Pioneer Trails Tree Farm, Covelli and Union work together for troops By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Poland Union Elementary and Covelli Enterprises worked with Pioneer Tails Tree Farm for Operation Evergreen on Nov. 10. Operation Evergreen is an initiative to bring Christmas trees to soldiers currently serving in another country. The school hosted two events to help Pioneer Trails Tree Farm with their initiative. The school asked the students to bring in spare change. They collected the change as a donation to Pioneer Trails Tree Farm. They funded $429. Covelli Enterprises worked with
the school in their endeavor and matched the donation. The farm received $828 in total for Operation Evergreen. Mary Jan Perdulla, owner of Pioneer Tails Tree Farm, said the project “is a way to send Christmas cheer to troops overseas.“ They have been involved with Operation Evergreen since 1996. They will send 173 trees overseas this year. She sends the trees to Reynoldsburg for inspection, and the trees go from there to Kuwait, where they will be distributed. UPS ships the trees. The cost of shipping for the project is quite high, so Perdulla appreciates the help she has received from the
school and Covelli Enterprises. The school also painted ornaments for the troops throughout the day. The students received a bulb during their art class and finger painted on the ornament. The school’s PTO helped the students and provided some art supplies. The PTO organizes monthly art projects for the students. Once a month, volunteers in the class come in and lead an art class that the whole school w i l l pa r t icipate i n. About 60 PTO members came this month to help organized the project. Along with the bulb, the students also made a “thank you”
card on a tag that attached to the bulb. The children wrote “thank you” on one side of the tag and chose to write either “hero,“ “brave“ or “strong“ on the other side. The school used the activity as a way to honor the troops currently in the military. The students also honored their choir teacher, Dana Veneskey, who served in the military by making cards that thanked her for her service. Poland Union Elementary has teamed up with Pioneer Tails Tree Farm for many years in the past. Principal Michael Masucci has worked with the farm for Operation Evergreen for 10 years.

Children learn to build and program robots at the Poland library by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Poland library hosted a Lego WeDo Robots event in the large meeting room on Oct. 17. Samantha Schneider, Early Learning Team Leader for the PLYMC, led the event with assistance from Poland librarian Annette Ahrens. They organized the children into groups. The groups worked in a collaborative effort to create their machines. The activity had the children build the robots around a motor based on diagrams and program the machines to move. The program worked the students’ critical thinking, prob-
lem solving and computational skills. After getting their robots to move, the children attached a link that connected their machine to a Lego rectangle to carry cargo. The groups placed different blocks on the rectangle to see how many they could carry. They changed elements in their programming to try to make the machines carry more and still move at a fast pace. Some groups tried to carry all the blocks while others removed their carrying device altogether. One group replaced the tires from the instructions with other tires in the Lego WeDo box, making their machines move
faster. The groups all experimented with what they had. Some programmed their machines to move in other directions other than straight. One group made it so the robot changed directions whenever someone stepped in front of it. Some changed the colors of the light on the robot. Two groups raced each other and then tried to figure out ways they could be faster than the other group. The library hosts different Lego WeDo programs throughout the branches of the PLYMC. The grade level of the program depends on which program the library offers.
Neighbors | Zack Shively
The children, from left, Lily, Anthony and Christina, changed different things on their robot to make it work properly. Part of the objective of the Lego WeDo Robots event is to get the childen to troubleshoot and think critically about what they are doing.

Poland library has Halloween story time and games by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Poland library hosted a Halloween Costume Ball for young children on Oct. 14 complete with stories, games and snacks. Librarian Amanda Koller had the children sit on the floor for story time to begin the event in
Poland’s large meeting room. The children dressed up in Halloween costumes for the event. She read two books with a Halloween theme. One of the books, Nick Sharratt’s lift-theflap book “What’s in the Witch’s Kitchen,” included a rhyme scheme and clever flap design. Each page had two flaps in the same space, asking the reader

to choose one direction. Each had a good choice and bad choice. Koller asked the children which way they wanted the flap to lift. The group played games after the stories. First, they played bingo for small prizes. Next, the children took part in the game “four pictures.“ Koller placed four pictures on the four pillars
in the room. The children chose one pillar to stand by. Koller pulled corresponding pictures out of a bag. Those standing by the pillar of the picture she picked lost. A f ter t he ga mes, Kol ler opened the event up for children to play other games, make a craft or eat a snack. The children could play a ring toss
game or a beanbag toss. Both had a Halloween style to them; the children tossed rings on an octopus or witch’s hat. They threw the beanbags into a plastic pumpkin. They made a puffy ghost craft using cotton balls, glue and a ghost outline. The children glued the cotton balls onto the paper to make the puffy ghost.
