Fitch students listen to speech from Gold Star Mom By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
A u s t i nt ow n F it c h H i g h School’s 33rd Veterans Day Assembly brought together students, veterans, faculty and other Austintown community members on Nov. 11. Chris Wortman, a Gold Star Mom, spoke to the crowd about her duty as a “Gold Star Mother” with three children enlisted in the military and one who was
killed in action. Sgt. Robert Carr, Wortman’s son and Champion High School graduate, was killed in action by an explosive device on March 13, 2007, while on patrol in Al Dora, Baghdad, Iraq. Carr received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and several other medals and badges. Wortman says she now dedi-
cates her life to serving and speaking about veterans. “He always was my hero and now he’s everyone’s hero,” said Wortman. Wortman was given a plaque and a key to the township made after her speech by the Austintown trustees. Hearing the story about Wortman and her children, especially Carr, had a major impact on the students. The students
have a respect for military and having speakers like this allows them to stay connected. “Get up, show courage and do something by simply saying ‘Thank you for serving’,” Fitch principal Chris Berni told the students. Before the junior and senior students left the assembly, they walked up to a veteran who they did not know, shook their hand and thanked them for their service.

Dogsmartz Unleashed had its open house for the new Poland location on Nov. 12 which also was a kick-off for the Youngstown Pet Food Drive. Jenny Falvey, owner of Dogsmartz Unleased, has had more than 25 years of experience working with dogs. The facility is a full training facility including obedience training, puppy classes and behavior work. The training is positive training creating a positive experience for the dogs. “We welcome every dog. We never turn a dog away,” said
Falvey. People who attended the open house were welcome to bring their own dogs to check out the facility. Those who came were asked to bring a pet food item or any other pet necessity to donate to the Youngstown Pet Food Drive officially starting Nov. 15. Adoptable dogs from Legacy Dog Rescue were at the open house for guests and their dogs to play with. “We are trying to beat all the other RescueMe Ohio places; Cleveland, Toledo, Akron and Columbus,” said Kate Monroe, organizer of the food drive.

Cardinal Mooney students celebrate their win on and off the field by holding a check for the total amount raised by both schools for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.
Rival schools come together for good cause On Oct. 21, Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St,, and Ursuline High School, located at 750 Wick Ave., both of Youngstown, had a unique fundraiser to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley revolving around their
big rival football game at YSU’s Stambaugh Stadium. On the week of game day, Principals Mark Vollmer (Cardinal Mooney) and Matt Sammartino (Ursuline) were “arrested” and kept until they “made bail.” The Youngstown Police, how-

ever, graciously allowed the principals out on “work release” so that they could guide their schools through their respective celebrations. On the morning of the game, social media blasts, emails and calls to parents notified the schools’ communities that they could text pledges to ACHMV by texting RIVALS to 91999 to raise their principal’s bail. The school that pledged the most money by kickoff released their principal first. The schools banded together to raise more than $4,100 dollars for the cause. Cardinal Mooney raised the most money and Vollmer was bailed out first on the midfield at halftime, where a check for the total amount raised by both schools was presented to ACHMV.

On Oct. 23, the Austintown Optimist Club had its annual Pumpkin Carving at the Austintown Township Park. This activity is done in conjunction with Girl Scout Troop 80899 from Austintown. This is the 16th year that Troop 80899 has participated with the Austintown Optimists. While the Austintown Optimist Club furnished around 200 pumpkins, the girls from Troop 80899, their families and the troop leaders carve approximately 100 pumpkins while the other pumpkins are decorated. Afterward, the participants celebrate with cider and donuts. Leaders Tricia Doyle and Barbara Bott co-ordinate with the troop members and their parents to deliver the pumpkins to local nursing homes for the viewing enjoyment of the residents during the Halloween season. The Austintown Optimists were pleased to work with the Girl Scouts on this project which benefits the troop’s desire to do community service and allows area nursing home residents to enjoy the decorations.

More than 100 high school students from 15 area high schools were present to exchange ideas, meet new friends and learn the many ways to expand their world through Interact, Rotaract for college age and Rotary for adults. Also in attendance were exchange students from various countries, both inbound and outbound, speakers about RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award), scholarship programs, service projects and health interests. Tom Baringer of Struthers and Gina Dermotta of Salem were coordinators for the event at the Salem Community Center. Austintown schools implement new grading system By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Aust intow n Cit y Schools have introduced a new grading and report card system for the kindergarten through fifthgrade classes. The standards-based grading system became introduced as part of the Falcon 2020 vision team planning and the guidance of the district leadership team. Students in thirdand fourth-grade have already experienced standards-based grading, so the fifth-grade stu-
dents are the only ones new to the system. Instead of receiving a letter grade on their assignments, students will receive feedback with the SBG system making it easier for them to understand what they need to work on for future homework or tests. Studies have shown that traditional grading methods don’t give students feedback so they are unaware of what they should work on when preparing for the next assignment. The students are more focused on how
to receive a higher letter grade, not how to understand the material more thoroughly when receiving a letter grade. Rather than having a traditional honor roll, Austintown Intermediate School teachers will honor and recognize the students for their performance at the end of the school year. Austintown City School District is hoping the standardsbased grading system will help students become more confident with their learning.
