Poland library trains wizards on potion making By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Wizards in training gathered at the Poland library on Nov. 10 to learn how to make potions during the Hogwarts Potions Class. Librarian Jen Kuczek organized a night full of Harry Potter fun and activities for teens to participate in. There were bottles set along a table labeled with different ingredients that go into magical potions. The class started off with the wizards-in-training picking what Harry Potter House they belong in. After everyone was divided into Houses, they created notebooks to take notes about how to make the different potions in. There was a table lined with snacks based off the Harry Potter movies the students could eat. Pretzel rods with frosting and sprinkles were transformed into magical wands and cups with food coloring mixed with lemon-lime soda were fortunetelling drinks. The potion class started after the snacks were finished. Kuczek used science and simple household ingredients to create potions that had a reaction. When the class was over, the guests were officially trained wizards.

Cardinal Mooney students celebrate their win on and off the field by holding a check for the total amount raised by both schools for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Rival schools come together for good cause On Oct. 21, Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St,, and Ursuline High School, located at 750 Wick Ave., both of Youngstown, had a unique fundraiser to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley revolving around their big rival football game at YSU’s Stambaugh Stadium. On the week of game day, Principals Mark Vollmer (Cardinal Mooney) and Matt Sammartino (Ursuline) were “arrested” and kept until they “made bail.” The Youngstown Police, however, graciously allowed the principals out on “work release” so that they cou ld g uide t heir schools through their respective celebrations. On the morning of the game, social media blasts, emails and calls to parents notified the schools’ communities that they

Holy Family Youth Ministry members Stephen Babik, MyMy and Zaire Fabian, along with Jim Stickel and Marnie Kelty, DRE/YM, took part in the Diocesan Youth Convention at St. Michael the Archangel in Canton on Nov. 6. The theme was “Mercy Begins with Me.” The convention included Keynote Speaker Ben Walther, a Q&A session with Bishop Murry and a variety of workshops and interactive service opportunities. The convention concluded with the Celebration of the Mass presided by The Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown. During the Mass, the youth were privileged to be witness to the installation of five seminarians as Lectors and Acolytes. Also, during the Mass, Holy Family’s MyMy and Zaire Fabian were honored by being asked to be part of the Offertory Procession, and Stephen Babik represented Holy Family by presenting DYC pins to Bishop Murry to be blessed. Pictured are MyMy and Zaire Fabian, Stephen Babik, Marnie Kelty and Jim Stickel posing for a picture in front of the Diocesan Youth Convention banner with it’s theme Mercy Begins with Me.

Trunk or treat provides safe and free fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland United Methodist Church had children and adults dressed in costumes lined up in the parking lot ready to trunk or treat during the annual event on Oct. 30. More than 50 church members and other organizations decorated the trunks of their cars to get into the Halloween spirit. Some people decorated their cars in specific themes, while others used items like cobwebs, pumpkins and ghosts. Options for children with food allergies were passed out by some of the church members. After people went trunk or treating, they could pick out a small pumpkin to take home and get some hot chocolate, a hot dog and popcorn. “The reason we do trunk or treat is to give the kids a safe place to trick or treat,” said Becca Simon, Christian Education Director. The event brought in more than 200 guests last year and PUMC was expecting an even larger turnout this year. The church members were asked to bring one bag of candy and when they ran out, the church had extra bags to hand out. “We are trying to make it as free and as fun as possible. We’ve had over 150 people so far,” said Simon. Trunk or treat gives an opportunity for the community to spend time together while participating in fall fun. Poland United Methodist Church likes to host events around the holidays as a chance for families and friends to celebrate together.
