardman Park hosted its annual haunted hayrides and The Great Pumpkin Crave-Out Contest on the weekend of Oct. 13-15. The event has become a popular event among families. The park set up a bounce castle, rock wall and hay maze for the weekend. Recreation Director Karen McCallum said she wanted everyone to “enjoy the spooktacular season.“ Both McCallum and Boardman Park Executive Director Dan Slagle emphasized the family atmosphere of the

events. They made the hayrides scar y and Ha lloween based, but they kept it familyfriendly, making sure children of all ages can enjoy it. The Great Pumpkin CraveOut Contest ran all weekend. The park provided pumpkins for a small fee based on the weight of the pumpkin. Then, fa mi lies ca r ved pumpk ins together at one of the tables nearby. The finished pumpkins went on display on bleachers near the park’s playground. The park gave away prizes to the best pumpkins in each age group. The groups were separated into pre-school, kindergarten to fourth grade, fifth to

eighth grade and ninth grade to adult. The Friday night event also had entertainment from Joe Sullivan, who dressed as Old MacDona ld. Su l liva n, a lso known as Jocko the Clown, has been at every The Great Pumpkin Crave-Out Contest and joins the park regularly more than 20 times a year. He chatted with families and made balloon animals throughout the night. The haunted hayride travels around the paved pathways of the park’s trails in the woods. The hayride had more than 20 different stations throughout the small ride, including

aliens, pirates and friendly monsters. The event had help from Mahoning County’s 4H club and the Key Club and PANDA Leaders club at Boa rdma n Schools. Mix 98.9 sponsored the event and played music at their stand throughout the night. The event has run for more than 20 years. Slagle said the event has grown much larger since its inception. The Great Pumpkin CraveOut Contest ran just the weekend of the 13-15, but the hayrides ran that weekend and the last two weekends in October as well.

Boardman library offered a “Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s” event for young children on Sept. 13. Librarian Karen Saunders started the event with “Clap, Clap, Clap Your Hands“ with various directions for hand movements and tempo changes. Saunders used apples as the theme for this week as the event happened during apple harvesting season. Saunders read two stories for the story time aspect of the event. First, she read “Ten Red Apples“ by Pat Hutchins. She handed out different animals cut-outs with magnets on them before the story. She had a magnetic whiteboard next to her with a magnetic tree and apples attached. The children listened intently as they waited for the animal they held to be named. Once Saunders said the animal name, the child walked up and placed the animal on the board and grabbed an apple magnet and placed it by the animal’s mouth. Saunders passed out stuffed animals and paper cut-outs of apples before the second story, “Ten Apples Up on Top“ by Dr. Seuss. The children placed an apple on their stuffed animal as the characters in the story placed apples on their heads,

culminating in ten apples total. The children stood up and balanced the ten apple cut-outs on their heads following the story. The children walked over to the craft table after story time. Saunders demonstrated the craft they would make. They would take a piece of paper, cut one side and fold it to create a mini-booklet. Saunders provided the children with stamps, cut apples and stamp

pads. The children could choose to press the stamp or apple on the stamp pad and stamp their booklet. The cut-in-half apple created a star pattern when stamped on the paper. The Boardman library hosts “Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s“ every Wednesday in the child’s meeting room. The event focuses on literacy and crafting skills of the toddlers.

Judy Jones hosted a presentation on the Main library’s new Career and Job Center on Sept. 12 in the new Career and Job Center. The space will allow the librarians to give one-on-one help to those seeking employment.

Main Library opens Career and Job Center by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Main library continues to strive to meet the community’s needs as they plan to open a Career and Job Center on their second floor. Librarian Judy Jones offered a presentation on the new program in the new room on Sept. 12. The room includes an interactive whiteboard, nine computers and a conference room in the back. The space will be made public in October. The library began working on the center after Gov. John Kasich created a workforce initiative. They want to make a more concerted effort to help the community. The program will keep others up-to-date with the current job climate and practices. These practices include the most efficient and appealing technique to make a resume and the best ways to write a cover letter. Jones also studies to become a trained Career Development Facilitator. The area will offer a number of opportunities for various people. People changing jobs or who have been out of work can get help for navigating through online applications. Those looking to start their careers will be

able to receive critiques on their resumes and cover letters. The staff will give mock interviews for those who need it. The library will help with education as well. They will prepare adults for a GED test. Students heading to college can also stop by to get assistance from the library. The Career and Jobs Center will work heavily with online databases, such as Ohio Means Jobs. They have another subscription with the Job and Career Accelerator, which can be accessed from the library or at home. Anyone with an active PLYMC library card can log in and use the site. The library includes similar sites on their website in the “Career Resources“ section. They will also help the public work on Indeed, Monster and LinkedIn. The program will begin giving one-on-one appointments starting in October. Librarians Jones, Sara Churchill and Sturart Gibbs will be the main staff for the Career and Jobs Center. The library will implement the program slowly and adapt to the needs of the community. Librarian Janet Loew said that the best thing for someone interested would be to contact one of the librarians to set up a time.
