This timid little kitty is named Lestat. Lestat is a handsome gray/blue smoky guy at about 5-months-old. He will definitely need someone to work with him to get over being scared. He should be the only cat in the household, at least for awhile, but he does get along with other cats in the room so maybe one other cat would help him come out of his shell. He loves to play! Lestat’s identification number is A141087.

Murder mystery takes place at Boardman library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Boardman library hosted a murder mystery event on Sept. 29, called Murder in the Library: Pasta, Passion and Pistols. Jen Kuczek, a Poland librarian, worked for several months planning and organizing the event. More than 90 people attended the Boardman library to try and figure out who killed the main character, Pepe Roni, owner of La Speranza restaurant. “I think the excitement of the audience and the staff members who participate is my favorite

part,” said Kuczek. Out of the eight people who volunteered to play cast members, seven of them participated in the one last year. Six of the cast members are also staff members from the different library branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Kevin Clark, an administrator at CCCTC, and Rob Morris, a French and drama teacher at Valley Christian, were the only two who are not library faculty. The characters the volunteers portrayed were Marco Roni, Clair Voyant, Father Al Fredo, Mama Rosa, Rocco Scarfazzi,

Tara Misu, Bo Jalais and Angel Roni. The character names were all a play on words referencing Italian and French food and language. The audience members got to enjoy Italian cuisine, such as bread, pasta salad and a biscotti between scenes. At the end of program, the audience members used clues given to them throughout the program to guess which suspect was the one guilty of killing Pepe Roni. Three winners received a gift bag. The first place winner was the one who got the correct answer, the second place winner was the

one who came the next closest to being all correct and the third place winner was the one whose guess was furthest away from the correct answer. “I think they really enjoy it and their dedication is amazing. Having access to information they make costumes and have accents from what region they’re from. It’s just really fun,” said Kuczek about the volunteers. This is the second year Kuczek has organized a mystery at the library event and she hopes they continue to stay as popular as they are now. The next program is planned for Spring of 2017.

T he Boa rd ma n School s Fund For Educational Excellence awarded si x teacher mini-grants last school year. Two of them went to the music and art departments. Recently, several Foundation Board Members visited to see the progress students are making in the arts, thanks to the new equipment purchased from the foundation. The Orchestra Fa ll Pops Concert occurred on Oct. 19. The students were using the new audio/video system from the grant, to record and critique their performance.

“T he tech nolog y i mplemented has en ha nced t he Orchestra members’ listening skills to create a more powerful final performance,” said Joyce Mistovich, Foundation President. T he tota l g ra nt awarded to Orchestra Director Bill Amendol and Band Director Tom Ruggieri was $1,472 for this “Audio/Visual Infusion.” T he v isua l a r t s g ra nt, called “Google Classroom,” was awarded to high school a r t teacher A ma nda Bero. Students can access the demo on Chrome Books if they need to review it, and they can access it from home. Foundation member Edie Davidson was impressed by how the students could follow the art lesson so much easier. “W it h t he new tech nology, Ms. Bero demonstrated the shading concepts ‘live’ so students could see the techniques, larger than life,” Davidson said.

Oktoberfest celebrates 40th year By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Boardman Rotary Club hosted its 40th annual Oktoberfest at Boardman Park on Oct. 2. Thousands of people made their way to Boardman Park to celebrate Oktoberfest by exploring more than 150 vendors and eating food from 15 different food trucks. The event ran from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. with plenty of activities, vendors and performances to enjoy. The Rotary Club’s co-chairs Joe Ignazio and Ted Thornton, along with the other members of the Rotary Club, work tediously year after year to make the event a success.

“Everything we make here goes right back to the community. Not only for Boardman, but for Youngstown and North Lima,” said co-chair Joe Ignazio. The event is always offered on the fourth Sunday after Labor Day and is weather-driven; the nicer the weather, the more people who come out to attend. A children’s area with drums, cornhole, a bounce-a-round and arts and crafts is available for children of all ages to participate in. There were stations for face painting, pumpkin paintings and plenty of dogs to pet. Boardman Rotary Club has hosted Oktoberfest at Board-

man Park for all 40 years and plans on continuing to host the event there for future Oktoberfests. Admission is $3 for adults and children older than 12-years-old. There is free parking on-site and free parking offsite with a shuttle to take guests to Boardman Park. “The first time we had it, it was 1,000 people and now it’s crazy. We give back about $5060,000 a year and we don’t keep one penny of it,” said Ignazio. Oktoberfest is a long-standing tradition that attracts several people. It is the largest fundraiser for the Boardman Rotary Club to collect money and donate back to the community.

Local surgeon speaks at conference in Italy Dr. Lawrence A. DiDomenico, a podiatric foot and ankle surgeon and managing partner of Ankle & Foot Care Centers, was a speaker at two recent international medical conferences in Florence, Italy. DiDomenico presented a research summary poster in late September at the Fifth World Congress of the World Union of Healing Societies at Fortezza Da Baso in Florence. The poster summarized research that documented excellent healing rates for a set of diabetic wound care patients who underwent both wound care and surgical

reconstruction to correct deformities. The World Congress, offered every four years, drew 4,000 attendees from across the world, including vascular surgeons, podiatric surgeons, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, nurses and others. DiDomenico also spoke on Oct. 8 at an international conference hosted by the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine at Kent State’s Florence campus. He spoke on surgical reconstruction of the diabetic foot. The presentation was part of a three-day continuing education seminar for Italian

and American doctors. Ankle & Foot Care Centers is the region’s largest foot and ankle care provider, with podiatric foot and ankle surgeons serving patients at 20 local offices, located in Alliance, Andover, Austintown, Boardman (two offices), Campbell, Champion, Columbia na, Cornersburg, East Liverpool, East Palestine, Greenville, Liberty, Niles, Poland, Ravenna, Salem, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown. Specific locations and additional information are located on the group’s website at www. ankleandfootcare.com.
