Mock elections prepare students for the future By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Glenwood Junior High students prepared to cast their ballots on Nov. 1 during their own mock election. Seventh- and eighth-grade students took time from their history classes to take part in voting for student council and the next United States President. The students prepared for the mock election by learning about the two presidential candidates in class and listening to speeches from the students running for student council. “I think it’s fun to prepare for the future and for what we are going to do when we get older,” said eighth-grader Elizabeth Amstutz. This isn’t the first time Glenwood Junior High has hosted mock elections. Every four years the students vote for the presidential candidates, but this was the first time the ballots contained the names for the student council nominees. “The thing that makes this See ELECTION, Page 4

Former First Lieutenant Ernie Stadvec, a member of the Ohio Western Reserve Chapter, was the guest speaker at a recent luncheon meeting of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. Stadvec, a veteran pilot of World War II and the Korean War, has extensively researched the mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart over the Pacific as she attempted to circumnavigate the world. Stedvec’s presentation suggests that there is some recent documented evidence that Earhart landed safely on the island of Saipan but later died at the hands of the Japanese. Halloween fun without the sugar By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The fifth annual Trick Nor Treat event took place on Oct. 21 at Beyond Expectations Speech Therapy. Andrea Moore, owner of Beyond Expectations, created the event because her son has food allergies and noticed how difficult Halloween can be for food allergies. “We try to make it as much fun as we can without the candy,” said Moore. The Trick Nor Treat event gives children with food allergies and special diets an opportunity to
go trick or treating for Halloween items that are not candy. The children could participate in pumpkin painting, crafts and visit the Bunnies in Baskets. The event was free and open to anyone who would like to celebrate Halloween trick or treating in a unique and fun way. The Bunnies in Baskets are therapy rabbits from F5RSA Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies, & Feathered Friends Rescue and Sanctuary - that visit organizations all around the Mahoning Valley. The guests at the Trick nor Treat event could pet the rabbits and get pictures with them. The rabbits were dressed in Halloween
costumes, just like the children, and have attended the event for all five years the event has been occurring. There was a raffle for different baskets that guests could win. The tickets were the only thing that had a cost and the money raised from the raffle baskets would be put toward the Speech Therapy Scholarship Fund. The fund is used for any clients in need of assistance to help them out. “So far it’s been great, it seems like it’s growing each year as word of mouth spreads. I have had a good response from it,” said Moore.

New Day Recovery, a new detox center on U.S. Route 224, will celebrate its grand opening on Oct. 31. The 16-bed facility at 960 Boardman-Canfield Road offers patients a five- to sevenday detoxification program for opioids, benzodiazepine and alcohol. New Day officials say the center is a response to the area’s opioid-addiction epidemic, which is killing people at record rates and filling treatment centers to capacity. “We’re just trying to fill a need. A nd t here’s a lot of passion i n t h is,” sa id Executive Director Kimberlee DiPillo. “For the last eight years, we’ve been in the drug-testing business. ... That evolved into the opiate-treatment business,” said CEO Tom Ivany. “It really exposed a huge need here. Clients were coming to us on a daily basis.” Part of New Day’s focus is on getting patients into longer-term treatment after completing the detox process, which staff members say is crucial to recovering from addiction. “This is step one. This is just the very, very beginning of the recovery process,” said program director Nicolette

The fourth-grade teachers and aides dressed up as graduates and the Cat in the Hat to celebrate Halloween at Robinwood Lane Elementary School on Oct. 28.
Robinwood students parade around with Halloween spirit By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Students at Robinwood Lane Elementary School celebrated Halloween on Oct. 28 with a parade and classroom parties. The teachers and students arrived at school in their Halloween costumes preparing to end
the school week with Halloween-filled activities. Throughout the day, the students participated in different Halloween-themed activities and schoolwork. Toward the end of the day, the students participated in a parade, which brought in a big crowd of families to watch. The students

walked with their classes and teachers around the building twice, giving the students an opportunity to show off their costumes to the guests who came to watch. Some students dressed in partner costumes, some had simple costumes and others had extravagant costumes.
When the students finished their parade around the building, they went back to the classrooms to end the day with Halloween treats. Students brought in cookies, cupcakes and other items to share with their classmates. Many of the parents came to the classrooms after the parade to help with the par-
ties and passing out treats. Students and faculty members both enjoy incorporating holidays into their schoolwork. Many students said Halloween is something they look forward to each year to celebrate in school because they can dress up in costumes and get into the Halloween spirit.

Limitless Dance gives everyone a chance to dance By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Tor r ie Trel la, of Tor r ie’s Academy of Dance, has opened a new, non-profit organization called Limitless Dance Company as a way for people with disabilities to have the opportunity to learn different styles of dance. Limitless Dance is the only dance company in the Mahoning Valley to offer dance classes to children and adults with disabilities. “I come in each week and I teach either a new line dance or a different style just to give them a little taste of everything they do,” said Paul Miletta. Miletta teaches a hip-hip class that has two students who attend regularly, Viktor Slipski and Dante Graziani, to learn some dance moves. “He [Viktor] really likes to dance, he watches videos at home and he’ll practice until he knows all the steps,” said Gerry Slipski, Viktor’s mom. There are several classes offered teaching different styles of dance for the children and adults to participate in and learn a variety of dance steps. The classes give the students an opportunity to come in and express themselves in a way that isn’t normally offered in a school environment. “It’s nice for socialization
and he feels good about himself after he comes,” said Gerry Slipski. The small class sizes allow for the students to warm up to each other and start to feel comfortable with themselves. As more students attend classes, it’s a gradual addition and the origina l students don’t get overwhelmed with having so many other dancers in the same studio. “It’s a safe environment for the child, for them to come in and be themselves. They don’t get judged. I tell them all the time to have fun with it and show me their own style,” said Miletta. There are currently about 10 students who attend classes at Limitless and Trella and Miletta are anticipating more to join as other activities come to an end. The first class is offered for free so those who wish to attend can get an idea of what they like. More information can be found at w w w.torriesacademyofdance.com/limitlessdance-company or by emaili ng L i m it lessDa nc e2016 @ hotmail.com. Donations to help with classes are being accepted on a GoFundMe Page and the studio is also hosting a basket raffle through Dec. 17 for people to purchase tickets for.
