Children join with veterans to remember the fallen As the custodians of Remembrance, The Royal British Legion called on the nation once again to unite in honouring the memory of the fallen, by commemorating the contribution made by British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts. As is usual here in Spain, the occasion was also used to pay homage to the many Spanish servicemen and civilians who have died or been injured, either in military service or

terrorist attacks, particularly those that occurred this year in Barcelona, Cambrils, Manchester, London and elsewhere across the Iberian Peninsula. In the Vega Baja services got underway on Friday at the Phoenix International School in San Miguel where children and staff joined with members of the Orihuela Costa RBL to pay their respects to the fallen. Accompanied by the Phoenix Band the children sang a selection of hymns and songs from the period, before extracts were read from the actual diary of Mathew Hadley, a soldier with the 38th (Welsh) Division at Mametz Woods during the First Battle of the Somme. Mathew is the Great, Great, Great Grandfather of 7-year old Harry Griffin, a pupil at the school. The extracts recalled the battle on 10 July 1916, listing many names of the 400 soldiers that were killed or injured, including his brother Reg, before they reached the wood. On Saturday morning the Armistice Day event was held by the Torrevieja RBL at La Siesta Church in Torrevieja. Packed, both inside and out, the service was attended by members of Service Associations from across the region as well as representatives of the Provincial and the city council. The RBL standards, as well as those of RAFA, RNA and RMA, were led to the church by the splendid Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. As they formed up in front of the altar the service got underway with a prayer from Father Richard Seabrook , officiating chaplain, followed by the RBL Exhortation and then, most significantly of all, the Last Post played by Ian Gibson of the JB Brass Band. The lessons were read by Branch President Gill Burden and Carol Stockwell in English while Carmen Morate the Torrevieja Councillor for International Residents and Carlos González, Director of OARI read the lessons in Spanish. After the service the standards, followed by dignitaries and wreath holders, moved to the cenotaph located in the church garden area, where the wreath laying ceremony was led by Cllr Morate. A superb carvery lunch followed for members of the RBL and their guests at the Club in Quesada. Saturday evening saw Campoverde Church take centre stage with a programme of contemplative readings and music, ‘Oh Soldier, Soldier’, presented by Mike and Pip Shail with George Piper. The event allowed the congregation the opportunity a pleasant diversion of reflective thought during the remembrance weekend, and was extremely well received by a sizeable gathering, with the retiring collection shared between the church and the RBL. Sunday morning’s focus of Remembrance was on the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras where the Orihuela Costa Branch held their annual service led by Pastor Keith Brown. The guests included the British Vice Consul Sara Munsterhjelm and the Chairman of the RBL Spain District North, Don Cubbon. They were joined by the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Ignacio Ramos, and councillors along with President of the Partdo Popular in the Province of Alicante, Damaso Aparicio and Orihuela Costa councillor for Overseas Residents Sofia Alvarez. The service was conducted by Branch Chaplain, Pastor Keith Brown. He was assisted by lay preacher Stephen Treseder. Diana Wiltshire and Branch Vice Chairman Walter Shatford read the

lessons in English while Ignacia Ramos and Francisco Morales of the Guardia Civil read in Spanish. Nicola read the Ode of Remembrance. Once again there was a moving A capella performance of ‘Bring him home’ faultlessly sung by long time RBL supporter Rebecca Holt. During the service the Phoenix Concert Band provided the music led by their MD David Last. The last post was performed by the Costa Blanca’s premier bugler Ian Gibson while the lament, ‘Lock Rannoch’, was played by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. The one major addition from last year was the performance of a small children’s choir from the Phoenix International School prior to and after the service, which received rapturous applause from the congregation numbering in excess of 500 people. Two children from the school also carried the peace candle to the altar reciting a short prayer after they had done so. The service was concluded with the National Anthems of Spain and the United Kingdom after which the ceremony then moved out to the Garden of Remembrance where the RBL, British Consul, Pilar de la Horadada Council, Orihuela and other Service Wreaths from the Royal Navy, the Royal Air force and Royal Marines Associations were laid, after which branch and members of the public added their own poppy crosses in memory of family members and lost friends. Quite what the Costa Blanca would do without the wonderful Torrevieja Pipes and Drums I really don’t know but once again, the company were magnificently turned out in Mil Palmeras in support of the RBL and the local community. Flanked by a large number of the general public the Pipes and Drums then led over a hundred and fifty members of the congregation from the church to the Mil Palmeras Olympia Restaurant where members and guests enjoyed a delightful buffet lunch. Gran Alacant and La Marina Branch of the Royal British Legion, in association with the Ayuntamiento of San Fulgencio, also held their annual Service of Remembrance on Sunday. This open-air service was held in the main square of San Fulgencio – the Plaza de Constitución. It was conducted in both Spanish and English, by a Catholic Priest, Father Jose Francisco, and Anglican Priest, Father Richard Seabrook. It was back to Campoverde for the final event of the weekend where, on Sunday evening, participants were encouraged to take along photographs of family members who had served or who were currently serving, so that they could be displayed and blessed. Once again the event was well supported and following the last post, reveille and the laying of a wreath, many of the congregation stayed behind to enjoy refreshments in the church garden. The National Service of Remembrance, also held yesterday (Sunday) at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation's dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remembrance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn. But of course Remembrance is not just about those who fought in the last two World Wars, it is also held in respect of those involved in the many other conflicts worldwide and those who are still fighting for peace and freedom even now. It is also about all of us learning from the past and resolving to make the world a better place in which to live, and with so many more children becoming involved in the event here on the Costa Blanca we are now rather more assured that the future of remembrance is in increasingly safe hands.

Woman dies after being shot 5 times as she collected her child from school The mayor, Rubén Alfaro, was joined at the protest by politicians from across the Province

A

woman has died after being shot by her partner 5 times while collecting her 4 year old boy from school. The incident occurred on Wednesday just after 5pm outside del colegio Santo Negro de Elda. The assailant then attempted to flee the scene in the woman’s car but he embedded it into a school fence, at which point he turned the gun on himself. It was just after five in the afternoon as dozens of parents and mothers waited at the doors of the Santo Negro public school in Elda to pick up their children from class. The woman had already collected her son and was putting him into her car, when her ex-partner approached her, opened the door and fired two shots without saying a word. She managed to get out of the vehicle and run but he followed her down the street and shot her three more times, twice while she was lying on the ground. According to a number of the mothers who watched the events unfold, the boy, who had witnessed the entire incident, also fled and ran into the school screaming and crying, The aggressor then jumped into her car that was parked in front of the school and made to drive away but after about fifty metres, as he drove along the pavement to avoid traffic, he crashed the car between trees and the school fence at which point he turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the mouth. The woman had previously denounced her ex-partner for mistreatment after suffering several episodes of violence. They were not married but, the pair lived together for some time during which their

son was born. Following complaints that he had breached a restraining order, issued after he had threatened her with her life, the partner had been taken into police custody on the previous day, but after interview he was released. The woman later died on Friday having been in a coma in the Elda Hospital ICU since the shooting. She was identified as Jessyca Bravo Cutillas, a 28-year-old Spaniard and a waitress by profession. The aggressor, who died from his gunshot wounds at the scene, was 31 year old Imanol Castillo Sánchez. The events have shocked Elda only three months after an eight-yearold boy was found dead in his foster father's flat, after an assault on the house by two hooded men who also beat his mother. In addition, last September the owner of the Rabasa restaurant in Petrer was murdered and his restaurant robbed. On Thursday night, over 1500 people gathered in silent protest in the town after learning that Sánchez had several complaints of violence and was the subject of a restraining order against Jessyca. The mayor, Rubén Alfaro, stood alongside the vice president of the Consell, Mónica Oltra ; the Minister of Education, Vicent Marzà; the Director General of the Valencian Institute of Women, María Such; the Regional Deputy Cristina Rodríguez and the mayors of Petrer, Irene Navarro and de Monforte del Cid, María Dolores Berenguer. Students of the Valle de Elda Institute, a vocational training centre that is located a few metres from the Santo Negro School where the events took place, read a statement followed by another from the Sectoral Council of Equality for Women. The mayor, Ruben Alfaro, said that this was a "sad, heartbreaking and unfortunate episode" while the vice president of the Consell, Monica Oltra, promised that "she will review all procedures on gender violence "because, in this case, the aggressor had a long history of complaints. In Villena more than 70 people gathered in the Plaza de Santiago in protest. Councilor for Equality, Cate Hernández, called for action prevent this social scourge that this year, in Spain, has now accounted for the deaths of 43 women. There were further protests in Monforte del Cid , the victim's hometown, where a hundred people gathered at the Town Hall Square, while in Pinoso protesters shouted "Enough of gender violence!". As they took to the streets behind the mayor, Lázaro Azorín.

one driving along the CV95 can fail to be dismayed by the neglect to the Casa y Torre de Los Balcones just across the road from the Doña Monse hotel, and the state of disrepair into which its owners have let it fall. One of the few examples of an 18th-century agricultural manor house that remain on the coast of the Vega Baja the owner was instructed both in 2013 and 2014 to carry out urgent measures to protect the building which he has failed to do. The only action he did take was to fence the perimeter, so as to avoid accidents with people wandering across the site. Despite being protected in the 1986 Torrevieja General Plan as a building of special architectural interest the owners of the plot appealed to the court of litigation after an application to build a

hotel was turned down. In the court the promoters said that the cost of refurbishing the property is much greater than that of carrying out any new work, a project which would exceed 600,000 euros Their appeal was rejected, however, and now the house has finally been appropriated by the city council, but the building is said by experts to be unrecoverable. Most of the roof has already collapsed, and its general condition is derelict, so quite what the council intend to do with their new possession is still very much under discussion. The owners are now suggesting that they swap the site for development land in another area although the Council has said that the company is in breach of the legislation, and there is no available municipal land to carry out this action anyway.

Torrevieja gets approval to move police from front line duties Having at long last obtained union approval the Torrevieja mayor, José Manuel Dolón, Los Verdes, has said that he is now in a position to move older policemen, and those who might be affected by injury or illness, into secondary positions that will remove them from front line policing. They will now be able to remain as members of the Policia Local but will be employed in positions that are more suitable to their age or their medical condition.

Celebrating 70 years of Royal Marriage It is a remarkable achievement for any couple to reach 70 years of marriage but when it is a sovereign and her spouse the achievement serves to provide a shining example to all of us of the enduring commitment made during the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Representing a large expat community in Spain, the Anglican Chaplaincy covering the South Costa Blanca, East Costa Calida and Calasparra, is providing an opportunity for all those who would like to celebrate this remarkable achievement and, at the same time celebrate their own marriage, to join us in doing so. On November 20 we will be holding a special Celebration of the Holy Eucharist [Mass, Holy Communion] to give thanks to Almighty God for the seventieth wedding anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh at our church in Los Balcones (near Torrevieja Hospital), commencing at 3pm. Father Richard Seabrook SSC, Chaplain, says, “I represent one of the biggest expat communities anywhere in the world and this special occasion is important to all of us. Marriage is not just a legal union between a man and a woman but is a Holy Sacrament ordained by God. As such it is important that the Church celebrates this union. When our own Monarch and her spouse reaches seventy years of Holy Matrimony our church wants to be at the heart of the worldwide celebrations planned for this important day.” The Holy Eucharist will be followed by a Royal Afternoon Tea where we will be serving a typical “English Afternoon Tea” including cucumber sandwiches, sausage rolls, cake and, of course, tea! Everyone is welcome to join us in our service and for tea. If you would like directions to this church or information about any of our other churches visit our website on www.c-of-e-torrevieja.com or our facebook page on www.facebook.com/anglicantorrevieja. Strolling through Guardamar A beautifullly bright and sunny morning in November! What could be a better day for a stroll in the lovely area of Guardamar? About 60 members of one of the Torrevieja U3A Stroller groups, along with a few 4 legged friends, did just that after meeting up for a coffee and a chat in the Park cafe. Properly fortified, this was followed by a pleasant, leisurely walk through the sand duned park areas and then a walk through the main parks ending up along the beach whereupon the group broke up into smaller groups whilst descending on various cafes for a well-deserved coffee, maybe a spot of lunch and, of course, another natter. A pleasant finish to a pleasant morning. Barry Weston

Previously both human resources and the unions had objected to such a move as they said that there were not enough `places to provide them all with meaningful employment. In total there are 25 places, where officers will be employed on backroom duties taking them off the streets. This is a figure that exceeds 15% of the total workforce of 156 agents, including controllers. The mayor said that the move of the officers to different functions will not affect normal service. Officers that are required to move will retain their present salary, something on which the unions insisted prior to agreeing to the mayor’s proposal. In addition, the Police Council was informed that employment boards will be set up in order to fill the vacant and unoccupied positions of Inspector (4) and Agent (2), some-

thing for which the Police have been calling for over a year. In making the announcement the mayor referred to the police officers who have recently been detained by the Guardia Civil, albeit the investigation is still being carried out. Dolón said that it causes him "great sadness" and assured everyone that if the accusations are proven, "I will ensure that every possible action is taken against the officers concerned”. He said that they have let down the force and members of the public.

Municipal Leisure Centre loses cafeteria Despite catering for between 400 and 800 daily users the cafeteria in the Municipal Leisure Centre is closing down as the operator’s contract with the council has expired. The mayor says that he has kept the service going despite there being no formal contract but now it is necessary to tender for a new operator. At the moment there is no scheduled date for its reopening. This was announced last week by Mayor José

Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes) and the Councillor for Social Welfare, Fabiana Ibarra. (PSOE). The mayor said that he accepts that a cafeteria is "essential" for the operation of the facilities, which has between 400 and 800 daily users. He said that he has maintained the facility for as long as he could but council staff must now carry out an inventory of the facilities, and assess what works are necessary, so that the new tender

document can be prepared. The mayor also said that he did not rule out a complete closure of the CMO if important work is necessary to modernise the cafeteria area prior to tender. The CMO was built in the last decade at the same time as the shopping centre for a cost of 1.7 million euros. It has a capacity to house 1,500 people. It is a very popular venue in a municipality where more than a third of the population exceeds 60 years of age.

New funding for Orihuela Costa roads and parks Last week we saw a classic example of how experts simply cannot predict what the currency market is going to do next. The pound fell after a rise in UK interest rates which shouldn’t happen (according to the pundits) and people are bound to have been wrongfooted. So, you need be very cautious and buy or sell euros when the rate is good for you - remembering that you can also reserve an exchange rate by using a forward contract if you don’t have all the money available to pay for it yet. So what’s going on which could affect the exchange rate? The latest UK government shambles threatens to weaken Theresa May’s grip as PM following the resignation of Priti Patel, International Development secretary. Each trip or stumble brings the prospect of a Conservative coup and the unwelcome prospect of general election closer. Meanwhile Brexit talks have resumed, so any hints on progress, or lack of it, are likely to cause uncertainty for the pound. This just makes the exchange rate more

volatile (jumpy) even though it might stay within a certain range. At the same time the EU cut economic growth estimates for the UK over the coming two years but conversely they forecasted the fastest rate of growth for the Eurozone in a decade. So, what’s happened to the exchange rate this week? The pound has gained slightly against the euro (1.13) and is also up against the US dollar (1.315). The euro has also gained against the dollar (1.165) all of which means the dollar is bottom of the class this week. This maybe due to over-optimism with regards to how soon President Trump will be able to implement corporate tax reforms in the States. Written by www.thecurrencyexchange.co.uk

Orihuela has announced the placement of tenders for works on the coast for 900,000 euros. The Local Government Board says that it has approved the work which will concentrate on playgrounds, asphalting and repaving works in Orihuela Costa. Of the allocation, approximately a third will be spent on the parks with the balance going to fund improvements to roads. These works include paving, repairs of irrigation systems, creation of garden areas, repair and placement of sports facilities in various areas of Orihuela Costa. They will be carried out mainly in the following areas: Calle Apatito. Villapiedra, Calle Cabo Turiñan. Lomas de Cabo Roig, Calle Cabo Ortegal. Lomas de Cabo Roig, Calle Limonero. Montezenia, Calle Plutón. La Florida, Calle Escorpio, La Florida, Calle Baikal. Lagosol-Sector F-2, Calle del Rocío. La Zenia and Calle Colón. La Zenia The public tender for the renewal of roads and paving in Orihuela Costa amounting to 570,091 euros was also approved. This work will last for four months and will focus on the following areas: Campoamor, Los Dolses, Villamartín, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Citrus, La Florida, PAU-20 Palm Tree pruning is also underway in Orihuela Costa with the hiring of a bucket

truck and driver. Councillor for Playas, Luisa Boné, said that "it is increasingly necessary to cut the palms and a number of overgrowing trees in order to remove the branches and the fruit of the palms to ensure both the safety of pedestrians and the cleanliness of the pavements and roadways." However, no longer will you see the operatives climbing the trees using a harness as instructions have been received from Council Health and Safety saying that in future the pruning may only be by mechanical means (cranes or mobile platforms) to guarantee the health and safety of the staff who are required to work at height”. The cost of the pruning contract is 21,175 euros (VAT included) and the work is now underway on the Avenida del Cabo Roig.

I remember once being told by an American professor, “History is never taught in American schools”. I was puzzled by the comment, since I have always believed that it is history that informs both our present and our future. There is much that we don’t understand about the United States; Brits are often puzzled by the phrase “our American cousins”, which is a meaningless phrase at the best of times, and particularly when it is over used by UK politicians busily looking for trade deals post Brexit. Although we speak the same language, cultural differences and values abound, and there are often stark differences, which may be difficult for Europeans to understand. Let me take one example, Thanksgiving, where the Spanish dimension seems to be mostly ignored in favour of a more comfortable version of history. Very soon people all over the United States will celebrate what they believe to be the first ever Thanksgiving in 1621, gathering together with family and friends and celebrating with traditional turkey and pumpkin pie. I really don’t want to spoil this very special day, but it seems that the wrong date and event is being celebrated. It really is time that we had a close look at the facts, as they appear to many historians. According to American tradition, and not necessarily historical fact, most American school pupils are taught that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by English pilgrims who found refuge in America on the Mayflower. Archaeologists at Florida’s Museum of Natural History contradict this statement, and claim that the first

Thanksgiving was actually celebrated in San Augustin, La Florida in 1565, which is 50 years earlier. It was the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and a motley collection of 800 soldiers, sailors and assorted settlers, which would have included many conscripts from the Canary Islands who were despatched to help populate the new Spanish colonies. It was they who celebrated the first Thanksgiving, and not English pilgrims in their wide-brimmed hats as often pictured. It was these new arrivals from Spain who celebrated the first Thanksgiving, which began with a special thanksgiving mass, before enjoying a shared feast with local Native Americans. Program announced for Torrevieja Auditorium P

resident of the Generalitat, Theater, Ximo Puig, was in Torrevieja last week where he was inspecting recent maintenance and improvement works, funded by the Valencian Community, carried out to the International Auditorium adjacent to the N332. Built at a cost of more than 50 million euros the building was opened in May 2011 since which time it has hardly been used. As such the management of the auditorium has been assumed by the Society of Thematic Projects of the Generalitat (SPTCV), which is chaired by the former Elche Politician Antonio Rodes, who has said that they are determined to make far more use out of the facility than has previously been the case. The latest expenditure, of 350,000 euros, has been provided to adapt the scenery and the stage for the upcoming performances of theatre, music, dance and opera that will get underway on 16th November with the ballet "El Amor Brujo", the first of 11 shows through to February. The piece was written by Manuel de Falla in the early 20th century. With a distinct Andalusian essence, it explores the gypsy mystique and approaches love in its

most primary and essential form telling the tale of the young gypsy girl Candela, whose love for Carmelo is haunted by the ghost of her previous partner. This is one of the most important ballets in Spain and one of Víctor Ullate’s greatest successes. Nineteen truck drivers test positive for drugs in a single day

M

urcia’s Guardia Civil carried out a day of intensive roadside checks on Friday in which they stopped the drivers of 235 heavy goods vehicles, over a 24 hour period, testing them for controlled substances. Of the drivers stopped, 19 (8.08%) tested positively, 6 for cocaine, 12 for cannabis and 1 for a combination of both. This followed the campaign that was carried out at the beginning of November that was also aimed at the professional drivers of heavy vehicles, which resulted in positive tests on a dozen people who were found to be driving under the influence of drugs and two who were under the influence of alcohol. In October, in Sangonera la Seca, a family from Elche was completely wiped out in an accident caused by a truck driver who had used cocaine. The driver said he was a dis-

tracted although tests revealed that he had used cocaine. During the roadside checks the Guardia recorded 48 other transport violations including excessive driving times and 7 infractions related to the Road Safety Law. One of the drivers who tested positive for cocaine was at the wheel of a vehicle ladened with dangerous goods, a 40ton articulated vehicle loaded with propane gas bottles. Under current Road Safety Regulations, the offence of driving a vehicle under the influence of drugs is punishable with a fine of 1,000 euros and the loss of 6 points from your driving license. The Traffic Sector of the Murcian Civil Guard say that they will maintain their operational efforts to monitor professional drivers as a priority for the maintenance of road safety, given the danger they present in the event of an accident. They say that, whether professional or not, those who drive recklessly, or who drive after having consumed drink or taken drugs, are doing so irresponsibly and anyone who is now involved in any sort of infraction will be tested for alcohol and drugs. They add that the actions they take are aimed at raising awareness among drivers, and in particular, drivers of goods or passenger transport vehicles, whose risk is increased by the size of the vehicles that they drive.

Romanian threatens to jump off Murcia Cathedral roof

One of the rooftop demands was for a sandwich.

A 35 year old Romanian was talked down from the top of Murcia’s cathedral last week after he had threatened to commit suicide by launching himself from the roof. The man climbed up onto the roof at 9am on Tuesday from where he threatened to jump, causing great alarm and not an undue amount of interest. A National Police psychologist and the consul of Romania, José David Pérez, eventually convinced him to get down after they had spent a little over 2 hours talking him round. Members of both the Local and the National Police, along with a translator who was requested by the immigrant, were quickly on the scene as they attempted to gauge the mental condition of the man.

Firefighters, members of the Civil Protection and an ambulance. were also made available nearby. Initially there were dozens of onlookers on the scene but these were all moved on following the arrival of the police who then cordoned off the area and closed the lane to the plaza from all adjoining streets. The man, who is said to suffer from a mental disorder, claimed that he was owed compensation for a traffic accident suffered in Castellón and that he was owed. He said that he was a victim and that he refused to move until he was given the money and a sandwich. He was eventually talked down by the negotiators and taken away in police and medical custody.

A Million Dollar Proposition!

I

t may be a sunny November on the Costa Blanca but a snowy winter beckons for Studio32’s cast as they prepare for their next show. This talented company will be performing a wonderful stage adaptation of that film favourite, Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas”. The show contains some all-time classic songs including “Blue Skies”, “Sisters”, and the Bing Crosby title number “White Christmas”.

Dianne Oliver and John Palmer play Ralphy Sheldrake and his long-suffering secretary Ethel

Show producers Phil Davies and Bob Wallace need a helping hand with publicity when they decide to stage a show to help their old army commander. Who better to ask than another old army buddy turned TV producer Ralph Sheldrake (played by John Palmer, pictured right) who gets them air time on the famous TV programme “The Ed Sullivan Show”. Ralph is a bit of a wide-boy, and describes his plans to help as “a million dollar proposition”, but his telephone conversation is overheard and misinterpreted, and not everything runs quite as smoothly as he planned. Ralph is assisted by his long-suffering secretary Ethel (played by Dianne Oliver, pictured left) who tries to keep everything under control. Will it be a million-dollar winner after all? This is John’s second show with Studio32, having played the role of Bob Cratchitt in last winter’s show “A Christmas Carol”. Dianne has been with the company a lot longer, having been a founder member in 2013. She has played many roles including Marley’s Ghost in the same show, and the pianist in Studio32’s recent summer show

“Mack and Mabel”. Studio32 are once again supporting the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Association with this production, as well as other local charities. So why not help them raise money for worthy causes whilst enjoying a terrific night’s entertainment. Tickets are selling fast with only limited availability for Friday and Saturday, so make sure to get your order in now for a great evening’s entertainment. Show dates are Wednesday November 29th to Saturday December 2nd at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. All performances start at 7.30pm, and doors open at 7pm. Porter House Bees v Junction Jaguars 5- 7 (Last season 10-2) The girls from El Galan upped their game this week by matching good scoring with quick finishing (in the most part) to secure a victory over the Porter House Bees. Vice-captain Patty Poo got the first leg in the 2nd triples game with Harvey Lane getting the finish for triples 1 and 3, both times on a nippy D16- earning him MOTM. The Jags then took the next 4 legs on the trot Hilda D12, Lesley D2, Lisa D1 and Lisa again in her singles against the Harvmeister when she popped in D7. The ladies couldn’t believe their luck with the score line reading 5-2 in their favour but then a marathon match between Hilda and Gilly saw the ‘D1-No Bust’ rule being employed by which Mrs Kirby was rewarded. Then Little Lelly Bear threw some terrific darts and checked out confidently on D11- first dart to bring the Jaguars into ‘draw’ territory. Secretary Sim then had the ominous task of taking on John Lane in the 5th singles but found the form with a 3-dart check-out, T11-S13D16 to give them the win. High scores for the Jags: Lesley Eagles- 100, 114, 85, 81; Liz Cowan- 105, 100, 98; Simone de Lacy: 2 x 81; Frau Pattenzie Poo Schofield 92, 90; Wendy Hayward 93, Lisa Ivill 89; Hilda Wilkinson 83; MOTM Lisa Ivill of the Black-foot Sioux tribe. SOUTHERN LEAGUE 2017/18

El Rancho Bowls Club.

RESULTS AND TABLES

The Raiders started the week with a bit of a flourish, playing host to Country Bowls Flamingos and tasting success by taking the rinks by 4-2 and the overall shots. In the afternoon the Pintos were at San Luis against the Trekkers, always a tricky fixture. We did however enjoy good company and humour, though the bowls went a little against us, in taking just the one point. Friday morning found the Mustangs playing at Montemar against the Matadors and turned in a good performance in taking two rinks, always a good result away from home. Geoff Jones, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 9-18. Barbara Jones, Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 6-24. Ann Taylor, Shirley Edwards and Jim Taylor 12-15. Irene Thomson, Jim Gracie and Eddie Thomson 13-25. Diane Yates, Keith Cunningham and David Whitworth 26-14. June Whitworth, Henry Ryder and Richard Lee 19-15. Meanwhile the Broncos entertained the Country Bowls Geckos and played well to take 3 rink and the overall shots. The Broncos also took the friendly rink, played by Tricia Elsam, Keith Longshaw and Tony Robinson, by 28-10. Pam Harris, Graham Day and Brian Harris 24-12. Gill Bartlett, Peter Blackburn and Rob Clark 14-16. Gary Dunstone, Bob Easthope and Barry Bright 13-27. Edward Elsam, John Richards and Gary Newson 17-11. David Baker, Ron Edwards and Mick Ager 17-20. Ann C Taylor, Denise Morgan and Malc Elmore 38-8. Country Bowls Report

by Peter Dix

On Sunday we held our annual memorial trophy game in memory of past members Ruth Fernandez and Victor Statham, 30 members competed for the trophies over 18 ends and the winners were ladies, Sandra Simpson and men’s Niel West. Trophies were presented by Joel Fernandez and Doreen Statham who appreciated the support for this event. In the leagues this week we travelled to El Rancho on both Monday and Friday, never an easy green to play and it was quick and windy on both days. It was extra difficult on Monday for both sets of players with a strong northerly wind blowing across the green, but we persevered and stuck to the task in hand resulting in a win on 2 rinks and collect 4 points to El Rancho’s 10, shots 92 for, 123 against. Rink scores: Gary Ponsford, Jean Turner, Gordon Dixon 12 – 19, Sandra Simpson, Derek Jiggins, Peter Dix 10 – 24, Brenda Jiggins, Ben Noke, Phillip Warrington 9 – 20, Geoff Eggleston, Pat Emmett, John Simpson 9 – 29, Ann Barratt,Dave Smith, Lesley Turner 14 – 12, Linda Freeman, Keith Holliman, Geoff Paylor 28 – 19 On Friday it was a very cold start making the green even quicker than normal and again coping with the windy conditions was difficult for all. We started very well on some rinks and maintained this on 3 rinks this time coming out on top on 3 rinks, but losing the long game on shot difference to the Broncos, overall shots 94 to 123 against , points 6 for and 8 against. Rink scores: Mike Davies, Geoff Eggleton, Geoff Paylor 12 – 16, Sandra Simpson, Derek Jiggins, Dot Davies 12 – 24, Graham Richardson, Andy White, Les Turner 20 – 17, Linda Freeman, Pat Emmett, Phil Warrington 27 – 13, Brenda Jiggins, Gary Ponsford, Peter Dix 15 – 14, Lynne Bryce, Jean Turner, Gordon Dixon 8 - 38 For further information view our new website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com for all the latest news or email President Peter Dix at peterdix1948@googlemail.com

La Marina Report by Barry Latham The week started early when the Club played Bonalba in the Premier 20.This consists of singles, pairs, trips and rinks played home and away at the same time. At home our Singles played by Andy Bartlett won 21-11. The Pairs lost unfortunately. The Trips were Shirley Hadaway, Cliff Rawlinson and Kathy Manning who won 30-6 while not to be out done Dave Hadaway led his Rink of Mike Smith, Carol Smith and Mo Kidd to a 28-5 victory. The away team obviously had to play their strong home side and we lost both Singles and Pairs by the same score of 15-21. The Trips of Alex Whyte, Mike Stone and Janet Parsons held on to win by two shots. The Rink did well and won 22-11 skipped by Barry Latham, Garth Slater, Wendy Latham and Anne Stone. Very close over there winning by one shot overall. So La Marina won 10-6. Good on yer. Come Monday and the good play went on with both the Explorers and the Pathfinders winning. The Explorers played away against San Miguel Pulsars and won 104. A good all round performance with Pete Parsons leading his trip of Mike Surch and Chris Webb to a 23-13 win. Tom Spencer, Margaret McLaughlin and Steve Douglas won by 13 shots. Richard Robinson, Carol Smith and Anne Stone fought well to win by four. Alex Whyte, Martin Webb and Janet Parsons did well winning 2114. The Pathfinders went over to Greenlands to face the Sycamores and came away with a comfortable victory of 12-2. Alan Castle, Bernie Carr and Paul Tregoing won 26-13. John Withers, Garth

Slater and Jean Tregoing won 21-11. Terry and Jean Perchard plus Jack Chorlton won a close game by two shots. John Morgan, Angie Butler and Gina Hindle won 25-20 and to top the lot Sue Daniels, John Rae and Barbara Forshaw (Good job the dentist sorted her teeth) had a great win of 34-5. Good week so far with another win, this time in the Winter League versus Greenlands at their place 8-4. Well done everyone. Len Daniels, Steve Hindle, Ron Maiden and Anne Stone combined together to a 17-12 victory while Dave Taylor (just out of hospital), Mike Smith, Martin Butler and Mo Taylor (looking after him) won 19-7. Barry Latham, Peter Parsons, Wendy Latham and Dave O’Sullivan pulled through to win 23-14. Many thanks for the great meal put on by Greenlands after the match. The Merlins entertained the San Miguel Cougars at La Marina and did themselves proud by winning 10-4. One rink won because of a mishap to the opposition’s car giving us 10 shots advantage. John Withers won by 10 shots with the help of Steve Hindle and Martin Butler. Sue Daniels, John Rae and Mo Taylor managed to survive even though they dropped five on the last end while Barry Latham, Berni Carr and Barbara Forshaw won with the last wood on the last end. Ah well all good things come to an end when the Ospreys flew over to Vistabella and lost to the Lanzadores 2-10. Our only winning rink was provided by Alex Whyte, Jim Reeves and Dave O’Sullivan.

La Siesta Bowls by Rod Edgerton A great day’s bowling on Monday for those playing and watching as both the Apollos and the Pioneers had home fixtures in the SABA Enterprise and Voyager Divisions. Both matches followed similar patterns which ended in 8 point to 6 victories after close matches on all the rinks. Stars for the Apollos against Vistabella Drivers.were the rinks of Pat Moore, John Taylor and Jean Cooper who won 24-11 and Tony and Val Dalton with Dave Laverick who won 25-12 with both rinks leading from the starting gun and each team teams winning 12 of the 18 ends. Ever reliable Dawn Taylor with Florence and Mike Edwards gained 5 shots on the last two ends to win 21-19.The final shots totals being 111 to 97 to the Apollos. Stars for the Pioneers against the Quesada Rubies had to be the rink of Wendy Ralph with Jack and Barbara Cooper who after 9 ends were trailing by 9 shots but had a remarkable second 9 to pull off a 24-11 win. Sue Mahomet, Sheila Millward and Pat Reilly continued their good form with a 24-17 win whilst Molly Russell, Joe Kocsis and John Porter managed to win 18-15.Credit must go to the whole team even the losing rinks as each fought to the end to achieve a 114-108 win. The overall shots in the match were close throughout leaving the overall win in doubt until the final ends were played. Back to winning ways for La Siesta in the Winter League at home to

Montemar winning on 4 of the 5 rinks obtaining 10 points with the total shots being 105-68. The best winning rinks were Pat and Trish Reilly with Mike and Florence Edwards winners by 32-14 and Barbara Cooper, George Richardson, Sue Jordan and Brian Fraser winning 27-11. The Blues entertained Emerald Isle Outlaws and won on 4 rinks and drew on another picking up 11 points to the Outlaws 3.The shots going to the Blues by 141-76.Excellent wins for Robert Heath with Mike and Florence Edwards winning 36-7 and Dawn and John Taylor with Brian Harman winners by 29-9 were the highlights of an excellent result. The Golds were away at Greenlands against the Cedars and won the match by 8 points to 6 in a match that saw the shots difference being in favour of the Cedars by the narrowest of margins of 1 shot. Biggest winners for the Golds came from Alan Ralph with Penny and John Porter whilst wins on 3 further rinks gave the Golds a slender victory. Our thanks go to John Clarke for his sterling efforts in the past few years in captaining the team but who has now decided it is time for a well earned rest in this position although he will still remain one of our key bowlers within the squad.

El Rancho Bowls Club The Raiders started the week with a bit of a flourish, playing host to Country Bowls Flamingos and tasting success by taking the rinks by 4-2 and the overall shots. June Whitworth, Henry

Ryder and Richard Lee 19-15. Our annual competition in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Day Appeal was held at Font del Llop golf course on a beautifully warm day. Once again a “usual suspects" day, apart from returning member John Milton who , after an absence of 6 years, managed a second place finish in the silver division with 39 points. A return to his old handicap is in the offing!! Winner of the silver division on count-back from John was Gerrard McCabe, also winning an NTP and sharing the 2’s pot with Alan Craig. Runner -up in the gold division was Bill Stobo, soundly beaten by fellow Scot Graeme Buchanan who also won an NTP. The other two NTP's were won by Vic Smith. Many thanks to Mick "the grip" for providing the extra prizes to our winners, and to our members for paying up on fines to be passed on to the British Legion. There were obviously many bunker shots played!! Our next meeting is at Altorreal on November 23rd, first tee 10.32 at a cost of 40 euros. We will be playing for the Barclays trophy. An early reminder of the presentation dinner on Friday 1st December. Full details will follow shortly. Also the AGM on Tuesday 5th December. Both will be held at the la marina sports centre. Finally, many thanks to Helena and Nicky for feeding us at the sports centre.

SHORT GAME SECRETS Every single golfer who has played this wonderful game is looking for the ‘secret’ to golf to enable them to be a great player. No one asks if there is a secret they just convince themselves that there is one and pursue it endlessly. Well I have some good news for your there IS a secret to playing good golf the bad news is that there is MORE than one, many in fact. Do want to know something daft? Well these aren’t really secrets because you already know what they are because they could simply be called the ‘truths of the game’ according to a US expert called Dave Pelz. For those who do not know him he is the short game wizard and guru to the USA tour stars including the incredible Phil Mickelson. If these techniques work for him then you then this article should now start to get your attention. I will attempt to briefly explain the five secrets to a better short game as taught by Dave Pelz, namely: The secret of feedback - If you can't receive and analyse feedback from your shots and correlate them both consciously and subconsciously with your actions and learn from these experiences then you will not improve. Intelligent Practise - Never hit a few buckets of ball for the sake of it this is exercise not practise. It is essential that you work at a slower rate than normal, think about every shot, go through your pre-shot routine as if playing a shot on the course and ensure that you take your proper address position for every shot Alignment - Never practise any golf shot without adopting your correct address and alignment position because even a good swing will result in the ball going in the wrong direction and moreover your subconscious will actually try to hit the ball at the target and corrections will be made during your swing. You will never groove or learn a good swing on this basis so at all time during practice use a club on the ground (aimed parallel to the target line) to assist you with the alignment learning process. Trajectory - Never turn away after a golf shot just because it has gone in the wrong direction because you can still learn something from the shot in particular the trajectory. After each practise shot ask yourself was the shot on target? was it the correct distance? was the trajectory correct? if not why not? was the trajectory the same as the last shot?

These thoughts will help you on the golf course and therefore it is important to check the height and character of each shot’s trajectory. The Finish - Before you play any shot your must visualise it in your minds eye so that you make the perfect motion. You can only achieve this from experience and seeing and feeling how different swings cause the ball to react in different ways. You can’t learn this from watching other people, reading books or watching videos. One method used to assist this process is to ‘hold your finish after each practise shot because it causes kinesthetic awareness. All you have to do is to complete the follow through position of the swing, without moving so that you have the feel of the swing as the ball lands. Holding the finish position will help the mind to correlate the swing and feel needed to play a certain short to obtain certain results. You should try these techniques for yourself but regardless you should always remember that bad practise is worse than no practise at all. Torry leave it late as win lifts them to 2nd CD Torrevieja ............... 2 UD Petrelense ............. 0

E

ven though Torry had lost ground on fellow Preferente division pace setters, following last weeks draw at Redovan, belief amongst the squad was that this was just a slight blip. After all, the defence boasted the meanest goals against statistics of only 5 in 10 games, whilst visitors Petrelense had leaked 29 goals, therefore becoming the most generous. Surely gaffer Pedreño would be opening a bottle of his favourite tipple come the final whistle, as his boys in blue and white retained their rightful playoff spot.

The game got off to a lively start with the home side taking the game to the visitors but despite the attackers having plenty of the ball it was the overlapping full back Borja who had the first meaningful effort on goal, skimming the crossbar with keeper Luis all at sea. Victor Hugo put a shot the wrong side of Buyo’s post on the quarter hour mark but this was Petrelense’s only real foray into the Tory box during the opening 45. Skipper Vicente should have done better when he ballooned his effort over the bar after being played through with a delightful ball from Beltran and Walid headed over when well placed to score but on the half hour mark new boy Mar was on target with his second in two starts. The new addition to the squad slid the ball under the body of the advancing Luis, following through to clip the ball home from a tight angle. However, moments later, the big Algerian was booked after bundling over the visiting keeper. This aggressive side to his nature will be something that Pedreño will be carefully watching. The lead was no more than Torry deserved, having dominated much of the play without really capitalising on their chances. We were all expecting rather more as the second period got under-

Algerian striker Mar was on target for Torry the 2nd time in two starts

way but it was left until the dying minutes before Juanpe could make the game safe. The 61st minute sub seized on a poor back pass to round Luis in the Petrelense goal to secure the points for Torry. At that stage the home side could have been staring at a share of the points but after Petrelense sub Sergio inexplicably missed an empty goal from close range midway through the half the home side were always favourites to take the points. The win lifts Torry into second place but with leaders Hercules winning comfortably at Pinoso they will have to do a whole lot better in the coming weeks if they are to overhaul the Alicante club. Torry’s next game is on Saturday 18 November, ko 4pm at Jove Espanol. The Torry army intend running a coach to the match. Details on their Facebook page or website.

TPGS – Roda – Poppy Day Competition T.M.G.S. @ La Marquesa 8/11/17 Roda was the venue for our Poppy Day event. Once again it was supported very well with 40 golfers battling it out for the 2 divisional prizes. The “two’s pot” was shared between 2 golfers, Darrell Rose and Phil Sully each receiving 40 euros. As always, we have a prize for the golfer who did not have the best of rounds! The receiver of this weeks bottle of wine was Ray Pullen with a score of 18. A BIG thank you to everyone. Thanks must also go to Carl and Lisa at the Ale House. Our next game is 17th November at El Valle. Today we played the 2nd round of our Eclectic competition. The weather conditions seemed perfect for a good round of golf and for one of our members it proved to be so Captain John Eyre returned the best score of the day with his 42 points! Oh and a nice handicap cut! Just what the Brits didn’t want a few weeks before we play the Vikings for the Viking Trophy, which they are yet to win! This years’ competition will be played at Villamartin on the 27th November, watch this space to see who comes out on top. La Marquesa was again presented in pristine condition and a pleasure to play and still they are making even more improvements. Results: N.T.P.’s hole 5 K. Persson, hole 11 T. Roed, hole 15 Nada, hole 17 it’s not usual, Tom Jones. The 2’s pot contained just €30 this week and members
