M I N I M I S I NG TH E U NC E RTAI NTY Prime Minister Rajoy said that the government will defend Spanish interests in the process that has begun, now that the United Kingdom has officially announced its decision to leave the EU. He also advocated continued progress by the other 27 Member States on the European integration process. Mr Rajoy met in Valletta with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Malta and rotating president of the Council of the European Union, Joseph Muscat, to discuss the United Kingdom's departure from the EU, among other issues. At the joint press conference given by the two leaders following their meeting, Mariano Rajoy referred to the official announcement by the British Government of its intention to withdraw from

the European Union under Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. "I respect the decision but am very sorry it has taken place. Continued on Page 2

I don't think it is good for the United Kingdom in particular, but then nor do I think it is good for the EU as a whole", he said. He explained that the negotiation process that began last on Wednesday must conclude within two years; in other words, by 29 March 2019. On the following day, the treaties of the EU will no longer apply to the United Kingdom unless all Member States unanimously decide to extend the negotiations. Mariano Rajoy stressed that "the Government of Spain and all other European institutions are ready for these negotiations". In this regard, he recalled that an inter-ministerial commission

was set up which has been working for some time and which met on Wednesday morning to study the document presented by the United Kingdom. Furthermore, he issued a message of "calm, confidence and serenity to all Spanish citizens living in the United Kingdom, as well as the British citizens living in Spain", as well as to those Spanish companies investing or trading in the UK and those British companies doing likewise in Spain. The Prime Minister said that his greatest priority during the negotiations will be "to minimise the uncertainty created by the United Kingdom's decision for our citizens, companies and Member States". Mariano Rajoy reiterated that the Government of Spain will defend Spanish interests in these

negotiations. "We want a balanced agreement but we also want - and we said this in Rome - the 27 Member States to continue making progress in the European integration process that has, without question, been one of the most important political operations undertaken on our continent in centuries". Furthermore, he said that Spain will work "closely" with The European Union's lead Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier. "We will maintain unity among the 27 during the negotiations", he said. The President of the Government also said that he wishes to "maintain the closest, most beneficial and fruitful relations possible between Spain and the United Kingdom in the best interests of all citizens".

BIDDING PROCESS FINALLY UNDERWAY FOR CORVERA AIRPORT

The large freight and logistic centre at Corvera airport

M

urcia’s Minister of Infrastructure and Development, Pedro Rivero, chose the massive freight facility at Corvera to formally launch the bidding process last week for the management of the much troubled and long overdue International Airport. In addition to the main airport facility, Minister Rivero wanted to highlight that the successful bidder will also operate all of the areas and services related to the commercial, industrial and logistic sector, such as hotels, petrol stations and long-stay car parks He said that "one of the great attractions of the airport tender is the Area of Complementary Activities, attached to the infrastructure, from where commercial, industrial, Logistics and service companies will operate in an area covering over 600,000 square metres“. Indeed just 24 hours earlier he had been singing the praises of the new facility to over thirty entrepreneurs of the Association of Directors of the Region of Murcia (Adimur), with whom he had held a working meeting. Whilst the area reserved for these complementary activities is built and fitted with public lighting, water and sanitation networks, electricity distribution and telephony and communications it is currently little more than a shell. Rivero explained that the successful bidder will be expected to expand the business potential of the airport by planning and adding these additional services which will represent an attractive additional income. The cargo terminal is expected to become the gateway, both into and out of Murcia, for lots of other countries, including many within the Asian Continent, especially for products relating to the agri-food industry.

These facilities will meet the needs of the region's exporting entrepreneurs, who will be able to benefit from the commercial and intermodal capacity of the new airport. As such the logistics area will combine road and air transport in order to combine the interests of the tourism sector with the needs of the export sector, for which the airport will become one of the fundamental areas of development. The airport itself is designed to accommodate traffic of 3 million passengers per year. It has a main runway of 3,000 meters in length and 45 meters in width, capable of receiving Boeing 747 and 737, and Airbus 340 and 320, which as well as domestic flights will enable it to operate international routes of medium range. Details of the public tender document were published in the Official Bulletin of Murcia. The contract will be awarded for a period of 25 years which the Minister anticipated will earn in the region of 500 million euro during the period of the contract. Interested bidders now have a period of 40 days in which to register their interest after which they will then have a further 2 months to present their documented bids. As such the management contract should be awarded to the successful bidder by the middle of the summer.

Don't LOSE weight- ELIMINATE! And do it the sensible way, with Fast Track Hypnosis! other similar sporting events, you'll undoubtedly have noticed all of the athletes with their earplugs in prior to the start of their own particular event. Some will be listening to music, but others will be listening to a motivational speech. And every time you talk about losing weight, you're programming yourself to lose and ultimately, find those pesky kilos.

By Jonathan Gilchrist

H

aving spent the entirety of my life watching my father, Alan Gilchrist, help thousands of people change their lives through hypnosis, I know how powerful the mind is. I know what it's capable of and yet, it still fascinates me. The more I learn about it, the more intrigued I become. And how can I not be? The human body is capable of incredible things, but it's most powerful weapon is, without doubt, the mind. From the title, you can easily see I'm discussing weight loss and in relation to hypnosis. So why have I chosen those particular verbslose and eliminate? Am I just being particular? A tad pernickety? Well, it could be said that yes, I am. However, where the mind is concerned, I'm not. The difference between lose and eliminate is astounding when taking self-hypnosis into consideration. So, that being said, why would you want to lose weight? When something is lost, don't you have to find it? When your keys have disappeared and you yell at your partner for losing them, don't you demand he or she helps you find them? Think of your children, or your own childhood. If your child was to lose a brand new toy, one that cost a small fortune, wouldn't you demand they find it? You wouldn't purchase them another one, would you? Or if you would, then they're very lucky! I'd suggest you were a small minority! Most children have to find their toy before they can have a new one. As a boy, I certainly wouldn't have been allowed to lose something! But I'm not criticising your parenting skills, merely making the point- for every action, there's a reaction. When something is lost, it must be found. And where the mind is concerned, this small discrepancy is vital. If you want to lose weight, don't bother. Eliminate, eradicate or abolish the weight. But don't lose it! Why? Because if your body loses a few pounds, the mind will simply find them again and you'll end up

So, rather than doing that, why not programme yourself to control your weight and appetite and eliminate those extra wobbly bits for good? With Fast Track Hypnosis, you can do just that.

where you started. Sound crazy? Well, it might do but this lost and found mentality is throttled into us from childhood. We're conditioned to find lost goods and in this case, those kilos that you've starved away, that have caused you to subsist on one lettuce leaf three times a day, your subconscious mind will find them again.

Traditional hypnotherapy has its place. It's effective and in comparison to psychology, it's fast. But, Fast Track Hypnosis is the next evolutionary step. It takes the traditional and using innovative techniques and technologies, condenses it down into a speedy treatment. Where psychology takes upwards of a thousand hours and traditional hypnotherapy around twelve, Fast Track Hypnosis changes lives in four. And in some cases and dependent upon each individual client's circumstances, only one session! Yes, you read that correctly. One.

This is all part and parcel of self-hypnosis. This is where you talk yourself into doing a particular something and is a technique that I actually teach clients as part of the Fast Track Weight Control package. You can lose a lot of weight by dieting, but it's all about training the mind because once you have quit the lettuce leaf diet, or the other weight loss fad du jour, you'll gradually put the pounds back on again. And the statistics don't lie. Over 80% of people who lost weight, will regain it at some point (Study at the University of California) and in some cases, they'll regain more than they lost in the first place! Think of all the celebrities, who with their money, can afford private chefs and personal trainers and yet, have they won the weight war? Women like Oprah Winfrey and Kirstie Alley. They've all yo-yo dieted. And why? Because they lost their weight. They didn't eradicate it.

Fast Track Hypnosis was created by my father, who ran (and still does,) a clinic in Belfast. During the 80's and the troubles in Northern Ireland, he was inundated with traumatized people. Fast Track Hypnosis was the solution to the torment suffered by the thousands of victims who lived through the war and whose lives had been forever tarnished by it. Only when they came to visit my father did that torment dissipate. And that is one of the reasons I chose to follow him into this career path. Hypnotherapy, but more importantly, Fast Track Hypnosis has changed people's lives. And it's a life's work that I want to continue.

The perfect way of describing the importance of choosing the correct verb actually uses another area of hypnosis- sports motivation. Back in the 90's, Steve Collins beat Chris Eubank in the World Boxing Organisation's SuperMiddleweight Title. Collins had been using hypnosis prior to the boxing match and for every punch Eubank managed to score, Collins had been programmed to punch double that number. In actual fact, Eubank managed to place over 300 and guess what? Collins did just as he'd been programmed toover 600 hits!

Weight control techniques using Fast Track Hypnosis will keep you motivated and will free you from the scales. Once we've targeted your appetite control centre and have forced it into shape, so that it only reacts when you're truly hungry, you won't be suffering in silence as appetite pangs tear at your belly. You'll be a healthy eater. Why? Because during the suggestion therapy aspect of the treatment, I'll train you to stop craving junk food. What does this mean? You'll abolish those pounds with a smile on your face.

Having watched the Olympics or

Hypnosis is just the state into which the mind falls, when it's completely relaxed and at ease. It can take a while to tumble into such a chilled state, but with some clever pieces of kit that I use in the session from the US, including audio-visual techniques, this occurs rapidly and suggestion therapy takes up the majority of the session. This kind of therapy is where suggestions are implanted into the subconscious mind. Once awakened, the active mind processes the suggestions and concretes them into place so they become part of your daily life. As a trained hypnotherapist, I've been fortunate to be my father's son! It means these techniques are now a part of my own clinics and of use to my own clients. Fast Track Hypnosis can mean be the difference between losing those pounds for a few days and abolishing them for good.

A few simple words can be the difference between success and failure and if you're as amazed as I am by the mind's capabilities, but more importantly, are ready to start Summer 2017 with a new you, then call me on 691 784 954 or email me: jonathangilchristbh@gmail.com Also, check out my website ; www.jonathangilchristinspain.com Weight Loss & Stop Smoking fast track hypnosis also available in Spanish!

Would you want to cope with organising a funeral in Spain W

hen a close friend or a family member dies, the last thing you need is the worry of complex regulations and the red-tape of a Spanish funeral. At such a difficult time could you or your family cope with organising a funeral in Spain? If not you need look no further than PF Samper, a third generation independent family funeral director, based in Pilar de la Horadada. We know that the death of a loved one is a difficult experience, one that all of us are likely to experience during our lifetime, and when mourning the loss of a friend or a family member, the very last thing you want to think about is the planning of a funeral, a fact that is considerately recognised by Francisca, a long time supporter of The Royal British Legion, who has been helping the expat community from her family run business in Pilar for over 20 years. “At PF Samper”, she says, “we aim to provide only the highest level of personal attention as we ease this process for you and your family. We will take expert care and provide due consideration to ensure that your loved one gets an appropriate and caring farewell, whilst making the funeral planning process is as painless as possible”. “We will arrange a dedicated funeral service that will provide you and your family with full value, without compromise, a service that is designed to show respect, whilst still maintaining the dignity,

the values and traditions so cherished by those who we serve”.

Francisca has been providing a dignified service to the expat community for over 20 years

“We will also ensure that every life tribute is distinctive, personal and affordable, in honouring to the full a life that has been lived”. In providing a 24 hour service, throughout the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia, PF Samper can be providing you with that care and support within an extremely short space of time. Francisca will immediately respond to your call and while you are able to grieve with dignity she will quickly take charge of all the initial arrangements. “If you have a previously organised funeral plan we will closely liaise with your provider but if you are without such an agreement we will make all the initial arrangements for you, and unlike many similar companies here in Spain we will not demand any payment in advance”. The deceased will be prepared to lie in repose in our own private chapel, as detailed arrangements, with either you or your family, can then be left to a more appropriate time. One aspect that Francisca does warn of are the varying conditions applied by different funeral directors and Tanatorias. “Whichever company you use you must always make sure that you are completely satisfied with the costs and the arrangements, and if in any doubt do not sign any papers”.

“T

his is particularly important” she says “when the deceased has passed away in hospital, many of which have their own preferred agents.” Ultimately, of course, it’s all about trust and peace of mind, something of which you can be assured when dealing with Francisca or her assistant Eric Nicholls. The company has its own private chapel of rest, mortuary and crematorium in Pilar de la Horadada although the service can be organised by PF Samper at any church that the family wishes across the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia. Ministers, flowers and transport can also be organised by PF Samper who will also take care of all necessary documentation and certificates. Likewise the arrangements can be made regardless

of faith and they can also be made to suit the time frame of the family concerned, allowing mourners to fly in from abroad if that is what is required. Whether the service takes place the following day or a week later, unlike many other funeral directors, there is no extra charge. Following cremation the urn will be delivered when required, and in the proper traditions of a genuinely family run business, details regarding payment can be made at a later date. Francisca says, “Our job consists of making sure that the families remember the day of the funeral as a very special occasion and that the loved one who has passed away is provided with the esteem and the respect that every person deserves. Though the life is ended we want to make sure that the memory lingers on”.

Hernández Concert attended by just 12 people C.L.A.R.O. has been campaigning for years for a centrally located Cultural Centre for Orihuela Costa. It is a priority, just like the Emergency Services Centre which is still an abandoned building 10 On a cold windy evening there had been no publicity, there was no stage and there were no chairs for the audience

years after the foundation stone was laid. Without a proper cultural centre capable of seating at least 400 people, we will have no significant cultural life on the coast, no music, theatre or cinema and no room for associations to meet and pursue their leisure and social activities. Without a cultural centre we get virtually nothing from the 1 million Euro annual cultural budget which provides lavish cultural activities the year round in Orihuela city. Like the budget in general the annual cultural budget is financed out of the 60% revenue coming from Orihuela Costa taxpayers. The need for a Cultural Centre in Orihuela Costa was dramatically highlighted by the Town Hall’s attempt a week ago to arrange a concert in Playa Famenca with a musical tribute to the Orihuela born poet Miguel Hernandez. The so-called concert was held in the open air on a cold windy night. There was no proper stage and no chairs for the audience. It was badly publicised and only 12 people attended, principally the Coordinating Councillor for the Coast, her paid assistants and followers. Days later the Councillor for Culture organised a concert in Orihuela

A recent concert in Orihuela, with stage and lighting with a nationally known singer and a proper stage, lighting and effects. The contrast could not have been be greater. Orihuela Costa is treated as the poor relation in culture while providing, from our taxes, the main part of Orihuela’s million euro a year cultural budget. (CLARO Press Release)

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

No Smiling Please, We’re British! I’m sure that we have all heard of the British ‘Stiff Upper Lip’, but until recent experiences when attempting to renew my passport I was always unclear as to what this expression really meant. Have you tried practicing one in front of the mirror recently? It really is very difficult. Over the years, I have received emails from expats telling me of some of their experiences and problems when renewing British passports. It all used to be relatively easy for expats. Usually, popping into the local Consulate office, handing over the usual batch of forms, a couple of photos and the fee, and the passports were either processed internally, sent to the British Embassy or to the UK for processing. It usually didn't take too long and there was often very little fuss and bother. The system worked, although it sometimes creaked a little during seasonal peaks of heavy demand. Then there was terrorism, requirements for additional security, biometric passports…and then there was Belfast. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am sure that the staff in the Belfast passport office are a splendid bunch of people, and I am sure that they don't mind a spot of good natured criticism from time to time. Frankly, it seems there are a few staff tucked away in the bowels of the Belfast office who could be best described as ‘Jobsworths’. According to several of my

correspondents, passport applications and renewals have been delayed, returned or refused simply because “your photo did not meet requirements”. We all know that getting a passport photo can be a life or death situation - we just have to get it right, don't we? What do I wear? Is the hair ok? What about the smile? Am I slouching on the kiosk stool? Which is my best side? After all, the passport photo will live with us for around ten years and will determine whether or not we will be treated decently as one of Her Majesty's esteemed subjects or thrown into a grubby jail in a foreign country. The passport and accompanying photo are essential and valuable, and make us real people if we wish to travel. Last week, it was my turn. Instead of popping my passport renewal application into the local Consulate office for it to be processed and returned from Madrid, I am now told that in the interests of customer service and increased security it will now be quicker and simpler for me to apply online, and then send the application to Belfast for it to be returned by courier four weeks later, if I am fortunate. All this for the princely sum of £102 with an incredible range of valuable consular services thrown in as well. What’s not to like? Bargain at half the price.

By Bar rie Mahoney Several correspondents have told me that passport applicants should be very careful not to use the passport photo kiosks that are readily available in most of Spain, because they do not provide photos of the size specified by the UK’s passport office. It was with this warning in mind that I called into a photographic shop to ask if they could provide me with a set of passport photos. The very helpful lady in the shop immediately asked if it was for a British passport. If so, I would have to be very careful as smiling is strictly forbidden. Apparently, applicants from France, Spain, Germany and Ireland are free to smile like Cheshire cats if they wish, but British applicants must look stony-faced into the camera. It took the photographer four attempts before she was satisfied that my photo would be acceptable. Apparently, I looked far too cheerful, and so for the final attempt I used my best ‘cross face’, which I usually reserved for naughty children behaving badly in the playground. Eventually, the photographer was content that my photos would pass the UK test and I was sent on my way. I have now completed my application form and it is ready to post. Whether or not the Passport Office in Belfast will let me have a new passport after reading this article remains to be seen. I also have a hideous passport photo that will only ever be shown to the poor souls checking me in at airport security. My best advice for fellow passport applicants? Just aim for the British ‘Stiff Upper Lip’, and you will be fine. Carp R Us Fishing Club The sixth match of the Spring Series was fished on our fifth different venue in six weeks, thus testing the skills of the anglers in a variety of different conditions and locations. This time we were at the Embalse de Pedrera and after a very foggy start conditions were very pleasant. Mark Foden won with 7.10 kg of carp caught using feeder and sweetcorn just pipping Steve Fell (6.96 kg carp) who was using similar tactics. Third was Peter Boorman with 1.64 kg, his highest finish to date, and fourth was Roy Dainty with 1.50 kg. Peter Boorman would like to give special thanks to Mark Foden for rescuing him when the bank gave way and he fell into the water. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca. The club is currently looking for new members and anyone interested can contact us through the Facebook page, the website or calling the club secretary, Steve Fell, on 634379081

steady leaders, The Hub, but the two teams have yet to play each other, in what could be an epic match on the 13th April. Those busy Bees played a superb away match at el Capitan’s keeping the Cap’s in 3rd place. The Porters win over Las Rosas put them into 4th place this week. In Division B some of the ladies got a bit confused this week as Misfits thought they were playing The Hen’s Teeth and sent 4 of their players ahead to wait for the rest. Luckily we saw Leah before she also headed off from a closed and shut up Sporting Life. All team members eventually made it back home and both teams enjoyed a great night of darts. There was some very good finishing from the Jaguars, who won the first 5 legs in a row but special mention goes to our lovely Lesley EAGLES! who finished her game in the trebles and also the doubles and then checked out on a superb 15, T18, D18 in her singles to give us the win. Captain Patty Poo Schofield was beside herself after yet another win, so much so that she tried to return into the bar without using the open door. The sporting Life was left with a greasy print exactly the same height and shape as Poo’s nose! Meanwhile, downstairs at PB’s, Evo’s waited patiently for the Hen’s Chicks, who had unfortunately all turned up at La Fuente. They scurried to the right venue in time to take an impressive 4 legs from the Division B leaders. The Hen’s Coqs had a more than convincing win over the Queens this week but awarded pocket Rocket Vi Turner the MOTM. The Tavern lads made light work of their neighbours the Hub Hellraisers who remain in wooden spoon position. Don’t worry ladies, you’ve still got two more matches to try and do something about that. Singles Finals: 6th April Next week we have the Men’s and Ladies Singles Competitions, The

Men’s being at the Hub and the Ladies travelling out to El Capitan. Our very own Debbie Wright will be event organiser at the Hub to keep you boys in check, ably assisted by Hubby Dave and Terry Kirby who will help keep scores and draws. Secretary Sim will oversee the draw at El Capitan but then had over the proceedings and chalking to lovely Volunteers Gnasher and Tufty from Porter House.

Fed 4’s Final - North versus South

The final was played at Montemar between the Winners of the Southern League Division A, Quesada Swallows and the Northern League Winners, Javea Green. This is always a closely fought contest which was between the same two teams as last year, but this year Quesada had the edge from the beginning, building up an early lead on two

Rinks, and being very close on the third. This continued throughout the game, although Javea drew ahead on the third rink to make the Final score Quesada 2 and 1 to Javea. The presentations followed, as well as the presentations to San Miguel Mohawks, Winners of Division 2 and La Siesta

Vistabella Open Triples P & M Property Maintenance & Meson Nostrum Sponsor Congratulations to Gary & Carol Thorpe and Bill Pain from Vistabella who were our worthy Champions, playing through nine games to meet Emerald Isle's Jean & Paul Parkes and Ian Brewster in the final, the final was played over eight ends with Bills team going on to win 10-3. with skip David Jenkins played another Emerald Isle team consisting of Mel & Colin Highland and John Pooley, this was to decide for the third & fourth place, also played over eight ends with the Vistabella team winning 8-4 resulting in a very good tournament for Vistabella. Congratulations to our winners and all the finalists well done and thank you to everyone who took part in the event. Sharron Kirk, Mo Foulcer for doing their sums, Sandra Burrows & Sue Norris for making sure everyone had bought enough raffle tickets, also thank you to everyone who donated the prizes. Thanks also go to Barry Norris, Neil Burrows and the umpires, most importantly to our Sponsors Phil Marchant of PM Maintenance and Meson Nostrum Restaurant. Winter League. Two games this week, first one at home v Quesada and what a fantastic result! A clean sweep across the board for twelve points, all the rinks were extremely close which you would expect at this level. This result saw us at the top of the league mid week...fantastic!! Shots, 89(12) - 65(0) Q. Another game on Friday away at La Marina was a little more difficult, the squad still had three good wins and they also won the long game but another two points would have been appreciated, Shots, VB 85(8) - 77(4) LM. LM won the Berleen. Head to head at home v San Luis on Wednesday who are now above us on shot difference, be up for it...Hokey Cokey! Sponsored by Venture fleet, Rivingtons Restaurant, One-way services & TV Choice.

Two Winter League matches this week and two different results especially for the two Barry’s. On Wednesday we travelled up the motorway to Finca Guila where some of us met old friends and some made new ones. We won by three rinks to two with Colin Armitage, Mike Stone, Mo Kidd and Lynn Armitage winning 17-14. Then there were the Hadaways who both won. Shirley’s four were the winners by 28-14 and she was helped by Phil Pape, Alex Whyte and Ann Stone while the girls once again carried their Captain and leader Dave to the fine score of 25-8. So well done Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons. Now come the two Barry’s both claiming they won the extra two points on the last end to give us the overall shots and an 8-4 win. Both rinks got “stuffed “ but Barry Sadler, Peter Parsons, Mike Smith and Margaret Sadler claim their three shots on the last end won it while Barry Latham, Terry Perchard, Wendy Latham and Carol Smith say that cutting down the three against to one on their last end was the winner. As I am writing this you might guess we did it. So on to Friday when the League Leaders Vistabella came, we were hoping to do the same to them as we did to Quesada but it was not to be. They won on three rinks plus the overall shots but by only eight. They won 8-4. The shining lights were the two Barry’s and, of course, their fellow bowlers. Barry Sadler, Peter Parsons, Margaret Sadler and Mo Taylor won 21-19 and the Scribe won 17-8 with help from Dave Taylor who had a great game plus Wendy Latham and Kathy Manning. Another little argument was did the number of wrong biases mess our shot difference up. Unfortunately nobody wanted to tell me who the miscreants were. Once again the Berleen lead by Alex Whyte with Jim Freeman, Angie Butler and Martin Butler had a fine 21-12 win.

Last weekend saw the last of the Club Competition Finals. Some great bowling with most games going to the last end. Results were: Irene Ward Singles Trophy, Eileen McLaren beat Janet Thomas; David Bentley Singles Trophy, Gary Raby beat Alan Booth: Harry Faulkner Singles, Gary Raby beat Stan North; Ladies Drawn Pairs, Margaret Patterson & Gail Willshire beat Carol Rudge & Ann Eagle; Gents Drawn Pairs Allan Patterson & Bill Brownlee beat Brian Miller & Len Rudge; Ladies 2 Wood Singles, Gail Willshire beat Ros Stockell; Gents 2 Wood Singles, Bob Nesbitt beat Reg Cooper. Congratulations to the winners and well done to all who reached the finals. The Presentation Evening will take place at El Prado on Tuesday 25th April. San Luis Bowls Club By Sheila Cammack We are about to begin the South Alicante Summer League season on 7th but there is still the matter of the Winter League to complete, with 2 matches this week. Wednesday 29th Winter League home to Javea Green; there was some excellent bowling in a really close fought game. Ultimately we managed to win 2 rinks and hung on to win the overall shots 77-76 for 6 points -6. Winners: Lynne Morris, Jo Pering, June & Keith Jones 17-15, Irene Everett, Vic Slater, Peter McEneany, Tom Hill 21-9. The Berleen team of Margaret Morrison, Pam Lockett, Charlie Marigold, Barry Edwards had a great win 2511. The second Winter League match of the week on Friday 31st was home against our near neighbours; La Siesta. After a cloudy start it turned out to be a good morning all round; warm, sunny and a great result 10pts-2, shots 95-62. Winners: Lynne Morris, Jo Pering, June & Keith Jones 18-9, Shirley Verity, Ray Clarke, Jules Pering, Russell Marks 19-16, Ann Holland, Keith Phillips, Sabrina Marks, Mal Hughes 29-7, Kath Reid, Sheila Cammack, Neil Morrison, Scott Malden 22-8. No Berleen team match. With 2 matches to go, this result has kept us in 1st place, on equal points with Vistabella but ahead on shot difference, so the fight is still on! On Monday 27th we had the great pleasure of hosting another touring team; Barwell IBC. It was a friendly game, with good company enjoyed by the players. Although immaterial, San Luis won 4-3. Following our AGM on 30th March, we have a new committee. Sportstalk's Atkinson bags 20-1 big winner Sportstalk hit the bookies hard when saying the David O'Meara trained Bravery was worthy of each-way support on the opening day of 2017 season. Ridden by Daniel Tudhope, Bravery defeated favourite Oh This Is Us, ridden by Ryan Moore by a neck, with Doncha in third place and Gabriel back in fourth in the 22 runner field. The Leader also tipped 3-1 winner Dubawi Prince in the 5.20 at Doncaster. La Casa Tarifa was a winning selection ridden by Joe Fanning over 7 furlongs at Chelmsford. Trained by Mark Johnston, Tarifa obliged at 15-8. Sportstalk’s selections Linguistic (9-4), Rock of America (8-11) and Farook (11-4) were unlucky in defeat, the trio all beaten in photo-finishes. Lincoln Handicap winner Bravery’s trainer David O’Meara said: "Bravery was held up slightly on the far side of the field - to get that win was a real result - it means an awful lot.” O’Meara added of Bravery’s success on the opening day of the 2017 Flat season: “You like to hit the ground running. It's nice to win. It tells you you've probably done the right thing over the winter." Sportstalk were one of the few newspapers who tipped Bravery – with bookmakers

El Raso Golf Society On Friday 31 March 30 members of the El Raso GS assembled at our home course La Marquesa, to play the monthly Stableford competition. With perfect weather for a great day´s game of golf some good scores were returned. The course was in good condition and the green staff had been busy recently preparing for the forthcoming club championship at the weekend. It turned out a good day for the Forbes fami-

Ladies League Singles - The Ladies gathered at Buscavidas, in Los Montesinos, for the annual Ladies Singles Competition. Thanks to Pepe and Campi for hosting the evening. On behalf of the League, I thank you all for your help with the smooth running of the evening. The First Semi-final winner was Elaine Willis and the second Semi-final winner was Bliss Wright. The Final was won by Bliss Wright; who becomes our Ladies Singles Champion for 2017, along with Elaine Willis who becomes this year’s Runner Up. The presentation to Bravery’s winning jockey Daniel Tudhope relieved in saving millions of pounds by the 20-1 winner. Betfair’s Barry Orr said: “Bravery winning ahead of Oh This Is Us was an industry swing of around £40m. Pictures of Bravery will be going up in trading rooms up and down the land!” And Nicola McGeady, of Ladbrokes, said: “It will be remembered as the most important photo finish in the history of betting. “It would have been one of our darkest days - we have dodged an absolute catastrophe. Had Ryan Moore got up on the line to complete the four-timer, it would have been the

worst day imaginable.” Bravery’s jockey Danny Tudhope rode a tactical race when switching over to the far side as soon as the stalls opened. Bravery, who finished tenth in the French Derby, was making his debut outing for O’Meara. Bravery’s win thwarted Oh This Is Us jockey Ryan Moore from adding to a 575-1 treble - having rode the first three winners on the Doncaster card – saving the relieved bookies from a £40m pay-out. “Bravery saved us a monumental pay out,” added Ladbrokes Nicola McGeady.

When I arranged the date for the first of these meetings, some Captains did not attend, saying they did not know about the meeting. As a follow up after this meeting, I sent another email on 9th December clarifying the situation. Therefore, a Meeting is now being arranged during April because we do need to discuss various issues, and at the same time I need to ensure that teams who have not been attending meetings/functions catch up on their documentation and bring missing Result sheets with them. Therefore, Wednesday 19th April is being planned for the next Captains meeting. It is essential that all Captains attend. Details will be issued separately. THE OPTIMA OPTICA TROPHY 2017

La Marina Golf Society We met at the beautiful Font de Llop course to compete for the above trophy ,kindly sponsored each year by optician group Optica Optima. As usual the competition was played under Texas Scramble rules on a Stableford basis. The range of scores was fairly close with only 5 points separating the teams, no doubt a result of the wonderful weather conditions and a course in pristine condition. Winners on count-back with a score of 47 points was the team of Gary Garbett, Jeff Wiszniewski, Geoff Ettridge and Pete "the Fish" Stevenson. Nearest the pin winners were Barry Thorogood (twice), Gary Garbett and John Thompson. Our next meeting is at BonAlba on 13th April ,tee-off time 11.32 ,green fee with buggy 40 Euros. MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Bouncebackability – Part 1’ This is not just the latest jargon but is an element of character required by every competitive golfer. Do you recognise the following golfing situation? You have played well in the weekly stableford and have achieved 20 points after 9 holes. On the short par 4 tenth hole you hit your 2nd shot ‘fat’ and into a bunker where it plugs and two bunker shots and three putts later you have no score. The next hole is a long par 3 and you have geared yourself up and hit a 3-iron over the top of the flag but with adrenaline flowing the ball clears the green and rolls slowly into a water hazard at the rear of the green. How do you feel? At this stage the majority of golfers will have a feeling of anger welling up inside them and their heart will be pounding as if it will burst through their chest. This feeling of anger and anxiety will soon change to one of depression and disappointment, the shoulders slump, the head drops, the walk becomes slower and everything becomes too much effort. Do you know this golfer? Could it be you? What are you going to do about it? Immediately you must start to feel better about yourself and the first thing that you must do is to lift your head, keep your eyes above the horizon and stop looking at your feet as you walk. Before the next tee shot, find a little quiet time for yourself and remind yourself why you are here, for enjoyment and reset your immediate goals. This article will continue next week with remaining in the present. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Supersub Lewis breaks deadlock

Eurogolf and Toffs

CD Torrevieja ................ 1 CF Torre Levante .......... 0

T

hings are looking good over at Nelson Mandela Stadium, for Torry are still very much on target to achieve division 3´s great escape. Last weeks bad defeat at Silla certainly didn´t seem to phase them, for they looked every inch the equal of 9th placed visitors Torre Levante. Back in November, Torry were comprehensively beaten away at Valencia based side, which always seems to be a bogey venue for them. Although serving a ban for his dismissal at Silla, manager Pedreno could still be heard booming out instructions from the stands. Also banned was Martin, whilst both Lewis and Luis Carlos were surprisingly relegated to the bench. Maxi beat Torry´s offside trap on 19 mins, and only a superb last ditch tackle by Calzado denied a goal scoring opportunity. Ex Torry veteran Ruben Suarez sent shivers up Torry fans spines, when 2 mins later he sent a 20 yard free kick a fag paper´s width over the bar. It took fully 32 mins before Torry troubled visiting keeper Kilian, Borja

forcing a save before Duran blasted the rebound into space. Buba came to his sides rescue on 40 mins, saving well with an outstretched leg from visiting striker Garcia. Just before the interval, Borja should really have opened the scoring, but Torry´s front man wasted a glorious opportunity when he shot wide of an open goal from close range. Duran forced Kilian to tip his long range effort over the bar on 52 mins, as Torry started the new half with more vigour and invention in their play. Torre Levante had probably their best effort of the match on 58 mins, when Cristian headed wide from an inch perfect cross from the right. Molina was the next player to miss a guilt edge chance, scuffing his shot on the hour mark, giving Kilian a bread and butter save to make. This end to end encounter had certainly livened up, as first Reyes headed over for the visitors on 62 mins, then Torry´s Borja was guilty of another glaring miss 2 mins later. Mr unpredictable Buba made

another important save on 74 mins, bravely diving at the feet of Max, just as he was about to pull the trigger. Going into the final 5 mins, sensing the kill, Torry threw everything into attack, a move which was to reap just rewards. Pastor could not direct his headed effort into the net, but into stoppage time fortune favoured the brave. Earlier in the half, Pedreno had introduced strikers for defenders, in a bid for that elusive goal. Enter Lewis, who picked up a sweet assist from Pastor, before swivelling then thumping a bullet of a strike past Kilian into the back of the net. Mission accomplished. Mention must be made of referee Navarro, who officiated the match intelligently, and it´s a shame we can´t have him every week.

I have been a member of Eurogolf for over 20 years and in all that time I’ve never known a season when we have had to cancel the competition due to the weather conditions as many times as this season. Last Thursday there was a heavy mist/fog over the golf course making it impossible to see your ball hence we were not able to play. El Plantio 2 Golf Society A pleasant day greeted 20 competitors for the monthly medal on Tuesday 28th March. Despite the holes being only par 3, with most being 140 metres or less, it is still quite an achievement to register a Hole-in-One. The person to claiman 'Ace' today was Keith Smith, who seems to make

a habit of it in the time that the Society has played at El Plantio and before that, at Greenlands. Winning the Competition was Christine Linathan, who has played most Tuesdays during the Winter with the Society, while staying on the El Plantio complex and playing the 18 hole course. This was her last game before returning to glorious Yorkshire. Nearest the pins : Hole 1, Michel Goujon - Hole 6, Ian Craig. Sunrise Colegas 3rd Place - Brian Coupe, Pin Pals Handicap 20 - 59 shots.
