The next regular meeting of the Poland Historical Society will take place on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection) in Poland Township. “Following the Fowlers from Connecticut to Poland to Canfield” will be the topic of the program at 7:30 p.m. The presentation will begin with the story of the original Jonathan Fowler family in Guilford, Connecticut and will trace Fowler’s move to Poland in 1799. The program will be presented by society members Dave Smith, Larry Baughman and Ted Heineman.

LESTAT
At Angels For Animals in Canfield, there is the beautiful Ella. Ella is a very dignified Tortie who was born on March 10, 2013. She came in to the shelter on Nov. 4, 2015. She was returned to Angels when the landlord changed hands and told her former owner that no cats were allowed. Her identification number is A088312. If you would like to meet Ella, stop by Angels For Animals to see her. She is very loving and gets along with the other cats in their room.
This timid little kitty is named Lestat. Lestat is a handsome gray/blue smoky guy at about 5-months-old. He will definitely need someone to work with him to get over being scared. He should be the only cat in the household, at least for awhile, but he does get along with other cats in the room so maybe one other cat would help him come out of his shell. He loves to play! Lestat’s identification number is A141087.

Third-grade students visit local fire station By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Third-grade students from Dobbins Elementary visited Fire Station 92 on Oct. 12. The students went on a walking field trip to visit the fire station to learn more about and explore the station. The tour started with the students getting a lesson in the large training classroom from Bill O’Hara, a fire education specialist. In the classroom, there were students selected to dress in official firefighter gear and in a smoke alarm costume. After their lesson the students had the opportunity to explore the trucks and different fire equipment. There was a special rescue engine they students got to see that was used at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. A blow-up firehouse was set up for the students to play in as well. Poland Township Trustee Joanne Wollet and Officer Steven Kent joined the students during their field trip. When the field trip came to an end, the students had walked away with more knowledge and hands on experience than before.

Valentina and Aurora mashed their potatoes during Sprout Club on Oct 13 at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
Children have smashing time at Sprout Club By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Ch i ld ren at tended t he monthly Sprout Club on Oct. 13 at Fellows Riverside Gardens. The theme of Sprout Club was potatoes and Lynn Zocolo, horticulture educator, taught the children about different kinds of potatoes and what they’re used for. The program started off with children coloring a picture of potatoes until everyone arrived and was ready to begin. Zocolo got the children engaged by passing around different kinds of pota-
toes for them to feel, smell and look at. “We are going to be mashing potatoes, doing some science experiences, food coloring. Things like what is a potato, how do you like to eat potatoes,” said Zocolo. After the children learned about the different types of potatoes and how they are grown, each child got their own potato to mash. When the potatoes were mashed, Zocolo and other volunteers warmed up the potatoes for the children to put in some milk and butter to make mashed potatoes to eat. There was food coloring
passed around for the children to make their potatoes change different colors, while still being edible. One la st t h i ng Zocolo showed the children was a science trick. She showed how she could put a straw into a raw potato. Zocolo walked around the room showing and allowing the children how the straw could go into the hard potato. At the end of the program, the children were able to take home their snack of potato chips and apple juice. The next Sprout Club group will be on Nov. 17 and will talk about plant teas.

Dogs participate in Pawtober Fest By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Every Dog Matters hosted a fall bake sale at Cobblestone Corner on Oct. 15 called Pawtober Fest. Every Dog Matters and Never Muzzled set up tables at Cobblestone Corner to sell items to raise money. All of the proceeds will go back to Every Dog Matters to help with the veterinary bills for the dogs, collars, food and whatever else they need. Every Dog Matters hosts several fundraising events during the year to help raise money for the dogs. This is the second event that has been hosted at Cobblestone Corner. Heather Davis, owner, is a big animal rescue person and was more than happy to
be the location for an event like this. “Everything was donated to the rescue and all the profits will go back to the dogs,” said Shirley Persinger, President of the Board. “We allow other people to bring their dogs as long as they’re friendly.” Whitehouse Farms provided complimentary apples to go with free dog treats and coffee for guests who attended. The pumpkins and baked goods for sale were donated and baked by people who supported Every Dog Matters. Never Muzzled has been around for two years and does fundraising to help backyard dogs. They provide treated lumber, straw, food and other items for dogs who are living outside

Both organizations are dedicated to helping dogs in need; whether it be to find a forever home or to help make their current living conditions a little bit better. There was a good turnout for the size of the event and the money raised helps a lot with veterinary expenses for the dogs. There were dogs there that were available for adoption, some people brought dogs they adopted from Every Dog Matters back to visit the members of the rescue and others brought their own dogs to enjoy the day while helping dogs in the rescue.

Cardinal Mooney elects new president In January 2017, Mark Oles will become the new President of Cardinal Mooney High School. Oles, a 2001 Mooney graduate, will join Mooney on Oct. 15., replacing Interim President and Board Chairman Dan Landers, who has led Mooney since July 15, when Rev. Gerald DeLucia left the presidency to return to pastoral work. Landers, a 1975 graduate of Cardinal Mooney, has been Chairman of the Mooney Board since 2014. He is a partner at Landers-Lewis Insurance. Oles has a long history of service to his parishes and to Cardinal Mooney High School. For his parishes, he has been a parishtransformation leader, financecouncil member, young-adultministry leader, special-parishreligious-education-for-people-
with-disabilities (SPRED) leader and an altar server. For Mooney, Oles created the Jamie Serich Memorial Scholarship, which distributed $94,000 since 2010 to benefit Cardinal Mooney and Lumen Christi students. He has financially supported multiple families by providing tuition assistance, was a speaker at a football playoff rally, maintained relationships with alumni across a broad spectrum of graduating years and was the organizer of the 10-year Class of 2001 reunion. “Ca rd i na l Mooney Hig h School is my passion,” Oles said. “It’s where I learned the most valuable lessons in my life. Sanctity, scholarship and discipline have been the pillars that gave me structure to succeed. I am very blessed to have this oppor-
tunity to return to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney.” Oles joins Cardinal Mooney from employment as Quality Assurance Manager for Union Tank Car Company’s repair business unit in Chicago. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer engineering from the Ohio State University, a Master of Management degree from Saint Joseph University and a Master of Science degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. When asked what his plans are as president of Cardinal Mooney, Oles said, “I plan to listen to the Bishop, Superintendent, parents, students and supporters of the Mooney family to gain a better understanding of where we are and where we need to grow.”
