Donation makes pet oxygen masks purchase possible Recently, the Vranches family of Canfield won $300 at a Mahoning Shenango Kennel Club event and decided to pay it forward by donating their winnings to the Cardinal Joint Fire District (CJFD) for the purchase of pet oxygen masks. Debbie Vranches contacted the CJFD Chief Donald Hutchison and asked if the District could use the money for pet oxygen masks and the chief explained it could since currently pet masks were available only on their first line engines. Chief Hutchison personally thanked Mrs. Vranches and her daughter, Erin, when they delivered their contribution, which will be used in rescuing pets. The Vranches are members of the Mahoning Shenango Kennel Club, which made the funds possible, www. mahoningshenangokennelclub. com.

Every Dog Matters hosted a fall bake sale at Cobblestone Corner on Oct. 15 called Pawtober Fest. Every Dog Matters and Never Muzzled set up tables at Cobblestone Corner to sell items to raise money. All of the proceeds will go back to Every Dog Matters to help with the veterinary bills for

the dogs, collars, food and whatever else they need. Every Dog Matters hosts several fundraising events during the year to help raise money for the dogs. This is the second event that has been hosted at Cobblestone Corner. Heather Davis, owner, is a big animal rescue person and was more than happy to be the location for an event like this. “Everything was donated to the rescue and all the profits will go back to the dogs,” said Shirley Persinger, President of the Board. “We allow other people to bring their dogs as long as they’re friendly.” Whitehouse Farms provided complimentary apples to go with free dog treats and coffee for guests who attended. The pumpkins and baked goods for sale were donated and baked by people who supported Every Dog Matters. Never Muzzled has been

around for two years and does fundraising to help backyard dogs. They provide treated lumber, straw, food and other items for dogs who are living outside all day and year-round. “We are a little bit different, we do community outreach,” said Linda Liguari, founder of Never Muzzled. Both organizations are dedicated to helping dogs in need; whether it be to find a forever home or to help make their current living conditions a little bit better. There was a good turnout for the size of the event and the money raised helps a lot with veterinary expenses for the dogs. There were dogs there that were available for adoption, some people brought dogs they adopted from Every Dog Matters back to visit the members of the rescue and others brought their own dogs to enjoy the day while helping dogs in the rescue.

To celebrate Fire Safety Week, students at Hilltop Elementary School received a visit from members of the Cardinal Joint Fire District on Oct. 12. The firemen educated the students about fire safety and presented fire safety tips to students by performing a Fire Safety Quiz Show for each grade level. A group of students were chosen from each class and Deput y Chief Matt Rarick asked the four teams questions ‘game show style’ and the students had to buzz in first to answer the questions. To help the younger students, a member of the Cardinal Joint Fire District joined each team.

Firefighter Derek Sullivan explained the truck’s equipment to the students and showed them the tools firefighters use when fighting fires. “You are welcome to stop out at our station anytime. We are always there, every single day of the year. We have our ladder truck here today, but we have all different kinds of trucks there you can check out,” Sullivan said. As part of the presentation, firefighter Dom Reinthaler gave the students a thrill when he climbed the fully extended ladder on the truck and waved to them from the very top of the ladder.

Rarick asked the students such questions as, “After leaving your house because of a fire, where do you go?” and “When you hear the smoke detector beep, what should you do?” After five rounds of questions, a winning class was declared, which received a special prize. All other students received helmets, stickers and coloring books compliments of the fire department. After the Fire Safety Quiz Show, the firefighters invited the children outside to check out the Fire Safety House and the ladder fire truck parked in back of the school. Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a pumpk in car v ing event on Oct. 13-15 to prepare for the Pumpkin Walk at Twilight. Families had the opportunity to carve pumpkins how-

ever they liked at Fellows Riverside Gardens. There were pumpkins carved with initials, names, animals, different faces and several other creative designs. The event was free for families and each person got their own pumpkin.

The staff at Fellows Riverside Gardens placed the pumpkins in front of the building leading to the gardens where multiple pumpkins were placed along pathways, the fountains and benches. The pumpkins lit the way for the Pumpkin Walk at Twilight the facility was pre-

paring for. People were able to come to the Gardens that Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. to pick a pumpkin and start carving. Several people who attended have made it a tradition and come ever y year with their

family and friends. The event is geared toward making it a family-oriented project. The Pumpkin Walk at Twilight will be hosted on Oct. 16 at Fellows Riverside Gardens and will provide live entertaining and other children’s activities.

Skate Zone offers STEM lessons Skate Zone Fun Center, which has been providing fun, safe and exciting experiences for children for years, has added a new dimension to their game: education. Skate Zone has combined science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with roller skating to help children learn and experience those concepts first hand. The STEM lesson programs are designed by experts from around the country, including PHD candidates and certified teachers, and uses enthusiastic and qualified educators to show that STEM is not only found in everyday experiences, but that it can be fun. The hands-on activities that relate roller skating to STEM capture the student’s attention and help to explain difficult-to-teach concepts. Since embarking on this STEM journey, Skate Zone has used their passion about the initiative to raise awareness on the growing need for STEM in the education of our youth. “We’re very excited to be able to offer the STEM field trips and we’re proud to be the exclusive licensee for Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Portage and Stark counties. Combining hands-on activity and fun has shown to be a jump start for learning and memory retention,” said Larry Maynard, Skate Zone owner. Skate Zone is offering these STEM field trips to elementary and middle schools across a five-county area in northeast Ohio. For more information, visit Skate Zone’s website at www. skatezonefun.com.
