Children create cut out cookies for Santa By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children decorated cookies to set out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve during the Cookies with Santa event at Boardman Park on Dec. 21. The sold out event brought in more than 40 children and close to 100 guests total. Children spent the event rolling out cookie dough, cutting it into shapes, baking the cookies and then

using frosting and sprinkles to decorate them. “It’s a great opportunit y for families to come and have their tradition of making cut out cookies, decorating them, all that fun and leaving us the mess,” said recreation director Karen McCallum. After the children rolled out the dough and cut them into shapes, the staff and volunteers at Boardman Park would bake the cookies. While the cookies

were baking the children could write a letter to Santa and decorate a to-go box for the cookies. In the adjoining room, there were green waffles being made for guests to eat while watching “The Grinch.” Some of the children have been coming for years, while others this was their first year. “I’ve never been here before, I’m looking forward to eating the cookies,” said fifth-grader Shaelen Williams.

When the cookies finished baking, the children would go to a table and use different colored frosting and sprinkles to decorate the cookies. Some of the children said they were going to eat their cookies while others said they were going to set them out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Cookies with Santa is a tradition at Boardman Park, allowing families to start their own traditions and spend time together.

Giving Tuesday

Neighbors | Submitted

To celebrate Giving Tuesday, Cardinal Mooney High School along with an anonymous Alumna donor, contributed $500 to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. This donation was made in honor of all Lumen Christi eighth-graders in the Diocese of Youngstown and St. Paul’s School, Salem and St. Joseph the Provider School, Youngstown. Eighth-graders are unable to volunteer at the Mission due to age constraints, therefore Mooney wanted to make sure that these younger students would be represented in the annual Giving Tuesday event. CMHS Hospitality Team members presented the check to Crystal Eckman, Mission Ambassador, and toured the facility on Nov. 29. World War II veteran Jack Poteet is pictured with Principal Cindy Fernback at Boardman High School’s Veteran’s Day lunch.

BHS hosts Veterans Day lunch Boardman High School’s Emerging Leaders club invited Veterans from the Commons Assisted Living to have lunch at the school on Veterans day Nov. 11. Upon arrival, the Veterans were greeted with overwhelming applause as they walked into the cafeteria and given a standing ovation from everyone in the room. Throughout the lunch, the students asked

questions relating to service spent in both WW2 and Korea. Both faculty and students gave their thanks to the Veterans, making them feel appreciated. To further honor the Veterans, the schools choir sang “The National Anthem,” which touched everyone’s hearts. Jack Poteet, a Veteran who resides at The Commons had another reason to feel special. Poteet is a 1939 graduate of Board-

man and it is the first time he has been at the high school since it has been moved from what is now Center Middle School, where Poteet attended. Soon after Poteet graduated, feeling his obligation to his country, he enlisted in the Marines and left for Paris Island, S. C., to begin his training. Poteet’s service in WW2 continued until 1945, the year he came back home to Boardman.

Olde Fashioned Christmas brings in dozens of families By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Christmas came early for g ue st s w ho at tende d t he Lanterman’s Mill Olde Fashioned Christmas on Nov. 26 and 27. Olde Fashioned Christmas has occurred every year for more than 25 years. The twoday event is hosted the weekend

after Thanksgiving and is the last weekend the Mill is open until it reopens in April. Olde Fashioned Christmas brings in an average of 4-5,000 people over the course of two days. Several entertainers, musicians and artisans set up all around Lanterman’s Mill. The event provided opportunities for people to get a little holiday shopping in while they attend-

ed a fun, family event. “It’s a family tradition. Every weekend after Thanksgiving they bring their relatives who are in town,” said Carol Vigorito, Recreation and Education Director. There is a Giving Tree for people to bring in warm items such as coats, gloves and hats. The items will be given to the Mahoning County Educational

Service Center to give to children who are in need in the valley. The event is free for families to attend for them to get into the holiday spirit. There were chestnuts roasting for guests to try, live music, entertainers for families to watch and crafts were available for children to make. “Santa is here and will be

here both today and tomorrow to hear some wishes from the children,” said Vigorito. Vigorito is very grateful for the help of the staff and volunteers who helped transform and decorate Lanterman’s Mill for the event. Fellows Riverside Gardens and other Mill Creek locations had several helpers to make the Olde Fashioned Christmas come to life.

Students from Hitchcock Learn Center sang Christmas songs at the tree lighting at Akron’s Children Hospital in Boardman on Dec. 1.

Tree lighting brings holiday cheer By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Akron’s Children Hospital in Boardman had their annual tree lighting on Dec. 1. Hitchcock Woods Early Learning Center was part of this lighting and has been for the past seven years, ever since the event started. The students attend the event and sing Christmas carols before the lighting of the tree and when Santa Claus comes to visit. “This is one of the many ways Hitchcock Woods Early Learning Center gives back to the community,” said owner Pattie Welsh. After the Christmas caroling, everyone made their way outside to the tree. The students sang one more song and then the tree lit up and Santa came out. Santa walked around the tree and visited with the children. Guests went back inside where they could enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, talk to Santa, play games and participate in other crafts. There were clowns making balloon animals for children, members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity helped decorate cookies and other volunteers passed out refreshments. The annual tree lighting is a way to bring the Boardman community together to get into the holiday spirit.

The students at Hitchcock Woods Early Learning Center used the Thanksgiving holiday as a time to give back. Students enjoyed a feast on Nov. 22 after several weeks of bringing in non-perishable food items for their food drive. The students ate turkey, stuffing and other Thanksgiving favorites. Many of the students wore hats as they ate. Everyone gave thanks before they shared a meal together. From Nov. 1-17 students brought in any non-perishable food items and other goods that would be donated to the Second

Harvest Food Bank. Several items were brought in for the food drive and there were many bags and boxes filled to the top with the donations. BHS marching band performs in Chicago’s Thanksgiving Day parade T he Boa rd ma n Spa r t a n Marching Band recently returned from Chicago after a busy, but fun-filled Thanksgiving break. The band accepted its recurring invitation to march in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade where it was seen by more than 400,000 people on State Street. Millions more saw the group’s performance as the parade was broadcast nationally on Chicago’s WGN network and online. This was the 89th year of the Thanksgiving Day parade in Chicago, though it has had many different names based on sponsorship. Director of Bands Thomas Ruggieri said the band has been in this parade more than any

other high-profile event. “The Chicago parade has been a once-every-four-years destination for us since the early 1970s,” he said. While in Chicago, the students enjoyed a dinner/dance reception for all of the marching bands in the parade. BHS Jazz Ensemble 1 got to perform a set during dinner for more than 2,000 student musicians and their band directors. Also on the itinerary was a Thanksgiving dinner cruise on Lake Michigan, Black Friday shopping and sightseeing on The Magnificent Mile, the Willis Tower Sky deck, the Lincoln Park Zoo, Millennium Park, Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza and the BroadNeighbors | Submitted way in Chicago production of Spartan Marching Band in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade in Chicago. “Finding Neverland.”

Students throw residents a holiday party By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Nursing students from Kent State University East Liverpool thanked the residents and staff at Assumption Village on Nov. 30 for letting them have their clinical there. The students were led by their nursing professor, Angela Douglass. Douglass has been a nursing professor for 13 years and enjoys not only teaching the students how to become practical nurses, but teaching them how to be caring and giving. “This is our last day here, so as a thank you to the staff and

residents we are throwing a Christmas party,” said nursing student Danielle Rollison. This is the second year nursing students had the opportunity to do their clinical at Assumption Village. At the end of the semester, the students bring in treats and play games with the residents and staff as a way of saying thank you. “Part of my curriculum goal is to teach them to build relationship skills, therapeutic skill by communication. Also teaching compassion, care and reaching out to the community that they are a part of,” said Douglass. There a re a ny where be-

tween six and eight students in a clinical group. This semester, Douglass taught two groups at Assumption Village. This gives the students, residents and faculty a chance to get to know each other on a personal level over the eightweek time period they are there. Douglass and the nursing students explained that they are grateful for Assumption Village for being an amazing host and allowing them to do their clinical study there. The students not only gain knowledge for their studies, but they also form relationships and learn life lessons.
