Hundreds of people attended the Austintown Middle School annual craft show hosted by the PTA on Nov. 12. There were exactly 150 vendors who set up tables at the 33rd annual event. This is the one and only fundraiser the PTA does for Austintown Middle School and one of the biggest fundraisers in the Austintown

City School district. “This is our one big fundraiser here at AMS which is amazing, it’s huge,” said PTA president Lynn Mickey. Aside from vendors, there was a concession stand, 50/50 tickets and a Chinese auction. Student volunteers from National Honor Society spent their afternoon helping with concessions, serving the vendors complimentary breakfast. PTA chairmen Kelly Con-

MCCTC hosts robotics tournament On Oct. 22, Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted 40 VEX Robotics teams ranging from middle to high school who travelled from three states: Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. MCCTC had five teams represent the school in the competition. The event took place in the Struthers High School Fieldhouse. VEX Robotics, presented by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, is a student-driven robotics program. Students work in teams to design, build and program

robots to compete against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Competitions are fast paced and give the students opportunities to test their classroom-learned STEM concepts. Teams compete five or six times in qualification rounds to determine seed positions for the elimination rounds, which advance teams to the state tournament. The VEX Robotics program has competitions for elementary, middle and high school levels. “Students who participate in competitive robotics learn im-

portant life skills like teamwork, communication and projectbased organization in addition to lessons in programs and problem solving,” said Engineering Instructor, Walter Baber. Tournaments take place at the regional, state and national levels and teams compete in multiple tournaments in an effort to win a spot at VEX Worlds, offered each year in April. MCCTC is taking their five teams to compete at Perry High School in November and then on to Firestone High School and Kalahari to compete in December.

Dairy Queen pumpkin hunt brings in hundreds By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Cornersburg Dairy Queen hosted its annual pumpkin hunt on Oct. 29. The Dairy Queen has hosted the pumpkin hunt for about 10 years. Hundreds of people attend the event each year, dressed in costumes and ready to participate in the activities. Children, ages 2-9, were invited to participate in a pumpkin hunt,

get a picture taken with Curly the Cone, decorate a cupcake and other activities. The children who came dressed in a costume were able to enter in a costume contest. There were several costume contest winners and each winner received different prizes. “We do a free fall photo with kids in costumes that they can pick up any time after Wednesday. They’ll get a free photo with Curly the Cone and the blizzard

inflatable,” said Dairy Queen owner Christine Smith. The children were divided into two age groups for the pumpkin hunt. Children ages 2-5 went first and then children ages 6-9 searched in the straw area for mini pumpkins, candy and a golden spoon. Those who found a golden spoon received a free royal blizzard. Children had the opportunity to color a pumpkin that they could take home or leave at Dairy

Queen to be put on display at the store. Everyone who attended got a coupon for a free ice cream cone as a treat for coming to the event. The pumpkin hunt gives the community an opportunity to celebrate fall and Halloween while participating in fun activities. Winter athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

Limitless Dance gives everyone a chance to dance By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Torrie Trella, of Torrie’s Academy of Dance, has opened a new, non-profit organization called Limitless Dance Company as a way for people with disabilities to have the opportunity to learn different styles of dance. Limitless Dance is the only dance company in the Mahoning Valley to offer dance classes to children and adults with disabilities. “I come in each week and I teach either a new line dance or a different style just to give them a little taste of everything they do,” said Paul Miletta. Miletta teaches a hip-hip class that has two students who attend regularly, Viktor Slipski and Dante Graziani, to learn some dance moves. “He [Viktor] really likes to dance, he watches videos at home and he’ll practice until he knows all the steps,” said Gerry Slipski, Viktor’s mom. There are several classes offered teaching different styles of dance for the children and adults to participate in and learn a variety of dance steps. The classes give the students an opportunity to come in and express themselves in a way that isn’t normally offered in a school environment.

Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci

Viktor Slipski learned dance moves from instructor Paul Miletta during his hip-hop class at Limitless Dance Company on Nov. 9.

“It’s nice for socialization and he feels good about himself after he comes,” said Gerry Slipski. The small class sizes allow for the students to warm up to each other and start to feel comfortable with themselves. As more students attend classes, it’s a gradual addition and the original students don’t get overwhelmed with having so many other dancers in the same studio.

“It’s a safe environment for the child, for them to come in and be themselves. They don’t get judged. I tell them all the time to have fun with it and show me their own style,” said Miletta. There are currently about 10 students who attend classes at Limitless and Trella and Miletta are anticipating more to join as other activities come to an end. The first class is offered for free so those who wish to attend can

get an idea of what they like. More information can be found at w w w.torriesacademyofdance.com/limitlessdance-company or by emailing LimitlessDance2016@hotmail. com. Donations to help with classes are being accepted on a GoFundMe Page and the studio is also hosting a basket raffle through Dec. 17 for people to purchase tickets for.
