Family events ease holiday stress By Natalie Wright Neighbors Editor
The holiday season is just around the corner and before you know it, the kids will be out of school. I think we all remember what it was like when those first few days of winter break struck - the excitement of the upcoming holiday festivities, the thrill of being out of school for nearly two whole weeks! As parents, grandparents or caregivers in general, the surplus of energy that this anticipation can bring often causes stress and headaches that even a good dose of holiday cheer can’t completely cure. Luckily, there are more than a few activities around the area that can entertain the whole family or just the young ones on their own. Mill Creek Parks is offering holiday family fun throughout the month. One event that Neighbors has our eyes on is Holiday Nature Crafts on Dec. 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Pioneer Pavilion. Please note that this event is for children ages 7 and up only, and does include a fee of $7 for residents and $10 for nonresidents. If you are planning on attending, you must register and pay at Ford Nature Center by Dec. 15. Throughout the month, Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Winter Celebration: The Forest. The gardens will be staying open late on Saturdays and Sundays for the Electric Garden - a festive holiday display that fills the gardens with thousands of lights. The branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will also offer some
g reat hol iday prog r a m s, i ncluding a Holiday Movie Matinee at the Austintown branch on Dec. 19 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The movie will be rated PG WRIGHT or G and the entire family is invited to attend. Children under 7-years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The Austintown library will also be the location of the Noon Year’s Eve Party on Dec. 30 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to attend this event, which will feature music, dancing, a story, crafts, light refreshments and a ball drop. Several locations throughout the area will also host holiday light displays throughout December. This list is solely made of displays in the Neighbors areas and more locations may be added at a later time. Locations include: • “Austintown Christmas” at 3810 Dunbar Street in Austintown • “Winter Wonderland” at 3946 Montereale Dr. in Canfield • “Canfield Christmas Lights” at 333 Fairview Ave. in Canfield • “The Boyd Family Christmas Display” at 5515 West Boulevard in Boardman • “Holidays with the Hughes” at 7433 Ranier Trail in Boardman • “Boardman Park Holiday Lights” at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman More information on these and other events can be found online at www.libraryvisit.org and www. millcreekmetroparks.org.

Poland Union Elementary School helps send Christmas trees overseas
By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Union Elementary School has been creating ornaments to raise money for the Ohio Christmas Tree Association. Pioneer Trails Tree Farm visited Poland Union on Nov. 20 to receive a check to help fund Operation Evergreen, which sends Christmas trees to troops overseas. As part of Union’s “Give Back” program, students brought in spare change on two Fridays in October to donate to Operation Evergreen. Students also created ornaments to send overseas for the troops to decorate their trees. The students donated approximately 500 ornaments. Ashlee Mauti, the marketing and public relations director at Covelli Enterprises, attended the presentation with Jessica Morris, a Canfield Panera Bread manager, and Mary Jan Perdulla, a representative from Pioneer Trails Tree Farm. The check was presented by four Poland Union students: Cassie Blanch, Lilly Trolio, Matthew Beard and Parker Ogden. As the four students presented the check to Perdulla, the rest of the attendees applauded loudly. “The PTO and the kids sponsored the give back program. All

Local author shares own story By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Twice a year the Poland libra r y hosts a loca l aut hor event. On Dec. 3, the library welcomed local authors, musicians and artists to attend. Although the turnout was not quite what development director, Deborah Liptak, had hoped, one author was eager to share her stor y. Patricia Galbreath, author of “Merry Mouse Church Mouse, was thankful to be part of the local author event. Galbreath has two children’s stories out - “Merr y Mouse
in our Father’s House and “Merry Mouse: Christmas in our Father’s House. Her stories revolve around a church mouse that tries to spread the knowledge of faith to children. She spoke about how her life growing up has made a big impact on her stories and the desire to become an author. About 12-15 yea rs ago is when Galbreath said the idea was “God-inspired. She never went to college and was a stay at home mother caring for her family. Writing began when her pastor asked her if she would be interested in writing the church newslet-

Poland librarian, Annette Ahrens, leads the Bonding with Babies and Books storytime with her own teddy bear on Nov. 25.
Books bring babies together
By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland library hosted the Bonding with Babies and Books storytime on Nov. 25. There was a large turnout of babies and their caregivers making for an extra energetic storytime. Poland children librarian, Annette Ahrens, led the babies through a storytime filled with a lot of animal stories and activities. She started off storytime with the book “3 Little Kittens,” by Paul Galdone. Ahrens used a teddy bear
to act like her own child as the caregivers helped their children with the different activities. The teddy bear was a big hit especially with one of the little girls. Several songs were sang, but what the children seemed to get the most excited about was the scarf song. The scarves were waved through the air by the children while a song was being sang. The brightly colored scarves attracted the attention of the children before they were even passed out. “Sm i le Pout-Pout Fi sh,” by Deborah Diesen and “The
Wheels on the Bus,” by Annie Kubler, were the last books read. When the stories were finished, Ahrens brought out two boxes full of toys for the children to play with. When the boxes were opened, the children rushed to pick out their favorite toy. Bonding with Babies and Books is hosted by the Poland library and other Mahoning County libraries throughout the year. Sometimes the storytime is accompanied with a theme in anticipation for a holiday, while others are centered around other favorite books and activities.

Zocolo is the horticulture educator at Mill Creek Metroparks and leads different programs for all ages. She also teaches master garden classes and vegetable programs. “To see the wonder in their eyes makes it worth it,” said Zocolo of teaching the children’s programs. She went on to say that learning about fruits, vegetables and gardening as a child is something new and when the children see and hear the different things, it is exciting to them, and to Zocolo.
When the children arrived, they had two coloring sheets with gourds on them to color while they waited for the class to start. Once the class started, Zocolo and Alice talked about various gourds and passed them around to the children. To finish the class, Zocolo gave the children an egg gourd and stencils to paint a dragonfly on them. The children were allowed to take home the gourds they painted to be a ornament for their home. “It’s just a pure pleasure to connect people with plants. That’s what we like to do here at the Gardens, connect people,” said Zocolo.
