Socrates Cafe brings philosophy to library by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Austintown library hosted the Friends of the PLYMC Socrates Cafe Philosophy Group in their small meeting room on Sept. 11. Facilitator Shirley Bartlett opened the discussion by talking about the literature another member, Assunta Delfre, checked out to read. Delfre had Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale“ with her. The group said they enjoyed the Socrates Cafe meetings because it allows them to hear from other people that do not think the same as they do. The discussions make the members think about how other people think and live. The participants in the event agreed that more people need to talk to each other in this manner.
The book sparked Bartlett to begin a conversation on a dystopian future caused by environmental issues. The conversation brought up other ideas of dystopia and utopia as used in other works of literature. Bartlett added different philosophers’ thoughts on environmentalism and utopia. Bartlett then asked the group to name their favorite philosophers. Bill Zorn answered with Immanuel Kant and explained some of the philosophies he particularly agreed with or disagreed with but found interesting. These philosophies led to discussions on morality on present-day issues, like capital punishment and isolation for prisoners. The group also talked about personal choices, addiction, euthanasia and government spending.

Pumpkin artist Ron Roberts of Salem had a booth set up in the Kidston Pavilion at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Oct. 15. Roberts had a booth last year as well. He placed some pumpkins on display around him and some on the path near the booth.
There was a pumpkin decorating area available in the basement of the Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens. The downstairs of the Davis Center also included panels from Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society, Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley, the Garden District Neighborhood, Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown, zoologist and bug enthusiast Jim Smolka, artist Jim Green and author Hugh Earnhart as well as a face painting room with Jeanne Rees and her daughters.

Mill Creek Metroparks hosted its annual Pumpkin Walk at Twilight event at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Oct. 15. The gardens had pumpkins along the walkways and on ledges throughout the park. The park also had music, face painting and other events in the park and in the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center. The park opened workshops for pumpkin carving to the public bet ween Oct. 12-14.
More than 500 people came to the workshops. This added to the collection of pumpkins the park already had for the event, which gave them a total of more than 1,500 pumpkins. The Ford Nature Center and pumpkin artist Ron Roberts had displays in the Kidston Pavilion overlooking Lake Glacier. The Ford Nature Center had a “Creatures of the Night“ exhibit, where they showed pictures, skins and taxidermy of different animals. Roberts had a set up of some of his extremely detailed pumpkin carvings for his display.
J.D. Eicher sang and played guitar in the gazebo for the walkers. His music could be heard all along the pumpkin paths. The park also had events inside the Davis Center. The K rav it z’s Ga rden Ca fé had cookies and hot dogs for sale and gave away free apple cider. In the basement, they had a panel from different people and organizations. The panel included the Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society, Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley, the Garden District Neighborhood, Men’s Garden Club of
Youngstown, zoologist and bug enthusiast Jim Smolka, artist Jim Green and author Hugh Earnhart. The two rooms in the basement also were the locations for events. Jeanne Rees and her daughters had a face painting area in one room and the other room had a place for children to decorate small pumpkins. Mill Creek Metroparks has run the event for 12 years. The walk has evolved over the years, including the additions of Jim Smolka four years ago and Ron Roberts two years ago.

Most crafty people that came to the Crafting 101 event in the Austintown library go to the other crafting events the library hosts. Certain tools the patrons had not seen before, such as the library’s crafting scissors that come in different designs.

Pumpkin winners Boardman Township Park thanks all the participants who carved pumpkins for its Pumpkin Carve Out Contest. The pumpkins are on display at the Park through Oct. 31. This year’s winners were, in the preschool division - Aris Lee Garrett (first place), Issa Rafeedie (second place); kindergarten through fourthgrade division - Hunter Davanzo (first place), Spencer Baulo (second place); fifth- through eighth-grade division - Ava Davanzo (first place), Louie Bayo (second place); and ninth-grade through adult - Emily Rutledge and Anne Rutledge (tied for first place) and Amy Rigby (second place). Boardman Park thanks the following local businesses who donated prizes and their time: Advanced America, Armstrong, Bare Root Landscaping, Boardman Fire Department, Boardman Bounce, Burgan Real Estate, Camelot Lanes, Chick-Fil-A, Coaches (Boardman), Dairy Queen (Boardman), Dunkin’ Donuts (Boardman-Canfield Road and Struthers Locations), Eat’n Park, Elite Little Talents Daycare, Home Savings Bank, iHeart Media, Italian Village Pizza, Little Paws Apparel, Pepsi, Pizza Joe’s (Boardman), Primanti Brothers, Quaker Steak and Lube, Sarah’s Cleaning, Sport Clips, State Farm Paul Gillern Agent, Tinseltown7, Walmart and Western and Southern Life.
The Austintown library hosted an introductory class for crafting in their meeting room on Sept. 26. The table pictured included adhesives and different types of hole punchers. Librarians Cindy Mawhinney and Lindsay Platt led the event. Mawhinney has a monthly “Stamping with Cindy” event, and Platt runs a paper crafting activity monthly.

The event had 22 stations with different equipment for those present to use and learn. Most of the patron knew the equipment, but some found new, interesting tools.
Austintown library offered a class designed for beginners at paper crafting in their meeting room on Sept. 26. Librarians Cindy Mawhinney and Lindsay Platt placed 22 different crafting stations on tables in their meeting room. The tools ranged from beginner’s tools, such as a hole puncher, to more advanced tools such as the embossing heat gun. Pat rons of Mawhinney’s “Stamping with Cindy“ program and Platt’s “Paper Crafting Corner“ came to the event despite knowing most of the equipment. One participant who does not regular either of their classes did
show up and learned about a few tools she had not used. Though many patrons had worked with the equipment before, they still found new tools to use. The librarians had brought some of their own tools from home and demonstrated how to use them, such as a paper cutting board that could make various shapes. One person who frequents Platt’s class said she loved “the scissors because of all the different designs,“ as opposed to a straight or zigzag cut. Most of the people at the event walked freely between stations. Platt walked around and helped anyone who wanted it. Mawhinney held demonstrations of different tools at the top of the room.
Book club discusses page turners at the library by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Page Turners book club met in Austintown library on Sept. 20 to discuss the books they had recently read.
Austintown library’s Page Turners book club met in the library’s meeting room on Sept. 20. The Page Turners all read different stories of various genres, as opposed to some of the library’s other clubs that have more structure, such as the Tea and Mystery book club that reads different mystery novels or the Chapter Chat who all read the same novel together. The group discussed whatever they happened to read that month, which included the authors Adriana Trigiani, Sue Grafton, Carole Nelson Douglas
and Louise Penny this month. The members of the club either recommended or did not recommend books to each other. The club used humor throughout their conversations. Some talked about liking silly books with absurd concepts. Others used their wit to slam some novels or authors. Because the conversations are based on stories, the group made a couple literature-based jokes, such as a member saying Louise Penny’s novel made “Waiting for Godot“ look action-packed. Librarian Starr Jones led this month’s discussion, but Andrea Zupcsan usually heads the book club. The group will meet next on Oct. 18.

Main Library opens Career and Job Center by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Main library continues to strive to meet the community’s needs as they plan to open a Career and Job Center on their second floor. Librarian Judy Jones offered a presentation on the new program in the new room on Sept. 12. The room includes an interactive whiteboard, nine computers and a conference room in the back. The space will be made public in October. The library began working on the center after Gov. John Kasich created a workforce initiative. They want to make a more concerted effort to help the community. The program will keep others up-to-date with the current job climate and practices. These practices include the most efficient and appealing technique to make a resume and the best ways to write a cover letter. Jones also studies to become a trained Career Development Facilitator. The area will offer a number of opportunities for various people. People changing jobs or who have been out of work can get help for navigating through online applications. Those looking to start their careers
will be able to receive critiques on their resumes and cover letters. The staff will give mock interviews for those who need it. The library will help with education as well. They will prepare adults for a GED test. Students heading to college can also stop by to get assistance from the library. The Career and Jobs Center will work heavily with online databases, such as Ohio Means Jobs. They have another subscription with the Job and Career Accelerator, which can be accessed from the library or at home. Anyone with an active PLYMC library card can log in and use the site. The library includes similar sites on their website in the “Career Resources“ section. They will also help the public work on Indeed, Monster and LinkedIn. The program will begin giving one-on-one appointments starting in October. Librarians Jones, Sara Churchill and Sturart Gibbs will be the main staff for the Career and Jobs Center. The library will implement the program slowly and adapt to the needs of the community. Librarian Janet Loew said that the best thing for someone interested would be to contact one of the librarians to set up a time.
