Discover Historic Corolla Park
W
ith its wide open green spaces and scenic views, Historic Corolla Park is the heart of Currituck County in Northeastern North Carolina. It’s a great place to take in a seasonal event or simply take a walk, and is home to three unique landmarks — The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Whalehead in Historic Corolla and the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education. Outdoor activities such as fishing, crabbing and kayaking the Currituck Sound are welcomed, as are bicycles, kites and leashed pets.
'LVFRYHU WKH &XUULWXFN 2%;
Here are a few sites you’ll want to take in while visiting Historic Corolla Park: Whalehead in Historic Corolla Whalehead in Historic Corolla is a 1920s era Art Nouveau architectural masterpiece and the centerpiece of what has now come to be called Historic Corolla Park. Whalehead’s intriguing past is steeped in the 1920s lifestyle of its patriarch and matriarch, Edward Collins Knight Jr. and his wife, Marie Louise Lebel Bonat Knight. The Knights shared a passion for waterfowl hunting, so when Mrs. Knight was not allowed membership into the all-male hunt clubs, her husband had the majestic 21,000-square-foot “mansion by the sea” constructed for his bride. Tours and exhibits are offered daily. The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education has an 8,000-gallon aquarium, models of hunting and fishing boats, a duck blind, a million-dollar decoy collection, an auditorium, and what many visitors especially like — what’s waiting outside. The Center sits between the ocean and the Currituck Sound, water that helped put the area on the map for waterfowl hunting at the turn of the 20th century to the present day. Offering a well-rounded bounty of both wildlife and history, visit and enjoy crabbing off the dock, learn how to fish or explore the maritime history of the area.
Treasures are found in Historic The Currituck Beach Lighthouse This red-brick lighthouse towers above the northern Outer Banks landscape of Historic Corolla Park. Visitors can climb the winding staircase, 220 steps in all, to the top of the lighthouse for a panoramic view of Currituck Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Outer Banks. Inside the lighthouse, at the base and on the first two landings, there are museum-quality lighthouse exhibits. On the way up or down, stop to learn about the history of coastal lighthouses, the Fresnel lens, shipwrecks and the lighthouse keepers. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is known as a first order lighthouse, which means it has the largest of seven Fresnel lens sizes. With a 20-second flash cycle (on for 3 seconds, off for 17 seconds), the light can be seen for 18 nautical miles. The distinctive sequence enables the lighthouse not only to warn mariners but also to help identify their locations. Like the other lighthouses on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, this one still serves as an aid to navigation. The beacon comes on automatically every evening at dusk and ceases at dawn. To distinguish the Currituck Beach Lighthouse from other regional lighthouses, its exterior was left unpainted and gives today’s visitor a sense of the multitude of bricks used to form the structure.
&RUROOD 9LOODJH on the Currituck Outer Banks Nestled Away Next To Historic Corolla Park you’ll find a place unlike any other; Historic Corolla Village is a pedestrian experience with many significant landmarks within walking distance of one another. Walk down the narrow roads and pause to listen, read the signage about the buildings or go inside. Coming to these landmarks helps visitors connect to the original and current inhabitants. While the Village, as locals call it, has food and shopping, it’s far from a shopping center. All the shop owners know and easily share their unique stories. What they sell gives you a sense of place as well as community and reflects a simpler time. Unique Shopping Stately live oak trees line narrow streets and unpaved roads where homes dating from the late 19th to early 20th century are now shops and businesses supplying everything from books to barbecue to the latest fashion. Wild Horse Museum and Store Corolla Village is home to the Corolla Wild Horse Museum and Corolla Wild Horse Fund, a non-profit organization that raises funds to protect Currituck’s wild Spanish mustangs. The museum offers fun and educational activities for children during the summer months. There is no admission fee and only nominal fees for children’s programs. Corolla Schoolhouse Corolla’s two-room historic schoolhouse, built in the late 1800s to serve the children of lighthouse keepers and surfmen, reopened in 2012 as the first charter school on the Outer Banks, and serves 16 children in grades K-6.

We all know the southern stretch of N.C. 12 is breathtakingly beautiful, but now it’s official. It’s been designated as a National Scenic Byway, one of four national scenic byways in the state, since 2009, and this year 130 new signs mark the route as the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway. BUILDING A BRIDGE BRING THE MUSIC TO US We love our local musicians. But we also like musicians “from off,” and it goes without saying that we don’t like to leave the Outer Banks unless we have to. So we like it when musicians like Dawes (above) come to us. The band is playing at Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island on July 3. Go to thelostcolony.org for tickets. Other opportunities to see big-name musicians on the OBX include Outer Banks Bluegrass Island Festival in September and the Mustang Music Festival and the Duck Jazz Festival in October. All those details are easily found online.

Finally, good bridge news for Hatteras Island. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Herbert C. Bonner Bridge was held on March 8 and work has begun. The $246 million bridge is expected to open to traffic in the fall of 2018 and last 100 years. Most of the 53-yearold existing bridge will be removed (a portion will become an offshore reef) by September of 2019. About 1,000 feet of the old bridge will remain in place for sightseers and anglers. To see a video rendering of the new bridge go to ncdot. gov/projects/bonnerbridgereplace/

DITCHING PLASTIC Coastal residents and visitors are waking up to the fact that plastic in the ocean and waterways sucks. Plastic is one of the major sources of ocean pollution and is responsible for the deaths of millions of seabirds and hundreds of thousands of marine animals every year. There are many movements afoot to reduce the amount of plastic in in the ocean (see plasticoceanproject.org), and we can all do our part by recycling, picking up trash and learning how to reduce the amount of plastic we use; lifewithouthplastic.com is a good place to start.

COROLLA VILLAGE Here’s how we’d do a day in this far-flung pocket of hip. Start with vinyasa at Outer Banks Yoga, immediately followed by an organic Wild Horse juice and Energizer pitaya bowl at The Juice Jar, enjoyed on the lawn in the sun. Next stop a massage and a facial at Lovie’s Spa and Salon, housed in a restored old-school home. We’d spend an hour in Island Bookstore, pop in and out of a few shops, stroll through the Village Garden and pet the free-ranging chickens, grab a sandwich at Corolla Village Bar-B-Que, and take an SUP tour in Currituck Sound with the local guides at Coastal Explorations. By then the Corolla Beer Garden would be calling our names. We’d hide out under the live oaks in a funky wooden chair, drink something crafty and wait for the live music to start. All this, no car necessary.

Critters became The Tills. “In fact,” Harrison says, “my proudest moment may have been when The Critters band from the ’60s told us to knock it off … because after we started the band we realized the name was stolen and I remember saying, ‘Let’s just keep using it until they tell us to stop.’ I figured if a band that had hit songs in the 60s was feeling threatened by us, it was a good sign.” In 2012 The Tills released Mixtape Vol. 1, followed by Howlin’ in 2014. They plan to release their first full-length album in mid2016. Harrison describes The Tills’ music as “slop pop,” saying, “I usually regard The Tills’ sound as the sound closest to what’s in my head, and it’s all original music.” Harrison released three solo albums simultaneously in 2015 – HH Goat, Pretty Songs for Girls and The Lone R.C.H. IV — which can be heard and purchased at theharryharrison.bandcamp.com. Harrison divides his time among Asheville, Brooklyn and the Outer Banks.
While on the Outer Banks, usually only in the summer, he performs solo and plays gigs with Hound Dogs Family Band, Yacht Dogs, Sticky Nickel, The Billy Clams and The Running Club. The Hound Dogs’ music is similar to The Tills’, he says, but with more improvisation and a bit more funk, R&B, hip-hop and soul, and more covers; the Yacht Dogs’ is like the Hound Dogs’ but smaller and with more folk/country leanings. He describes The Billy Clams as a vaudeville act. “My solo performances are just me with a guitar singing whatever songs I like best at the time,” he says. “I like doing solo performances because it feels like music therapy. The solo albums, however, delve much more deeply into experimenting with whatever genre I feel like investigating. I treat solo albums more like anthologies.” His songwriting range is vast and has elicited comparisons to Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and John Lennon. “When you hear Harry,” says friend
Chuck Larson, “you feel like you’ve just discovered new songs by the Beatles.” Combine his songwriting skills, vocal style and stage presence – “enigmatic and unpredictable,” “commands attention in the least commanding of ways” as a couple of fans described it – and the effect is mesmerizing. “If you’ve ever had the privilege of sharing a stage with HH, you know how hard it is not to get swept up by his presence, just like every audience member watching him,” says Katie Fuller, fellow Hound Dogs band member. “You can feel the great power of his presence behind his guitar. To be that close to him as he shares his words is a true gift. HH crafts lyrics that expertly say what others are afraid to say. He does not flinch from the shadows. He sheds light upon them. And you may not even realize what the hell he is saying until the 63rd time you’ve heard it. And when you do, it floors you.”
This summer you can catch him in a number of bands — Hound Dogs Family Band, Yacht Dogs, Sticky Nickel, The Running Club, The Billy Clams — or solo. A few of his regular gigs: Mondays (every other) - The Billy Clams at Wave Pizza in Duck Tuesdays - Yacht Dogs at the Jolly Roger in Kill Devil Hills Wednesdays - Yacht Dogs at Trio in Kitty Hawk Thursdays - Solo at Sweet Ts in Duck Fridays - Yacht Dogs at Roadside in Duck Saturdays - The Running Club at Eastside in Duck

cracoke in the Fifties is a book I picked up on a whim. The author’s name, Dare Wright, seemed familiar, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on why until I settled in to read the foreword. Wright, it turned out, was also the creator of a series of best-selling children’s books that began with The Lonely Doll in 1957. The Lonely Doll is a book that fascinated me while I was growing up on the Outer Banks in the ’80s. In its broadest strokes it’s a classic children’s story (Edith is a lonely doll until she meets Mr. Bear and Little Bear, and after a troublesome adventure the three promise to live happily together forever), but there’s also a slightly darker, dreamlike air of mystery that surrounds aspects of this basic narrative that’s only heightened by the richly detailed blackand-white photographs that illustrate it. It seems simplistic and yet also incredibly revealing to say that Wright told stories primarily through photographs. While there’s a certain poetry to much of her writing, I was often struck more by how suggestive her images are — to the extent that it almost seemed irrelevant whether I actually read the text. From a photograph of Edith and the bears building a sandcastle or standing at the foot of a towering Brooklyn Bridge, to one of Edith appearing to take a slow-motion tumble while climbing a patio wall, the images sprung to life like movie stills. It was likely these very qualities that captivated me when I was younger, but I found that pull was still there as an adult. Opposite page: Dare Wright arranges a photo shoot with the doll Edith on Ocracoke Island. This page: top, At Sliver Lake, Wright sets up the famous boat scene in Holiday in which Edith and Little Bear drift out to sea. Bottom, Wright’s first and last books, respectively. Doll was published in 1957, while Ocracoke was published posthumously a decade ago.

HISTORY
In my experience, children rarely, if ever, think much about the authors of their favorite books. In many ways, our initial allegiances are to the characters, and Edith was certainly one of my first loves. Until I realized that Wright’s only book intended for an adult audience celebrated her deep, decades-long connection with the Outer Banks, Wright had seemed — if not exactly fictional — not quite as real as her creations had been to my younger self. But reality is often much more complicated than fiction, as Wright perhaps says best in the opening pages of Ocracoke. “Look, then,” she implores, “at these photographs of the island of Ocracoke — partly as it is, partly how it was, entirely as it appeared to me.” Like the books in The Lonely Doll series, Ocracoke is filled with her arresting black-and-white photographs, depicting everything from images of the Ocracoke Lighthouse and the island’s picket fences to the old Wahab Village Hotel, the once-wild Ocracoke ponies during penning season, and portrait after portrait of the local people who played a large part in making Wright feel at home there. After tracking down Brook Ashley, Wright’s godchild and heir to her estate, I began piecing together a larger narrative of Wright’s life. Born Alice Dare Wright in 1914, she trained as an actress in New York City and was an accomplished model and fashion photographer before she turned to children’s books. She was also a deeply private person who appeared to be most comfortable behind rather than in front of the camera — a fact that might surprise those familiar with Wright’s large personal collection of glamorous self-portraits. After Wright’s parents separated, her brother went to live with their father, and their mother, Edie, raised Wright as an only child. A celebrated professional painter herself, Edie encouraged Wright’s creativity, and the two remained especially close throughout their lives. In addition to pursuing a number of artistic projects, one of Wright and her mother’s shared pleasures was traveling. In 1947 — 10 years before The Lonely Doll was first published — Donald Seawell, Ashley’s father and a native North Carolinian, introduced them to Ocracoke, thinking they would relish the natural beauty and the seclusion the island had to offer. They did. From that year on they spent almost every summer there until 1969. Not only did Wright and her mother enjoy exploring the untamed nooks of Ocracoke, Edith and the bears did too. Shortly after their annual Ocracoke trips began, Wright came across her childhood felt-covered Lenci doll that her mother had bought her decades ear-

lier for $12.50 (a wildly extravagant expense at the time). Wright was inspired to remake the doll until it bore an uncanny resemblance to herself, complete with a platinum blonde wig, pierced ears and hand-sewn outfits. Wright also found two companion teddy bears that suited her imagination, and started staging a number of elaborate shoots on Ocracoke in the early ’50s with Edith and the bears. Though Wright began taking these photographs purely for the joy of creating something new, many of them went into a miniature mockup that eventually became The Lonely Doll. During this period, Wright also made a second mini-mockup on Ocracoke, “The Barefoot Island,” which would become Holiday for Edith and the Bears, the first follow-up in her Lonely Doll series. Thinking the mockups had potential, Seawell showed them to members of a private New York club, attracting the interest of several publishers. In 1957 Doubleday published The Lonely Doll and, the next year, Holiday, both to widespread acclaim. The Lonely Doll made The New York Times Best Sellers list for children’s books alongside Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat, and more than a half century later The Guardian named it one of the 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books of all time. Over nearly two more decades, Wright published 19 books, 10 of which feature Edith and the bears. I hadn’t realized it before, but the final version of The Lonely Doll still includes images of Edith and the bears fishing and playing on the beach in Ocracoke, while Holiday was shot entirely on the island. Two of Wright’s other books, Look at a Gull and her only young-adult book, Lona, were also partially shot on Ocracoke, not to mention her 20th book, which was published posthumously 10 years ago, Ocracoke in the Fifties. Wright passed away in 2001, leaving a legacy of stories that generations of children continue to discover, or, like me, continue to rediscover and pass down to the other young readers in our lives. It seems fitting, then, to let Wright have the final word. When Edith and the Bears’ vacation comes to an end in Holiday, Edith doesn’t want to put her shoes back on and bemoans the fact that they have to leave. Though they can’t stay forever, as Little Bear suggests, Mr. Bear promises they can return to the island someday. In this happily ever after, there will always be a next time. “And so they sailed away,” Wright writes, prompting Little Bear to ask, “‘How long is it ’till next time?’”
This page: These two Ocracoke Island photos are rare examples of Wright using color film for self-portraits. She took thousands of self-portraits during her lifetime, but most were shot in black and white.
