“It’s really about getting people healthy. Weight loss is what brings people in, but they get healthier in the process.” - Dr. James Leone

Check Out These Local People “It Really Works.” LINDA LOST 122 LBS!*

“I use to have heartburn everyday and I no longer have it at all. My metabolism was very slow when I started the program but is good now and where it should be. I wore size 20-22 and now I wear size 12. This program does not need any improvements, it’s great the way it is.” - Linda • Youngstown, OH

GABE LOST 65 LBS!*

“It has been a journey that I needed to take because I have been overweight my entire life and this experience has benefited me greatly. I feel great and have more energy. Joint pain is considerably less and I feel much lighter.” Gabe - Boardman, OH

*None of these people were paid for their testimonies, and they are not employed by NutriMost.

Dr. James Leone began a journey 2 years ago that helped many people create realistic weight loss goals and have great success with the program. NutriMost is located in Boardman and Leone said that it is not a weight-loss program, but a personalized fat loss program. He makes it clear that there is a distinct difference between the two. “We don’t want people just losing weight, we want them losing fat,” Leone said. “A person can starve themselves and lose weight, (this is what most diet programs do); however, they won’t get into fat burning.” NutriMost is a personalized wellness and weight program that is scientifically designed to get people into optimal fat burning. At the office, Leone runs a Body Composition Analysis (BCA) on each patient. This provides a snapshot of the patients’ current health condition measuring 9 critical factors. For example, it shows body fat percentage, hydration levels, and how effective their metabolism is working to name a few. One of the most crucial aspects that the Body Composition Analysis determines is whether the patient is hydrated. What he had to say about patients’ hydration levels was shocking. “Just about 100 percent of the people we check are dehydrated,” Leone said. “We’re the only program that checks for this in a high tech way and we are the only program that has procedures to get people better hydrated. Getting better hydrated is not as simple as drinking more water. Your body has to have the chemical and nutritional wherewithal to hold the water and move the water into the cells. Otherwise, your brain knowing that your body is dehydrated will hold fat cells hostage for their water content.” The Body Composition Analysis Report also shows the patient’s metabolic age. If the age of one’s metabolism is running above their current age, their metabolism is slow and they are trapped in fat storage instead of fat burning. The NutriMost Wellness and Weight Loss Program is scientifically designed to get each person’s body flipped from fat storage into fat burning, Leone said. Leone is not only endorsing a program that he thinks works, he has undergone the program himself and had successful results. “I have struggled with weight since I was a kid,” Leone said. “So I know what it is like to be overweight. I was at my highest weight several years ago. Being interested in natural health care and nutrition I have tried all those different diet programs on my own without lasting results. I was pre-diabetic. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high triglycerides. I was the same age my dad was when he started to have heart attacks and I felt terrible. I was afraid that I was going to have a heart attack.” This was Dr. Leone’s motivation to begin a NutriMost program for himself. He lost 30 pounds in three weeks and has kept it off for a year now. He is no longer pre-diabetic, and his blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol are at good levels. He also said that just about every one of his patients who start the program with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes has to lower or completely get off their medication altogether because they no longer need it. This program is a life transforming program. It changes a person’s relationship with food. Their life will never be the same again in good ways because of this program.” The nutritional program does not have any prepackaged foods and there are no shakes. Leone said that the patient eats the healthy, nutritious foods that people buy at grocery stores such as proteins, vegetables and fruits. It is a reduced calorie program. Leone has been a practicing chiropractor for over 39 years and has been involved in natural health care methods and nutrition. He is also a certified chiropractic orthopedist. RELIEF FOR

HEEL PAIN Heel pain often sets in for individuals who work on their feet all day or run regularly. Pressure on your heel can lead to plantar fasciitis or other ailments that can affect your quality of life. Our podiatric physicians use safe, effective and affordable treatments to stop the pain and keep you active. For advanced cases of plantar fasciitis, we use highly effective wave therapy that has completely removed heel pain for many of our patients. This in-office treatment option is completely safe and requires no anesthesia.

For the most intense cases of plantar fasciitis, doctors apply therapy that delivers acoustic pressure waves to stimulate metabolism, enhance blood circulation and accelerate the healing process, without any incisions.

Treatment Protocol Helps Patients Conquer Plantar Fasciitis Heel pain is commonplace, but not every case of heel pain is the same. That’s why podiatric physicians apply a wide range of treatments for heel pain, often called plantar fasciitis. “Basic treatments, like anti-inflammatory medicines and stretching exercises, can often alleviate basic cases of plantar fasciitis, so we apply those treatments initially,” said Dr. Robert Debiec, a foot and ankle surgeon with Ankle & Foot Care Centers in Boardman. “When cases persist after those treatments, we apply more advanced treatments like physical therapy, custom orthotics and platelet-rich plasma injections,” Dr. Debiec said. In some cases of plantar fasciitis, doctors apply shockwave therapy, which delivers a unique set of acoustic pressure waves that stimulate the metabolism, enhance blood circulation and accelerate the healing process, without any incisions. “This has been a very effective treatment for many of our patients,” said Dr. Mark Smesko, a colleague of Dr. Debiec at Ankle & Foot Care Centers. “It is non-

invasive and safe. Years ago, our doctors and many Mahoning Valley patients participated in clinical research that demonstrated the effectiveness of this therapy for treating heel pain.” At its 20 offices throughout the Mahoning Valley and western Pennsylvania, Ankle & Foot Care Centers uses a shockwave technique called EPAT, or extracorporeal pulse activation technology. “Our protocol calls for surgery as a very last step because our goal is to get the heel pain eliminated without surgery,” Dr. Smesko said. “In the vast majority of cases where patients are compliant with the treatments we prescribe, surgery is not necessary.” The best way to get started with treatment for plantar fasciitis is to make an appointment with an experienced podiatric physician. Ankle & Foot Care Centers can be reached at (330) 619-4547. More information is available at the company’s website, www.ankleandfootcare.com. Submitted by Ankle & Foot Care Center

5 low-calorie snacks that stray from the norm Snacking may not seem like part of a healthy diet, but the right snacks can help men and women fight midday hunger without contributing to unwanted weight gain. The following low-calorie snacks won’t compromise adults’ efforts to maintain healthy weights, and they might prove useful as men and women look for that extra boost during the day. 1. Popcorn: Popcorn is low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber. Popcorn also is high in polyphenols, which are antioxidants that have been linked to reductions in heart disease and certain cancers. Air-popped popcorn that is prepared without any oil is your best option, as a cup of such popcorn may only add up to about 30 calories. Avoid adding salt or butter or purchasing premade popcorn that is heavy on both, as both ingredients can compromise the health benefits of popcorn. 2. Nonfat Greek yogurt: Though it’s not as low in calories as popcorn, nonfat Greek yogurt is still a low-calorie snack that’s high in protein. Nonfat Greek yogurt may have as much as two times the amount of protein as traditional yogurts,

and that’s beneficial because protein helps you feel full longer, which should help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid overeating. Nonfat Greek yogurt also tends to have less sugar than traditional yogurts, and its creamy texture gives many people the impression that they are eating something decadent. 3. Hummus: Made primarily from ground chickpeas, hummus is a protein- and fiber-rich snack that has been linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk for heart disease and certain types of cancers. Dip vegetables such as baby carrots into hummus, and you’ll have a lowcalorie snack that’s also high in vitamin A and beta carotene. 4. Pistachios: Many people might read the labels of pistachios and be turned off by the fat content. But pistachios are low in saturated fat and high in protein, and a couple dozen pistachios may only amount to about 95 calories. Eat pistachios raw and do not add salt, which can negate their health benefits.

5. Grapes: Grapes might not be as popular as potato chips or other widely available snacks, but they are great sources of vitamin K and are loaded with antioxidants. Grapes are loaded with water, making them a filling snack that can help men and women avoid dehydration. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, one cup of grapes can provide as much as 5 percent of the recommended daily value of dietary fiber despite containing just over 100 calories. WRTA Gives the Valley a Lift – Daily and Saturday Fixed Route Trips Increased in Mahoning County

Western Reserve Transit Authority now provides hourly service on most routes in Mahoning County. The increase in service adds approximately 56 more trips to the approximately 300 weekday trips and nearly doubles the number of Saturday trips. WHY THE INCREASE IN SERVICE? According to James Ferraro, Executive Director, “We already serve the targeted areas, but riders told us they needed more frequent trips. Previously, some had to wait two hours for service. But now, most of our routes will have service every hour.” PART OF THE PLAN The service increase is Phase 3 of WRTA’s Revamp and Upgrade Plan: • Phase 1 was assessing needs and upgrading systems • Pha se 2 i ncluded replaci ng WRTA’s fleet of vehicles • Phase 3 is increasing service to provide more trips SERVING A CRITICAL NEED Anyone can ride the bus, at reasonable rates as low as 60¢ per trip for seniors and people with disabilities. Many WRTA riders have no other means of reliable transportation. They ride WRTA to get to work,

medical appointments and for shopping. Students rely on WRTA to get to school. Seniors and people with disabilities count on WRTA to get to medical appointments and to visit relatives. And people who have automobiles but want to reduce carbon emissions and their impact on the environment leave their cars at home and use WRTA whenever possible. WRTA GIVES THE VALLEY A LIFT WRTA riders are a vital part of the economy of Mahoning County. Transportation is the key to most employment, and without WRTA, many people in the County would not be able to get or keep a job. Likewise, WRTA is the key transportation for shopping and medical appointments. Both or key drivers of our economy. WRTA provides transportation for people who have no other reliable way to get to jobs, shopping and appointments, and helps seniors and people with disabilities get where they must go. MORE INFORMATION Information about WRTA services, including the newly revised route schedules, is available at WRTAonline.com. Submitted by WRTA

Managing prediabetes or diabetes Diabetes and its precursor is a major problem, both in the United States and across the globe. In 2015, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that nearly 50 percent of adults living in the United States have diabetes or prediabetes, a condition marked by higher than normal blood glucose levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reports that the global prevalence of diabetes figures to rise from 8 percent in 2011 to 10 percent by 2030. Preventing diabetes should be a priority for men, women and children, but management must take precedence for the millions of people who have already been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, making healthy food choices is an essential step in preventing or managing diabetes. Making those choices can be difficult for those people who have never before paid much attention to their diets, but the AHA offers the following advice to people dealing with prediabetes or diabetes.

Limit foods that may worsen your condition. Some foods, including fiberrich whole grains and fish like salmon that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, can help people with prediabetes or diabetes. But many more foods must be limited, if not largely ignored. Limit your consumption of sweets and added sugars, which can be found in soda, candy, cakes, and jellies. It’s also good to limit your sodium intake and resist fatty meats like beef and pork. Document your eating habits. The AHA recommends that people with prediabetes or diabetes maintain a food log to see how certain foods affect their blood glucose levels. Within 60 to 90 minutes of eating, check your blood glucose levels to see how your body reacts to the foods you eat. As your food log becomes more extensive, you will begin to see which foods match up well with your body and which foods you may want to avoid. Plan your meals. Hectic schedules have derailed many a healthy lifestyle, but people who have been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes do

not have the luxury of straying from healthy diets. Plan your meals in advance so your eating schedule is not erratic and your diet includes the right foods, and not just the most convenient foods. Bring lunch and a healthy snack to work with you each day rather than relying on fast food or other potentially unhealthy options in the vicinity of your office. Embrace alternative ingredients. Upon being diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes, many people assume they must abandon their favorite foods. But that’s not necessarily true. Many dishes can be prepared with alternative ingredients that are diabetesfriendly. In fact, the AHA has compiled a collection of diabetes-friendly recipes that can be accessed by visiting www. heart.org. A prediabetes or diabetes diagnosis requires change, but these conditions can be managed without negatively affecting patients’ quality of life. Metro Creative Services

Sleep Right disturbs mood and leads to daytime sleepiness. The AASM notes that researchers estimate that insomnia costs an estimated $63 billion in lost work performance each year in the U.S. Combating insomnia is no small task, but the following healthy sleep habits may help men and women overcome their bouts of insomnia and get more restful sleep. Drinking water or beverages that include caffeine or alcohol too close to bedtime can interrupt sleep or make it difficult to fall asleep. Too much water before going to bed may lead to nightly bathroom breaks that interrupt your sleep. Alcohol consumed too close to bedtime may make it easy to fall asleep fast, but you’re likely to wake up once the effects of the alcohol wear off. In addition, avoid caffeinated beverages in the late afternoon or evening, as caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and may compromise your ability to fall asleep. Nicotine also serves as a stimulant, so smokers fighting insomnia should avoid tobacco products in the hours before they plan to go to bed.

Adequate sleep is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. But as beneficial as a good night’s rest is, restful sleep is proving elusive for millions of people across the globe. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 10 percent of adults in the United States have a chronic insomnia disorder. That translates to roughly 32 million people in the United States who struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep at least three times per week for at least three months. Sufficient sleep boosts energy levels and makes it easier to focus and concentrate, while insomnia contributes to poor memory,

Since 1972, Shepherd of the Valley has been committed to providing care for our community, both in their facilities and in private homes. Shepherd’s home health agency, At Home With Shepherd, has provided quality care since it opened its doors. Providing both medical and non-medical services, they are able to help care for people in their home following an illness, injury or surgery. Often, these services are paid for by insurance. This allows people to get better while being in the comfort of their own home. Medicare is now grading home health agencies on the quality of their care utilizing a star rating. Agencies are given a score out of 5 possible stars. At Home With Shepherd achieved a 4.5 star rating, the highest in the Mahoning Valley. “We are proud of the care we provide and were happy our score reflected the quality of the services our staff delivers,” At Home With Shepherd’s Director Kris Siciliano said. “Many people do not realize that home health provides nursing, therapy and aide services all in the privacy of your own home.” At Home With Shepherd has also been awarded Home Care Elite, a designation reserved for the top 25% of all home care

agencies. In 2015, they were recognized as one of the top 500 home health agencies in the country. Often, people assume they will need to be in a hospital or nursing facility following a surgery or injury. Home health is not always considered as an option. “Too often the public has the misconception that after a knee or hip replacement, people will be required to stay in a hospital or nursing facility following surgery. The reality is hospitals prepare the patient to go home to familiar surroundings as soon as possible,” said Don Kacmar, Shepherd’s past Executive Director. Following retirement, Kacmar had a knee replacement. When it was time to go home, he was offered home health and opted to use At Home With Shepherd. “After a little over 3 weeks I was discharged from home health care and was able to return to a relatively normal level of functioning. So many times I had heard how impressive the staff is and now that I was a client, I can indeed compliment the team who directly cared for me,” Kacmar said To learn more about home health services, contact At Home With Shepherd at 330-530-4041.

How New Parents Can Squeeze in Physical Activity

Though expecting parents no doubt anticipate changing their lifestyles to accommodate their growing families, few may know the specifics of how their lifestyles will change. Though each couple is different, many couples see their exercise habits change dramatically upon the birth of their child. A 2011 study from researchers at the University of Minnesota found that both mothers and fathers had lower amounts of physical activity compared with nonparents. Mothers who participated in the study

reported engaging in 2.36 hours of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, or MVPA, per week, while women without children reported engaging in 3.19 hours of MVPA per week. The disparity was even greater among fathers, who reported getting 5.33 hours of MVPA per week compared to 6.89 hours of MVPA per week for men without children. While the following ideas may not replace the vigorous workouts new parents are accustomed to, they may help men and women maintain healthy body weights. Skip shortcuts. Physical activity can be embraced just about anywhere. Though you may be used to daily workouts at the gym, such excursions may no longer fit into your schedule. To counter your reduced hours at the gym, skip the shortcuts you have grown accustomed to taking. For example, take the stairs up to your office instead of the elevator and park further away so you can squeeze in some cardiovascular exercise. Spread your workouts out over the course of the day. Many people tend to get all of their daily physical activity in one fell swoop. Workouts can still be effective if you spread them out over the course of the day. Exercising in small in-

tervals throughout the day may help you maintain your energy throughout the day, and that should be especially appealing to parents of newborns. Squeeze in a quick workout each time your child naps, and do your best to meet your daily quota while your spouse is tending to the baby. Continue setting fitness goals. Once your child comes home, it’s easy to fall into a routine that does not include exercise. But your long-term health depends on a host of factors, including how physically active you are. Keep setting fitness goals even if it seems like you will have no time once your child is born. These goals can motivate you to find time for exercise no matter how much your lifestyle has changed. Take your child along. W hen the weather permits, include your child in your exercise routine by ta k ing the baby along with you on walks or bike rides. Purchase a fitness stroller so you can continue to jog even while you look after your child. New parents need not abandon their exercise routines upon welcoming their child into the world. A concerted effort on the parts of moms and dads can ensure they continue to get adequate exercise each day.

Austintown Podiatry Associates The Area’s Premier Foot and Ankle Care

Keeping up with the newest medical procedures is not a problem for this podiatry practice. Austintown Podiatry Associates wants to serve the community by providing technologically advanced treatment of the foot and ankle in an office that is close to home. “We are always on the cutting edge of technology in our practice,” said Dr. Larry Karlock of Austintown Podiatry Associates. “Instead of sending patients to Cleveland or Pittsburgh, we can do it here.” Karlock explains that neuropathy occurs when small nerves start to die causing numbness. For diabetics, this usually occurs in the feet and then later throughout the hands. He says that when this happens, people can’t feel what they are walking on. Peripheral nerve decompression surgery is an option for this problem. According to Dr. Karlock, it has a 75 percent improvement rate. The surgery simply divides the ligament that the affected nerves are next to, which provides a larger opening for blood flow and joint mobility. Dr. Karlock says that the two major risk factors for problems

in diabetic patients are blood circulation issues and numbness. “Patients with neuropathy are fifteen times more likely to develop an amputation of the foot,” said Karlock. A new surgical procedure called the Dellon Triple Nerve Release is also available through this medical facility. Dr. John Flauto of Austintown Podiatry Associates has specialized training from the prestigious Dellon Institiute located in Baltimore. “We’re taking the scar tissue off the nerves so they can get more blood flow and more sensation,” said Flauto. Testing must be completed to determine if a patient is a candidate for this procedure, but it can be up to 75 percent effective in those who qualify. If neuropathy isn’t an issue but chronic heel pain is orthoscopic treatment may be the solution. Orthotripsy, a nonsurgical procedure is 85 percent effective in patients with chronic heel spurs/ plantar fasciitis, according to Karlock. It is a one time treatment that operates through high energy shock waves. See PODIATRY, Page E17

Seniors and Falls: Prevention Tips from Comfort Keepers About one third of the senior population over the age of 65 falls each year, but since many incidents go unreported by seniors and unrecognized by family members or caregivers – this estimate is most likely quite low. Approximately 9,500 deaths of older Americans are associated with falls each year. Falls are the leading cause of death from injury among people 65 and older, and the risk of falls increases proportionately with age. At 80 years, over half of seniors fall annually. Falls, with or without injury, also carry a heavy quality of life impact. A growing number of older adults fear falling and, as a result, limit their activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation, and feelings of helplessness. The most profound effect of falling is the loss of independent living. Fall Prevention Safety: 20 Things You Can Do to Help 1. Remove obstacles inside and outside of the house that could cause tripping. 2. Install handrails and lights on staircases, with light switches at the top and bottom of the stairs. You may even consider glow-in-the-dark or lighted switches. 3. Add non-slip treads for bare wooden steps.

4. Install shower and tub grab bars in the bathroom, around the toilet and the tub. 5. Place non-slip mats on the shower floor and bathtub. 6. Secure loose rugs with double-faced tape, tacks, or slip-resistant backing. 7. Repair loose, wooden floorboards and carpeting. 8. Store clothing, dishes, food and other necessities within easy reach. 9. Immediately clean spilled liquids, grease, or food. 10. Paint doorsills with a different, highlighting color to avoid tripping. 11. Make home lighting brighter, but prevent glare. Place night lights in the bedroom, bathroom and hallways. Place a lamp within easy reach of the bed for middle-of-the-night needs. 12. Store working flashlights in easyto-find places in case of power outages. 13. Have vision checked often and regularly. 14. Ask the doctor to review medications regularly for side effects and interactions. 15. If he or she is able, have the senior start exercising on a regular basis tai chi or yoga can increase flexibility and strengthen muscles and joints. 16. If the senior can’t stand comfortably, have him or her exercise in a chair.

“It pulverizes the heel spur area and causes new blood vessels to grow, shrinks up the inflamed tissue and relieves pain,” said Karlock. SLEEP

Continued from Page E14

The AASM recommends getting out of bed if you haven’t fallen asleep within 20 minutes of lying down. The longer you lay in bed without falling asleep, the more likely you are to dwell on your sleeping problems. If you need to get out of bed, spend some quiet time reading a book in another room before returning to bed. Two to three hours before bedtime, dim the lights in your home. Dim lighting signals to your brain that it should

17. Have the senior wear sensible shoes. They should be properly fitting, sturdy shoes with non-skid soles. 18. Note any health conditions such as dizziness, joint pain, numbness, or shortness of breath when walking. Tell the doctor, should any of these occur. He or she may evaluate muscle strength, balance and walking style (gait) as well. 19. Have the senior use assistive devices, if needed. The doctor might recommend using a cane or walker to keep him or her steady.

20. Consider a PERS (Personal Emergency Response System) unit that will alert others when help is needed. Comfort Keepers® can help. Getting help after an immobilizing fall improves the chance of survival by 80 percent and increases the likelihood of a return to independent living. Of course, it is best to prevent falls in the first place. Comfort Keepers can perform home safety assessments, and offer practical solutions and products to keep seniors safe. KIDNEY

CARE

You have several options when it comes to treating kidney failure, including the type, frequency, and duration of your treatments. Working with your doctor or healthcare team, you can determine the specific therapy and schedule that works best for you. Your options will be based on your health, preferred lifestyle, commitment to care and your care support system. The commonly discussed treatments include: Home Hemodialysis (HHD), In-center Hemodialysis (IHD), Peritoneal Dialysis (PD), and Transplantation. We, at the Renal Group Nephrology practice in Boardman, started the first home Hemodialysis program in Ohio in order to better serve our patients. We chose NxStage System to serve this purpose and to date we have the largest Home Hemodialysis program in Ohio with well trained nurses and physicians. Patients typically perform treatments four to six days per week in the comfort of their own home. Performing more frequent home hemodialysis may improve your quality of life and have clinical benefits. At our program, we’ve seen first-hand how patients have enjoyed

improved health and a better quality of life through more home hemodialysis. But don’t take our word for it. Many studies have shown that the benefits of home hemodialysis go far beyond convenience. These benefits based on published data include: more energy, fewer diet and fluid restrictions, more likely to receive a kidney transplantation, ability to keep working, better sleep, better blood pressure control with fewer medications, less stress on your heart and improved survival. All forms of hemodialysis, including treatments performed in-center and at home, involve some risks. Patients differ and not everyone will experience the reported benefits of more frequent home hemodialysis. Talk to your doctor to see if home hemodialysis is right for you. The following questions will help you get started with the discussion: 1. What are the benefits of more frequent home hemodialysis? 2. What are the risks of home hemodialysis? How safe is it? 3. What is the difference between home hemodialysis and in-center dialysis? See KIDNEY, Page E19

16th Anniversary Pink Ribbon Cheer Classic

Medication mismanagement can be prevented Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to properly manage medications can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians’ instructions. Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists estimates that more than 34 percent of senior citizens are prescribed medications by more than one physician, and 72 percent use medications they were prescribed more than six months prior. Many people also have begun “pharmacy shopping” to save money. According to a study published in 2010 in American Nurse Today, 44 percent of men and 57 percent of women older than age 65 take five or more medications per week, with some taking as many as 10. Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips. Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-counter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy

to any new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize. Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management. Organizers have daily slots and may also differentiate between nighttime and daytime medications. Understand why each medication is being prescribed. Ask your pharmacist and doctor to explain why each medication is prescribed. This information should be printed on the prescription label. Some drugs designed for one symptom may actually be used to treat other issues as well. Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses throughout the day. Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver. Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications. Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor. Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse. Metro Creative Services

These partnerships are meant to provide survivor recognition, awareness, and education. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from the event are donated to The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center located in Youngstown, Ohio. This event is recognized nationally throughout the organization of Zeta Tau Alpha, and due to the continued success of the event, the alumnae and collegiate chapters have been acknowledged for their dedication and fundraising efforts. At the heart of the fundraising event is the Survivor Ceremony which is scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m. It honors those women and men who are battling or survived the breast cancer. In the past, participants have ranged from less than a year to over fifty year survivors. We invite all breast cancer survivors to join us in celebration of their fight and triumph over this disease. Admission is free to survivors, and we ask all participants to register at the survivor table by 12:30 p.m. the day of the event for further instructions. Cheerleading squads participating in the event are eligible to win awards based off the following categories: Biggest Donor, Community Awareness, and Awareness Banner. The top five youth teams and the top five junior/high

KIDNEY

school teams are awarded in each category. Struthers Little Wildcats (youth team, and overall biggest donor) and the Mohawk Cheerleaders (junior/high school team) took home the 2015 Biggest Donor Awards. In addition, the All Pinked Out award debuting this year will give squads the chance to win the opportunity to perform at a YSU basketball game or Phantoms Hockey- Pink in the Rink game. Come see who will take home this year’s titles! The 16th Anniversary of the Pink Ribbon Cheer Classic will take place on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Center.
