ouncillor Javier Manzanares said on Thursday that the Torrevieja market will move to its new location, behind the Aquapark, on la avenida de Delfina Viudes, on 12 May. He said that the new site would provide far more space to traders and to shoppers, alleviate much of the current
traffic chaos, improve security and make visiting the market a much more satisfying experience for traders and shoppers alike. Continued on Page 2

NEW TORREVIEJA MARKET Continued from Page 1 The 80,000 m2 site will have space for almost 700 pitches, there will be a Local Police checkpoint and there will also be access to public toilets. The move will be the culmination of a project that was first muted in 2010 but has since suffered delay upon delay, caused predominantly by a lack of funds from the Generalitat. There have also been plans and counter plans from the successive councils, as well as numerous modifications to those plans., The councillor said that the move has been welcomed by thousands of Torrevieja residents who, for decades, have endured unimaginable inconvenience simply by living in the neighbourhood of the existing market site. On a weekly basis they have lost their parking spaces for periods in excess of 36 hours, and they have also suffered inconvenience due to a lack of access to their properties, both for themselves and for the emergency services, for visiting repair and tradesmen as well as for their families, friends and relations.
They have also been forced to endure problems of health, early morning noise, closure of roads and a lack of cleanliness throughout the day on every Friday of the year. The move, according to the councillor, will also reduce the traffic congestion that occurs along one of the main access routes into Torrevieja every Friday. The new market area, which has cost more than five million euros to develop, and is also available for other uses such as concerts and fiestas, will open its doors to street vendors at 4 in the morning of 12th May so that they can set up their stalls. A further benefit is that the new site will allow traders with vehicles to park next to their stalls. The gates will then close to traders at 8am after which there will be no further access. Vehicles will not be allowed to leave the site until 2pm with the market site having to be totally vacated for cleaning by 3pm Among the services provided at the new market site will be the Operational Reinforcement Group (GRO) of the Local Police, public toilets with regular cleaning throughout the morning, more than 750 parking spaces on the market site itself,
with hundreds more available in the immediate vicinity. There will also be two taxi ranks, one at each end of the new site, and a new dedicated bus line with 30 stops in the city centre providing a 30-minute transit time to take shoppers to the new location. The venue also has a children's playground and the Town Hall will also provide identification wristbands for children. In addition, 200 waste containers will be distributed to make rubbish gathering and collection much more efficient. At the current market site much of the rubbish generated usually ends up dumped on the side of the road. The new market rules insist that says that traders must "take away as much of their waste as possible." With the new market being situated in a controlled and fenced enclosure this aspect of the new ordinance will be made much easier to control. Councillor Javier Manzanares said he had high hopes about the effect that the move of the market would have. He said that this was an exciting time for the people of Torrevieja. “The market would also be good for local commerce and for the tourist industry.”

FAOC warn of serious hazards in children’s playgrounds President of HELP Vega Baja, Michele Masson, cutting the ribbon with Torrevieja Councillor of NGO’s, Carmen Morate
T
he FAOC (Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela CostaAlicante) say that they are becoming increasingly concerned about the deteriorating, and even dangerous state of many children’s playgrounds on the Orihuela Costa. They say that in many of the parks, much of the equipment is in a hazardous condition, with broken swings and slides, some with protruding nails and screws, rendering many of the playgrounds perilous and unsafe to use. And FAOC have once again authenticated their concerns with photographs taken by their member associations in Villamartin, La Florida and La Regia, which they say shows just a small sample of the problems that affect equipment in playgrounds all over the coast. They also state that many of the playgrounds are over run with weeds and rubble and are seriously in need of ground maintenance. FAOC have been pressing the council to take urgent action for some time in bringing the coastal playgrounds up to a minimum level of serviceability, but to date there has been no response from the Orihuela Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana,
or his Government team, to accede to or even acknowledge the FAOC request. The issue was included in the proposal for the 2017 Participative Budget, which was presented by FAOC to the mayor in September of last year, and even at that stage it was noted as being a matter that was in need of urgent council attention. A year earlier a motion had been presented to the council by the municipal group Ciudadanos. Indeed the motion was unanimously approved in the Municipal Plenary of November 26, with the purpose of repairing and refurbishing those playgrounds most in need. A year and a half later absolutely no progress has been made. FAOC say that their photographs and their regular reports clearly highlight the dangerous and abandoned state of many of the Costa’s playgrounds, many of which are completely unfit for the use to which they are intended. One resident told the local press, “I feel like we’ve been left behind and forgotten about on the Orihuela Costa.” “We have been promised playgrounds that are suitable for our children to use, but we have nothing. The playgrounds that we do have are dangerous, run down and covered with weeds.” “The mayor and his council are simply using the residents of the Orihuela Costa as a ‘Cash Cow.’

Rugby tourists fundraise for RBL T
ouring the Costa Blanca recently were the Cannock Ladies (Lionesses) Rugby Club who, along with their male colleagues, played friendly fixtures against Elche Club Rugby Union over the St George’s Day weekend. The group of over 50 players and staff were based on the Costa Blanca where they also hoped to benefit a local charity. As the trip was partly sponsored by the Leader Newspaper, the editor of which just happens to be the Chairman of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, it came as no surprise when the party announced that they wished to contribute to the local poppy appeal. They did so in the rather unusual manner of taking a poppy collection box and using it as their ‘swear box’ for the duration of the tour, the proceeds of which amounted to 154 euro, a welcome addition to the Orihuela Costa fund. Here the Lionesses are seen with RBL members Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale who were visiting the Orihuela Costa as part of the Branch’s St George’s Day celebrations.

Orihuela Costa encouraged to develop International Fiestas
More than sixty representatives of communities, groups and associations based in Orihuela Costa met last week at the Club Nautico de Campoamor for a working breakfast organised by the Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez. The theme of the presentation was that of International Fiestas, the development of fiestas amongst the 94 resident nationalities on the coast, and the outlining of procedures and
subsidies to build and support.
Speakers at the meeting included the Tourism Deputy, Eduardo Dolon, as well as the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez. They were joined by the Presidents of the organising committees of the Moors and Christians and the Semana Santa festivals which are both long established and very successful celebrations in the local area. Emilio Bascuñana said that the initiative was a great opportunity for the International Community to celebrate their individual cultures and customs on the Orihuela Costa which could bring many thousands of additional tourists into the area. Eduardo Dolón, meanwhile, said that the project would also have the full support of the Provincial Government "that allow us to seasonalise our fiestas, maintaining a steady flow of visitors throughout the year." Giant Ferris wheel for Torrevieja Marina R epresentatives of the Dutch company SkyView Attractions visited Torrevieja on Saturday to study the possibility of locating a giant Ferris wheel in the port area. The interest of the firm in promoting this project was revealed by the councillor of Urbanism and Tourism, Fanny Serrano, in a press conference, although she did say that at this stage the visit was only a proposal.
SkyView Attractions already has many similar installations across Europe and after ruling out Benidorm as a possible location, because of a lack of space, has recently moved its interest to Torrevieja. Both the company and the Torrevieja Council have agreed that if the
project is to go ahead the most suitable site would be in the area that attracts the highest number of visitors, somewhere along the seafront promenade adjacent to the Torrevieja port area.
The hugely popular London Eye
Serrano said that permission must first be obtained from the Generalitat after which the company and the council must agree on a site and the payment of an annual fee to build and to operate the concession. The councillor said that the popularity of such installations has grown tremendously since the introduction of the London Eye, 135 meters high, and if erected in Torrevieja it could quickly become a major tourist attraction.
Charities collaborate in support of the community
T
he second meeting of a group set up by Michele Masson, President for HELP Vega Baja was held last week at Quirónsalud hospital. The group, known as CARE (Communication And Resource Exchange) was formed to bring together presidents from local charities with the aim of sharing information, ideas and resources. Michele said “the group is working really well and the feedback has been positive. It provides an opportunity for charities to share experiences and offer possible solutions to situations that others are facing. Rather than working in isolation, we come together to see how we can support each other which ultimately will mean that those people in the community that need support from any of our charities will benefit. We have covered many issues even in the short period that we have been meeting and decisions have been taken that we believe will make a difference ultimately to those we aim to help. Volunteering is great and I am sure we would all recommend it, but having responsibility for a charity can also be daunting so knowing that you have the support from not only your own team but others in
similar situations is a bonus”. A charity awareness day is planned for later in the year where people will be invited to meet representatives from local charities in one venue to find out more about the charities and, of course, find out about volunteering too! More details to follow…. Charities are very reliant upon their fundraising and the group have agreed to support each other with advertising events and will include details on facebook pages etc. Events organised so far include: LOCAL CHARITY EVENTS DIARY MAY 11th:

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Inflationary Gin
I
t is strange how fashion works, with what is ‘in’ and what is ‘out’ endlessly changing on what often seems like a whim. However, one piece of news took my attention this week; news that many expats will not be surprised to read. I have quite a lot of time for Mark Carney, that earnest, Canadian banker who currently presides over the Bank of England as its governor. It is true that before, during and following the Brexit referendum, Mr Carney had a turbulent time. Accused of being too pessimistic in his forecasts by some during the EU referendum, with the more outspoken of his critics calling for his resignation. Still, he has remained calm under fire and even managed to oversee the release of that rather lovely new one pound coin. With a bit of luck, he should remain happily in his post for the next few years. I like the Governor’s grounded, and clearly spoken approach. I have previously felt that his predecessors would either drop off to sleep mid interview, or send me into a comatose state when listening, but the present Governor does seem to have his eye on the ball.
However, I do feel that he would do well to take a little advice from the hordes of gin drinkers, both at home and abroad. Yes, gin is most certainly ‘in’. We hear quite a lot about inflation and discussions about whether interest rates will rise or fall, which can be very boring. I am very concerned that Mr Carney currently fails to mention the price of gin when debating these very serious inflation forecasts. According to experts on the subject, the price of gin can seriously affect inflation statistics, so much so that the Office of National Statistics will shortly include the nation’s favourite tipple in the ‘typical shopping basket’ that is used to calculate inflation. Gin has been added because sales of it have boomed in recent times, which I am told is because of the 40 or so new distilleries that have opened since 2016, as well as effective, persuasive marketing. Reportedly, gin has been HM Queen Elizabeth’s favourite tipple for many years. The British public has followed her lead, and drunk more gin than ever in recent years, notching up a 16 per cent increase in sales that has now reached an impressive £1 billion. Some experts claim that gin is needed to smooth the way, as well as easing the pain, as the country heads towards Brexit. Although gin has been a popular member of the British drinks cabinet for many years, it was nowhere near as popular as other spirits, such as vodka that used to be particularly popular in nightclubs. It seems that vodka has now fallen out of fashion, and gin has taken its place. Of course, this is not news to the thousands of expats who have cherished their G&Ts on their sun terraces for many years, and has become a staple part of their liquid diet. As far as that eternal ‘shopping basket’ is concerned, I was saddened to read that

brake pads, along with menthol cigarettes and nonsmartphone handsets have now been removed. I would have thought that decent brakes were essential in light of all of that gin flowing around the country. I should stress that the UK’s newly revised ‘shopping basket’ will not only consist of gin, but that children’s scooters, cycle helmets, cough syrup and half-chocolatecoated biscuits will now also be added. The logic of the ‘shopping basket’ escapes me, but I am sure that that nice Mr Carney will find it all very helpful. As for gin, personally I cannot stand the stuff, but I am always happy to defend the virtues of a nice bottle of malt. Junction Jackals v Porter House 9 -3 The Jackals impressive record was not unblemished this week. They enjoyed a great night of darts against their worthy opponents, the Porters, but it was the Jackals all the way until the last pairs game. There were some good scores by both teams, notably 2 x140 by Lee Maiden in his pairs game with Nigel Elvery, the latter of which got the finish on S2-D1. Lee also did a 3 dart out in the 2nd triples with S18-D18-D16. Peter ‘Tufty’ Ayres was no stranger to the 19’s and had several big scores whenever he played but his S20-D10 got the Porters their first leg just before half time. In the singles, captain Phil de Lacy racked up 100, 81 and then did a 3-dart check-out with T5-S15-D20 against Yvonne Roofrack.

Graham Todd game on all guns blazing scoring 89, 117, 92, 57 and out on D5 against Jackal Andy Rutter. Landlord Andy Gildea fared better against Brian ‘Gnasher’ Nash with 60, 81, 60, 79 and D16. Jackal Alex Nikolov, doing it his way, with 94, 94, 54, 68, 84 D8 saw off the efforts of Jeff Ward and Hugh Galloway was unlucky not to finish first against Tufty who got the 3rd leg for the Porters. Lee Maiden put the match to bed with 60, 60, 100, 99 D20 and was justly awarded MOTM for the Jackals and Tufty deserved that title for the Porters. Meanwhile a text from El Capitan saying they had won their game 10-2 against Ale House put a slight dampener on the Junction’s celebrations as it meant that the Jackals and El Capitan finish the season in joint second place. The committee have decided to award both teams a trophy and a 6 month share of the perpetual trophy for the bar. However, next week see the finals of the Team KO competition and this will be between the Jackals and El Capitan- there can be no draw for this one! Finally, on behalf of the committee and all the players we would like to send our sympathy and condolences to the family of Peter Cliffe who passed away suddenly last weekend. Peter played for Massey’s and will be sadly missed by his team mates and friends in the league.
Carp R Us Fishing Club LUKE DONALD unfortunately missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open, but the previous week, thanks to his sublime short game, he came second by one stroke to Wesley Bryan at Harbour Town. Local boy Bryan rallied from four-shots down to win the RBC Heritage with a 4-under 67. Actually, seeing Wesley afterwards in the Plaid Jacket, Luke was probably quite relieved he didn’t win. THE EUROPEAN TOUR’S new 6-hole event ‘GolfSixes’ takes place from 6th-7th May at St. Albans Centurion Club, with 2-man teams from 16 different nations competing. Shown on Sky Sports, the first day will see the teams split into four groups of four similar to the UEFA Champions League stages, before the top two teams from each group progress to quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The format is Greensomes Matchplay. “It will be a fun-packed event, with everyone involved,” enthuses CEO Keith Pelley, sounding like Maplins’ Gladys Pugh rounding up contestants for the knobbly knees contest; “There’s sure to be a great atmosphere as they battle for national pride, players will wear microphones and interact with the fans.” (Oh joy) BELGIUM’S THOMAS PIETERS won three European Tour titles before turning 25. Coming 4th in the Rio Olympics earned him one of the 2016 Ryder Cup wildcard picks and at Hazeltine he played a blinder, finishing 4-1-0. Thomas, however, is a frustrated Belgian. He feels he should have won at least three majors by now. His patient coach Pete Cowen says: “Thomas is hungry.” One day Thomas will look back and appreciate coming 4th in his first Masters. Just not right now. JON RAHM RODRIGUEZ (22) from the Basque country, another hungry player, has a touch of Seve about him. Ballesteros learned the game with a second hand 3
iron on the beaches of Pedrena, Rahm honed his skills on a run-down local range. He shares Seve’s typically Spanish swashbuckling character, (and a tendency to self-detonate.) He learned English by rapping along to Eminem, which must make it interesting for anyone interviewing him. In the WGC Matchplay, 6’ 4” Rahm pushed Dustin Johnson to the brink, matching him yard for yard off the tee to miss out by one shot. He won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January. Now he only needs to win a championship via the clubhouse roof and the car park. PING’S PLD2 Ketch putter has a unique design – camouflage. Thanks to permodizing - incorporating photorealistic 3D images onto metallic surfaces - Ping can now put different designs on their putters. Not sure camouflage is such a good idea. If you throw a camouflaged putter in the bushes in frustration you’ll have a hell of a job finding it again. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS Dye Designs are planning a new 18 hole course near Edgeware, N. London. Perry Dye, the eldest son in the dynasty which designed the Stadium course at Sawgrass, Whistling Straights, and Harbour Town golf links among others, says plans include an island green on the 7th hole similar to the 17th at Sawgrass. The 7,000 yd course will offer multiple tees and reasonable prices. If you can’t make Florida for the TPC don’t despair, ‘Dye London’ will be ready in about three years. TITLEIST HAVE GONE “One step beyond.” With their Footjoy Boditrak test you are wired up to a contraption with pressure sensors and a mat which highlights where you put pressure on the ground during the swing and determines whether you need a more stable or more mobile shoe.
Wesley Bryan in the pink.
Nike have gone one step further. They have come up with a shirt that improves your swing. Apparently the tight elastic material in certain key areas helps guide correct repetitive movements like a golf swing, and activates muscle stimulation to boost performance. Even better, the shirt doesn’t charge for coaching. I think I need to go and lie down. RORY McILROY and his bride (plus golf clubs?) are on honeymoon in Barbados. The press are calling it the “Wedding of the Decade,” but don’t tell Pippa. Until next time, Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs. Tel: 638 859 475
Carp-R-Us fished the final round of the Spring Series on the Eden stretch of the Rio Segura. The pegs get overgrown very quickly and some clearing was required before the match started on a cool, damp day. As with the previous series, two anglers were effectively having a fish-off to win the series, Tom Marshall and Steve Collins. First in the match was Graham Ledley with 3.16kg of carp caught on the feeder and corn, a fifth different winner in the last five club matches. Second was Roy Dainty with 2.30kg using the same method, third was Steve Fell with 2.24kg using pole and bread and fourth was Roy Buttress with 1.98kg. Tom pipped Steve by 20g to win the series by one point 204 to 203, congratulations to him. In all the ten match series threw up nine different match winners, well done everyone. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

La Siesta Bowls Club by Rod Edgerton SAN LUIS BC The Champion of Champions competition took part recently and our Ladies Pair of Dawn Taylor and Hilary Clarke did very well to reach the quarter finals whilst Irene Mangan missed out in a place in the final of the Singles by a single shot. The Triples league saw our Wasps in the Spitfire division visiting San Miguel Christians with the result going in favour of the Christians by 121-106. Dawn and John Taylor won from start to finish 23 - 12 whilst Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards hung on for a draw. Irene Laverick, Sue Jordan and Brian Gardiner had a close match eventually losing by 2 shots. Jo Elkin, George Richardson and Brian Fraser came back with a 4 and a 3 shots on the last 2 ends to lose by 3 shots. The final result an 11-3 loss. Thanks to our friendly team of Joy Gardiner, Ramsey Sinclair and Alex Morrice. On Friday in heavy rain and with weather more akin to winter than Spring the Wasps visited Quesada to play the Blenheims. Due to the inclement weather the match was decided after each rink had completed 12 ends. Each team won on three of the six rink with the best trio for La Siesta were Joy Gardiner, Norman Adcroft and Sue Jordan who won 15-7, thanks to a score of 5 on the penultimate end. Beryl Styring with Florence and Mike Edwards lead from the start to win 13-6 whilst Irene Laverick with Pat and Brian Harman picked up 4 shots on the 8th end to push home their advantage to win 14-9.The overall shots went to Quesada by 74-64 thereby taking the pts 8-6. In the Harrier Division the Hornets are unbeaten and lead the league. with their latest 10-4 home win against San Luis Hercules by 108-100. The winning rinks were Jo Kocsis, Sue Mahomet and Pat Reilly 249, Hilary Clarke, Trish Reilly and Vic Mahomet 21-13, Wendy Ralph with Barbara and Jack Cooper 20-18 and finally Jean James, Alan Ralph and Jonnie Ryder 18-16. In the VCL league we Emerald Isle Dukes and lost by a narrow 114 shots to 105 with the rinks shared. The points being 8-6 in the Dukes favour. The winners for La Siesta were Irene Mangan and Mike Edwards in their singles matches whilst our Triples of Joy and Brian Gardiner with Jean Cooper secured a narrow 19-18 win. Lastly some sad news to report. On Friday evening 21st April our friend and fellow bowler Roy Millward passed away in Torrevieja Hospital after a short illness. Roy was a keen bowler playing in league and internal matches. He will be sadly missed by our club and many colleagues at other clubs. Our thoughts go out to wife Sheila & family. Rest in Peace Roy, you will be remembered always.

Champion of Champions Tournament. In the finals at Greenlands, on Saturday 22nd. Tom Hill & Sabrina Marks played the mixed pairs against Jason Prokopowycz and Carol Broomfield. As expected there were some very close ends but Jason and Carol came out winners. The Men’s singles final was between Russell Marks and Derek Toozer. Russell’s semi final was a great display of bowling but the final went to an even higher level. Every shot was closely contested by both men and just as it looked like the shot wood had been played the next one beat it. Russell played very well but Derek was simply outstanding and was a well deserved winner. It was a great game to watch and will be hard to match in the future. Our rinks team of Steve Simmons, Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Russell Marks won through to the final, on Monday morning. Unfortunately they lost to Geraldine & Gordon Fisher, Janet Gatwood & Roy Mercer. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to our players for reaching 3 finals. Spitfire Division: SL Wellingtons Monday 24th – BYE. Harrier Division: SL Hercules, Monday 24th home v Horadada Hawks, some tight games to get close on shots; 101-106, 4pts-10. Winners: Helen Hammond, Dave Tilley, Scott Malden 28-11, Roger Inwards, Danny McErlean, Harry Epsom 14-14, Doug Beattie, Chris Jackson, Fay Beattie 14-14. Tuesday 25th away v LS Hornets, again a very close fought match with shots 100-108, 4pts-10. Winners: Helen Hammond, Chris Brooks, Scott Malden 31-13, Roger Inwards, Danny McErlean, Harry Epsom 13-12. Wednesday 26th VCL, SL Falcons home v VB Vikings; as expected a hard fought match, points 4-10, shots 87-110. Winners: 3’s Bill Webb, Neil Morrison, Derrick Cooper 17-15, 4’s Jan Pocock, Lynn Morris, Sue Cooper, Brian Pocock 14-13. We are currently looking for new members to join us for the 2017/18 winter season. We are aiming to enter an extra team this year in the leagues. With 4 teams there should be plenty of games for everyone. We welcome all bowlers, from the most experienced to those who want to step up from purely “social” bowling to the league challenge. We are a very competitive but friendly club and Casa Ventura itself is a hub for the local area, offering a wide range of non-bowling activities. El Rancho Bowls Club Our bowling week began with the Buckskins entertaining Country Bowls Badgers in the Harrier Division and put in a good effort, sharing the rinks and taking the overall shots against a strong opponent. On Wednesday our VCL fixture was at Horadada, playing well and taking both the singles. Several of the others were close, particularly the pairs, losing by the just the one shot after dropping a 7 early on and losing the overall shots by just 3. Ladies singles: Jane Hamill 21-10. Mens singles: Richard Lee 21-11. Pairs: Jim Gracie and David Whitworth 15-16. Trips: Pam Harris, Mick Ager and Merv Armstrong 9-24. Rinks: Ann Taylor, Malc Elmore, Jim Taylor and Stew Hamill 10-15. Rinks: June Whitworth, Bob Easthope, John Skipper and Carolyn Harris 15-18. Friday found the Buckskins playing at Horadada, as in the VCL, the weather not being seasonal of course, with some rain and a stiff wind causing a little consternation. But they are a good bunch and we enjoyed the morning, again taking two rinks and again we saw good bowling from both sides and two rinks is always a fair result away from home. Marion Haynes, Dave Haynes and Merv Armstrong 1615. Emma Walsh, Ann Taylor and Jim Taylor 10-26. Jan Bright Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 13-22. Gary Dunstone, Malc Sykes and David Whitworth 13-18. La Marina Bowls Club By Barry Latham Last Friday we had an early St Georges Day Disco and meal at Paolo’s and very enjoyable it was. Well organised by our new Social Secretary, Jean Tregoing. On Sunday we had a St Georges Day tournament with costumes which ended up with a late start because some people couldn’t get out of bed…. so rumour has it. Again very enjoyable and thanks goes to Bill Jones for sorting it out. The winners were Peter Parsons and Barbara Forshaw. Don’t know how much they won but Peter, Jan and Barbara went on holiday the next day. Second were Mike Stone, Reg Jackson and Derek Smith. Third came Maureen Kidd, Wendy Latham and Jack Chorlton. I won a prize with Frank Pollock and although it was the booby prize, I did explain to the members as President I couldn’t win everything so I came last. Monday saw the frolics go and the serious stuff start again. The Pilots played at home against Vistabella Greeners. Last week the Pilots had a great win and this week they had a great loss. Losing by only one shot overall. Three rinks won or lost by one shot. Our winning rinks were Sue Daniels, John Rae and Jean Tregoing 19-11. Dave Taylor, Steve Hindle and Mo Taylor 19-14. Terry and Jean Perchard plus Lorita Rae 20-19. The VCL league started again for us at home against a strong Quesada side proven by the score by 12-2 to them. Derek Toozer the newly crowned Champion of Champions Singles Winner proved he was a worthy winner by coming back from well down to win his singles game. Our only success came with Len Daniels who did better than the Blues, Steve Hindle and Andy Bartlett. The Pilots flew over to play Greenlands Gladiators and came away with a 9 – 5 win. Very good. Congratulations to Barry and Margaret Sadler plus Mike Surch also Len Daniels, Steve Hindle and Reg Jackson. Not forgetting Sue Daniels (not to be outdone), John Rae and Dave O’Sullivan and gaining our extra point with a draw Terry and Jean Perchard and Lorita Rae.

Toozer and Stevenson claim titles
T
he weather for this years Champion of Champions stayed fine but with strong winds on Thursday & Friday. Last years Mens singles champion Russell Marks (San Luis) again made the final to set up a match against Quesada’s Derek Toozer. Both played extremely well with shot changing with each bowl but in the end it was Derek Toozer who took the title. In the Ladies Singles the final came down to Helen Chambers (Mazarron) against Anne-Marie Stevenson (Emerald Isle), both had beaten some strong players in the rounds. Anne-Marie dropped a single shot on the first end but from then on took control, winning comfortably. The Ladies Pairs final pitted Lin Watkins & Carol Thorpe (Vistabella) against the San Miguel pairing of Gail Willshire & Lynn Greenland (San Miguel). The Vistabella ladies failed to show their form from previous rounds allowing Gail & Lynn to dominate the game. They had a comfortable win. In the Mens Pairs the Vistabella pair of Martin Foulcer (Last year’s National Singles champion) & Ian Kenyon took on Jim Gracie & Eddie Thompson (El Rancho). This was truly a nip and tuck final. At the 15th end there had only been 4 ends with a multiple shot count. The El Rancho pair led by just a single shot but the last 3 ends
proved to be their downfall, dropping 8 shots to lose by 7. The Mixed Pairs had Sabrina Marks & Tom Hill (San Luis) taking on Carol Broomfield & Jason Prokopowycz (Quesada). After 9 ends there had only been 11 shots scored & the San Luis pair led by 1 shot. They picked up a 3 on the next end but failed to score in the next 6 ends & despite winning the final end the title went to defending champions Carol & Jason. The Mixed Triples was a North/South battle between Paul Mayne, Dee Lane & Norman Vickers (Finca Guila) and Sue Kemp, Danny King & Brian Zelin (Monte Mar). The early part of the match went in the favour of the Finca Guila team who led 15-3 at the halfway stage. The Monte Mar team managed to score a 7 on end 15 to bring them to within 2 shots but they then lost the remaining ends and the Finca Guila team took the honours. Due to the number of players in multiple events the rinks semi finals were played on Sunday morning but with both winning teams unable to play in the afternoon the final was scheduled for Monday afternoon. This took place between the San Luis team of Steve Simmons, Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Russell Marks and the Monte Mar team of Geraldine Fisher, Janet Gatward, Gordon Fisher & Roy Mercer. The match was dominated by the Monte Mar team who led 13-0 after 9 ends. The San Luis side staged a comeback but it was not enough and the Monte Mar team took the title.

MONTE CHAMPIONS! CD Montesinos are Champions of the Segunda 2nd Regional Group 16 – in what has been a record breaking 2016-17 season for the Los Montesinos, Alicante based club. Under coach Carlos Perez, CD Montesinos clinched promotion to the 1st Regional, following a 6-2 away win at Deportivo Orihuela CF ‘A’ on Sunday – gaining promotion for the first time in the club’s history – that brought tears of emotion. Coach Carlos Perez and President Felipe Parades said, in a joint statement: “We thank both the CD Montesinos Committee and the Supporters Club for their support, and for all they do to help the club.” CD Montesinos’s season got off to a dreadful start when losing the opening two games of the campaign – 3-1 against CD Benijofar and a 4-1 home defeat against CD Murada – leading to the manager being axed and the appointment of Carlos Perez. “Manager Carlos Perez came to the club in October, having lost the two opening games. His technical staff and all the players turned the season around – they’ve been magnificent,” Supporters Club President Eddie Cagigao told me. Monte striker Carlos Ventura scored four goals in the 6-2 win at Deportivo Orihuela CF ‘A’, with goals by Dario and Vazquinho completing the rout. Benijofar defeated Grupo Caliche 2-0, to go into second place, on 47 points from 22 games. Third placed Callosa ‘B’ drew 1-1 against FB Redovan ‘B’ (43 points from 20 games) fourth placed CD Murada drew 1-1 against CFP Orihuela (41 points from 20 games). Atletic Orihuela defeated Sporting Orihuela 6-1. “Massive thanks goes to everyone associated with the club, from
‘Around and About the courses’ The period from 1st March to 30th May is considered to be HIGH SEASON when prices are at their highest and the courses at their busiest and this year is no different. It is fair to say that given the indifferent weather conditions in recent months and the huge amount of traffic on the courses in March and April a number of our local courses are showing the signs of wear and in need of a rest or warmer weather. A regular feature of these golf columns is to provide resident and tourist golfers with the INSIDE TRACK on what is happening on some of the local courses and below are just a few updates. La Peraleja - The course closed in December 2016 and basic maintenance is taking place to keep the greens alive and the course saleable and there are believed to be up to four offers on the table to purchase the course and facilities.
President Felipe Paredes Aldeguer and his hard working committee,” said Supporters Club President Eddie Cagigao. CD Montesinos have a plethora of supporters at the Vega Baja club in ‘The Full Monte’ Supporters Club: “Massive thanks also goes to the club´s International Supporters club, The Full Monte,” said Eddie. “They have supported the club - home and away - for a number of seasons and helped bring record numbers into the Campo Municipal de Futbol this season,” added Eddie. “Clinching promotion was very emotional - tears were shed. Ex-President of the club, Jaime attended the game,” said Eddie. Celebrations will continue at CD Montesinos ‘Player of the Year Awards’ evening on May 18 in Los Montesinos.
Toril sacked as Elche CF coach Following a dismal run of results, five defeats in their last six matches, Elche Club de Fútbol have sacked first-team coach Alberto Toril. Toril, who joined the club last summer, had been skating on thin ice for some weeks and a home defeat to relegation rivals Almería was the final straw for Elche president Diego García. Directly after the loss to Almería on Friday evening, García refused to be drawn on the subject of his manager's dismissal, saying only “any decision will not be rushed, it will be taken calmly and after due consideration.” Following a hastily convened board meeting on Saturday morning, the decision was made and subsequently made public at a press conference at the Martínez Valero shortly after. Following the dismissal, Sporting Director José Luis (Chuti) Molina – the man responsible for bringing Toril to the football club tendered his resignation which was immediately accepted. Between them,

In addition to moving quickly to get rid of Toril, the exit door hadn't even stopped swinging before Elche CF Ilicitano coach Vicente Parras was appointed first-team trainer until the end of the season. Parras, who has a decent record with the reserves but is untested at the higher level, now has six matches in which to stave off the unthinkable – and very much undesirable – for Elche, relegation to the Segunda B División.

Alicante - The course has suffered a disease in the greens since the Autumn of 2016 which has been OVER SEEDED OUT and the greens are much improved but still not at their normal high standards Altorreal - The course was purchased a few years ago by new owners who have conducted numerous improvements to the course and driving range and as a result the course is always a favourite of local golfers and well worth the journey but be aware that they started hollow tining at the end of April and the greens will take 15 days to recover depending on the weather and temperatures. New Sierra Golf - This 9 hole courses re-opened to the public a few months ago and is proving popular with some of the best greens in the area. El Valle - Unfortunately they recently had an electrical fire which destroyed all the buggies and electric trolleys and while they have managed to procure 20 new buggies they are operating with this depleted fleet of buggies and it will be this way in the near future so if playing there shortly you may find no buggies available for new bookings. Vistabella . The current plan is to seed the fairways and rough on the additional 7 holes in June 2017 (greens arleady seeded) with a forecast to open the 18 hole layout in October 2017 but be aware they hollow tined the greens last week on the existing 11 holes and these will take 15 days to recover depending on the weather and temperatures. Torry vow to fight on After a pretty dismal first half display, Torry stepped up a Crevillente Deportivo ... 0 gear after the break, thoroughly deserving their make or break victory against local rivals Crevillente. So with only 2 games remaining, they have given themselves a fighting chance of div 3 survival. Although still very much in the mire, a victory next Sun at Paterna will reduce the points deficit between the 2 clubs to only 1 point. Unfortunately Bunol remain 3 points clear of the last
relegation slot, following their mauling of now relegated Almoradi, and they need to slip up for Torry to overtake them. In other words, it´s no longer in Torry´s hands, but all they can do is keep winning whilst keeping fingers firmly crossed!! Vicente supplied the first attack of note on 18 mins, his teasing cross was met by the head of Borja, but alas he was sadly way off target. Why Pedreno continues to play Borja, when he is so blaringly of limited ability is beyond me, and if my Spanish was better I might be bold enough to ask Torry´s under pressure manager such a leading question! Whereas his fellow striker Beltran is a different kettle of fish. Had he not spent most of the season on the treatment table, I´m convinced Torry would not be in the situation they are. He has an eye for goal, works hard, and his 25 yard free kick on 24 mins came oh so close to opening the scoring. Five mins later his goal bound shot was deflected for a corner, as Torry were definitely in the ascendancy. Hector provided the visitors with their first serious attack, but his shot at goal fortunately flew inches past the far post. As the half drew to a close, Miguel rose high to head wide when he should really have opened the visitors account, then on the stroke of half time, a well worked move involving Lewis and Duran ended with Beltran heading agonisingly just over the bar. Man of the match Vicente struck a blistering 25 yard drive on 50 mins, which rippled the net, albeit the wrong side! A one on one between Crevillente striker Fran and Torry keeper Jose Carlos, ended with the former shooting straight at the latter. Next it was Martin who tried his luck from the edge of the box, but ex Torry keeper Oscar denied him a goal as he pulled off a typical top drawer save. On the hour mark Lewis was clearly fouled when through on goal by Gomis, but unbelievably ref Ventura chose to neither award a free kick or issue a red card Scorer Duran celebrating the all important goal which surely would have followed. Luis Carlos
CD Torrevieja ................ 1
proved his recall to the side was warranted, when on 65 mins his well timed assist set up Duran for a blistering strike from the edge of the box. It struck the bar before bouncing over the line, and credit must go to the eagle eyed linesman for awarding the goal, when a lesser individual might have lacked conviction. Luis Carlos, Beltran and sub Molina, all had glorious opportunities to increase their side´s lead, but at the end of the day the 3 points are all that mattered, and more of the same next week is imperative.
