LESTAT

At Angels For Animals in Canfield, there is the beautiful Ella. Ella is a very dignified Tortie who was born on March 10, 2013. She came in to the shelter on Nov. 4, 2015. She was returned to Angels when the landlord changed hands and told her former owner that no cats were allowed. Her identification number is A088312. If you would like to meet Ella, stop by Angels For Animals to see her. She is very loving and gets along with the other cats in their room.

This timid little kitty is named Lestat. Lestat is a handsome gray/blue smoky guy at about 5-months-old. He will definitely need someone to work with him to get over being scared. He should be the only cat in the household, at least for awhile, but he does get along with other cats in the room so maybe one other cat would help him come out of his shell. He loves to play! Lestat’s identification number is A141087.

Canfield Police Department School Resource Officer Steve Garstka fingerprinted a Hilltop Elementary School kindergartner for the Child Safety Fingerprint ID Kits the department provided for kindergartners Sept. 28.

SAFETY

Continued from Page 3

“This is the third year the Canfield Police Department has partnered with Canfield Local School District to do the Child Safety Fingerprint ID Kits. The first year we fingerprinted every elementary school student, so now we concentrate on the kindergartners at both schools, as they are new to the district. The Child Safety Fingerprint ID Kits are a service the police department provides, as a

safety precaution. It is our job to keep the students safe, and the fingerprint kits will help us do that,” Officer Garstka said. Students were given a letter to their parents from Chief of Police Charles Colucci explaining the process. The letter also served as a permission slip and had to be signed and returned to the school for the student to be able to participate. “We are excited to provide this important safety initiative to our elementary-aged children, and would like to thank Superintendent Geordan for his

support,” Chief Colucci said. Officer Garstka said this collaborative effort has caught the attention of other school resource officers may be able to benefit other students, not just Canfield. “The Canfield Police Department’s partnership with Canfield Local Schools concerning Child Safety Fingerprint ID Kits has caught the attention of other school resource officers. I have received great feedback and even received a phone call from another school resource officer asking how we do this,” Officer Garstka said.

Sister Jerome’s Mission, a program of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, and the program’s advisory committee named a scholarship in honor of Clarence R. “Sonny” Smith Jr. and Rose Marie Smith during a dinner celebration on Oct. 9, acknowledging the couple’s long-time support of Sister Jerome and her ministries. The Clarence R. and Rose Marie Smith Scholarship will be presented each year to an outstanding student or students taking part in Sister Jerome’s Mission College program. Sister Jerome’s Mission College program breaks the cycle of generational poverty by helping students from low-income families to succeed in college. In addition to pairing students with knowledgeable mentors who guide them through the higher education experience, Sister Jerome’s Mission College program also provides financial assistance for essentials such as food, clothing and transportation. This makes it possible for students to get to class, focus on their studies, earn good grades and graduate well-prepared for jobs that enable them to support themselves and their families.

Clarence Smith is a long-time friend and supporter of Sister Jerome and her ministries and serves on the advisory committee of Sister Jerome’s Mission. A successful businessman, Smith led Diamond Steel Construction Co., a company founded by his father more than 85 years ago, established Compco Industries, Compco Land Co. and has been instrumental in the start-ups of several other area businesses. Smith’s success enables him to support many philanthropic organizations and causes. Providing a solid education to the region’s young people has been and remains at the heart of many of those activities, including Sister Jerome’s Mission College program. The first recipient of the Clarence R. and Rose Marie Smith Scholarship, Ramone A. Elkins, is a graduate of Youngstown’s East High School. He earned an associate’s degree in general studies from Erie Community College – North, in Buffalo, N.Y. and is attending Walsh University in North Canton on an athletic scholarship. He expects to graduate in 2017 with a degree in physical education. His longterm goal is to continue his education and eventually work as a physical therapist.

On Oct. 10, students at Canfield High School were given a chance to experience a different type of workout. In a partnership with CrossFit, physical education students at the school were able to interact with row machines as well as take part in four other activities. State standards include participating in regular activity, engaging in physical activity in and out of school and creating a personal plan for physical activity. With the assistance of CrossFit, Canfield High School students were able to get a feel for physical activity that doesn’t include what one might usually find in a traditional gym class in their own community. Speed Shop CrossFit is a local business on Boardman-Canfield Road. Pictured are CHS students participating in the CrossFit exercises.
