LESTAT
At Angels For Animals in Canfield, there is the beautiful Ella. Ella is a very dignified Tortie who was born on March 10, 2013. She came in to the shelter on Nov. 4, 2015. She was returned to Angels when the landlord changed hands and told her former owner that no cats were allowed. Her identification number is A088312. If you would like to meet Ella, stop by Angels For Animals to see her. She is very loving and gets along with the other cats in their room.
This timid little kitty is named Lestat. Lestat is a handsome gray/blue smoky guy at about 5-months-old. He will definitely need someone to work with him to get over being scared. He should be the only cat in the household, at least for awhile, but he does get along with other cats in the room so maybe one other cat would help him come out of his shell. He loves to play! Lestat’s identification number is A141087.

Halloween party brings in large crowd By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown Bounce worked with Home Savings and Loan to host its annual Halloween Party on Oct. 21. One hu nd red a nd t h i r t y children attended the event to participate in the Halloween activities. Many of the children arrived in their Halloween costumes and got a treat bag as they entered the door. The treat bags consisted of a pencil
and a ticket used to guess how many pieces of candy were in a jar. The winner would receive a special prize. The children used their treat bags as a trick or treat bag during the parade. The event was open from 6-9 p.m. and had a steady stream of guests coming in throughout the event. The children could participate in a Halloween parade and there were four stations set up for children to stop and and re-
ceive a piece of candy. The concession stand sold snacks and the bounce houses and other arcade games were open for the children to play with. Bruce Shepas, co-owner, said he was happy with the turnout. This year’s Halloween party brought in the most people than any previous party. Shepas was expecting close to 100 children and his expectations were surpassed.
The Halloween party has been an event that Austintown Bounce has hosted since Shepas and co-owner Harold Porter opened the business. With the growing success, the Halloween party will continue to be hosted by Austintown Bounce. Several other holiday parties are hosted at Austintown Bounce throughout the year. More information can be found on the Austintown Bounce Facebook page.

Students and families from Aust i ntow n Inter med iate and Elementary School celebrated the third annual pep rally on Oct. 6 in the parking lot at Austintown Intermediate School. Faculty members, parents and students from Fitch high school volunteered to work the different stations at the pep rally. There were bounce houses provided by Austintown Bounce, food provided by Pizza Hut and Barry Dyngles and several other games and activities for the students to participate in. The admission price for tickets was $3, which allowed the
children to do everything in the pep rally for free except the dunk tank and the concessions. More than 250 tickets were sold prior to the event and several other students bought tickets at the pep rally with more than 300 students showing up to the pep rally. The money raised from the pep rally goes back to the students to help fund their holiday parties and other activities throughout the school year. “The students get a little bit of freedom to play at school and talk to their friends because they don’t get a lot of that. They get the freedom to play and have fun,” said Mandy Richmond, PTA member and pep rally cochair.
Austintown Fitch High School students from National Honor Society, the football team, the robotics team and other organizations volunteered to help with the pep rally and spend time with the younger students. Having the high school students volunteer gave the younger students the opportunity to spend time with the people they look up to. “I like the dunk tank, it’s really excited to see the kids get excited after they knock the teachers in,” said Kacie Tekach, senior NHS member who volunteered for the pep rally. The pep rally was to get the students into the Falcon spirit for the homecoming football game on Oct. 7 and the homecoming dance on Oct. 8.

The Boardman Rotary Club hosted its 40th annual Oktoberfest at Boardman Park on Oct. 2. Thousands of people made their way to Boardman Park to celebrate Oktoberfest by exploring more than 150 vendors and eating food from 15 different food trucks. The event ran from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. with plenty of activities, vendors and performances to enjoy. The Rotary Club’s co-chairs Joe Ignazio and Ted Thornton, along with the other members of the Rotary Club, work tediously year after year to make the event a success.
“Everything we make here goes right back to the community. Not only for Boardman, but for Youngstown and North Lima,” said co-chair Joe Ignazio. The event is always offered on the fourth Sunday after Labor Day and is weather-driven; the nicer the weather, the more people who come out to attend. A children’s area with drums, cornhole, a bounce-a-round and arts and crafts is available for children of all ages to participate in. There were stations for face painting, pumpkin paintings and plenty of dogs to pet. Boardman Rotary Club has hosted Oktoberfest at Board-

man Park for all 40 years and plans on continuing to host the event there for future Oktoberfests. Admission is $3 for adults and children older than 12-years-old. There is free parking on-site and free parking offsite with a shuttle to take guests to Boardman Park. “The first time we had it, it was 1,000 people and now it’s crazy. We give back about $5060,000 a year and we don’t keep one penny of it,” said Ignazio. Oktoberfest is a long-standing tradition that attracts several people. It is the largest fundraiser for the Boardman Rotary Club to collect money and donate back to the community.

Ch i ld ren at tended t he monthly Sprout Club on Oct. 13 at Fellows Riverside Gardens. The theme of Sprout Club was potatoes and Lynn Zocolo, horticulture educator, taught the children about different kinds of potatoes and what they’re used for. The program started off with children coloring a picture of potatoes until everyone arrived and was ready to begin. Zocolo got the children engaged by passing around different kinds of potatoes for them to feel, smell and look at. “We are going to be mashing potatoes, doing some science experiences, food coloring. Things like what is a potato, how do you like to eat potatoes,” said Zocolo. After the children learned about the different types of potatoes and how they are grown, each child got their own po-

He is a partner at Landers-Lewis Insurance. Oles has a long history of service to his parishes and to Cardinal Mooney High School. For his parishes, he has been a parish-transformation leader, finance-council member, young-adult-ministry leader, special-parish-religious-education-for-people-with-disabilities (SPRED) leader and an altar server. For Mooney, Oles created the Jamie Serich Memorial Scholarship, which distributed $94,000 since 2010 to benefit Cardinal Mooney and Lumen Christi students. He has financially supported multiple families by providing tuition assistance, was a speaker at a football playoff rally, maintained relationships with alum-
ni across a broad spectrum of graduating years and was the organizer of the 10-year Class of 2001 reunion. “Ca rd i na l Mooney Hig h School is my passion,” Oles said. “It’s where I learned the most valuable lessons in my life. Sanctity, scholarship and discipline have been the pillars that gave me structure to succeed. I am very blessed to have this opportunity to return to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney.” Oles joins Cardinal Mooney from employment as Quality Assurance Manager for Union Tank Car Company’s repair business unit in Chicago. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer engineering from the Ohio State University, a Master of Management degree from Saint Joseph University and a Master of Science degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. When asked what his plans are as president of Cardinal Mooney, Oles said, “I plan to listen to the Bishop, Superintendent, parents, students and supporters of the Mooney family to gain a better understanding of where we are and where we need to grow.”
