Celebrate Short Fiction Day Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. To reserve a space or for more info, contact Courtyard Square at 804-513-8027 or lisacahill@mac.com. Checks are to be made out to CI Ohio LTD and authors will be responsible for their own sales. More information is available online at http://tinyurl.com/CSFDay2016.

Carlozzi annual funds drive Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Monetary

Speece presented benefits of therapy horses

Dawn Speece, owner of Focus Hippotherapy, spoke to the Rotary Club of Austintown about the unique character of her program to help autistic, developmentally delayed, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, spinal cord injury children with their therapy by using horses. Speece, a veteran of 20 years in this non-profit field, explained the value of horses as a calming, gentle, and reassuring approach because of the matching of the animal’s back to the pelvis of the children and adults needing movement and muscle release or tension. Speece, native of Berlin Center, runs the operation on her Duck Creek Road location, and welcomes volunteers of all ages, including the YSU Football Team who are tall and strong enough to help mature clients. Speece may be reached at 330-507-7424 or by email at focushippotherapy@gmail.com. Nick Santucci, representing the Regional Chamber of Commerce, spoke to Austintown Rotarians about the new role the Chamber is undertaking to help match employers with potential employees. He cited problems with drug testing and poor interviews and resume skills as issues separating the two groups, and pledged the support of the Chamber to help improve interview abilities of new workers, using a grant from the State of Ohio to do this. Santucci mentioned that the Regional Chamber is the third largest in the state. A child dressed as a Lego Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle went trick or treating in the woods during Boardman Park’s Boo thru the Woods event on Oct. 16.

Twenty-six local businesses set up tables along the path in the woods to pass out candy and other treats to the children. The event was free for participants. The only thing that people would pay for was food from the concessions. There were also other activities that guests could participate in during the Boo thru the Woods event. Pumpkins were available to carve for the Great Pumpkin Carve-Out contest. A bounce house and other familyfriendly activities were also offered. “This is a growing event. This is the biggest one we’ve had,” said Boardman Park recreation director Karen McCallum. Boo thru the Woods is a weather-driven event and with the sunshine and warm weather, many people spent the day outside collecting treats and spending time together. Children and adults dressed up in a variety of costumes. There were animals, cartoon characters and several others. Boardman Park hosts several Halloween events for families throughout the month of October. More information on the different activities at the park can be found at www.BoardmanPark.com.

Divorce support group to meet Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish will offer a DivorceCare support group beginning on Nov. 28 and extending for 12 consecutive weeks to those in the regional community who are going through or have gone through a recent separation or divorce. The classes will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Room 207, in the school building. Divorce is a common experience in our culture, but no matter how common it is, those who experience it often feel blindsided, relieved, confused, hopeful, beat down, angry and devastated, among other negative feelings. It is a strange mix of emotions that occur, but it is normal. DivorceCare is a comprehensive program for those ex-

periencing, or who have experienced, separation and/or divorce. Participants will receive expert advice, opportunities to hear from others who are experiencing the same thing and materials to use at home to help them integrate what they learn into everyday life. DivorceCare addresses the emotional, physical, relational and spiritual aspects of divorce in a way that respects where you are on the divorce journey. Each session has two distinct elements: a video seminar with experts and a support group with focus. To register, visit http://www. ihm-parish.com/divorce-support.html. For more information on the DivorceCare Program, contact Jim Merhaut at 330-793-9988 or visit http://www.ihm- parish. com/divorce-support.html.

There were 10 races shown throughout the night for people to bet on.

All of the money raised by the end of the night will be split up between both organizations. “This is a big fundraiser for both of us. We get people who follow both groups or who help out with groups come out with their friends and family,” said Erin Yale, a member of Legacy Dog Rescue.
