Local Trick-or-Treat times and tips By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@live.com

Trick-or-Treat will take place in our local areas on Oct. 31. Local times include: Austintown: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Boardman: 5-7 p.m. Canfield: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Poland: 5-7 p.m. This annual event can create fun family memories that you and your children will cherish forever, but it also should be a time of caution. Here a re a few tips from safekids.org to WRIGHT keep Trick-orTreat sa fe for your family. 1. Always make sure each member of your group is wearing bright/reflective clothing or carrying a lit flashlight or glow stick. This will help motorists better see your group once the sun sets. 2. Make sure to check the road in both directions, as well as keeping vigilant of cars backing up or pulling forward, before crossing the street. It is safest to cross at corners and using traffic signals and crosswalks when possible. 3. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no side-

walks, make sure you walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible. 4. Children under the age of 12 should not Trick-or-Treat alone at night without adult super vision. Any groups of u nac c ompa n ie d Tr ick-orTreaters should stick to familiar areas that are well-lit. For t hose pa rents whose ch i ld ren have food a l lerg y concerns, look for a teal pumpk in to denote homes with a food-free treat. Additionally, remember to carefully inspect your child’s candy or other goodies prior to allowing them to consume it. A ny candy that appears to have been altered or has torn packaging or packaging with holes in it should not be consumed. It is up to a parent’s or guardian’s discretion to ensure the safety of their children during this and all holidays. Drivers should also take extra precautions while driving during Trick-or-Treat times. Any distractions should be silenced or minimized as much as possible. Vigilance should be observed after dark and in neighborhoods, where Trickor-Treaters will likely be walking. Have a Happy (and safe) Halloween!

Children cook creative concoctions at Chef Battle By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown and Poland libraries hosted a special Chef Battle event on Sept. 24 for children to watch and participate in. The Cooking Caravan is a group of chefs, educators and people who all share the love for cooking, entertaining and helping educate children on food. Cooking Caravan helps

children try things outside of the box and try meals prepared by ingredients they may or may not heard of before. “Sometimes it’s easy to get stuck in these little food boxes where we eat the same thing over and over again and we don’t want to try new things. Today we provided the opportunity to try some new stuff,” said John Croke, the emcee and Artistic Director of Cooking Caravan.

At Poland, two children were selected to be sous chefs for chef Chuck Johnson and chef John Skaggs. Lola worked with Skaggs while Emma worked with Johnson. Lola and Skaggs took the win with their orange, banana and sweet potato dish. During the Austintown chef battle, sous chef Chase worked with Skaggs under the team name The Cool Carrots and sous chef Lauren worked with Johnson under the name The

Spoons. This battle, Johnson redeemed himself and the Spoons won the competition with their fruit juice concoction. The program allowed children to try meals that were out of their comfort zone while cheering on their peers. The Cooking Caravan travels around the Ohio area to teach cooking classes, participate in chef battles and several other fun and education food-related programs.

GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Sausage sandwich sale fundraiser to be Oct. 29 Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland, will host a sausage sandwich sale and basket auction to support its Growth Fund. This fund covers expenses for capital improvements to assist in the congregation’s ministries. The fundraiser is scheduled for Oct. 29, 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., or until sandwiches are sold out. The Youngest Flea hosted its monthly flea market next to the Covelli Center at Freeman Alley on Sept. 24. The f lea market is hosted once a month and local and regional vendors are welcomed to set up a station to sell their items. There are vendors who sell hand-made jewelry, candles, collectables, clothing and many more items. There are

also food vendors who sell items they made locally. The vendors are selected carefully to make sure they all have a true passion for what they make and what they sell to help invest in the growth of the Youngstown community. The flea market brings families together to shop, listen to music and enjoy food. People from all over the Mahoning Valley attend the flea market to see if they can find anything that catches their eye. The Youngstown Flea creates

opportunities for members of the community to showcase their talents and share them with others who may enjoy similar interests. Youngstown Flea also partners with different groups and organizations to help allow people of all ages, backgrounds and skill to support and be a part of the local community. The next flea market will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Oct. 22 and will have a free yoga class at the beginning of the event.

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley and Buddy Up for Down Syndrome hosted a Buddy Up Tennis event on Sept. 24 at the Boardman Tennis Center. People of all ages who have Down Syndrome were invited to participate in the Buddy Up Tennis program throughout the year. There are two or three

Saturday sessions a month that occur in January through April, and then again in September through December. This is the third year the program has occurred at the Boardman Tennis Center and children as young as five years old to people who are young adults attend. “It starts off with a half hour of fitness, about 45 minutes of tennis and then we always finish with a game.” said Melanie

Olsen, one of the instructors. Those with Down Syndrome are Athletes and several people volunteer their time to be a Buddy. There are tennis players from high schools in the area like Canfield, Boardman, Poland and Ursuline. Members from the Youngstown State University tennis team also volunteer to work with the athletes. Buddy Up Tennis gives people who have Down Syndrome the opportunity to learn while having fun. The program was originated in Columbus and is currently popping up more place around Ohio. This allows those

with Down Syndrome to have a chance to try something they might not have been able to do otherwise. “It is great for their exercise, it’s great for their socialization and they’re learning the basics of tennis,” said Olsen. There will be other sessions in October, November and December that people can attend

More information can be found about the program at BuddyUpTennis.com. “It’s a really beautiful thing to see them all out here and interacting. We’re more alike than we are different. A bunch of people having a good time together,” said Olsen.

The first quarter of the new year will be the start of an exciting new era for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Northeast Ohio. The BSA has enjoyed a long and rich history locally and recently announced that the volunteer leaders of five area Scouting councils voted this month to consolidate to three councils by early 2017. program for more than 36,000 youth we serve across Northeast Ohio – and we can better accomplish this with these five councils operating in a different manner.” Key volunteer leadership from each of the five councils began meeting earlier this year to discuss possibilities for making the delivery of Scouting program in these communities more efficient and sustainable. These discussions culminated in town hall meetings hosted in Akron, Canfield, Cleveland, Mansfield, Marion and Wakeman in the month of August and council board including charter representatives votes in the month of September. “The new structure will provide enhanced opportunities for our Scouts, more resources to recruit and support additional youth members and adult leaders, and far more opportunity to be innovative in making Scouting strong,” said Darr yl Dillenback, NE Ohio Sustainability Committee Chair. “We plan to build on the exciting work we’ve done in our communities, including countless hours of community service, thousands of lives impacted through camping programs and values-driven leadership development opportunities for the boys and girls we serve.” There are exciting changes ahead and volunteer leadership across the councils are working to ensure a seamless transition for Scouts, parents, leaders and local volunteers. Paw Platoon hosted a Fall Fun fundraising event and bake sale at the Boardman Pet Supplies Plus on Oct. 1. Pets showed up for the Fall Fun event to get treats and pictures taken in the photo booth, provided by Me and You and a Photo Booth Too. A table was set up with props and different costumes the animals could wear for their pictures. There was a table with baked goods and two new hoodies

debuted from the Paw Platoon, available for people to buy to help raise money. All of the money earned goes back to Paw Platoon to help with rescues and veterinary assistance. “The biggest thing with us is that we are a veteran operated rescue,” said Paul Poulos, the president of Paw Platoon and Boardman police officer. Paw Platoon is a foster-based Dog Rescue organization. They are a 501(c)(3)non-profit organization consisting of all volunteers. Paw Platoon showcases the spirit of the solder by dedicating

available resources to local humane societies and dog pounds, along with other non-profit organizations with similar goals. Several people showed up to the Fall Fun event to get their pictures taken with their pets, buy baked goods and the new hoodies. Families also brought the dogs in they were fostering through Paw Platoon in the chance of finding them a forever home. “We have a good animal rescue community here and for the most part we work together,” said Poulos.

Author speaks about 9/11 with Poland students

Author Nora Raleigh Baskin visited Poland McKinley Elementary and Poland Middle School on Oct. 5 to speak about Sept. 11 and her new book “Nine, Ten: A September 11 Story.” The visit was broken into two parts, one for the fifth- and sixthgrade students at McKinley and one for the seventh- and eighthgrade students at Poland Middle. Baskin spoke to the students

about her book, which helps children better understand the seriousness of Sept. 11. Baskin’s book was about four children who had never met, but had more in common than they expected. There were four core values that the story was based on: chance, xenophobia, sacrifice and heroism. Baskin said the inspiration for her book came from the assassination of Robert Kennedy, which she was alive to experience, and also the assassinations of Martin Luther King

Jr. and John F. Kennedy. “Overnight it felt like the world just changed. It became a place of great division, there was a lot of conflict between the police and the people who were protesting the world,” said Baskin. “This is the world I grew up in, it wasn’t the world when I was 2-years-old. My world was very affected by those three events.” The students who are currently in grade school were all born after the events of Sept. 11, 2001 occurred. Baskin gave the

students a lesson about 9/11 using her book to make it easier for them to understand, rather than reading from a textbook. The book focused more on the days of the four main characters leading up to 9/11 and the events that

took place after. Baskin hoped the students walked away from the assembly with a better understanding of 9/11 which will help with the lessons they will learn in the classroom.
