Students from Austintown Elementary School got a surprise visit from Soles of Luv and received a pair of shoes, some socks and a colorful drawstring backpack on Nov. 16. Twelve students were selected by staff members at AES to received a backpack of new footwear. The program is completely confidential and only Soles of

Soles of Luv brought up to 25 students shoes, socks and a backpack each visit. “We get people to sponsor a child. We provide them with the name, the age and the size and then they provide them with new shoes and a package of socks,” said Soles of Luv founder Cathy Crawford. Soles of Luv is an all volun-

teer organizations and receives the shoes that are donated from sponsors around the community. Several schools are visited by Soles of Luv throughout the school year and select students will get new shoes. Kelley Mills, AES counselor, is already working on a list of another 25 children who will be getting new shoes and socks. “My favorite part is the smiles I see on the children’s faces when they receive their new
shoes. Something to small to us as adults is such a huge impact on them,” said Mills. Everything earned is given to the children. Most of the shoes that the children get are athletic shoes, but some children get more dress shoes or little boot shoes. Veteran pilot Stadvec researched Earhart Neighbors | Submitted
Former First Lieutenant Ernie Stadvec, a member of the Ohio Western Reserve Chapter MOAA, was the guest speaker at a recent luncheon meeting of the Mahoning and Shenango Valley’s Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. Stadvec, a veteran pilot of WWII and the Korean War, has extensively researched the mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart over the Pacific as she attempted to circumnavigate the world. Stadvec’s presentation suggests that there is some recent documented evidence that Earhart landed safely on the island of Saipan but later died at the hands of the Japanese. This presentation is also on Stadvec’s web site www.erniestv.com/videos/ameliaearhart.

Fitch Choir Director Bill Klein and the Women’s Chorus 1 class checked out the new stage lighting for the first time.
Fitch auditorium sees first phase of renovation The Austintown Fitch Auditorium underwent the first phase of a dramatic renovation. The goal of the renovation was to enhance the facility, which is utilized by both the schools and community. Gina Cardillo, a teacher and the General Manager of Austintown Community Television, was a part of the committee that planned the renovation. “The changes to our facility are a physical representation of our entire school community’s purpose, which is to provide a vehicle for performance and a gathering place for various organizations,” she said. Cardillo credits a large group of people with the makeover, and says it was “truly a team effort.” The renovation committee includes: Phill Jaminet (Phillip J. Jaminet Engineering), Tracie Kaglic (Olsavsky Jaminet Architects, Inc.), Michael Johnston (Tri-Area Electric), Dan Rebraca (Carpet Tech), Mal Culp (Head of Maintenance for the school district), Tom Ventresco (IT for the school district), Dave Laurie and Steve Diana (school maintenance workers), Dan Johnson (Technical Manager, Austintown Community Television), Carla Amann (Fitch Auditorium Manager) and Cardillo. Cardillo expressed her excitement about the modernized lighting system for the school
music and drama programs, as well as for every day meetings and assemblies. She expressed her appreciation for Phill Jaminet and Tracie Kaglic, who generously donated their time and energy to the project, as well as her own school family. “Everyone from our school maintenance and IT departments to the ACTV staff and custodians worked tirelessly to complete this project. We can’t wait for everyone to see the changes we’ve made,” she said. Carla Amann, Auditorium Manager, echoed this sentiment. “I can’t wait to see all that we can do with the new lighting
for our musical and drama performances. Being able to modernize this for the kids is very exciting,” she said. Although most of the changes in phase one were aesthetic, such as new carpet and a sound booth, it’s the new lighting that was the focus. Additionally, the facility will get a new coat of paint over Christmas break this year. A new sound system is the goal of phase two which is slated to begin next summer. The annual Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 11 was the first event set to take place in the auditorium since the renovation.

Moms and sons share super knight together By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Super mothers and sons came to the Lariccia Family Community center on Nov. 10 to flaunt their superpowers and enjoy dinner, snacks and crafts. Karen McCallum, recreation director, worked hard to put the fifth annual event together. The sons dressed up as their favorite superhero and some of the mothers dressed to match their sons. The night began with a super supper and some crafts before moving into the next room to take part in a six station Superhero Training Course.
The t wo-night event was sold out both nights with 50 mother-son couples. The event started as being one night, but with the growing interest it quickly became a two-night event. Although the event is now two-nights there is still a waiting list for those who wish to attend. “T here’s a possibi l it y of growing again next year,” said McCallum. Surprise visits from Spiderman and Batman got the boys excited to see some of the superheroes they came dressed as. The mothers and sons had
an opportunity at the last station to take a picture with the superheroes. “There are people that come year after year and there are some new ones. It’s just a great opportunity for boys to dress up how they want to dress up,” said McCallum. The night ended with the superheroes and their trainers sharing a dance. Once the training courses were completed, the superheroes picked up their pictures and their certificate on completion before making their way back home.

Austintown heats things up for Veterans Day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Au st i ntow n c om mu n it y members brought their best recipes to Austintown Fitch High School for the fifth annual chili cook off on Nov. 13 to salute veterans and help raise money for the band. This year, there were 13 tables set up selling chili. There were community members, students, band parents and restaurants giving away their own chili recipe to try and win first place.
There would be two chili cook off winners, one determined by the guests who attended and voted and one voted on by judges from each of the military branches. The judges from the military branches did a blind tasting so they would not know whose chili they were trying. They then voted on which chili they liked by writing down the letter that labeled the chili. They also had the opportunity to write down any comments. Guests who attended had the
option of paying for the cook off and concert or just one or the other. Veterans who attended were able to go in for free. “We have a 50/50 raffle that all the proceeds go to local veterans in need. We get Walmart gift cards and take them to the veterans outreach center,” said Brad Gessner, Band parent and cook off organizer. There were around 400 band members from concert band and sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade marching band who put

Students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center and the Valley STEM + ME2 Academy had the opportunity to attend the annual College and Career Fair on Nov. 9 in the Joyce E. Brooks Conference Center at MCCTC. They met with more than 40 representatives from the armed services, colleges, universities, trade and technical schools and local businesses. Students were able to ask questions and gather information on all of the careers and colleges that they are considering and would like to know more about. This fair allowed them the chance to see first-hand the variety of college and trade school opportunities offered in our area.
Guess the holiday book Can you guess the holiday book title from cut up pages in a jar? One winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries at the Austintown library.
Holiday library closings All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 24, 25, 26 and 31 as well as Jan. 1 and 2.
