Holiday Shop fundraiser brings success By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Union PTO hosted its 13th annual Holiday Shop at Poland Seminary High School on Nov. 5. The Holiday Shop consists of a craft show and bake sale along with concessions, a 50/50 and basket raffles all to help raise funds. The proceeds received are what helps fund the activities the students at Poland Union participate in. The shop is the biggest fundraiser of the year. “Last year we raised almost $20,000 and we are hoping to raise about that this year,” said Michelle Ray, chair of the Holiday Shop. The event expands ever y year and has moved from being hosted at Poland Union to Poland Seminary High School due to size. The planning is almost a year-long process and starts within a month after that year’s shop is finished. The PTO accepts vendors from all around and many of the vendors find out about the shop from word of mouth. There are local vendors who sell their

Inn at Poland Way and they donated two scooters as a prize for the raffles. Hundreds of people show up to the Holiday Shop to help support Poland Union, as well as getting their holiday shopping
done. “It’s a fun fundraiser because the whole community gets involved. It’s not just parents giving money to the school, it’s a community event. It brings more people together,” said Ray.

Fundraiser helps shelter cats By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
West Side Cats hosted a Halloween Spook-tacular fundraising event at Austintown Park on Oct. 21. West Side Cats started in 2008 and is a non-profit, no-kill cat shelter and is one of the only nokill shelters in the area. They host several fundraisers throughout the year to help the cats inside the shelter with the different veterinary bills and check ups that are needed before a cat gets adopted. “Usually we have a game night every year where we have board
games. This year we didn’t do the game night, which we usually do in the early part of the year. We decided to bump it to October instead and do a Halloween event,” said Kimm Koocher, founder of West Side Cats. Tickets were sold prior to and during the event for entry. The tickets were $5 and included entry, food and an entry for a giant raffle basket. There were games and pumpkins to paint for the children to participate in. Food was sold, as well as tickets for raffle baskets to help raise money for the shelter. Nick Carano brought his bird, Ouija, for families to hold and
pet. Ouija is a therapy bird and goes on trips to mostly nursing hopes with Carano to visit residents. “He’s 25-years-old next month and I’ve been visiting nursing homes for 19 years now, I’ve had him 19 years,” said Carano. West Side Cats always welcomes volunteers and they have their own website and Facebook page for guests to visit and get more information on the shelter. “We do everything we can to save them [the shelter cats] because we figure somebody will adopt them and take them into their home,” said Jane Polish, codirector of the shelter.

Halloween parade brings attention to Red Ribbon Week By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Students from Poland Union and Dobbins Elementary arrived at Poland Seminary High School in their Halloween costumes on Oct. 28 ready to parade around the field. The students were divided into their classes and each class walked around the football field showing off their costumes to the family members and friends who came to watch. As the classes walked around, there was a camera set up recording the students and projecting them onto the scoreboard allowing all of the guests to see the students and their costumes up-close. Parents lined up against the fences to get pictures of their children that have been looking forward to the parade since they were told about it. Several of the parents said their children couldn’t stop talking about the
parade and how excited they were to walk around with their friends in a costume. PTO members volunteered to help make the parade a success. There were hundreds of students who walked along the field with the help from PTO members and teachers. The parade was a “Boo to Drugs” parade in honor of Red Ribbon Week coming to an end. Both schools participated in Red Ribbon Week and each day did something different to bring attention to the drug prevention program. As students walked around the field, videos the students created about Red Ribbon Week played on the scoreboard for the guests to watch and see what the students were involved in during the week. Children get treats in Halloween program By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland library hosted a Halloween Howls event on Oct. 25 for children to attend and get into the Halloween spirit. Amanda Kollar, youth librarian, created the program for children to come in their costumes and play different Halloween-themed games. Most of
the children who came to the event came dressed up in a costume eager to participate. The program started out with the children creating their own ghost out of a paper plate, crepe paper, glue and crayons. After most of the children arrived, Kollar played the story on tape “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything,” before the children played some
games. When the story was over, the children played Halloween Bingo and the winners, along with the other children, could pick out a prize. The next game the children played was similar to a musical chairs game. The children picked a Halloween picture to stand by in the library and if Kollar pulled out the picture the child was standing by,
they were out. The game was played until one child was left and they were the winner. The children were then able to go on their own and finish their ghost craft, play a witch hat ring toss or play a bean bag pumpkin toss game until it was time to go home. Limitless Dance gives everyone a chance to dance By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Torrie Trella, of Torrie’s Academy of Dance, has opened a new, non-profit organization called Limitless Dance Company as a way for people with disabilities to have the opportunity to learn different styles of dance. Limitless Dance is the only dance company in the Mahoning Valley to offer dance classes to children and adults with disabilities. “I come in each week and I teach either a new line dance or a different style just to give them a little taste of everything they do,” said Paul Miletta. Miletta teaches a hip-hip class that has two students who attend regularly, Viktor Slipski and Dante Graziani, to learn some dance moves. “He [Viktor] really likes to dance, he watches videos at home and he’ll practice until he knows all the steps,” said Gerry Slipski, Viktor’s mom. There are several classes offered teaching different styles of dance for the children and adults to participate in and learn a variety of dance steps. The classes give the students an opportunity to come in and express themselves in a way that isn’t normally offered in a school environment. “It’s nice for socialization and he feels good about himself after he comes,” said Gerry Slipski.
Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci
Viktor Slipski learned dance moves from instructor Paul Miletta during his hip-hop class at Limitless Dance Company on Nov. 9.
The small class sizes allow for the students to warm up to each other and start to feel comfortable with themselves. As more students attend classes, it’s a gradual addition and the original students don’t get overwhelmed with having so many other dancers in the same studio. “It’s a safe environment for the child, for them to come in and
be themselves. They don’t get judged. I tell them all the time to have fun with it and show me their own style,” said Miletta. There are currently about 10 students who attend classes at Limitless and Trella and Miletta are anticipating more to join as other activities come to an end. The first class is offered for free so those who wish to attend can get an idea of what they like.
More information can be found at w w w.torriesacademyofdance.com/limitlessdance-company or by emailing LimitlessDance2016@hotmail. com. Donations to help with classes are being accepted on a GoFundMe Page and the studio is also hosting a basket raffle through Dec. 17 for people to purchase tickets for.
