Future business leaders shoot for success By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Covelli Centre hosted the “Get Schooled” event for schools across the area on Dec. 1. This is the first time this event has taken place and the amount of students from various schools was much larger than first anticipated. Katie Seminara, director of game day operations for the Youngstown Phantoms, organized the event allowing the Austintown Fitch students to participant in the activities that make the game fun. Ten students from Austintown Fitch High School, part of the Future Business Leaders of America, shadowed Seminara and other workers at the Covelli Centre during a Phantoms hockey game. Businesses from around the Youngstown area set up tables for the students to visit while they attended the Phantoms game. Two 3D tables received a lot of attention. Many people gathered around the tables and observed how the 3D printer worked. The workers running the tables were open to talking about how businesses are managed
gave advice to those looking for it. “It makes me realize I only have one more year left, we have to be prepared. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do coming up this year, now it’s more like I want to do something more on the business side,” said Austin, a junior at Austintown, after experiencing how the business side of hockey games work. The students said their favorite part of the day was when they threw shirts into the crowd and when they walked on the ice during intermissions. The all agreed that it was fun being able to miss a day of school. The students were taken aback by how quickly the Covelli Centre staffed worked through the chaos during the entire game, especially during the morning when all of the different schools arrived. “I’m just so amazed by how much work they are able to handle at one time,” Sarah, a senior at Austintown, said. Opportunities are still available for schools looking to participate in this kind of event. Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci “Schools can contact us if they’re interested. We would be Austintown Fitch students Austin and Sarah attend a Youngstown Phantoms happy to host them during any game on Dec. 2 for the “Get Schooled” program. game,” said Seminara.

Thanksgiving arrangements for the dinner table By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Guests attended Fellows Riverside Gardens on Nov. 24 to create a Thanksgiving arrangement for the holiday. Marie Borocz led a lesson on how to create your own Thanksgiving centerpiece. Borocz prov ided va r ious types of flowers, cattails, plastic berries and other objects to use in the arrangements.
An array of fall colors, from red to brown, were available to choose from. Those who attended started with a flower pot to place all of their flowers in. There was a small pumpkin on a stick placed in the center of each arrangement. The flowers were then placed all around the pumpkin. Borocz, owner of Homestead Florist and Gifts, made her own centerpiece as a demonstration for the others to follow along

Horse-drawn wagon rides offer holiday fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Pioneer Trails Tree Farms offered horse-drawn wagon and tractor rides on Saturdays and Sundays starting the weekend after Thanksgiving. The rides are available from after Thanksgiving through the month of December. “The horses take a loop. They take people halfway around the farm and then come back. Following the horses is a tractor available for rides too,” owner Mary Jan Perdulla, said. The horses and wagon rides are free and open to anybody who wants to visit. The horse-drawn wagon rides take place on the weekends, while the tractor-driven rides run daily through the season. Families and friends are able to take pictures with the horses and pet them before they hop on the wagon for the ride. The horses trot around the farm and the families are able to see the farm and the many trees that are grown there. The tractor rides follow the same loop as the horses allowing the same views for those who choose the tractor rather than the horses. Many students even came in multiple times throughout the school day to play with the dogs. “It’s a really stressful time
right now for students because there is so much going on. We really just wanted students to be relaxed and to de-stress,” said Scrocco. There was a group of four dogs that arrived first and stayed for the first part of the morning. The seniors said after those dogs left there was a break to count the money and students that attended. Scrocco mentioned that during the first couple hours they raised more than $300 and had more than 120 students visit. The students were hoping to raise more than $500 by the end of the school day to donate to K-9’s for Compassion. All proceeds raised during this event were donated.
