Learn American Sign Language with the baby brilliant program

Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories on Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. This will be followed by time to play and socialize. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.

Bond with babies and books at the library Join the Poland library every Wednesday in January at 10 a.m. for a story time for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize

Weekly square dance lessons to begin Jan. 9 The Friendly Squares will begin a second session of weekly square dance lessons for beginners. The introductory session will be Jan. 9 from 7-9 p.m. Each weekly session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April and there is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares will also host their next dance on Jan. 13 at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. Poland Middle School invited professionals to their school for their Career Exploration Day on Dec. 15 to get their eighth-grade students thinking about their future. School counselor Mar y Jo Rowan organized the day for the students. They began their exploration day at Mahoning County Career and Technical School where they could see the fields offered at the school. After lunch, the students went to five presentations throughout the remainder of the day. Rowan organized the day differently than the school has done in past. She used surveys from OhioMeansJobs to help herself and the students gauge what careers they were most interested in. She asked the students to pick five career presentations out of 35 offered throughout the day. She used the surveys to figure out what careers to invite. She found a lot of students wanted to be doctors, nurses or lawyers. She invited other ca-

reers that students might not have considered to strengthen the amount of exploration the students did during the day. Rowan set up presentations in six rooms with five 20-minute presentat ions i n each room. The professionals included a veterinarian, a personal trainer, nurses, a doctor, a lawyer, a funeral home director and more. She had a graphic designer from New York City give her presentation over a video call. Principal David Purins also presented to talk about the teaching field. “It’s wonderful to see local professionals give back to the community,“ Purins said of the exploration day. He said t he day helps t he students think about their career at the high school while they talk with the professionals. The PTO of the school assisted Rowan in running the event. They signed in the professionals and showed them what class they needed to go to for the presentation. They also made a lunch for the professionals to eat before and after their presentations.

Boy Scouts to participate in gold rush The Whispering Pines Distract Klondike Gold Rush will take place the weekend of Jan. 5-7 at Great Trail Council’s Camp Stambaugh, where Boy Scouts from throughout Mahoning County and Hubbard will converge at the camp in search of gold, fun and the excitement of the Klondike Gold Rush. A Scout Klondike Derby is based on the real-life struggles encountered by the men and dogs crossing the frozen Klondike in search of wealth in the gold fields. Scouts will have the opportunity to conquer some of the same challenges that these adventures faced, in hopes of finding their own treasure. The Scouts will experi-

ence seven stations to test their abilities and earn gold. Mill Creek Metroparks hosted its annual Olde Fashioned Christmas event at Lanterman’s Mill on Nov. 25 and 26. Carol Vigorito organized the event. She brought entertainers, artisans and catering to Lanterman’s Mill. She placed the entertainers and artisans throughout the top, ground and basement floors of the mill. The public could go to the bottom of the mill to see rocks and the Mill’s wheel as well. The day allowed families to explore the mill since each area of the mill was open. Each floor and notable area had a placard explaining its significance. The ground floor also had an area detailing the history of the mill as well as the gift shop for the public. Artisans gave live demonstrations all day inside the mill. These events included woodcarving, rock painting, weaving, leatherwork, pottery and tinsmithing. Mill Creek Metroparks gave craft makers their own stations. Crafters brought soaps, signs,

Pete Fowler officiated. A reception followed at Youngstown Country Club. Parents of the bride are Dominic A. and Michele Quinn of Salem, and parents of the groom are Don and Carol Robb of East Palestine. The bride wore a lace and tulle fit-andflare gown with beaded embroidery. It was complemented with a cathedral-length train. Her bouquet was embellished with pearls and brooches from the couple’s grandmothers and great-grandmothers. Honor attendants were Susannah Stalder and Kiersten Quinn, a sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Misha Steiner; Leanne Johnson; Kelsey Ault; Shelby Wagner, a cousin of the groom; Ashlyn Myers; Porsha Barkay; and Leanna Hartsough. Flower girls were Brylee and Breena Crawford, cousins of the bride. The attendants wore spa-colored gowns. Jeff McKin and Alex Robb, brother of the groom, shared the duties of best man. Groomsmen were Jacob Patter; Kussai Naser; Ryan Huschka, a cousin of the bride; Evan Sansenbaugher; Shawn Kintz; and Aaron Hartsough. Tanner Robb, a cousin of the groom, was the ring bearer. The couple traveled to New Orleans for

their honeymoon and reside in Jacksonville. Mrs. Robb is a graduate of Youngstown State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. She is pursuing a master’s degree in healthcare. She is a personal trainer and fitness specialist at the Military Welfare and Recreation Center on Kings Bay Naval Base in St. Marys, Ga. The groom is a summa cum laude graduate of YSU where he received a bachelor’s degree in marketing management. He is an internet marketing manager/webmaster for Preston Auto Group.

Mr. End graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with bachelor’s degrees in neuroscience and history and philosophy of science. He is a third-year emergency medicine resident at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus. The bride wore an ivory ball-gown with lace appliques, an illusion neckline, lace button back and a chapel train.

Her honor attendant was Holly Koehler, and bridesmaids were Marion Alberty; Alex Kratsas, the bride’s cousin; Jessica Delvaux; and Kim Wisbith. The attendants wore steel-blue colored dresses. Eve Kratsas, godmother of the bride, served as koumbara. Brian Rieveley was best man. Groomsmen were Matt Harmon and Kevin, Gregory and Zachary End, brothers of the groom.

NAPLES, FLA. William L. and Patricia J. Jones of Canfield and Bonita Beach, Fla., marked their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 23 with a dinner at Watermark, Naples. Mr. Jones married the former Patricia J. Quaranto on Nov. 23, 1967, at St. Patrick Church, Youngstown. Mr. Jones taught in Youngstown City Schools for six years. He retired in 1997 from Riverbend Food Service Inc., where he worked as president and CEO. He also has been an environmental activist for 50 years. He is volunteer manager of Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary and is performing ornithology research for several non-governmental organizations in the state and counties in Florida and Ohio. He was president of the Audubon Society and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mrs. Jones taught in Youngstown City School, retiring in 1997. She was a member of Canfield Junior Women’s League,
