New skilled nursing and rehabilitation allows residents to age in place Special to The Vindicator The new skilled nursing and rehabilitation center at Shepherd of the Valley’s Poland community is an important change for many of their residents. The addition means they are able to age in place without having to leave their home. “For many years we talked about building a nursing facility on our campus for our residents. There were times when an independent resident had a fall and would have to complete rehabilitation at a nursing home and they would ask why we didn’t provide skilled nursing services here,” Poland’s Associate Director Kelly Stansloski said. Initial talk of building the center started more than ten years ago. The project had been tabled several times but was reinitiated and Shepherd’s Board
of Directors approved a capital project to offer 32 short term rehab beds in addition to the current assisted and independent living options at the Poland community. Shepherd broke ground on the center in March of 2016. “We developed an ad hoc committee with our board of directors to discuss the future direction of Shepherd of the Valley. We are committed to person-centered care and have decided that moving forward, all of our campuses need to offer the full continuum of care to accommodate our resident’s needs as they age in place,” Shepherd’s Executive Director Richard Limongi, LNHA said. New therapy suite offers residents aquatic therapy Special to The Vindicator Shepherd of the Valley built their new skilled nursing and rehabilitation center with therapy in mind. The $7 million dollar expansion resulted in a 24,645 square foot facility and a 1,964 square foot therapy suite. The suite is outfitted with a full kitchen and bathroom, a therapy gym with cardio equipment and parallel bars and a heated pool with treadmill capabilities. “It was important for us to make sure residents could maximize their progress with therapy. We wanted to make sure we had enough space, the proper equipment and diagnosis-specific programs in place,” Shepherd’s Executive Director, Rich Limongi said. Shepherd of the Valley has partnered with Blue Sky Therapy of Canfield to provide therapy services. Blue Sky currently provides physical, occupational and speech therapy at Shepherd’s other three communities. Blue Sky has had great success implementing therapy programming specific to cardiac dis-
ease, pulmonary disease, incontinence, balance disorders, total hip and knee arthroplasties and dementia in Boardman, Howland and Niles. They are excited to launch these programs at Poland as well. Poland will be the first Shepherd community to offer aquatic therapy. Blue Sky will create Shepherd’s aquatic therapy program. Currently, Blue Sky has an outpatient aquatic program in Warren and Naples Florida, as well as several inpatient aquatic centers throughout southwestern Ohio. “Aquatic therapy can be beneficial to residents with many different diagnoses. Our program will focus on patients with cardiopulmonary, neurologic and orthopedic diseases. We will also work with residents who are suffering from the effects of the aging process such as pain, joint stiffness and trouble with mobility,” said Kathy Boyarko, Blue Sky Therapy’s Clinical Specialist. “The underwater treadmill is a real advantage when trying to work on making changes to the gait pattern on a patient who has pain and poor balance when walking on land. The buoyancy of the water unloads the joints and enable them to move more freely without the stress and pain.” Aquatic therapy has been shown to increase strength, balance, postural stability and tolerance for physical activity in residents who might not do well with

traditional therapy. Aquatic therapy has also been shown to decrease joint stiffness, pain and swelling. “There were residents that were not reaching their full potential with traditional physical and occupational therapy programs. We knew they would benefit from a different approach and were happy to hear that aquatic therapy was a viable option with good results. We are excited to launch this program at the Poland community,” Limongi said. The new facility is hoping to begin admitting residents by March 1. Initially, they will only be providing aquatic therapy as an inpatient service.

vices such as home health, private duty assistance and hospices services are available to residents who may need extra services. “We have worked with many residents who needed nursing care and therapy in their home setting. We are happy to be able to provide these services to keep them safe and healthy in their home. There are times when it is necessary for a resident to have around the clock nursing care in an inpatient setting. The addition of the skilled nursing unit will provide peace of mind for residents needing that extra care,” said Kris Siciliano, Director of At Home with Shepherd, Shepherd of the Valley’s home health agency. The committee put special emphasis on patient-centered care when developing the plans. The building has three neighborhoods, all with private rooms and private full bathrooms. The common areas were designed with residents in mind and include an outdoor patio and a happy hour lounge.
“Our staff already excels at giving compassionate care. We wanted to make sure we considered residents’ lifestyle and gave them options that were comfortable while creating a memorable social experience. ” Limongi said. Shepherd of the Valley worked with Howland architecture firm Baker, Bednar, Snyder and Associates. DeSalvo Construction of Hubbard was the contractor. The original plan had a construction time line of 12 months. The project was completed in 9 months. Shepherd of the Valley is hosting a Grand Opening Celebration for the public on Sunday, February 12 from 12:00pm- 3:00pm. The community is located at 301 W Western Reserve Road, Poland, Ohio 44514. Refreshments will be served and tours will be given. “I am excited for the community to experience our Poland campus. So often I hear people speak about nursing homes in a negative light and our residents reinforce that it doesn’t have to be that way. Aging can be fun and exciting, even with some unexpected health concerns along the way. I am happy to see Shepherd embrace that concept, “ Stansloski said.

Special to The Vindicator Shepherd of the Valley is seeking direct care staff for the skilled nursing center at their Poland location. Both nurses and aides are needed to care for the residents at the new building. “We are trying some new things with scheduling for our Poland community. Direct care staff will have 12 hour shifts and will be able to self-schedule. We believe this will make a more flexible work environment for employees,” said Pam Hall, Shepherd’s Director of Human Resources. While some positions have already been filled, Shepherd is still looking for additional staff to start in the month of March. Hall said most of the management roles were filled by promoting existing staff. “It is important to us that our employees have the opportunity to grow at Shepherd of the Valley. We want to provide opportunities for advancement within our work force,” Hall said. Amanda Tuscano started at Shepherd of the Valley in 2001 as a dietary aide. She had recently graduated high school and was working while going to Youngstown State University. Tuscano became a nurse’s aide and began providing care to residents. In 2005, she graduated with her nursing degree and became a weekend RN supervisor. In 2006, she was promoted to MDS nurse. Six years later, she became the restorative nurse. In 2014, she became the assistant director of nursing at Shepherd’s Niles community. Tuscano was named Shepherd of the
