T h e P u b l i c L i br a r y of Youngstown and Mahoning County received a grant of $20,765 for coordinated learning spaces at two places, the library and partner organization OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. “Sparks! Ignition Grants” are funded by The Institute of Museum and Library Services. The local grant, “Youngstown Ohio Learning Opportunities” or YOLO, will promote two relatively new lab spaces for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Participants will interact with hands-on activities and technology in a lab space opening in the Main library, located at 305 Wick Ave., in January, and with designated exhibits at OH WOW!. Through the YOLO grant, stackable badges will be developed to track the progress
of participants as they move between the library and OH WOW! for learning. “The purpose of this project is to evaluate if learning is increased when two organizations offer opportunities for tiered learning experiences,” said Josephine Nolfi, Director of Programming and Youth Service, about the partnership between the Library and OH WOW! “This grant aims to bring children into both the library and OH WOW! for a learning process that builds on itself as kids experience topics from multiple perspectives at two locations.” “As an example of the tiered learning experience,” Nolfi continued, “kids can visit OH WOW! and play a piece of music on a PVC pipe organ. They can continue that experience at the library, where they can compose and edit an original
piece of music using software. These activities can earn them a Music badge.” Once the library’s learning space opens in January, children can take part in handson activities such as using a Makey, Makey with water controls to play video games, discovering how a 3D printer creates an airplane, learning about aerodynamics with a remote-controlled toy drone, making movies with animation, working with online Lego building, writing a mad-lib weather forecast, which can then be presented at the greenscreen exhibit at OH WOW! and more. “OH WOW! is excited to be involved with this project. We believe its results will offer important insights for future efforts,” Suzanne Barbati, President and Executive Director of OH WOW!, said.

Christmas with the Grinch By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Austintown library hosted a Grinch Who-liday event on Dec. 5. The event offered food, movies and various activities. Ashley Potopovich led the event with help from a Poland librarian, Jennifer. Grinch dust was available for the children to take home. This dust was for them to sprinkle in their grass to help keep the Grinch away from their homes and to prevent him from stealing their Christmas celebration. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was the movie played for the children to watch as they participated in all of the various activities set out for them, including reindeer toss in which children threw hoops in an effort to get them onto the reindeer antlers. The children had the opportunity to create their own Grinch masks to wear. They also made a “sugar Christmas tree” out of ice cream cones, frosting and other candies. Then when the children and their families got hungry, a table was set up with different drinks and snacks. The Grinch himself made a special appearance at the Who-liday event. This allowed the children to dress up and use different props to get a picture with him. The Austintown library hosts various holiday events and children programs for the families to enjoy. The library provides a location where friends and families can get together for a fun and educational experience.

A u s t i nt o w n-F i t c h H i g h School hosted a Sandy Hook Promise event on Nov. 18 in which some of the Sandy Hook P rom ise fou ndat ion tea m members put on a presentation to spread awareness to the general public. The foundation team members visited Austintown Middle School earlier that day to put on the presentation for the students there as well. Superintendent Vince Colaluca mentioned there were around 1,300 students that participated during the assembly. Paula Fynboh, the national field director of the Sandy Hook Promise, started out the program by explaining what the
Sandy Hook Promise was. She saisd that there are four programs inside of the Sandy Hook Promise: Mental Health First Aid, Say Something, Start With Hello and Safety Assessment and Intervention. The focus of the assembly was the Start With Hello program. Andre Elliott and Alex Smith joined Fynboh in explaining what the Start With Hello program was. Elliott and Smith went through a PowerPoint presentation which outlined three main steps. The first step was to see someone isolated, the second was to reach out and connect and the third was start with hello. Throughout the presentation, multiple ice breakers were introduced as a way to show how one person can connect
with another. One ice breaker demonstrated was the “where have your shoes been?” During the demonstration, one person asked the other what places they have been and what places they would like to go. Some students also asked why they enjoyed those places. “This is not a program in my eyes, this is a culture, a change,” said Elliott. Smith and Elliott shared their own experiences with bullying and feeling like they don’t fit in with a certain crowd. “The Start With Hello program is the key,” said Smith. Smith went on to say that connecting as a community and helping spread the word will make society one step closer to becoming welcoming and not isolating others.

Holiday crafts become holiday gifts By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Every month the Austintown library hosts a two-day event called Stamping with Cindy. This month the event took place on Nov. 20 and 23. Austintown librarian Cindy Mawhinney displayed some of the crafts she had previously created on her own and from other classes. There was a table with her crafts that the participants could look at and use for inspiration. The class this month consisted of the participants making a hot chocolate packet holder and a holiday card.
Mawhinney allows 10 people to attend each class. So many people register for the class that a wait list had to be created. If one person decides they are not attending anymore, the library will call the first person on the wait list to see if they would like to fill in their place. Mawhinney also teaches the Stamping with Cindy class at the Tri-Lakes library to give more people an opportunity to attend the class. The class is very popular because it is a great way to make crafts that can be turned into gifts or decorations for themselves or for others. “We usually make a card and
a 3D item during the class,” said Mawhinney. The holiday card and hot chocolate packet holder were t hemed for t he upcom i ng Christmas season. Every month Mawhinney provides supplies for a different project, mainly consisting of items to create a card and 3D holder. The participants help each other out with their projects by sharing different ideas and show ing how t hey created something. The hour and a half class allows plenty of time for the participants to get to know one another and enjoy company while working on a fun craft.

Participants rise to the occasion to bake bread By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens invited Sara Scudier to teach a class about bread making on Nov. 21. Several guests attended the event and went home with a fresh loaf of homemade bread. Scudier gave printed out instructions to the participants to help guide them through the bread making process. She demonstrated step by step and answered any questions along the way. The participants started by measuring ingredients, mixing everything together, kneading the dough, putting it into molds and then baking it into bread. The entire process took about fours hours, but Scudier said if there was more available time, she would have used it. The more time someone puts into making bread, the better the final product turns out.
Some of the participants had made their own bread before, but others had never made it. Those who made bread before told the others about their experiences and different techniques that they have tried. There are many different recipes used to bake bread and not one recipe is the same as another. Many people were worried that their bread would not turn out right, but Scudier made sure to help everyone. She told them it might not turn out perfect, especially if it was their first time making bread. “This bread’s not going to have a ton of flavor, but it’s going to taste better than WonderBread,” said Scudier. “This is basic bread, play with it. In November, The Rotary Club of Youngstown donated four Little Free Libraries and placed them throughout the city. Little Free Libraries can be found downtown at the SOAP GA L L ERY, located at 117S Champion Street; on the city’s south side within the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Youngstown, located at 2105 Oakhill Avenue; on the north side within Wick Park, located at 260 Park Ave.; and on the city’s east side at the Kathrine Hawks Haney Give the Children a Chance Inc. pavilion on South Truesdale, Little Free Libraries are “take a book, return a book” gathering places where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories with no library card and no due dates. They are a way to give free books to children and adults. The basic principle behind Little Free Libraries is “To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generations.” Communities are also encouraged to decorate or embellish their Little Free Library, providing a “canvas” for public art in the neighborhoods. Little Free Libraries have become a community movement across the United States and throughout the world, offering free books housed in small containers to members of the local community. All 50 states and 40 countries worldwide have been involved in the literary program. There are more than 22,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide. An estimated 1,670,000 books have been donated and borrowed from 20102015. All registered libraries can be found on the world map at http://littlefreelibrary.org. The Rota r y Club of Youngstown and community partners have installed a total of eight Little Free Libraries to date and plan to build and install an additional 26 in the Youngstown-Mahoning Valley area.

Sprout club creates gourd ornaments By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children gathered at Fellows Riverside Gardens to attend the monthly Sprout Club meeting on Nov. 19, led by Lynn Zocolo. The Sprout Club happens once a month and is organized into a series of three months, The next series will be December, January and February. This month’s meeting was all about gourds. The children were able to look at and feel different types of gourds and then paint their own at the end of the lesson. Alice, the volunteer at this meeting, knew all about gourds and brought in many of the ones
she decorated and transformed into different objects. She had one that was shaped to look like a cat, a snowman, an apple and several with different faces. Zocolo is the horticulture educator at Mill Creek Metroparks and leads different programs for all ages. She also teaches master garden classes and vegetable programs. “To see the wonder in their eyes makes it worth it,” said Zocolo of teaching the children’s programs. She went on to say that learning about fruits, vegetables and gardening as a child is something new and when the children see and hear the different things, it is exciting to them, and to Zocolo.
When the children arrived, they had two coloring sheets with gourds on them to color while they waited for the class to start. Once the class started, Zocolo and Alice talked about various gourds and passed them around to the children. To finish the class, Zocolo gave the children an egg gourd and stencils to paint a dragonfly on them. The children were allowed to take home the gourds they painted to be a ornament for their home. “It’s just a pure pleasure to connect people with plants. That’s what we like to do here at the Gardens, connect people,” said Zocolo.
