Mobile Mania takes over CHS By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The presidential election was not the only election on the minds of Canfield High School students, faculty, staff and parents. The school’s annual Mobile Mania took place on Nov. 2, in the physics lab, with more than 1,000 votes cast for the mobiles. Mobile Mania is the third of eight events for senior students in physics teacher Stephen Hlaudy’s Physics Olympics. “Students must build a mobile that freely hangs from the ceiling and has both translational and rotational equilibrium. That’s a fancy physics way of saying it is balanced,” Hlaudy said.
The mobile entries must have a recognizable theme and proof page illustrating the mathematic quality of work. They also must have three rods and five objects which are balanced. The mobiles receive votes in the following categories: prettiest mobile, ugliest mobile, best balanced mobile, funniest mobile, most creative theme and Best of Show. The event is participated in by two physics classes with 50 students divided into 18 teams. According to Hlaudy, the physics students look forward to the event and it has become a Canfield High School tradition. “The kids really look forward to this. They ask me about it at beginning of the school year to make sure we are still going
to do it. It started as a lab more than 20 years ago and I have watched it grow considerably over the years, and it has now become a CHS tradition. This is the 22nd year. The students go all out, trying to earn enough votes to win the event,” Hlaudy said. Senior physics students Samantha Carney, Ava Dasari and Maura Kennedy all agreed the event is fun, and it’s a lot of work, but in the end it’s all worth it. And they all hope to win. “It’s a lot of hard work, but the end result is worth it,” said Dasari, who with her group created a Just Dance interactive mobile. Carney’s group also created an interactive mobile with Snapchat filters.
“Making a mobile is a lot of work and can be frustrating at times, but it’s really fun and nice to see it hanging when it’s all done,” Carney said. Kennedy said to see her “Up” mobile actually hanging in the lab is very cool. “We wanted to catch people’s attention by adding balloons to the mobile, just like the balloons on the house in the movie “Up.” Making a mobile is fun, but can be a little frustrating, but to see it hanging here today is very cool,” Kennedy said. Hlaudy said the event is fun for the students, but they also learn a lot from the experience. “This is something the kids actually do. They are not just hearing about it or writing about it or listening to me talk about it. They can actually feel it. This is the most popular event of the Physics Olympics. The one the kids are most excited about,” Hlaudy said. The winners are not only awarded with bragging rights, but they also get their names added to the physics classroom wall, joining winners from years past. Neighbors | Abby Slanker

VEX Robotics, presented by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, is a student-driven robotics program. Students work in teams to design, build and program robots to compete against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Competitions are fast paced and give the students opportunities to test their classroom-learned STEM concepts.

Teams compete five or six times in qualification rounds to determine seed positions for the elimination rounds, which advance teams to the state tournament. The VEX Robotics program has competitions for elementary, middle and high school levels. “Students who participate in competitive robotics learn important life skills like teamwork, communication and project-based organization in addition to lessons in programs and problem solving,” said Engineering Instructor, Walter Neighbors | Submitted Baber. Pumpkin hunt brings in hundreds By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Cornersburg Dairy Queen hosted its annual pumpkin hunt on Oct. 29. The Dairy Queen has hosted the pumpkin hunt for about 10 years. Hundreds of people attend the event each year, dressed in costumes and ready to participate in the activities. Children, ages 2-9, were invited to participate in a pumpkin hunt, get a picture taken with Curly the Cone, decorate a cupcake and other activities. The children who came dressed in a costume were able to enter in a costume contest. There were several costume contest winners and each winner received different prizes. “We do a free fall photo with kids in costumes that they can pick up any time after Wednesday. They’ll get a free photo with Curly the Cone and the blizzard inflatable,” said Dairy Queen owner Christine Smith. The children were divided into two age groups for the pumpkin hunt. Children ages 2-5 went first and then children ages 6-9 searched in the straw area for mini pumpkins, candy and a golden spoon. Those who found a golden spoon received a free royal blizzard. Children had the opportunity to color a pumpkin that they could take home or leave at Dairy Queen to be put on display at the store. Everyone who attended got

CUMC has three Christmas Eve services Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad St. in Canfield, is offering three Christmas Eve services and a special breakfast and informal worship gathering on Christmas Day. The services will be led by senior minister Rev. Susan Brown with assistance from Rev. Beth McGuire, associate minister and lay volunteers offering music, reading and other forms of participation. Each Christmas Eve service is unique but all include the tradi-
tional Christmas story, carols, communion and candlelight: • With a focus on scripture, prayer and a Christmas message, the 1:30 p.m. worship service is perfect for those who do not like to drive after dark, or who are heading out of town for Christmas. • The 6 p.m. worship service is geared to families and children and includes the children’s choir and a special message for children along with an inspirational Christmas reflection.
• A traditional worship service is planned at 9 p.m. that includes special instrumental and vocal music and a message of hope. On Christmas Day, a free, hot breakfast will be offered beginning at 8:30 a.m. with an informal worship service to follow at 9:30 a.m. in the church’s Atrium hall. Junior League members that teamed up together for this event were Heather Elder, Debra Hartig, Anna Masi and Kim Urig. Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world, encompassing more than 150,000 women in the 291 Leagues in four countries. Art students make creative carvings By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Students in the Canfield High School Art Club put their artistic pumpkin carving skills to the test during Creative Carving on Oct. 27. The club met in the art room with CHS art teacher and club advisor Kate Antal to let their creative juices flow. We are doing artist apron painting soon, we are having a T-shirt design contest and we have Greg Moring, the YSU Art Department chair coming to speak to our students about careers in art. In December, we are also partnering with Ashley Circle Nursing Home in Austintown to start an art pals program, which is like pen pals. We are going to send them art which they can display there and they are going to send us art which we can display here,” Antal said. According to Antal, all art students are welcome to join the club. “The Art Club is where students can come and have fun and create extra art - more art than they do in the classroom. The students will also have
