Local Trick-or-Treat times and tips By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@live.com

Trick-or-Treat will take place in our local areas on Oct. 31. Local times include: Austintown: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Boardman: 5-7 p.m. Canfield: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Poland: 5-7 p.m. This annual event can create fun family memories that you and your children will cherish forever, but it also should be a time of caution. Here a re a few tips from safekids.org to WRIGHT keep Trick-orTreat sa fe for your family. 1. Always make sure each member of your group is wearing bright/reflective clothing or carrying a lit flashlight or glow stick. This will help motorists better see your group once the sun sets. 2. Make sure to check the road in both directions, as well as keeping vigilant of cars backing up or pulling forward, before crossing the street. It is safest to cross at corners and using traffic signals and crosswalks when possible. 3. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no side-

walks, make sure you walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible. 4. Children under the age of 12 should not Trick-or-Treat alone at night without adult super v ision. Any groups of u n ac c ompa n ie d Tr ick-orTreaters should stick to familiar areas that are well-lit. For t hose pa rents whose children have food allergy concerns, look for a teal pumpkin to denote homes with a foodfree treat. Additionally, remember to carefully inspect your child’s candy or other goodies prior to allowing them to consume it. Any candy that appears to have been altered or has torn packaging or packaging with holes in it should not be consumed. It is up to a parent’s or guardian’s discretion to ensure the safety of their children during this and all holidays. Drivers should also take extra precautions while driving during Trick-or-Treat times. Any distractions should be silenced or minimized as much as possible. Vigilance should be observed after dark and in neighborhoods, where Trickor-Treaters will likely be walking. Have a Happy (a nd sa fe) Halloween!

GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

The Relay for Life of Austintown teams kicked off the season with a bowling event at Wedgewood Lanes on Oct. 2. This is the second year the Relay for Life team has hosted their relay kick off event at Wedgewood Lanes. Members from t he relay tea m ca me to the lanes and bowled, enjoyed some snacks and the company of other relay members. The kick off event allowed the Relay for Life of Austintown committee members to give out information to the teams about the different events leading up to the Relay for Life in the summer. There are around 20 different teams, and more than 80 people, involved in the Austintown Relay for Life. There are Austin-

town Fitch High School students, members of the Austintown Hollywood Gaming Casino and several others who make teams for Relay for Life. A table was set up with raffle baskets, a 50/50 basket, clothing and other relay items for sale to raise money. The Austintown Relay for Life hosts several other events throughout the year to help raise money and bring community members together. “Typically our kick offs were just like meetings. This way we thought we could do something fun and there’s all kinds of different age groups here,” said Kelly Phillips, the event chair. The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley and Buddy Up for Down Syndrome hosted a Buddy Up Tennis event on Sept. 24 at the Boardman Tennis Center. People of all ages who have Down Syndrome were invited

to participate in the Buddy Up Tennis program throughout the year. There are two or three Saturday sessions a month that occur in January through April, and then again in September through December. This is the third year the program has occurred at the Boardman Tennis Center and children as young as

five years old to people who are young adults attend. “It starts off with a half hour of fitness, about 45 minutes of tennis and then we always finish with a game.” said Melanie Olsen, one of the instructors. Those with Down Syndrome See TENNIS, Page 6

Heather Fronk, reigning as Mrs. Ohio for the current year, spoke to her fellow Rotarians at their Oct. 3 meeting concerning her experiences and how it has changed her perception of herself. By winning the Ohio pageant, Heather also competed in Las Vegas, accompanied by her husband Steve, and encountered challenging questioning and met some fantastic contestants. She cited her work in Rotary that spun off to assisting the Salvation Army and other outlets for her abilities and kindness to inspire others. She thanked the club and members for their support and encouragement. A group of Austintown Rotary and Fitch Interact members joined forces Oct. 15 to cleanup Kirk Road from Route 46 to Whispering Pines Drive. Donna Burnell and two students spoke to the Rotary Club of Austintown at their Oct. 10 meeting. Burrell, Consumer Science teacher at Fitch, created the “closet” upon noticing needs by students in the area of clothing, school supplies, personal hygiene items, interview clothing and shoes. Donated items are used to stock the shelves, with crock pots and frozen meals to fill them also helping families that need weekend meals. Burrell requested the mentioned items, and also gift cards and monetary donations to fill the gaps in donations. She can be reached at Fitch High School by calling 330-7973900. Boy Scouts consolidate into three councils The first quarter of the new year will be the start of an exciting new era for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Northeast Ohio. The BSA has enjoyed a long and rich history locally and recently announced that the volunteer leaders of five area Scouting councils voted this month to consolidate to three councils by early 2017. The five area councils – the Greater Cleveland Council, headquartered in Cleveland; the Great Trail Council, headquartered in Akron; the Greater Western Reserve Council, headquartered in Warren; the Heart of Ohio Council, headquartered in Mansfield; and the Buckeye Council in Canton – will increase efficiency into to three councils to focus Scouting’s resources towards our mission of providing the area’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership.

The remaining three councils will be comprised of: The Buckeye Council, with boundaries stretching from the Marion/Mansfield area to the eastern border of Ohio, along Route 30; The Great Trail Council, encompassing the Akron, Warren and Youngstown communities; and a new council, yet to be named, will be formed along Lake Erie from Ashtabula County to Erie County, incorporating the City of Cleveland. “Many factors go into the decision to realign councils, and the most important consideration is how we can best deliver Scouting to these communities,” said Todd Walter, BSA Area Director. “Our priority is to provide a strong Scouting program for more than 36,000 youth we serve across Northeast Ohio – and we can better accomplish this with these five councils operating in a different manner.”

Key volunteer leadership from each of the five councils began meeting earlier this year to discuss possibilities for making the delivery of Scouting program in these communities more efficient and sustainable. These discussions culminated in town hall meetings hosted in Akron, Canfield, Cleveland, Mansfield, Marion and Wakeman in the month of August and council board including charter representatives votes in the month of September. “The new structure will provide enhanced opportunities for our Scouts, more resources to recruit and support additional youth members and adult leaders, and far more opportunity to be innovative in making Scouting strong,” said Darr yl Dillenback, NE Ohio Sustainability Committee Chair. “We plan to build on the exciting work we’ve done in

our communities, including countless hours of community service, thousands of lives impacted through camping programs and values-driven leadership development opportunities for the boys and girls we serve.” There are exciting changes ahead and volunteer leadership across the councils are working to ensure a seamless transition for Scouts, parents, leaders and local volunteers. Local church to host seminar aimed at veteran care Redeemer Lutheran Church will host a workshop titled “Binding the Wounds of War” on Nov. 5 at the church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. The seminar/workshop is being offered in order to better prepare our community, and specifically those who work and live with veterans, to help veterans make healthy transitions back into civilian life. The workshop is open to clergy, Stephens Ministers, counselors, therapists, social workers and anyone who wants to help our veterans and their families. Attendees will: 1. Have a greater understanding of traumatic stress injuries and how to identify the most common forms of this type of injury; 2. Understand how military culture affects service members and their return to civilian life; 3. Understand the unique challenges of military service as it relates to barriers between caregivers, service members and their families. This will be an allday workshop from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with coffee, snacks and lunch provided. MCCTC flower shop opens The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. The Austintown and Poland libraries hosted a special Chef Battle event on Sept. 24 for children to watch and participate in. The Cooking Caravan is a group of chefs, educators and people who all share the love for cooking, entertaining and

helping educate children on food. Cooking Caravan helps children try things outside of the box and try meals prepared by ingredients they may or may not heard of before. “Sometimes it’s easy to get stuck in these little food boxes where we eat the same thing over and over again and we don’t

Johnson under the name The Spoons. This battle, Johnson redeemed himself and the Spoons won the competition with their fruit juice concoction. The program allowed children to try meals that were out of their comfort zone while cheering on their peers. The Cooking Caravan travels around the Ohio area to teach cooking classes, participate in chef battles and several other fun and education food-related programs.

All of the money earned goes back to Paw Platoon to help with rescues and veterinary assistance. “The biggest thing with us is that we are a veteran operated rescue,” said Paul Poulos, the president of Paw Platoon and Boardman police officer. Paw Platoon is a foster-based Dog Rescue orga n i zat ion. They are a 501(c)(3)non-profit organization consisting of all volunteers. Paw Platoon showcases the spirit of the solder by dedicating available resources to local humane societies and dog pounds, along with other non-profit organizations with similar goals. Several people showed up to the Fall Fun event to get their pictures taken with their pets, buy baked goods and the new hoodies. Families also brought the dogs in they were fostering through Paw Platoon in the chance of finding them a forever home. “We have a good animal rescue community here and for the most part we work together,” said Poulos.
