WELCOME TO THE 2015 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
To all fellow bowlers. Firstly I would like to thank all of my colleagues on the organising committee, without their hard work the competition would not be possible, and in particular a special thanks goes to my Assistant National Director Pete Bonsor who has led the committee this year.
Thanks goes to the committees, owners and controllers of both venues San Luis and Quesada for allowing their greens to be used for the Nationals.
Aspecial thanks in advance to the CBUMAfor their appointment of umpires at the venues.
Agreat deal of gratitude goes to the companies that have sponsored this years Nationals, in these difficult financial times their support is greatly received.
Ahuge thank you to the Leader newspaper for their continued support in the form of the brochure, and the support they give Spanish Bowls in general.
Now I thank all of you, the competitors in the National Championships of 2015, enjoy your tournament, play fairly with a smile on your faces, in the sport that means so much to all of us.

SPANISH NATIONAL LAWNBOWLSCHAMPIONSHIPS 2015
The Spanish National Championship Committee
I came to live in Spain in 2004,and joined Quesada Bowls Club, previous to this I bowled in both Scotland and England for many years and played at County level in both countries.
In 2005 I successfully completed trials and became a member of the Spanish International squad, where I represented my adopted country on many occasions. In the early part of 2010 I resigned from the International scene, and after 30 years of bowling decided to put something back to a sport that has been good to me.I therefore applied and was successful in being appointed the National Director of Bowls in Spain.
In this position I now chair the National Championships committee, and may I take this opportunity to wish all competitors a successful and enjoyable tournament.
In 2013 I won my first National Title, the National Triples. Many thanks to my partners Bill Pain and Pete Bonsor.
My bowling career started in the U.K.in 1984. Over the next 20 years I played to a high standard winning both indoor and outdoor club and county titles.
In 2002 I represented Bedfordshire in the pairs and rinks at the Mens National Championships at Worthing.
We bought a holiday apartment in Spain in October 2005 visiting during the winter months. On moving to Quesada in 2007 I joined the bowls club.In 2011 I was a winner in the National Rinks and finalist in the National Triples. The following year,2012,I was a winner in the National Triples and in 2013 the Runner Up in the National Singles. In 2014 I was again a winnerin the national Rinks and was also asked to represent Spain in the National Squad.
I enjoy my bowls and try to give new bowlers encouragement to carry on after coaching lessons. Wishing all competitors a good tournament.
I began my bowling career in 1987 in the U.K.,after many years as a Netballer. As Ladies’ Club Captain I was successful in leading our club to two League Championships and also winning a Singles Championship on grass.
On retiring to Spain in 2002 with my husband Ken,we joined Quesada Bowls Club, where we both served on the Committee.I have served both as Captain and Secretary and I have been the Federation Representative, which has led me,to become Treasurer of Lawn Bowls Spain and currently Secretary and Treasurer of this year’s Spanish Nationals. In 2011 I qualified as an Instructor under the National Coaching Scheme.
I am privileged to have won the club Ladies Singles title and in both 2011 and 2013 I was delighted to win the Spanish Nationals as a skip of the Ladies Rinks for the 2nd time in 2013. Bowls has brought me many happy hours. It is a great sport to keep fit and enjoy the company of many good friends.
My father was a good bowler which is really what got me interested in the sport and he was delighted when Derek and I decided to take up the game.We didn’t let him down! I have held club and county committee positions, being Indoor County President for Hertfordshire 1996/97.I followed this by being Herts Indoor Ladies Secretary for six years.
During 1998 – 2004 I played in the Ladies National Championships at Leamington in singles, pairs, rinks, Champion of Champions and club events.
Since playing in Spain I have won several club competitions and a National title in the rinks in 2011.
Good luck to everybody at the National Championships this year.
Bowls has been a part of my life since I was 8 years old,my whole family played, coached and mentored me to be able to play for Nottinghamshire County U25's when I was 15years old,I progressed to the Senior team the following Year and won several County Competitions including the County 4 Bowl Singles and several National team Titles.
Lisa and I moved to Spain in 2005 when I joined Greenlands B.C.
I was selected to join the Spanish Squad,an honour I could not refuse. In 2008 & 2009 I travelled to Australia to play for Spain in the World Singles (Indoor) and after finishing 3rd winning the Bronze Medal I was offered employment at a neighbouring club as their Bowls Coordinator.
3 Years Later we returned to Spain to be with our first Granddaughter "Silesia".Currently playing for Quesada I have once again enjoyed success both with the club & individually winning the 2014 National Singles .
I have lived in Spain for nearly 28 years, the first 9 in the Malaga Province, and the rest in the Torrevieja area. I joined Greenlands in 2000,where I was a member for 11 years, during which time I served as Captain for nearly 4 years.
In 2010 I was invited to be the Delegate for Lawn Bowls on the Federación de Bolos de la Comunidad Valenciana (FBCV),a position which I still hold.
In 2011 I moved to San Miguel, where I thought I could have a rest from Committee responsibility, but in a short time I was elected Captain,a position I still hold 3 years later!
In 2014 I was appointed as the representative for our Sport on the Governing Board of the Federación Española de Bolos(FEB),a task which involves a lot of time and travelling, partly due to the financial restraints that everybody, but particularly the FEB,are experiencing. This is my 9th year on this Committee, and I still get satisfaction in being able to give something in return to the Sport which has given me such pleasure over the years, and for all the good friends I have made.

WORLD SINGLES CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
The World Singles Champion of Champions tournament took place from 24th to 29th November 2014 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Have you ever bowled on a glass topped table with the wind behind? Boy, were those greens slick! 26 countries were represented in the competition: Argentina, Australia, Botswana, Canada, China, Cook Islands, England, Fiji, Hong Kong China, Japan, Malaysia, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, Philippines, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Turkey, United States, Wales and Zimbabwe. This was the first time that Argentina had sent a representative and so it was nice to be able to chat to him in Spanish as his English was not the best. He brought his daughter with him who was fluent so that helped!
There were 18 women and 23 men taking part. I was in Section 2 with 8 other ladies and my results were as follows: I won my game against Canada 11-3 & 12-5 and also against the Philippines 10-6, 4-8 and 3-2 in a close tie break. I then played a very well-known competitor from Fiji (Litia Tikoisuva) and lost 7-5, 6-9 and 1-2 in a tie break. I was holding game and Litia sent a
wood down that she hated and, lo and behold, it ricocheted in and took the jack into the ditch and she won the second set. Very tight tie break too. Then I got into a rhythm of a loss, win, loss, win, loss with the results as follows: Norfolk Island 2-12 & 9-10, Hong Kong China 7-6 & 12-3, New Zealand 4-10 & 5-15 (really tough against a home player), Botswana 11-7, 6-7 & 3-1 in a tie break and then against the eventual Silver Medallist Saskia Schaft from Holland I had a real game of two halves with a result of 3-16, 12-4 and 0-4 in a tie break.
I played 8 games in all and, as I said, some of the results were very close. I finished 6th in my section and 11th overall. The finals were really great to watch and Scotland won both the ladiesíand the gentís titles ñ a first in the competition. It was a great opportunity and a really enjoyable, extremely well organised event which I would highly recommend ñ even though it will cost you a pretty penny if it is the other side of the world!

KNOW THE LA KNOW THE LA WS WS
As of the 31st March 2015 the Crystal Mark version 2 law book will be replaced by Crystal Mark 3. Every four Years World bowls get together and vote in new Laws and amendments 2014 was one of those years and as a result new law books were printed "CM3". Along with the new laws each Member National Authority is allowed to produce their own Domestic Regulations.
Everyone should take the time to make themselves aware of all the laws of the sport especially the
Domestic Regulations. Other than some new wording and complete re-numbering of the laws, here is a brief look at a couple of the changes affecting Lawn Bowls in Spain.
FOOTFAULTING
Law 20.1 has changed to 7.1 And now states that before delivery the player must be standing on the mat with all or part of at least one foot on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or bowl, the player must have all or part of one foot on or above the mat.
In Domestic Regulations Spain has adopted - Law 40.1.9 to allow the skip to transfer their duty of keeping the scorecard, however if transferred the player in the same positions must keep the card i.e. both number twos or both leads if they cannot agree the skips must keep the card.
On reading the new book you will also find subtle changes to some laws full details of which can be found at www.ebua.org.uk
AN IMPORTANT YEAR FOR NATIONAL BOWLS
2015 is once again an important year for the Spanish National Squad
Afterthe 4 Nations Tournament in Cyprus, which was held in March (see separate report), Lisa & Pete Bonsorfrom Quesada B.C. are heading off to Australia forthe World Cup Singles; this event is held annually at the Warilla Bowls Club in New South Wales. The competition is sets play and played indoors over 10 days. Previous squad members who have represented Spain at the World Singles have included Nick Cole, Jan Dando, Paul Brown, Lynne Metcalf, Chris Evans and Peta Rhodes and Pete Bonsor who won a Bronze medal for Spain in the 2009 competition.
2013 Spain were the Ladies Gold Medallists and together with the men, Team Bronze Medallists. Unfortunately we will not be represented in Israel due to other commit-

This yearís European Championships are to be held in Tel Aviv, Israel. At the last Europeans in
November sees the World Champion of Champions in Brisbane Australia with the 2014 Spanish Nationals winners attending; Pete Bonsor (Quesada) in the menís event and Ann Allen (Horadada) in the ladies event. Ann is not currently a member of the Spanish squad.
In 2014 Jan Dando competed in last the ladies event in New Zealand. (See her separate report).
The last competition of 2015 returns us to Cyprus for the Atlantic Championships com-
mencing 30th November for two weeks. This tournament acts as the qualification event for World Bowls 2016 and, unlike previous years, each country has the opportunity to qualify in individual disciplines, rather than as a team of 5. This should give equal opportunity for the smaller countries with very few players a chance to progress to World Bowls. The Spanish teams selected for the 2015 event are as follows:
Men
Pete Bonsor (Quesada)
Graham Cathcart (Tenerife)
Nick Cole (Javea)
Bill Pain (Quesada)
Tom Rogers (Lauro Golf)
Brian Robertson (Reserve: Mazarron)
Ladies
Lisa Bonsor (Quesada)
Debbie Colquhoun (Indalo)
Sheri Fletcher (Javea)
Lynn Greenland (Greenlands)
Peta Rhodes (Quesada)
Jan Dando (Reserve: Indalo)
After successful trials over the last few months, Jacqui Johnston of Quesada B.C. has also been accepted into the full ladies squad.

It's Your Nationals!!
Overthe last few years the numbers of entries into the National Championships has fallen, why we all ask.... Maybe it's the increased cost due to the devalued Euro Maybe it's the introduction of lowered Autonomous Federation fees
Maybe it's down to the location being South Alicante on a regular basis
Maybe it's a pure drop in participating bowlers in Spain Who Knows??
What can we do to return the numbers back towards the 1000 number?
Below are a few suggestions, some are from the committee and some have come to the committee both verbally and in writing, along with those already received, we are openly inviting federated members to give their suggestions before we meet again after this Years' Nationals with the outlook of preparing a New Format for
2016. Play the Nationals at a different time of year to include the "Swallows."
Qualify for each discipline regionally with the number of qualifiers proportional to the regions entries. Play all disciplines Round Robin guaranteeing travelling players a fixed number of games.
Allowing all federated members including regional members to enter the qualifiers and only qualifiers need to upgrade to the full amount. All correspondence will be greatly appreciated so that we can endeavour to proceed with the Nationals in 2016 in a format we can all enjoy.
All correspondence should be directed to the Nationals Committee 2015 addressed to Nationals Secretary email deidre.leeming@g.mail.com and must be received by the end of August 2015.

We all had arrived safely by the saturday, sunday practise was a surprise they had replaced there old carpet with a brand new Dales carpet only three weeks previous, this caused a bit of a problem with the carpet extremly slow certain bowls were struggling while the bowl with a biggerbias were working ok.
On the first days play Spain started really well the men winning three while only losing one,the ladies winning two games drawing one and also only losing one. Day two thats when the wheels fell off a bit the mens triples beating cyprus 17-16 plus the rink beating Israel 23-8 losing the other two games. the ladies fared worse losing all four games things could only get better. The final day things improved the men winning two drawing one
and losing one while the ladies won one beating Cyprus 22-16 losing three. So overall the mens team scored 15pts the highlight beating strong Jersey and Israel teams and with a little bit of luck would have come home with medals,as for the ladies I hope this was only a blip winning only 7pts in the process what else can you say but just put it down as a bad day at the office.
On the wednesday night Cyprus laid on a lovely gala dinner for us all and new friendships were formed,so we roll on now to the Atlantic rim back in Cyprus at the end of november and wish all our team male and female happy hunting and qualify for the world championships in New Zealand in 2016.
