IU seek blueprint to protect San Miguel Cave Houses The leader of the Izquierda Unida in San Miguel de Salinas, Bienvenida Campillo, has denounced the council for failing to implement a municipal project to revitalize one of the most iconic attractions in the town, the site of the cave houses which have been in situ since time immemorial. She said that the work "remains stalled because of a lack of interest by the government team to put it in hand" stating that it has been ready to go "since 2011 when it first obtained the approval of the Generalitat, but since which time nothing has been done The plan to update the small settlement of about 20 houses was first muted back in 2003 with the approval of a whole
series of local actions that would both improve the standing of the cave house dwellers, of the houses themselves and of the surrounding area. It was suggested that they could be promoted as a great attraction drawing many thousands of additional visitors to
the town and thereby ensuring a much needed boost to the local economy. Unfortunately, though, the council have not accredited the
site with the importance that it deserves, with the plan suffering all sorts of variations since it was first introduced. Continued on Page 2

But in 2008 the departments of Urbanism and Culture eventually announced that they considered it’s improvement necessary for the preservation of this symbolic settlement and that it should be subject to a special plan for which they obtained the approval in 2011, however, since that announcement there appears to have been no progress whatsoever, despite the fact that the matter is raised at regular plenary meetings. Campillo says that there are about twenty cave
houses that are grouped together in a small community "but in an environment that is suffering from decline". She adds that the public lighting of a small green area has not worked for some time nor are the gardens cared for or the area cleaned." “The blueprint is important because the area can become a tourist attraction where the town can hold cultural events, exhibitions or workshops by artisans and where children can get to learn about traditional trades." She hopes that at some point Sanmigueleras caves can resemble those of the Rodeo in Rojales with their regular attractions and activities.

A
resident has stumbled on a mystery structure on Cala Mosca, the last green area on Orihuela Costa where a developer plans to build 1,500 new houses.
obvious since it could complicate and delay the final building permission which he is desperately seeking.
There is speculation that it could be a storage facility used during the Spanish civil war or the remains of an old irrigation system.
C.L.A.R.O., has for years led a campaign to Save Cala Mosca. Thanks to our petition, signed by over 7,000 persons determined to prevent a mega building project which would destroy this last remaining open land on the coast, we have secured the support of the European Parliament which has effectively blocked the project until all legal avenues are explored before the project can be given final approval.
What is clear is that the developer, the owner of the land, has an obligation to declare what this is and have it properly investigated. C.L.A.R.O. will insist that this is done.
Currently a public consultation is in process where the degree of protection of two endangered species present on Cala Mosca, a rare flower and a snail, is one of the key issues.
It could be of some archaeological importance and be protected by regional or local laws. The developer has no excuse for not having declared it already. It is his obligation. He has owned the land for decades and applied for building permission 10 years ago.
The latest find could be a lucky break. If, after official investigation, it is decided that it is of public interest this could affect the planned building project. Every legitimate means should be used to protect this emblematic zone.
The structure is made of bricks and stones. It descends 10-15 metres at a gradient of 45 degrees leading to what appears to be a tunnel or cave. The person who discovered the structure did not enter and to do so would require authorisation, lights and proper protection.
The infrastructure of streets and pavements has been in place for several years. He and his employees must know every inch of the land. Of course, if the structure is of significance and is protected by law, his interest in remaining silent is
It will be a difficult task as can be seen by the action of the governing Popular Party of Orihuela and its new coalition partner, the Citizens Party, who voted against a motion in last week's plenary meeting to postpone the building project and protect Cala Mosca.

Councillors ‘drop in’ on Cabo Roig
L to r - John Critcher, Modesto, Luisa Boné, Sofía Álvarez, Patsy Calvert and Fermin
F
ollowing the invitation made two weeks ago by the Leader Newspaper, for the Mayor and his Councillors to visit the Orihuela Costa, Luisa Boné, in her first full day as Councillor for Beaches and Coastal Coordinator, was accompanied by Sofía Álvarez, Tourism, Transport and Foreign Residents, as the pair walked through Cabo Roig with local coordinators John Critcher and Patsy Calvert. John and Patsy explained that they were not conducting a blame session, they simply wanted to improve the cleanliness and sanitation around Cabo Roig and the Orihuela Costa, where tourists would once again arrive in numbers to take advantage of the wonderful facilities that the area has on offer. The pair were able to point out many areas of concern, some involving cleanliness, waste disposal, the collection of rubbish and the hygiene around many of the locations in which the bins are positioned. They also expressed their distress that in many other areas, all on the forecourts or terraces of local banks, restaurants and warehouses, there were a number of aspects of the infrastructure that had been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that they now presented a danger to the general public. Mr Critchley highlighted the Iberdrola Electricity 3 phase junction box outside the Trinity Pub that had already been denounced by the Pub owner. He said that it was a major problem of health and Safety, and it had been for a couple of years. He suggested that it was only a matter of time before somebody was seriously injured. Almost adjacent to this is an Hidraqua water meter and distribution
point where the pavement has been broken and the pipework is displayed above ground. These, in addition to the graffiti, the broken fencing, steps, kerbstones and protruding drainage covers were all noted by the visiting delegation. Cllr Álvarez explained that many of the problems occurred on private land and as such there was little that the council could do. She said that the newly formed Cabo Roig Association should approach the individual owners following which, if no progress was made, they should be denounced. One thing that was agreed was the re-siting of the 4 green plastic bins on Calle del Mar. Boné said that she would instruct the refuse company to take the necessary action. She added that the bins would be moved and their current site thoroughly cleaned out in the next day or two. The Councillor then moved onto the coast itself where, along with colleague Modesto, she walked along the Paseo de Aguamarina. She said that plans would be put in place to ensure a regular clean which would include it’s hosing down along with the removal of litter and waste. Although the councillors said they were unable to help with many of the problems raised they agreed that the visit had been worthwhile having clarified many questions, which will enable them to make better informed decisions in the future.

La Salinas Lodge in support of Torrevieja Alimentos Solidarios L
as Salinas Lodge No 79 held a lunch last Thursday at the Asturias restaurant, where they celebrated the presentation of 1300 euros worth of foodstuffs to Alimentos Soladarios. The charity, which is situated on C/San Pascual 227 in Torrevieja, runs a ‘soup kitchen’ from which it distributes hot food, all prepared on the premises by a professional chef, to over 300 people a day and almost 2000 every week. It does so with the help of almost 70 volunteers. The kitchen first opened its doors to needy individuals and families in January 2010, since when it has largely survived on the generosity of the local public. It has received some small council grants in the past but these seem to be diminishing as the funding to all charities is reduced. As such it has become increasingly reliant on donations from public groups and associations. Past Worshipful Master, John Edwards, said that he had visited the kitchen and

seen how it works at first hand. He said that it really was a worthwhile cause and the experience had almost obliged him to adopt it as his annual charity whilst in the chair. Most pleasingly, the result was in evidence at the lunch when Alimentos Soladarios supporters, Antonio Sanchez and Martina Mazon, formally thanked the Lodge members for their generous donation. Charity Steward Eddie Davis, who after 12 years with the lodge is moving back to the UK, said that he too was delighted to help in drawing the donations together and that he had been particularly pleased by the generosity of Los Balcones supermarket Dial Prix which, as a gesture of their own solidarity, had increased the value of the 1000euros collected by the Lodge to 1300 euros worth of goods. John Edwards said that all of the goods, which included over 750 litres of milk, was delivered to Alimentos Soladarios prior to Christmas.

MELODY MAKERS INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER Verity Hall and Rebecca Holt, enthralled the audience with "Pie Jesu"
Orihuela Costa Resort, La Zenia, Saturday January 28th., 2017. "House Full" signs are synonymous with Melody Makers International, with both the afternoon and evening performances this day, again going to prove the truth of this adage. Under the baton of conductor Nigel Hopkins, over 1200 people enjoyed the very best tunes and songs, from the pen of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Some of the songs were well known to Saturday's audience, some perhaps new, but all beautifully sung by members of Melody Makers International, with the help of talented musicians on keyboard, woodwind and percussion. Songs from Aspects of Love, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera and Evita during the first half of this excellent show, had the house singing, along with many a tapping foot! Masquerade from Phantom of the Opera was a delight, along with the evocative "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" sung with great feeling by Jane Atkinson. Mention should be made of Matthew Hopkins striding across the stage as "The Phantom", very formidable. What a splendid voice Matthew has. As in previous years, many of the songs and tunes have been arranged by Nigel Hopkins.
Eric Berg, referred to by conductor Nigel, as the companies "Wild Card", took to the stage with "King Herod's Song", from Jesus Christ Superstar, and did not disappoint. The talented Verity Hall and Rebecca Holt, youngest members of Melody Makers, enthralled the audience with "Pie Jesu" from Requiem, bringing the first half to a close. During the second half of the show, songs from Whistle Down The Wind, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sunset Boulevard and would you believe, the Barcelona Olympic Theme, again penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber "Amigos Para Siempre" What a talent that man has. The finale was a medley of great songs from Phantom of the Opera, to which the audience gave a well deserved standing ovation. This concert by Melody Makers International was supporting the charity Reach Out, that helps the homeless and needy. A great concert for a tremendous charity. Andrew Lloyd Webber would have been well pleased. Details of future concerts can be found by visiting the web site: www.costablancachoirs.es Robert W Barnes.

ANOTHER SPANISH ARREST OF OPERATION CAPTURA FUGITIVE Operation Captura fugitive sentenced after pleading guilty to possessing indecent photographs of children Matthew Sammon, one of the British fugitives from the Operations Captura campaign arrested in Spain, received a jail sentence on Wednesday 25 January after being extradited to the UK. Sammon was located in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, Spain, the same day his details were released to the public as part of the Operation Captura campaign run by the UK’s National Crime Agency and Crimestoppers in October 2016. He was arrested by the Spanish National Police after a tip off from a member of the public. He received a sentence of 2 years and 6 months at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday 25 January,
after pleading guilty to making indecent photographs of children and possessing indecent photographs of children. At the time of arrest, Sammon was the 77th fugitive to be arrested out of 96 publicised through Operation Captura. British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley commented “The arrest, extradition and sentencing of Matthew Sammon, would not have been possible without the valuable tip off from a member of the public in Costa del Sol, and without the excellent cooperation between the Spanish and British law enforcement authorities. The sentence this week shows the value of the Operation Captura campaign, and Spanish and British authorities will continue working closely together to tackle crime.”

Bonnie Night for The British Legion in La Zenia T
he Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion had a busy week with activities on both Wednesday and Thursday night. On Wednesday over 60 members and guests celebrated Burns Night at Alfie’s Place in La Zenia whilst on the following evening, at the meeting postponed from the previous week, the District Community Support Officer from Spain North, Pamela Twissel Cross, brought members up to date with recent changes to the RBL Welfare system. At Alfies Place the branch celebrated the life of Scotland’s National Poet – Robert Burns in a way he would have wanted – eating, drinking, dancing, piping and poetry! Burns wrote some of the world’s most famous songs and poetry including Auld Lang Syne and the Orihuela Costa celebrated his birthday in fine style. Members looked on as the haggis was piped in by Barry Waddington of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. It was presented by branch member Terry Maguire following which Mark McMillan seized his moment of glory by offering a fluent and entertaining rendition of the Burns’ poem – the Address to the Haggis. Rabbie would have been proud as Mark put in a spectacular performance following which the haggis was served with Neeps and Tatties, although there was not too much disappointment as the turnips,
which are not easily available in Spain, had to be substituted by carrots.
Addressing the haggis
With the meal out of the way it was the turn of Terry Maguire to provide the humorous highlight of the Night with the Toast to the Lassies. In his presentation Terry praised the role of women in the world today, especially his wife Kate, with selective recollections from a recent weekend break. Needless to say, at the end of the evening the journey home was completed in silence! But not to be outdone, Kate did have the opportunity to answer as she was next up with the traditional reply to the Toast to the Lassies, in which, with her witty response and her quotes from the bard, she amply gained her revenge for the women. During the course of the evening Mark McMillan entertained the diners with the Gillie Callum or "Scottish sword dance" around two crossed swords and then toward the end of the celebration he was joined by fiancé Angie Real as the pair treated members to a highland dance. Special mention must be made of Barry Waddington who, despite his illness, provided the piping accompaniment throughout the evening, to Dan Davy who crooned his way through the great American songbook and to the organiser, Branch Secretary Jean Heald, who spent many hours ensuring that members had an entirely enjoyable evening.

Would you want to cope with organising a funeral in Spain W
hen a close friend or a family member dies, the last thing you need is the worry of complex regulations and the red-tape of a Spanish funeral. At such a difficult time could you or your family cope with organising a funeral in Spain? If not you need look no further than PF Samper, a third generation independent family funeral director, based in Pilar de la Horadada. We know that the death of a loved one is a difficult experience, one that all of us are likely to experience during our lifetime, and when mourning the loss of a friend or a family member, the very last thing you want to think about is the planning of a funeral, a fact that is considerately recognised by Francisca, a long time supporter of The Royal British Legion, who has been helping the expat community from her family run business in Pilar for over 20 years. “At PF Samper”, she says, “we aim to provide only the highest level of personal attention as we ease this process for you and your family. We will take expert care and provide due consideration to ensure that your loved one gets an appropriate and caring farewell, whilst making the funeral planning process is as painless as possible”. “We will arrange a dedicated funeral service that will provide you and your family with full value, without compromise, a service that is designed to show respect, whilst still maintaining the dignity,
the values and traditions so cherished by those who we serve”.
Francisca has been providing a dignified service to the expat community for over 20 years
“We will also ensure that every life tribute is distinctive, personal and affordable, in honouring to the full a life that has been lived”. In providing a 24 hour service, throughout the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia, PF Samper can be providing you with that care and support within an extremely short space of time. Francisca will immediately respond to your call and while you are able to grieve with dignity she will quickly take charge of all the initial arrangements. “If you have a previously organised funeral plan we will closely liaise with your provider but if you are without such an agreement we will make all the initial arrangements for you, and unlike many similar companies here in Spain we will not demand any payment in advance”. The deceased will be prepared to lie in repose in our own private chapel, as detailed arrangements, with either you or your family, can then be left to a more appropriate time. One aspect that Francisca does warn of are the varying conditions applied by different funeral directors and Tanatorias. “Whichever company you use you must always make sure that you are completely satisfied with the costs and the arrangements, and if in any doubt do not sign any papers”.
“T
his is particularly important” she says “when the deceased has passed away in hospital, many of which have their own preferred agents.” Ultimately, of course, it’s all about trust and peace of mind, something of which you can be assured when dealing with Francisca or her assistant Eric Nicholls. The company has its own private chapel of rest, mortuary and crematorium in Pilar de la Horadada although the service can be organised by PF Samper at any church that the family wishes across the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia. Ministers, flowers and transport can also be organised by PF Samper who will also take care of all necessary documentation and certificates. Likewise the arrangements can be made regardless
The Chapel of Rest in Pilar de la Horadada
of faith and they can also be made to suit the time frame of the family concerned, allowing mourners to fly in from abroad if that is what is required. Whether the service takes place the following day or a week later, unlike many other funeral directors, there is no extra charge. Following cremation the urn will be delivered when required, and in the proper traditions of a genuinely family run business, details regarding payment can be made at a later date. Francisca says, “Our job consists of making sure that the families remember the day of the funeral as a very special occasion and that the loved one who has passed away is provided with the esteem and the respect that every person deserves. Though the life is ended we want to make sure that the memory lingers on”.

Compensation for late diagnosis of cancer T he Valencian Superior Court of Justice has awarded compensation amounting to 100,000 euros to a woman the late diagnosis of her cancer by the Health Centre in Guardamar del Segura
In the judgement the Valencian High Court of Justice also condemned the Generalitat stating that the woman was initially treated for anaemia. The woman, a native of Madrid and now aged 69, had been attending the Guardamar centre since 2011. She saw her doctor on several occasions, complaining of tiredness and fatigue, and was being treated for anaemia and although an analytical blood in stool tested positive in June of that year, the doctor didn’t look beyond his first diagnosis. Sixteen months later, in May 2012, the patient was treated by another doctor at the centre who, observing her blood test, referred the patient for a colonoscopy that led to the diagnosis of colon adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that develops in the lining of the colon or rectum, which makes up the large intestine According to the Patient Advocate, in August of that year the patient then underwent surgery fol-
lowed by chemotherapy. After several treatments the cancer spread to the lung. The tumour continued to progress requiring several further interventions. During the Judicial proceedings a complaint was filed against the doctor, which led to the opening of criminal actions in the court of investigation number 5 of Torrevieja, which concluded with a report by the medical examiner who established malpractice. As a result, the patient then indicted the doctor for a crime of professional recklessness, but pending trial, the defendant died in August 2016.
Baby dies following home birth in Campoverde A baby died in Campoverde last weekend following a home birth in which the 16 year old mother failed to cut the umbilical cord at the time of birth. Neither the young woman’s Estonian parents nor her boyfriend were aware of the pregnancy with the parents first becoming aware when they found the dead child in the bathroom. They immediately informed the police who said they are completely baffled as to how the mother managed to give birth at home without the knowledge of her parents. The room where the baby was found was completely sealed off to enable the police investigation to take place. Funeral services and the Guardia Civil left the house with the baby's already dead body, although it was unclear if the minor or her parents were detained. The area where the events took place was in an urbanisation with numerous isolated houses. The street is in a relatively hidden place, which the police say is the reason why the neighbours hardly noticed what happened inside the house. The incident took place close to a similar occurrence last October when a homeless man found the body of newborn baby in a dustbin in the same urbanisation.

Show you care by donating food this Valentine’s Day F
ebruary is the month of love, but rather than just treating that special someone, optical chain Specsavers Opticas are asking people to show their love for the most disadvantaged in their community by making a small food donation this month. They are collecting non-perishable food for the Spanish Federation of Food Banks in all 8 of their stores on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Mallorca throughout the month and hope residents will get behind the campaign. The Spanish Federation of Food Banks is a non-profit organisation which is fighting against hunger and waste and brings together 56 food banks throughout Spain. Each day they give out 419,000 kilos of food to the very needy members of society and have seen a massive increase in demand in recent years. In order to meet that need, they require donations from individuals, organisations and companies and Specsavers Opticas has taken up the challenge to make a difference this February. From the 1st to the 28th of February, anyone can drop off their food at their local store during opening hours. At the end of the month it will be donated to Alicante Food Bank, for them to distribute in the community via partnerships with local charitable organisations. The Alicante Food Bank would particularly appreciate donations of oil, sugar, drinking chocolate and milk, although any donation is of course welcome. There are Specsavers Opticas stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Guardamar on the Costa Blanca. To find your nearest Specsavers Opticas store visit www.specsavers.es Alternatively you can call The Leader Newspaper on 640 534 964 and we will pick the food up.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Another Number to Remember Our lives are punctuated, as well as defined, by numbers. How many of us can remember them all? We have National Insurance numbers, car registration numbers, mobile phone numbers, PIN numbers and all the rest. For expats in Spain, another number is required that is probably the most important one of them all, the NIE. Expats arriving in Spain and the Canary Islands who intend to remain for a period of time, quickly realise that they need to register with the local Town Hall and police station before they can achieve anything worthwhile; they need an NIE number. These letters stand for ‘Numero de Identificacion de Extranjero’, which means ‘foreigners identification number’. It is a series of numbers currently beginning with the letter ‘X’ and ends with another letter. When we moved to Spain, achieving the exulted status of someone with an NIE was not easy. I recall queuing for several days outside an office in Alicante, only to be turned away when the magic quota for the day, of around 100 NIEs, had been issued. We would then take our place very early the following morning, complete with picnic chairs, a bottle of water and a pack of sandwiches, for the same process to be repeated. It the end, we became so angry that we made a deal with a local car salesman from whom we had planned to purchase a car once we had obtained the NIE. We told him that we would only purchase a car from him if he obtained an NIE number for us. Surprisingly, we both had our NIE within 24 hours of the deal being made.
So why is this number so important? When expats want to open a bank account they will need their NIE number, as well as for buying a car, taking out a contract for electricity and water, taking out insurance, asking for a mobile phone contract or SIM card, buying or renting a property, applying for a mortgage and selling a property. The NIE number is also needed when living and working in Spain, as this is used for completing tax forms, opening a new business, and applying to register as self-employed. In short, you can do very little in Spain legally without it. Foreigners who wish to become resident in Spain must provide proof that they have private health insurance, or proof of paying into Spain’s own insurance scheme for expats that gives access to the Spanish National Health Service; for more details about this, please see my Expat Survival website. In addition, foreigners must be able to prove that they have enough funds to support themselves and their family, or prove that they have a contract of employment, or intend to register as self-employed. Many expats moving to Spain use an English-speaking lawyer to help them to apply for an NIE number if they do not speak Spanish fluently. Nowadays, I usually suggest that newly arrived expats employ a ‘Gestor’ or an ‘Asesor’ who can do some of the nifty foot-

By Bar rie Mahoney work needed for some of the bureaucratic high jumps that are necessary when moving to Spain. An NIE is usually produced swiftly and without complication, assuming of course that the correct paperwork is available to allow this to happen. Expats can, of course, do this for themselves, but they need to be able to speak good Spanish in order to understand and complete the process. An NIE number can be applied for at any foreigners’ office and some police stations, which are listed on the Direccion General de la Policia website. It is important to carefully check exactly what documents are needed, as these vary from region to region, between offices, as well as between the members of staff dealing with the application! It is necessary to complete a form requesting an NIE, the ‘Solicitud de Numero de Identidad de Extranjero y Certificados’, known as EX15, which should be presented with a passport size photo of the applicant and a photocopy of the passport, but the original passport always needs to be shown as well. Usually a date is given when the NIE can be collected from the office, and applicants are also given a form to take to a bank to pay the current fee for completion. The proof of payment given by the bank is then taken to the foreigners’ office where the precious NIE certificate can be collected. Some regions insist that the applicant visits the foreigners’ office at least for collection. Application times vary across the Spanish regions, but these offices should be able to give an approximate timescale. Many expats may wish to undertake tasks such as this for themselves, since it is all part of the expat experience and gives a fascinating insight into life in bureaucratic Spain. It can also be an amusing experience, if they participate in the right frame of mind and do not exhibit anger or frustration at the inevitable delays or requests for yet another document. My last piece of essential advice is to stress the importance of always taking along a picnic chair, bottle of water and a pack of sandwiches – just in case! Singles competition Thursday 2nd Feb: There have been a few late entries which the committee have allowed given that there was a change of date for the competition, originally scheduled for 19th Feb, and not all players were aware. There will now be 14 men at each of the 2 venues, Hub and Tavern and 13 ladies at the Hen’s Teeth and at the Ale House. Captains and organisers will be sent an email to show how the draw will done to get down to a final 4 players from each venue going through to the quarters finals on 6th April. Rescheduled Matches to be played before 9th Feb: There are still a few rescheduled games to be played by the 9th Feb at the latest and captains are urged to draw together whatever players they have to complete the matches from the first half of the league as the committee has ruled that no points will be awarded for unplayed games, no matter who asked for the rescheduling. Things are starting to get a little out of hand with teams with lots of signed players claiming that they only have 3 players and the dog available! The committee will be clamping down for the 2nd half of the season- be warned!
The cats took the first triple with with Lelsley EAGLES! (68, 60, 88), Cap’n Poo schofield (100, 60) and Hildy-do-Da’s 59, 85, D10. The club was sorry to hear this week the sad news of the death of Terry Worth who had recently returned to England. Terry was a club member for many years with his wife Sue. Our commiserations to his family. Both the Apollos and the Pioneers had good results this week with The Apollos keeping up their winning run with a narrow 8-6 home win against San Miguel Comets the overall shots being 111-95. There were good wins for Irene Laverick, Ramsey Sinclair and Brian Gardiner 25-11,Dawn Taylor, Norman Adcroft and George Richardson 27-12 and Dave Davies with Mike and Florence Edwards 20-14.The Pioneers visited Emerald Isle Saturns and had their best win of the season winning on all rinks and therefore getting the maximum 14 points with a shots difference of 123-70.Best winning rinks were Rod and Ann Edgerton with Gordon Dall 27-10, whilst Ken Stringfellow, Alan Ralph and Johnnie Ryder won 20-11 and Jean James, Tom Heaslewood and John Porter won 19-10. On Wednesday we travelled to San Miguel and came away with a creditable draw 6-6 with the shots being a close 77-82.With 5 shots changing hands in favour of San Miguel on the final end of one rink the result could have been better in La Siesta’s favour. The winners for La Siesta were Trish Reilly, Dave Laverick, Jim Hudson and Brian Fraser winning 18-10,Ann Edgerton, Pat Reilly with Mike and Florence Edwards 18-16 and Sheila Chorley, Brian Gardiner with Val and Tony Dalton clinching victory on the final end 14-13. In the Fed 4’s the Hoopoes had an exciting home draw 4-4 against San Luis the shots margin being 54-53 in our favour. Neither the Explorers nor the Pathfinders had a good Monday. Explorers found their way to San Luis to face the Trekkers and unfortunately lost 10 – 4. Shirley Hadaway, Arthur Cronk and Reg Jackson were worthy winners by five shots whereas Mike Stone, Jim Manning and Janet Parsons did very well winning 30 – 12. The Pathfinders found their way to Emerald Isle and wished they hadn’t as they went down 12- 2. Having said that there was a couple of close games, John Withers’ rink losing by just one shot and Dave Taylor by three. Our winning rink was skipped by Terry Perchard plus Peter Bailey and Angie Butler. So well done to them. The Dolphins had a rearranged game over at Country Bowls with the Geckos and lost by two points overall. Some close matches but the two winning rinks were John Rae, Dave McGaw and Jeff Halfhide and the other rink not only won but got us the overall shot difference with a 33 – 4 drubbing so well played Brian Duff, Martin Butler and Allan Wilcock. Another rearranged game was the Winter League away at La Siesta. As they say a six pointer with both at the wrong end of the league. We did well and came away with 8 points having gained the overall shots. Thanks to all who played on a cold and windy day and more thanks to the three winning rinks of Dave Hadaway and his three girls, Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons followed by the Captain’s wife, Shirley with Phil Pape, Steve Douglas and Ann Stone who won on the last end and our highest winning rink were the Armitages and the Taylors 21-9. Second Winter League game this week, this time at home to El Cid. We came out the winners by 8 points to 4. The Lathams, Pete Parsons and Kathy Manning had a good win then came the Hadaways, Dave with his girls again, that’s Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons had the highest winning rink. Shirley with Phil Pape, Steve Douglas and Anne Stone won on the last end. The Berleen of Alex Whyte, Jim Freeman, Mike Surch and Dave Bulfield had an emphatic win 34 – 13. PS I was not last off the green. The Sharks swam in their own ocean and chopped down the Greenland Oaks 12 – 2. Great stuff. Alan Castle, Phil Pape and Janet Parsons were in splendid form winning 41 – 6. Shirley Hadaway, Dave O’Sullivan and Hilary Cronk weighed with a 23 – 9 win. Dave Lewis, Jim Manning and Margaret McLaughlin and Alex Whyte, Jim Reeves and Kathy Manning won. Roy Hart, Peter Parsons and Andy Bartlett scraped home by one shot. Unfortunately the Seagulls had their wings trimmed away to the El Rancho Mustangs. Oh dear 12 – 2 down. Last Wood Latham managed to pull off our only win with laudable help from Wendy Latham and Barbara Forshaw. After the game Pat Davis presented Wendy and Barry with the Bowls Bag they had won. The Dolphins fared a little better at San Miguel Jaguars and managed to get two points more than the Seagulls. John Withers, Jeff Halfhide and Shirley Withers plus Martin Butler, Garth Slater and Trevor Hancock both won.

El Rancho Bowls Club. The week started with The Pintos playing host to The Emerald Isle Neptunes, on wet mat with a stiff varying wind, making play a little tricky. The Neptunes were a little let down by late unavailability of players and were a rink short despite attendance of reserves, as well as difficulty of some, in finding line and length. Pintos were able to take all the rinks and the overall shots by an appreciable margin. In the afternoon The Broncos entertained The Eagles from Vistabella and turned in another good result for El Rancho, good play enabled them to take full advantage of the home rink in tricky conditions to take 5 rinks and draw the other, with a good shot difference. On Friday The Mustangs played host to La Marina Seagulls, who are always good company and may struggle to adjust to the fast mat, but never complain. The Mustangs took advantage of the home mat to take the rinks 5-1, with losing rink being a close tussle. A good battle and good fun all round. Irene Thomson, Jim Taylor and Eddie Thomson 28-7. Ann Taylor, Malc Sykes and Jim Gracie 23-16. Bob Morgan, John Skipper and David Whitworth 20-12. Henry Ryder, Jan Bright and Richard Lee 16-18. Judy Foley, Keith Cunningham and Geoff Jones 21-11. Barbara Jones, Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 34-11. Meanwhile The Raiders visited La Siesta to play their Golds and played very well to come away with 2 rinks, always a good result away from home. Helga Schiffmann, Diane Yates and Gary Newson 25-13. Ann C Taylor, Shirley Edwards and Bob Taylor 13-21. Pam Harris, Graham Day and Brian Harris 13-22. Gill Bartlett, Bob Easthope and Rob Clark 22-18. Ria Dukker, Tricia Elsam and Richard Needham 6-36. Edward Elsam, Tony Robinson and Keith Longshaw 7-24. book, it will be the Clere 'Green Book.' Launched on the European Tour in 2015, it was used at the Scottish Open by winner Ricky Fowler, and copies are now cropping up everywhere. The Green Book enables players to predict the direction of roll for their putts. Data is collected beforehand with high precision scans which enable putting surfaces to be measured within a 1/2mm accuracy. Each scan consists of tens of millions of individual laser points which are then converted into illustrations, giving clear information about the green slopes. And they still make quadruple bogeys. THE WORLD SUPER 6 Perth golf tournament is being held at Lake Karrinyup Country Club, from 16–19 February. Co-sanctioned by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour, World Super 6 Perth will introduce a new format for a top tournament, with three rounds of strokeplay, before the top 24 do battle in a six-hole knockout match play. Big names are expected to enlist, or Euro Tour CEO Keith Pelley, who spends his time dreaming up new ways of dragging golf into the 21st century, will have something to say to them.
JUSTIN ROSE played in the Sony Open in Hawaii because of a new rule requiring PGA Tour members to add at least one tournament they had not played in the previous four years to their season. It was worth the effort, he came second to Justin Thomas who was on a roll after winning the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua the week before. In Abu Dhabi, Dustin Johnson made a birdie and an eagle in his final three holes at the HSBC Championship but couldn’t quite catch Southport’s Tommy Fleetwood who stopped tripping over his hair long enough to win with a 17 under 67. These golfers’ names must be a nightmare for the commentators; Dustins and Justins, at least they can’t mistake Hideki Matsuyama. COMING SOON to a golf course near you: The Evolve Tour 2017 Winter Series; 4 events starting 12th February, begins with a 3 day event at Lo Romero on February 12th, followed by La Serena and Hacienda Riquelme. The Evolve Pro Tour has become one of the most popular development tours in Europe, many competitors progressing to the Challenge Tour and European Tour. SAID TO BE AIMED at golfers of all abilities, Callaway’s Great Big Bertha Epic driver is “outstandingly forgiving”. It features Jailbreak Technology (JT) which uses two titanium bars (jail - bars Geddit?) to directly connect the crown and the sole, allowing the face to take more of the load at impact and spring more powerfully, Speed Step Technology (SST) which improves airflow giving more swing speed without effort, and Adjustable Perimeter Weighting (APW) with a 17gm sliding weight. Not forgetting higher Moment of Inertia (MOI). Good grief, all these codes, it’s like being in a nuclear sub. The lower-spinning Epic Sub-Zero also has JT and SST plus two adjustable sole weights so golfers can choose either high or low launch and spin. Rory McIlroy experimented with the Sub-Zero at the S.A. Open, although it didn’t prevent his losing to Hartlepool’s Graeme Storm in a playoff. Unfortunately, Rory may not be experimenting with anything for a while after injuring his back (probably lifting his wallet.) LUCKILY FOR RORY, as well as containing all the latest state of the art gym equipment to make golfers look like Charles Atlas, the European Tour physio truck contains three beds to carry out injury assessment and treatment and an ultrasound scanner for on-site diagnosis. No hanging around for 24 hours in A & E for these chaps. Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for repairs and regripping. 638 859 475.
T.M.G.S. @ La Manga (South Course)
WOW! What a difference a week makes here on the Costas, last Wednesday we couldn’t play because of the SNOW, this week we played in short sleeve shirts at La Manga! As always the course was in excellent condition including the superfast greens. It’s curious that this course is not any longer than any of the others that we play, in fact the fairways are more than generously wide and yet on each visit it seems that we fail
to score well, therefore the conclusion is that it must be the speed and undulating greens that must be the reason for this. An example is that a recently retired school teacher managed to just reach double figures in his Stableford round until he reached the 16th on which he managed to make the green in regulation but leaving him a 35 ft. downhill putt with

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. TRUE CHAMPIONS It is often stated that true champions differentiate themselves from the others by the way in which they think. But is there something else needed? As we live or holiday here on the Costa’s we should take a Spanish view of the subject. In his autobiography, Seve Ballesteros stated that “There are many good players but they are not champions in their hearts, they do not have it inside to become true champions”. Take a good, long and hard look at yourself, does this describe you and do you only play golf hoping to win with an element of ‘ Buena Suerte’ or good luck? During the 1979 British Open at Royal Lytham, Roberto De Vicenzo spoke the following words to Seve before his victorious final round: “Tienes las manos, ahora juega con tu corazon” or you have the hands now play with your heart. So there you have it, to be a true champion you need good technique, talent, patience, desire, mental strength, selfbelief and heart. If you aspire to be a true champion you should check yourself against these elements of character required and where you fall short - do something about it. Change something because to continue to do the same things, in the same way and expect different results will only result in failure and frustration. Take action now, you know it makes sense! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Elche’s villain turns hero
Elche CF ............................. 1 Girona FC ............................ 0
R
ober Correo, deemed surplus to requirements at Espanyol last summer, hasn't enjoyed a particularly auspicious loan period at Elche to date. Mediocre performances culminating in seven yellow cards and a red have seen the Ilicitano jury very much hung. Everything changed on Friday night, though, when the Extremeño was on hand, late in the game, to chip in with a priceless contribution to what, in all likelihood, will be Elche's best win of the season. A dismal crowd of 5,766 braved the cold for the less than favourable 8pm kick-off time and were made to wait until almost the very end for something to enjoy. Girona, a strong second place in the Segunda A classification and rightly so, were odds-on favourites to help themselves to three points from an inconsistent Elche presently enduring a patchy run of form. The bookmakers logic was sound, this was a contest between the division's top scorers and one of the worst defences. You feared for Elche's safety. Not so, as things turned out. Elche quickly found Girona well organised and difficult to break down. Chances for either side were few and far between and for the most part the opening forty five minutes, whilst watchable, produced very little by way
of clear cut chances. Much of the action occurred in the middle third of the pitch and although visitor René Román was the busier of the two goalkeepers, he still found time to ask a ball-boy behind the net he was tending for a ball to bounce around. Halftime 0-0 It's almost as though Elche, having spent the opening half probing Girona for weaknesses, then decided to execute their game plan. They were altogether more efficient after the restart. Playing an unaccustomed 3-5-2 to nullify the considerable Catalan goal threat with three centre-backs Alberto Toril, or his scouts, had clearly done their homework – Elche were dealt a blow just before the break with the loss of right wing-back Pedro. His replacement, first choice right-back Correa, slotted in just fine, he even looked the part playing slightly further forward. A couple of times during a much better second-half Elche had the sparse crowd on their frozen feet with crisp passing movements that, while quite exciting to watch, came to nothing. Not many teams have put a very good Girona side under this much pressure but Elche just didn't have the nous to take advantage of all their possession. This being Elche, regular watchers will have been aware that settling for a point close to the end almost invariably means a dropped guard followed quickly by all three points. Step forward Rober Correa. This had the look of goal-less draw from about fifteen minutes out but Elche kept plugging away,

probably more in hope than expectation. Three minutes before the end, lively left sided midfielder Fabián, his head bandaged from an earlier accidental collision - the third similar incident of the game – slung a hopeful cross into the Girona penalty area. Two Girona defenders and their goalkeeper rose simultaneously. You'd have thought one of the trio would have averted the danger. Nope ! Correa also leapt and was the only one of the four to actually make contact with the ball. Quite how much he knew about it was moot, his touch - the
ball seemed to come off his face – was enough to win it for the home side. The way this Elche side are capable of playing there is every chance, between now and season's end, of an opponent being on the wrong end of a hiding. It was never going to be Girona but in the end it didn't need to be. The bare minimum was adequate. Elche now sit eleventh of twenty two with a zero goal difference. They've had that kind of season.

CARP R US The match on 26th January was fished at the El Bosquet complex. With the thermometer on-site showing -1oc at 8.30, we assumed the fishing would be hard. We assumed correctly, although the day warmed up the fish were not really in the mood to feed. Roy Dainty finished first with 8.80kg using pole and bread flake, second was Steve Collins (5.54kg) using pole and bread, third Steve Fell (1.84kg) using pole and maggot and Graham Ledley (1.50kg) was fourth using straight lead and sweet corn, Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-RUs Fishing Costa Blanca. The club is currently looking for new members and anyone interested can contact us through the Facebook page, the website or calling the club secretary, Steve Fell, on 634 379 081.
