Celebrate Short Fiction Day Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. To reserve a space or for more info, contact Courtyard Square at 804-513-8027 or lisacahill@mac.com. Checks are to be made out to CI Ohio LTD and authors will be responsible for their own sales. More information is available online at http:// tinyurl.com/CSFDay2016.

Boardman library welcomed special guest Joe Sullivan also known as Jocko the Clown to perform a show on Oct. 18. Families attended the event to watch Jocko the Clown perform several different magic tricks. The theme of his show was “reading is magic,” and incorporated how people can utilize the library and all of the services they offer. The show started out with Jocko introducing himself and explaining how he got into magic. “When I was very, very young my mom took me to the library and we found a book on how to be a circus clown,” said Sullivan. Sullivan said every time he
would go back to the library to show the librarian how he has become more and more like a clown, there would be a new book for him to check out and learn other tips and tricks. Sullivan relied heavily on books and a lot of practice to make sure that he would become the best clown he could be. Jocko the Clown incorporated a lot of interaction with the audience and brought up children and adults to help him with some of his tricks. He showed the audience how he made his own wooden puppet then had three children come up from and make other wooden puppets dance as he played music. At the end of the show, each Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci child was able to pick out a special balloon hat Sullivan made Jocko the Clown brought up members from the audience to help him make to wear and take back home his puppets dance while he played music during his show on Oct. 18 at the Boardman library. with them.

Boardman High School Students waited in lines, checked in at registration tables and cast their votes on Election Day, just like the real event. The mock election was organized by AP Government teacher Brian Racz and carried out completely by his AP Government students. Voting took place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Election Day, and included about 1,300 Boardman High School students. The sample ballot was in line with what Boardman voters actually received at the polls: the presidential race as well as local candidates and issues were represented. Pictured are Boardman AP Government students organizing the mock election.

Pumpkins surrounded the gazebo at Fellows Riverside Gardens to light up the path for the Pumpkin Walk at Twilight.
Families carve a pumpkin path By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a pumpkin carving event on Oct. 13-15 to prepare for the Pumpkin Walk at Twilight. Families had the opportunity to carve pumpkins however they liked at Fellows Riverside Gardens. There were pumpkins carved with initials, names, animals, different faces and several other creative designs. The event was free for families and each person got their own pumpkin. The staff at Fellows Riverside Gardens placed the pumpkins in front of the building leading to the gardens where multiple
pumpkins were placed along pathways, the fountains and benches. The pumpkins lit the way for the Pumpkin Walk at Twilight the facility was preparing for. People were able to come to the Gardens that Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. to pick a pumpkin and start carving. Several people who attended have made it a tradition and come every year with their family and friends. The event is geared toward making it a family-oriented project. The Pumpkin Walk at Twilight will be hosted on Oct. 16 at Fellows Riverside Gardens and will provide live entertaining and other children’s activities.

Hundreds of people went to Boardman Park on Oct. 14, 15 and 16 to carve pumpkins for the annual Great Pumpkin Carve-Out contest. Pumpkin-carvers showed up with their families and friends to carve the perfect pumpkin. The event was created more than 30 years ago and has grown to become bigger each year. More than 400 pumpkins are carved each year. The event is weather-driven and the nicer the weather, the more people attend. Families have turned this event into a tradition they attend each year. Aside from pumpkin carving, families
could roast s’mores and hot dogs over a fire, enjoy food from food trucks, a rock wall and a bounce-a-round. Boardman Park buys the pumpkins from a local grower and allows a guest to pick out a pumpkin for a small donation. During the judging on Sunday, there would be an award for each age group. After the carve-out, families could enjoy a ride on the Haunted Family Hayrides on Oct. 14 and 15 or go trick-ortreating during the Boo Thru the Woods event on Oct. 16. Several activities take place at Boardman Park throughout the month of October to celebrate Halloween and providing family-friendly activities to participate in.

Hitchcock Woods introduces Tiny Two’s toddler room By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Hitchcock Woods Early Learning Center recently introduced its new toddler classroom, called “Tiny Two’s,” for students who are 16 months to 2-years-old. Pattie Welsh, owner of Hitchcock Woods Early Learning Center, has had a goal of expanding the younger toddler room
for more than three years. She knows the quality of education is important at a young age and continues to strive for achievement. “After seeing the success of the older toddler room, ages 2-2 1/2, I am very excited to create and develop a program for the Tiny Two’s,” said Welsh. The students who are placed in the “Tiny Two’s” room will
work on social emotion and language and listening skills. They have their own playground to play on. The special outside area allows the students to ride tricycles and participate in other outdoor activities with their teacher Shannon Gutierrez. The students currently enjoy going for walks in the bye-bye
buggy and finger painting different pictures. There are several sensory items placed in the classroom for students to touch and look at to help them explore their five senses. Hands-on activities are created for the students to engage with. The “Tiny Two’s” room will allow the students to have an easi-
er transition to the older toddler room from the infant room. The room has a friendly-monster theme that keeps the classroom fun and colorful. Welsh and the facult y at Hitchcock Woods Early Learning Center hope to keep creating new ideas for making the center a better place for their students.
