CVMS has mock presidential election BY ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Ca n f ield V i l lage M idd le School partnered with the Mahoning County Board of Elections to have a mock presidential election on Oct. 28 During the election, students in grades five through eight had the opportunity to cast their ballot for Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump and running mate Mike Pence; Democratic nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton and running mate Tim Kaine; Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson and running mate William Weld or Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein and running mate Ajamu Baraka. An actual voting precinct was set up in a classroom where students had to sign in, fill out their ballot in a voting booth and then feed the ballot into an electronic voting machine. The eight voting booths and two electronic voting machines were provided by the Mahoning County Board of Elections to show the stu-
dents the actual process, as well as determine the winner. CVMS Social Studies teachers Mike Kerensky and Jason Jugenheimer worked with the Board of Elections to organize the election. “The staff at the Board of Elections are true public servants. They went above and beyond here today. They brought their own ballots and are having the kids sign in just like a real precinct. They are giving the kids the full voting experience. I especially want to thank Director Joyce Kale-Pesta, who set the whole thing up. I would also like to thank Naseeb Kaleel of the Board of Elections, who is actually a former student of mine, for helping us out today, too,” Kerensky said. Kerensky said he wanted his students to choose their candidate on the issues, not just what they see on television. “I went to the candidates’ websites and printed off their views on the issues. Then I deleted the candidates’ names and had the students look at the issues and

would vote for one candidate or another,” Kerensky said. After the students voted, they received a pencil and voting sticker, courtesy of the Mahoning County Board of Elections. The results of the election were expected to be announced at the end of the school day.

Horse race bids help dogs in need By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
L egac y Dog Resc ue a nd Friends of Fido partnered to host the fourth annual Night at the Races fundraising event on Oct. 22 at the Saxon Club. The ability to name a horse was sold ahead of the time for people to buy for $10. There was also a betting window for people to place bets on whichever horse they wanted for $2 and could collect their money if they won. There were 10 races shown throughout the night for people to bet on. All of the money raised by the end of the night will be split up between both organizations. “This is a big fundraiser for
both of us. We get people who follow both groups or who help out with groups come out with their friends and family,” said Erin Yale, a member of Legacy Dog Rescue. A Chinese auction, a lottery ticket board, concessions and products from both organizations were available for purchase to help raise more money for Legacy Dog Rescue and Friends of Fido. Many of the Chinese auction baskets were donated by businesses, and the food and baked goods were donated or made by members of the groups or friends and family members. County dog warden Dianne Fry attended the fundraiser and spoke about the new dog
pound. A new dog pound is in the making to provide better space and commodities for the dogs. They hope to open the new pound in the summer of 2017. “This is a big deal for the community to do this and for the commissioners to approve this,” said Fry. The partnerships that organizations like Legacy Dog Rescue and Friends of Fido form with the dog pounds and other organizations provides a greater opportunity for dogs to become adopted and find a home. Friends of Fido will be celebrating their fifth anniversary on Nov. 12 during their fundraiser at Davidson’s.

We want to build their skill sets. A guest clinician might have a different way of teaching or explaining something, and it will just click with a student and he or she will just get it. That’s why I have guest artists in my classes. My way of teaching may be different from theirs and they can share theirs with my students and help them learn, ” Even said. scales, pausing to work with students individually. “Fundamentals may seem boring, but they are very important to get even better,” Even told the students. Even also uses her clinics as a recruitment tool. “The clinics I do at middle schools and high schools, and at the college level, also serve as a recruitment tool. I invited all the students here to Saxophone Day at Kent State University in November. It’s a day full of clinics and demonstrations which the students can attend and enjoy,” Even said. Even brought some professional equipment for the stu-
dents to try, on behalf of reed, mouthpiece and ligature manufacturer Vandoren. “I brought some samples to introduce to the students so the could see what is available to them. Many are not using professional mouthpieces. I want them to realize equipment does matter,” Even said. Even said a guest clinician also helps the band director. “As a guest clinician, I can also give band directors ideas to work on with their students,” Even said. Even is a Cleveland-based saxophonist dedicated to sparking deeper interest in the arts of today through the perfor-
mance of contemporary music. Her chamber ensembles, Ogni Suono and Patchwork, regularly commission composers, work with student composers and provide community outreach. Ogni Suono’s album, “Invisible Seams,” features some of the duo’s first collaborations. Supported by a grant from New Music USA in 2015, the duo launched SaxoVoce, a long-term project exploring the wide-ranging ways of synthesizing saxophone and voice. Patchwork’s recent performances include Warner Concert Series at Kenyon College, Frequency Series at Constellation in Chicago and Omaha Under the Radar.

Halloween fundraiser helps shelter cats By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
West Side Cats hosted a Halloween Spook-tacular fundraising event at Austintown Park on Oct. 21. West Side Cats started in 2008 and is a non-profit, nokill cat shelter and is one of the only no-kill shelters in the area. They host several fundraisers throughout the year to help the cats inside the shelter with the different veterinary bills and
check ups that are needed before a cat gets adopted. “Usually we have a game night ever y year where we have board games. This year we didn’t do the game night, which we usually do in the early part of the year. We decided to bump it to October instead and do a Halloween event,” said Kimm Koocher, founder of West Side Cats. Tickets were sold prior to and during the event for entry. The tickets were $5 and included
entry, food and an entry for a giant raffle basket. There were games and pumpkins to paint for the children to participate in. Food was sold, as well as tickets for raffle baskets to help raise money for the shelter. Nick Carano brought his bird, Ouija, for families to hold and pet. Ouija is a therapy bird and goes on trips to mostly nursing hopes with Carano to visit residents. “He’s 2 5 -ye a r s-old nex t month and I’ve been visiting
nursing homes for 19 years now, I’ve had him 19 years,” said Carano. West Side Cats always welcomes volunteers and they have their own website and Facebook page for guests to visit and get more information on the shelter. “We do everything we can to save them [the shelter cats] because we figure somebody will adopt them and take them into their home,” said Jane Polish, co-director of the shelter.

Limitless Dance gives everyone a chance to dance By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Tor r ie Trel la, of Tor r ie’s Academy of Da nce, ha s opened a new, non-profit organization called Limitless Dance Company as a way for people w it h disabi lit ies to have the opportunity to learn different styles of dance. Limitless Dance is the only dance compa ny in t he Ma honing Valley to offer dance classes to children and adults with disabilities. “I come in each week and I teach either a new line dance or a different style just to give them a little taste of ever ything they do,” said Paul Miletta. Miletta teaches a hip-hip class that has two students who attend regularly, Viktor Slipski and Dante Graziani, to learn some dance moves. “He [Viktor] really likes to dance, he watches videos at home and he’ll practice until he knows all the steps,” said Gerry Slipski, Viktor’s mom. There are several classes offered teaching different styles of dance for the children and adults to participate in and learn a variety of dance steps. The classes give the students an opportunity to come in and express themselves in a way that isn’t normally offered in a school environment.
“It’s nice for socialization and he feels good about himself after he comes,” said Gerry Slipski. The small class sizes allow for the students to warm up to each other and start to feel comfortable with themselves. As more students attend classes, it’s a gradual addition and t he origina l students don’t get overwhelmed with having so many other dancers in the same studio. “It’s a safe environment for the child, for them to come in and be themselves. They don’t get judged. I tell them all the time to have fun with it and show me their own style,” said Miletta. There are currently about 10 students who attend classes at Limitless and Trella and Miletta are anticipating more to join as other activities come to an end. The first class is offered for free so those who wish to attend can get an idea of what they like. More information can be found at w w w.torriesacademyofdance.com/limitlessdance-company or by emaili ng L i m it le s sDa nc e2016 @ hotmail.com. Donations to help with classes are being accepted on a GoFundMe Page and the studio is also hosting a basket raffle through Dec. 17 for people to purchase tickets for.
