Arbor Day was celebrated in Ohio on April 26, and more than 350 fourth-grade students in Boardman rolled up their sleeves and planted a tree. The students became members of Fourth Grade Foresters USA. The project’s goal is to help revitalize observation of Arbor Day in America’s schools. Fourt h-grade students at Stadium Drive, Robinwood La ne, Ma rket St reet, West Boulevard and St. Charles in Boardman all received trees to take home and plant, courtesy of the Boardman Lions Club. “This is a great opportunity for our elementary school students to become involved in a worthwhile environmental project, and also learn the value that trees provide in all of our lives,” said Terry Shears of the Boardman Lions. Fourth Grade Foresters USA was created to provide a simple way to give fourth-grade students a tree of their own to plant and care for. Each student was given a Norway Spruce packaged by workers with disabilities. Li-

The program took place in the school auditorium, followed by a private luncheon. Cardinal Mooney High School celebrated its 2019 Distinguished Alumni, from left, Barbara L. Burgnaux (‘66), E. Jewelle Johnson (‘90) and Joseph S. Rosky (‘73) at a ceremony at the school on April 12 and again at the Celebrate Mooney Auction on April 13.

history. From there, Brugnaux took on increasing leadership roles within the justice system such as Vigo County Superior Judge, Indiana Bar of Board Examiners and Senior Judge of Indiana, among others. Brugnaux’s community has felt her impact through her lifetime membership in Girl Scouts of America, Board of Trustees at Saint Mary-ofthe-Woods, Terre Haute Symphony Board of Directors and many more organizations. Brugnaux has been a continuous supporter of Cardinal Mooney through the Annual Fund and a Capital Campaign donation in 1993. After Mooney, Rosky graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in Industrial Management. From there, he discovered his true calling with the Boardman Fire Department. He returned to college to earn an Associate Degree in Fire Science. Rosky ultimately made the rank of Captain and retired as Assistant Chief. He spent 15 years on the Metro Arson Strike Team, as well as a three-year term on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Branch of International Association of Arson Investigators of which he was a 20-year member. Rosky has served the church by being an Adult Altar Server and Usher for St. Charles Parish for many years. Joe has been a continuous contributor to the Annual Fund, and also helped pay for the tuition for a student of a family friend, sharing the Cardinal Mooney experience with

a younger generation. While at Mooney, Johnson was voted Most Likely to Succeed by her classmates, a superlative that has proven prophetic. Johnson graduated from Miami University with Bachelor of Philosophy and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Johnson earned her Juris Doctor from Duke University Law School. She is the Assistant General Counsel and Chief Employment Counsel for Graphic Packaging International, a publicly traded company that is one of the largest producers of folding cartons and coated, recycled boxboard. Prior to her current role, Johnson served as an equity partner at Fisher and Phillips. Throughout Atlanta and Georgia, Johnson has been recognized for her leadership, and given back to others. Johnson has twice, in 2013 and 2018, been appointed to the Chair of the Georgia State Personnel Board by Governor Nathan Deal. In 2007, she served as president of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys. Johnson has supported the Fulton County Atlanta Boys and Girls clubs, Atlanta Legal Aide Society’s Advisory committee and the Atlanta Business League, among many other organizations. Johnson felt the call to support Cardinal Mooney by honoring her mother. The Lizzie Johnson Scholarship was established and funded by Johnson to support students and honor the hard work her mother put in to send Johnson to St. Dominic Elementary School and Cardinal Mooney.

The Mill Creek Parks Metro Mutts group celebrated Easter on April 20 with a visit from the Easter Bunny. Group organizer Dana Sidney organized the event, which she said the group puts on annually. “We like to do holiday events, including the Easter Bunny and Santa on Christmas,” Sidney said. The Metro Mutts group hosts free walks twice a month for community members to attend. After this hike around Mill Creek group members gathered at Bears Den Cabin for refreshments and photos. “It’s a lot of fun, it’s a great way for the dogs to have a good time too,” Sidney said. A photographer from Mill Creek Park took photos of the animals and their owners. The Metro Mutts group can be joined by anyone for their

monthly walk, though Sidney said certain events are members only. Members of the group are allowed to take free trolly and boat rides with their dogs during different parts of the year. “We get to do a lot, it can be a lot of fun,” Sidney said. To become a member of the group community members can pay $35 either on the Mill Creek Park website or by mail. Sidney said that new this year the group is also being joined by various adoptable dogs. Volunteers from local animal shelters occasionally bring different dogs that are available for adoption on the Metro Mutts hikes. “It has become a great way to connect dog lovers with dogs that need homes,” Sidney said. For more information on upcoming Metro Mutts events or to become a member of the group go to www.millcreekmetroparks.org.

Student honored at spring concert OUR TOWN

briefs

By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Boardman High School student band members participated in their last performance of the year on May 1 for the annual spring concert. Led by director Thomas Ruggieri and assistant director Timothy Tuite, students performed a number of songs they practiced throughout the year. “It’s a great tradition; everyone enjoys coming out to the concert,” said Communications Specialist Amy Radinovic. During the school’s performance a number of seniors were selected to perform their senior solos. Seniors Danny Turillo and Sophia McGee performed selections that they chose during the performance. Ruggieri said that usually, one senior is selected to perform a solo in the winter concert, but three students solos were equally as impressive so they were all selected to perform. Senior Miles Spearman also performed his senior solo earlier in the school year. “In addition to being amazing musicians, many of these students are extremely successful academically,” Ruggieri said. He explained that Turillo, McGee and Spearman were all recognized as valedictorian this year. “If you get to know these kids and some of their
