West Side Cats would like to introduce you to Oreo, a sweet, loving and friendly black female cat. She is roughly 11⁄2 years-old. She did come in with Alopecia, most likely because of over grooming herself, or possibly because of stress. Her hair is coming back in quickly. Oreo doesn’t like other cats and stays to herself. She loves children. The shelter doesn’t know how she would react to a dog. Stop by and see her. WSC is open from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Handsome Mr. Winston is still looking for the perfect country home. He needs room to run and play. He would like a home with other dogs, where he can romp around and be a dog. City life isn’t for him. Pawz 2 Adopt is not sure how he does with little children, but an older child would be a great companion for him. The shelter doesn’t know how he does with cats, he may chase them. Contact Nancy Ferrell Logero with Pawz 2 Adopt if you are interested in giving him the loving home this guy needs.

Austintown land swap made official By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown Board of Eduation members and administrators hosted a special dedication ceremony at the 911 Memorial Park in Austintown on July 20. The Austintown trustees and the board came to an agreement to exchange the 911 Memorial Park land for the site of the former Davis and Woodside Elementary schools. The 911 Memorial Park land contains

fields for the Austintown Fitch softball team to practice and play their games. “I can look across the street toward our campus. It’s a good safety feature, it’s convenient, so why not do what’s common sense for our community?” Said Kathy Mock, Austintown Board of Education President. The partnership between the Austintown Board of Education and township trustees has been an ongoing relationship. There

have been meetings about the exchange of the land and how it makes sense for the students and the community. “It’s really good when community leaders can get together and do something that makes sense,” sa id Rick Stauf fer, Austintown township trustee.

The Austintown trustees can use the site of the former elementary schools however they wish. The township will continue to keep up the maintenance of 911 Memorial Park and the school district will maintain the non-Memorial Park area and the ball fields.

Mill Creek MetroParks hosted an Explore! program for children to attend on July 1214 and learn about wilderness skills. Cara Hahn, the program and event coordinator at Mill Creek MetroParks, led the chil-

dren through various activities during the three days to learn how to survive in the wilderness. The children also learned Leave No Trace skills along with learning how to make their way through the woods with only a compass and a map. The children started their journey at Ford Nature Center and using only a map and compass, they hiked to the Lily Pond. Hahn and the children

stops at checkpoints along the way to make sure they were staying on the right path. Hahn would ask the children at each checkpoint which direction they needed to travel next and made sure they were reading their compass and maps correctly. The children kept an eye out during their hike and other activities for things they learned from Hahn. If there was some-

thing the children found in the park, such as litter, they would pick it up and throw it away as part of their Leave No Trace skills. The Explore! program has occurred several times at Mill Creek MetroParks during the summer and educates the children on different parts of the wilderness while providing them with fun and entertainment.
