HAZARD BOARD HEAVY DUTY BRACKET KIT

Hazard Board Heavy Duty Brackets are designed to mitigate vehicle windscreen spearing from road signs. Currently signs installed parallel to the roadway, including sign stiffeners, present a spearing risk to vehicles that impact them end on. Fatal incidents have occurred in Australia where errant vehicles have collided with sight boards causing the sign and stiffener rails to spear through the vehicles windscreen. To prevent a sign end from impacting the windscreen, TMR Queensland has developed and tested a new design and issued Standard Drawing 1452. This mitigates the risk of sight board sign spearing by strengthening the post connections with heavy duty clamps, ensuring the sign is pulled down with the post on impact, rather than sliding off the post.

Product Catalogue 19.1

To prevent the M10 triobular locking bolts from wearing into the aluminium poles and causing fracture points, the patented stainless steel transition shoe was developed. The stainless steel transition shoe fits between the aluminium pole wall and M10 triobular locking bolts, to prevent wear and eliminate any electrolysis action between the M10 triobular locking bolts and aluminium pole. The innovative stainless steel transition shoe MUST be placed between the pole and locking bolts and tightened evenly between 10 and 12 Nm.

POLE RESTRAINT DEVICE

POLE RESTRAINT DEVICE TO SUIT FRANGIBLE ALUMINIUM POLES On impact, the Signfix frangible pole is designed to tear and break away at the sleeve top and in some instances, could deflect into the carriageway. The pole restraint device will secure the base of the pole close to the sleeve top after the pole has separated from the sleeve, rather like an ankle tap. The restraint device is made from a heavy-duty bracket, clamped to the pole 100mm above the sleeve top. Heavy duty galvanised chain is attached to the bracket and connects the lower locking bolt located at the sleeve top. The chain length can vary depending on the pole diameter. To ensure the breakaway process remains consistent a 10mm hole must be drilled on site through the pole 15mm above the sleeve top, with the locking bolts facing oncoming traffic. The hole needs the provided plug to be used to reduce water ingress. The restraint device fits within the pole bracket attached to the pole before securing the pole in the sleeve. Trilobular locking bolts must be tightened from 10 – 12 Nm. To further reduce damage or injury, Signfix recommends the device is fitted to all Signfix frangible poles, particularly in high pedestrian and traffic areas.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

ALUMINIUM FRANGIBLE SIGN SUPPORT SYSTEM The Signfix Aluminium frangible sign support system is approved and used extensively by Transit New Zealand, VicRoads, Transport SA, RMS, Main Roads WA, Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, Tasmanian Department of State Growth, and NT Department of Infrastructure. Signfix commissioned the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW to carry out a series of crash tests at the RTA’s Crash-Lab in Sydney.

“The test results successfully proved that pole sizes 50, 65, 80, 90 & 100mm NB fell within the frangibility guidelines of the NCHRP-350 standard for open road conditions.”

The test results successfully proved that pole sizes 50, 65, 80, 90 & 100mm NB fell within the frangibility guidelines of the NCHRP-350 standard for open road conditions. The patented system works in conjunction with a purpose made ground sleeve designed to be a snug fit between pole and socket. Depending on the pole diameter, sleeves can be supplied from 300mm to 1m lengths. Sleeves are set in concrete foundations designed to meet local engineering requirements. The sleeve top acts as the shear point and combined with the molecular structure of the alloy will, under sudden impact, bend the pole at the point of impact and will ultimately shear and breakaway at the socket top. The pole flutes are designed to further assist in the breakaway process by reducing the external surface area of the pole. Both pole and sleeve are manufactured from high strength marine grade alloy with a typical yield strength of 240 MPa. This alloy has good age hardening qualities and will continue to strengthen over time. For further technical information consult the crash test report, structural information and installation guide available from Signfix. Patent Number 2012101052 applies 12

POLE & SLEEVE INSTALLATION

RECOMMENDED INSTALLATION FOR ALUMINIUM FRANGIBLE POLES Foundations should be excavated to the required depth retaining a minimum diameter of 400mm. Remove all loose debris before pouring concrete. When setting out and pouring concrete on multi pole sites, install kerb side socket first. The sleeve must be centralised in the hole and set on a concrete base ensuring the sleeve top is between 50 – 90mm above ground level. Place sleeve with the locking bolts facing the oncoming traffic. Using only wet concrete, carefully pour around the sleeve up to ground level. It is important to ensure that during the final pour the sleeve remains perpendicular by using a spirit level across the sleeve top with sleeve remaining in the centre of the foundation.

When the kerbside sleeve is in place and the site is level, repeat the process with the remaining sleeves. Be careful to ensure that the top of each remaining sleeve is level and perpendicular with the kerbside sleeve. When the concrete is hardened, generally 24 hours, the poles are placed in the sleeves and firmly secured using the security bolts and transition wear shoe provided. When all sleeves are installed correctly, and the poles are equal length, the pole top should be level ready to install the sign. For sloping sites, install sleeves 50 – 90mm above ground. The difference in the sleeve levels should be compensated for when calculating the pole lengths to ensure pole tops are level.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION › For adequate foundation strength use concrete of not less than 28mpa. › To ensure that frangibility works within the requirements of NCHRP-350, all pole sizes 50NB and above must be installed using a matching sleeve. All sleeves must be fully encased using wet premixed concrete. › Check the correct pole size and number of poles required for each installation by referring to the Signfix wind loading charts on pages 15 – 17. Charts are also available online at www.signfix.com.au. › Obtain all foundation details from a local engineer before the commencement of any installation. › To prevent difficulty in removing the security bolt from a damaged or bent pole, position sleeves with the locking device facing oncoming traffic. › The stainless steel transition shoe must be placed between the pole and locking bolts and tightened evenly between 10 & 12 Nm. › Recommended use of Signfix Poly Caps to prevent water ingress. › Restraint device can be fit to poles to improve safety in high volume vehicle/pedestrian areas.
