Local Trick-or-Treat times and tips By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@live.com

Trick-or-Treat will take place in our local areas on Oct. 31. Local times include: Austintown: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Boardman: 5-7 p.m. Canfield: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Poland: 5-7 p.m. This annual event can create fun family memories that you and your children will cherish forever, but it also should be a time of caution. Here a re a few tips from safekids.org to WRIGHT keep Trick-orTreat sa fe for your family. 1. Always make sure each member of your group is wearing bright/reflective clothing or carrying a lit flashlight or glow stick. This will help motorists better see your group once the sun sets. 2. Make sure to check the road in both directions, as well as keeping vigilant of cars backing up or pulling forward, before crossing the street. It is safest to cross at corners and using traffic signals and crosswalks when possible. 3. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no side-

walks, make sure you walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible. 4. Children under the age of 12 should not Trick-or-Treat alone at night without adult super v ision. Any groups of u n ac c ompa n ie d Tr ick-orTreaters should stick to familiar areas that are well-lit. For t hose pa rents whose children have food allergy concerns, look for a teal pumpkin to denote homes with a foodfree treat. Additionally, remember to carefully inspect your child’s candy or other goodies prior to allowing them to consume it. Any candy that appears to have been altered or has torn packaging or packaging with holes in it should not be consumed. It is up to a parent’s or guardian’s discretion to ensure the safety of their children during this and all holidays. Drivers should also take extra precautions while driving during Trick-or-Treat times. Any distractions should be silenced or minimized as much as possible. Vigilance should be observed after dark and in neighborhoods, where Trickor-Treaters will likely be walking. Have a Happy (a nd sa fe) Halloween!

One rider and horse went all out in the spirit of breast cancer awareness, embracing the color pink for the third annual Survivor Run at Buckeye Horse Farm on Oct. 1.

Forty-four riders, decked out in the color of the day - pink, participated in this year’s Survivor Run. Not only were the riders and volunteers deck out in pink, but the horses were too, with pink manes, pink tails, pink ribbons and pink blankets, and even a pink horse. “I started the Survivor’s Run to raise awareness, and wasn’t rea l ly focusing on ra ising money, but last year, thanks to our riders and generous donations, we raised over $1,000. We wanted to share our passion for riding and expose new riders to the sport, along with raising awareness, and this is a great way to do that,” Hruska said. Hruska said the number of riders is up from last year, most likely, she thinks, because they wanted to come out and support Sullivan. “About a mont h ago, my mother was diagnosed with bone cancer. Her breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2013, metastasized into bone cancer. She is going through radiation now. I think more people came out this year in support of her, which is wonderful,” Hruska said. Thanks to several donors, Hruska was able to award prizes to the riders in several categories, including the top 10 place riders, best use of pink and turtle prizes for the last ones to finish the ride. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center donated goody bags for the riders. Riders also received breakfast, lunch and dinner, completion awards and T-shirts. Girl Scout Troop 80495 members, including Jessica and Julia Megown, volunteered during the ride and decorated pumpkins for the event. Proceeds from t he event will be donated to the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center to support Joanie’s Promise Fund.

Ava Arundel (left) was named a winner in the Ohio Schools magazine’s annual Create a Cover Contest, with the help of Hilltop Elementary School physical education teacher Linda Magyar (right) who sent in Arundel’s drawing to the contest.

Canfield student wins art contest By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

As a fourth-grade student at Hilltop Elementary School last year, Ava Arundel was named a winner in the Ohio Schools magazine Create a Cover Contest. Hilltop’s Physical Education Teacher Linda Magyar sent in 21 entries to the annual design competition, with Arundel’s being named one of three winners in the kindergarten through fourth-grade division. The contest is open to all students enrolled in grades K-12 in public schools in Ohio. All winners were published in the June 2016 issue of Ohio

Schools magazine, with the grand prize appearing on the cover. As a Canfield Village Middle School fifth-grade student this school year, Arundel was excited to be named a winner. “I was really excited to win. I enjoy drawing and I wanted to see if I could win the contest and I wanted to get my drawing in the magazine,” Arundel said. The theme of the contest the students were to focus on this year was ‘What I like most about my school.’ Arundel focused on her favorite subject, Science. “Science is my favorite subject, so I wanted to create a drawing about science to show

how much I like it,” Arundel said. A r u ndel w a s aw a rded a Barnes and Noble gift card, a thank you letter and a copy of Ohio Schools magazine. Magyar presented all the students from Hilltop who entered the contest with a certificate of achievement. “I told all my students about the contest and 21 of them turned in drawings. They all received certificates of achievement because they deserved some recognition for entering. I think it’s very impressive that Ava was one of three winners in her category, out of all the schools in Ohio,” Magyar said.

Boy Scouts consolidate into three councils The first quarter of the new year will be the start of an exciting new era for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Northeast Ohio. The BSA has enjoyed a long and rich history locally and recently announced that the volunteer leaders of five area Scouting councils voted this month to consolidate to three councils by early 2017. The five area councils – the Greater Cleveland Council, headquartered in Cleveland; the Great Trail Council, headquartered in Akron; the Greater Western Reserve Council, headquartered in Warren; the Heart of Ohio Council, headquartered in Mansfield; and the Buckeye Council in Canton – will increase efficiency into to three councils to focus Scouting’s resources towards our mission of providing the area’s foremost youth program of character development and

values-based leadership. The remaining three councils will be comprised of: The Buckeye Council, with boundaries stretching from the Marion/Mansfield area to the eastern border of Ohio, along Route 30; The Great Trail Council, encompassing the Akron, Warren and Youngstown communities; and a new council, yet to be named, will be formed along Lake Erie from Ashtabula County to Erie County, incorporating the City of Cleveland. “Many factors go into the decision to realign councils, and the most important consideration is how we can best deliver Scouting to these communities,” said Todd Walter, BSA Area Director. “Our priority is to provide a strong Scouting program for more than 36,000 youth we serve across Northeast Ohio – and we can better accomplish this with these five

councils operating in a different manner.” Key volunteer leadership from each of the five councils began meeting earlier this year to discuss possibilities for making the delivery of Scouting program in these communities more efficient and sustainable. These discussions culminated in town hall meetings hosted in Akron, Canfield, Cleveland, Mansfield, Marion and Wakeman in the month of August and council board including charter representatives votes in the month of September. “The new structure will provide enhanced opportunities for our Scouts, more resources to recruit and support additional youth members and adult leaders, and far more opportunity to be innovative in making Scouting strong,” said Darr yl Dillenback, NE Ohio Sustainability Commit-

tee Chair. “We plan to build on the exciting work we’ve done in our communities, including countless hours of community service, thousands of lives impacted through camping programs and values-driven leadership development opportunities for the boys and girls we serve.” There are exciting changes ahead and volunteer leadership across the councils are working to ensure a seamless transition for Scouts, parents, leaders and local volunteers. Our intent is programming and camping opportunities will remain the same for 2017, while the new council structures are formatted and leadership has the opportunity to evaluate all programs for 2018 and beyond. A dog up for adoption got to know another dog who came to the Youngstown flea market on Sept. 24 with it’s owners.

The Youngest Flea hosted its monthly flea market next to the Covelli Center at Freeman Alley on Sept. 24. The flea market is hosted once a month and local and regional vendors are welcomed to set up a station to sell their items. There are vendors who sell hand-made jewelry, candles, collectables, clothing and many more items. There are also food vendors who sell items they made locally. The vendors are selected carefully to make sure they all have a true passion for what they make and what they sell to help invest in the growth of the Youngstown community. The flea market brings families together to shop, listen to music and enjoy food. People from all over the Mahoning Valley attend the flea market to see if they can find anything that catches their eye. The Youngstown Flea creates opportunities for members of the community to showcase their talents and share them with others who may enjoy similar interests. Youngstown Flea also partners with different groups and organizations to help allow people of all ages, backgrounds and skill to support and be a part of the local community. The next flea market will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Oct. 22 and will have a free yoga class at the beginning of the event.

Paw Platoon hosted a Fall Fun fundraising event and bake sale at the Boardman Pet Supplies Plus on Oct. 1. Pets showed up for the Fall Fun event to get treats and pictures taken in the photo booth, provided by Me and You and a Photo Booth Too. A table was set up with props and different costumes the animals could wear for their pictures. There was a table with baked goods and two new hoodies debuted from the Paw Platoon, available for people to buy to help raise money. All of the money earned goes back to Paw Platoon to help with rescues and veterinary assistance. “The biggest thing with us is that we are a veteran operated rescue,” said Paul Poulos, the

president of Paw Platoon and Boardman police officer. Paw Platoon is a foster-based Dog Rescue orga n i zat ion. They are a 501(c)(3)non-profit organization consisting of all volunteers. Paw Platoon showcases the spirit of the solder by dedicating available resources to local humane societies and dog pounds, along with other non-profit organizations with similar goals. Several people showed up to the Fall Fun event to get their pictures taken with their pets, buy baked goods and the new hoodies. Families also brought the dogs in they were fostering through Paw Platoon in the chance of finding them a forever home. “We have a good animal rescue community here and for the most part we work together,” said Poulos.

CHS soccer goes pink for Pink Out By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Canfield High School seniors and varsity soccer players Jad Saleh and Cece Shaer wanted to raise breast cancer awareness for their National Honor Society service projects, so they organized a Pink Out during the girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Hickory, and the boys junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Warren G. Harding on Oct. 8. Through the Pink Outs, Shaer, daughter of James and Andrea Shaer, and Saleh, son of Ayman and Heidi Saleh, raised money for Yellow Brick Place, a cancer wellness center for the tri-county area, and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. Saleh and Shaer also sold Pink Out T-shirts during high school lunch periods and soccer games leading up to the Pink Outs. Yellow Brick Place, co-founded by President Donna Detwiler and Vice President Anna Aey, provides support to cancer survivors, families and caregivers. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center delivers accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care. “The Yellow Brick Place offers a variety of services, including

support counseling, a resource library and healing therapies. We helped 280 patients in the last year. We are here for both patients and caregivers. The soccer Pink Out is just wonderful. We appreciate it so much. We are so blessed to be involved in such a great program with the soccer teams. It is so great to see the students giving back and getting a better understanding about service. That is so important,” Detwiler said. Players on both the boys junior varsity and varsity and girls junior varsity and varsity wore donated pink jerseys for their respective games. The Canfield Soccer Boosters donated pink socks for all players to wear for the games. All junior varsity and varsity players were announced prior to their games and cancer dedications to loved ones were announced for all players. “I chose the Pink Out as my NHS project because it is a great cause. It is a great opportunity to raise breast cancer awareness. We have received such great support from the community. It humbles me to see the community come together and be willing to help for such a great cause. We have had so many donations from both the community and our soccer families,” Saleh said. Saleh and Shaer also had a table set up to sell breast cancer awareness items, such as pink
